The Age of Gods

It began in the times of yore when Urak impaled the Mountain King upon his own lofty throne. In doing so, Urak destroyed one of the wicked gods and freed man and woman from the tyrant's terrible rule. He became the leader of the Tuad Rithe, replacing King Harnut who died to see the Mountain King destroyed. This ushered in a new age: one of justice, one of peace, and one of adventure.

The Birth of the Clan

Each clan remembers their origins. Through song, through poem, and through the clan tapestry do we honor the deeds of our forefathers and forever keep their memory on our lips.

How did our clan come to be?

  • We fought alongside the Tuad Rithe against the Mountain King's terrible army and formed a new clan.
  • We were always allies of the Tuad Rithe.
  • We came with Urak when he first joined the Tuad Rithe.
  • We hail from across the sea and once worshiped the Sea Tribe.
  • We were among the peoples freed from the Mountain King's tyrannical rule.
  • We fought against the Tuad Rithe, but for our bravery we were given a second chance. @Mardox @Eklispe @Wernher

The Crowning of the Earthlord

Urak now sat upon the mountain throne and held dominion over all Urland. He was crowned King of the Tuad Rithe and wed to Aire. Their marriage was a truly joyous occasion.

What did our people do in this time of revelry?

  • We had much ale and made merry with Urak, whooping and singing and dancing through the night.
  • We conferred with Aire to discuss the future and began weaving our clan tapestry. @Lauder @Lexicon @Wernher
  • We buried the dead alongside Camvor and sang songs to honor their sacrifice.
  • We made way into the serenity of the forest and stood guard with Bodi while others reveled.

The Ancient Enemy

So it was that Urak became king of the gods. But the Tuad Rithe had enemies as well. Many battles were fought with those who sought to uproot the Urlandi people or to conquer them.

Which enemy did our clan fight against in ancient times?

  • The Fomorians, giants whose greed and hunger for human flesh know no bounds.
  • The Orc King, the leader of the pigmen and ransacker of lands.
  • The Moon Tribe, the monsters who come out during the Moon Season. @Wernher@Eklispe@Lauder@Mardox
  • The Storm God, a wrathful deity of lightning and floods.
  • The Sidhe Queen, leader of the fairy-folk and wielder of powerful magic.
  • The Firelord, a wild deity with pyromaniac tendencies.

The Great Crafts

But the Age of Gods saw more than war. It saw the growth of the Urlandi people, both in numbers and in culture. Under the guidance of the Tuad Rithe, the our people learned new trades and mastered old ones. We prospered under their benevolent watch.

What profession did our ancestors master?

The Age of Heroes

Though the Earth Tribe ruled justly and well, they were unable to defend themselves indefinitely against the evils of the world. The Dark Tribe, the Dorca Rithe, arose to tear down all that the Tuad Rithe had made. Soon the gods found themselves too busy defending themselves to keep a proper watch over all Urland.

The Thralls

As the Tuad Rithe could not protect all their people, they chose to bequeath the responsibility of protecting the weakest and most foreign of the clans onto others. These became the first thralls.

How did our ancestors take care of their charges?

  • We treated them as family, eventually freeing them all from their bondage.
  • We treated them fairly, letting them earn their freedom if they were worthy. @Lauder@Eklispe@Tracyarmav@Mardox
  • We treated them pragmatically, keeping as many as we needed to sow our fields and work our mines.
  • We treated them as animals, worth nothing but the work they could provide.

The Long War

The Dark Tribe's rise to power emboldened the enemies of the Urlandi, but it also made us desperate. Clans turned on each other as never before, and the wilderness began to creep ever closer.

How did we prepare for these dark times?

  • We raised the night watch, forever to keep the walls of our home lit.
  • We prayed for guidance and used faith to stay together.
  • We looked to our leaders for guidance.
  • We maintained good ties with our neighbors for safety against our foes. @Lexiconx2 @Tracyarmav
  • We struck first rather than waiting to be struck.

Organizing the People

The Age of Heroes then truly descended upon the Urlandi people. All were swept up in the strife. Soon, clans developed different takes on the old ways, some favoring peace while others favored war.

What sort of clan were we?

Patron Spirits

As the gods were not so receptive in these times, Urlandi began looking to animals and spirits to provide them with guidance. These little gods answered, and they offered their own magics to help the clans.

Which minor god did our clan turn to for guidance?

  • None. Our ancestors were good enough.
  • The Warding Wind, the wind spirit of the west.
  • The Black Wolf, the patron of night prowlers. @Tracyarmav @Mardox @Lauder
  • The Unicorn, a magical beast of the forest.
  • The Deep Warden, Urak's master of metals.
  • The Ashwalker, a spirit that hates the undead.

