@Aisling Been to a carnival parade today. Stood for six hours straight. Shouted "Brunswick helau!" every three minutes for six hours... now, my back, my feet and my throat hurt. But hey - I've been given a plastic pistol, a necklace, a green santa hat for children, a sewing kit, and two big bowls of candy xD

Sound like you enjoyed your self. I went to a girlfriend's house today. We had fun talking about various books including Harry Potter, did our nails and had a taco salad.

@Aisling Nice :)

The carnival parade I went to was one of the biggest in Germany :) it's in Brunswick and it's called "Schoduvel", which is old German for "shoo (the) devil"

@Aisling 300,000 were expected, but my mother told me that on TV (there was a live broadcast), they said that less people than expected came... they didn't say a number, but taking a look at the numbers of visitors of the previous years, it probably were 250,000-280,000. 250,000 is the average, more or less. Since last year, the 'Schoduvel' had to be cancelled due to a terror warning, and since so-called 'sympathy bracelets' (bracelets that allowed you to travel to Brunswick, get a free donut and brown ale and take part in the aftershow party) were sold outside of Brunswick as well, more visitors than average were expected to come. So, I guess it was above 250,000, but below 300,000.

With that kind of a difference between the two countries would make your turn out a very good turn out. Each New Year's Eve, New York, New York had 1 million people in Times Square which is 5 blocks by 2 blocks or an acre of footage. There are buildings that people stick their heads out of and I think apartment buildings on top of stores.

@Aisling Brunswick is an old town without skyscrapers, so not that many people fit into it, first of all...

However, up to a million people come to the carnival parade in Cologne every year (it is the biggest one in Germany, while Brunswick is the fourth biggest... Cologne, Mainz, Dusseldorf, and then Brunswick).

And each one of our states except some of the Original 13 states, can be a country. Texas and California can be several states as large as they are.

@Aisling Founding a state isn't about the size. There are three things you need: Land that doesn't belong to any other state or that the other state has lost interest in, people, and a government. Such a state theoretically could be as large as Russia, or as small as your backyard.

Actually, Germany is smaller than Texas...

I didn't realize that Germany was that big! I haven't looked up the actual size of Texas but it is one of our biggest states.

About twice the size of Texas.
I think my grandson has an ear infection. He is so fussy and not feeling good. His ear is red. I'll call the doctor in the morning and get him asap.
