"Hmm."
Nataliya peered over the edge of the bridge. Beneath, an endless abyss yawned up at her, howling with the wind as snow fell down towards oblivion. For all she knew the chasm went all the way to the planet's core.
Her machine wings stowed, she leaned against the side wall and folded her arms. Here she was, in a wintery wasteland of wars past, waiting for...something. Her boss had sent her here to search for a sign of life, but so far all she'd found was death. Skeletons, corpses, weapons and blood, frozen and fresh. The bloody wars fought across this abyss stretched on, since time immemorial, and it was in the aftermath of one such fight that she had landed in this world.
With a weary sigh she stretched the kinks in her neck and looked around. The bridge itself was fairly simple; straight, made of stone, suspended between two cliff faces. On one side, blue stones glowed with a faint, magical light. On the other, red gemstones bathed the cobblestone in their iridescence. A few patches of grass and bushes grew, here and there. The cold wind made it next to impossible for anything hardier to grow. Snow covered most of the bridge surface as well.
"Perhaps he was wrong?"
From her left, Angelos spoke. She could tell he was growing antsy and restless. A fight had been promised, and yet there was a startling amount of nothing around. Nataliya shook her head and shrugged.
"I don't know. He's never been wrong before."
