So, sword lady is part of the scouting crew
they are bored, investigating atmospheric and solar disturbance. there's like 10 of them?
suddenly, boom, the Threat shows up. No powers revealed yet. He smashes a couple guys with their car, it gets set on fire. he throws it at Swordswoman, she slices it in half cause she is badass. She probably thinks this thing is no big deal, she can handle it. Easy.
The many other creatures on the Threat haven't acclimated yet. They're dormant. She climbs her way up it with relative ease, only to get gobbled up at the very end.
--
So, the scout guys run away. Their leader just got killed. They try to call for back up, but their communications array is down. As the Threat begins to get a foothold in the environment, they flee to their nearest outpost. They inform their outpost of what they describe as "an unprecedented threat", or something like that, and that's where the name comes from.
The outpost sends for more help, but sends some transport trucks with infantry in them to battle the Threat, while some messengers send word to the more powerful bases closer to the city. This will conveniently explain the waves of reinforcements that arrive later on.