The Age of Men

The darkness was eventually beaten back. The Dorca Rithe were driven back into the Godsrealm by a valiant band of heroes now called the Seven Swords. The eternal darkness was lifted, and generations of people who'd never known light now could see the dawn.

Supplicating the Gods

Each clan asked for their gods to return and help them rebuild. The gods answered, appearing to their most faithful of followers. Though they did not step out from the Godsrealm, they were once again able to provide magic to help the clans.

Which god's return did our clan help bring about?

  • Urak, the Earthlord
  • Aire, the Hearthkeeper
  • Camvor, the Oathkeeper
  • Bodi, the Huntress @Eklispe x2, Tiebreaker = @Shorticus
  • Dyvella, the Healer
  • Mardoc, the Loremaster
  • Lucharoc, the Inventor
  • Cairis, the Strategist @Mardox @Wernher
  • Yvene, the Smiling Goddess
  • Lugibaid, the Tiller
  • Nol Bak, the Golden Hound
  • Gairena, the Cow Mother
  • Tadigam, the... um... That Guy His Royal Pain in the Ass? His Madnessty? Look, don't pick this guy. It's your fault if he gets picked. You know who you are. @Mardox* @Tracyarmav*

The Storm Giants

The Urlandi soon met a race of powerful beings that were even larger than the Fomorians: the Storm Giants. Hailing from the highest of mountain tops, these creatures were descendants of the Mountain King's children, yet these hundred-foot tall beings did not come to wage war. They spoke through their messengers, little people called the dwarves, who spoke highly of the Storm Giants.

What was our clan's attitude toward the Storm Giants?

  • Hostile - We fought them at every turn.
  • Negative - We would never trust the children of the Mountain King.
  • Neutral - We had no strong opinion on these creatures.
  • Positive - We learned from them and their ways. @Wernher @Mardox @Lexicon @Lauder @Eklispe

Exile

The reign of High King Harlaus over Urland has proven to be a polarizing one. Some have compared him to the bad kings in the eternal darkness while others have compared him to Urak himself. For better or worse, he has united the many clans under a single banner, subjugating his foes with his mighty army. For whatever reason, some dissidents have been banished, our clan among them.

Why has our clan been forced into exile?

  • Our clan led a rebellion against the High King. @Eklispe @Lauder
  • A few of us tried to assassinate the High King. @Tracyarmav x2, Tiebreaker = @Shorticus
  • Our clan has invoked forbidden powers in recent history.
  • Our warriors deserted the High King in his time of need.
  • We have done many smaller crimes and have finally committed one too many.
  • Some of us have spoken out loudly and fervently against the High King's rule. @Mardox@Lexicon

Claiming Land

This land we have found, this Hidden Valley, is a beautiful and idyllic place. We have suffered greatly in our journey, but perhaps this place makes it worth it. Some think this is merely a sojourn whereas others believe this could be our new home.

What part of the valley do we claim as our own? (CHOOSE TWO)

  • We have settled near the mountains and are situated on high.
  • We have settled along the river where it is most fertile. @Mardox @Tracyarmavx2 @Lauder
  • We have settled beside the forest where game is plentiful.
  • We have settled on the hills and have a defensible position. @Eklispe @Mardox @Tracyarmavx2 @Lauder
  • We have settled farther within the valley than other clans.
  • We have settled close to the other clans.

The Chief

Traditionally, the chief has most often been a worshiper of Aire, our patron goddess. Without a man or woman of Aire at the head of the Council, our clan magic is weakened. But these are desperate times. Not all the Council survived our flight from Urland, nor did they survive the trek over the mountains or the winter months in the Valley. The old Chief is dead.

Who shall govern our clan now? Who shall be our Chief? (You may not vote for yourself.)

The Tapestry

Each clan has a clan tapestry which tells the history of the clan, and each clan uses their own color for their tapestry. How or why this color was chosen is not always remembered, but this color is used in the clan's banners, is painted on their shields, and is a mark of pride. On these tapestries is often a simple symbol of historical relevance to the clan.

What color is our clan's tapestry woven from, and what symbol does it bear?

@Lexicon's submission, a green field with a red drop of blood centered upon it, is our clan tapestry!

We Are...

This which we have written is the history of our clan. We may be exiles, but we remain. We persevere. Our clan's destiny has not yet been met, so saith the God-Talkers.

What is the name of our clan? (Make it up!)

@Tracyarmav's submission, Clan Aonghus, has been chosen!

1221 - First Year of Our Exile

Sacred Time

At the start of each Sacred Time, that celebratory period at the beginning of the year, each Urlandi clan performs sacred rituals to call on the gods and their ancestors for help. Through these means the clans gain magic which can be used to bolster the clan. The God-Talkers then commune with the gods and tell us prophecy.

This year, Clan Aonghus has 8 magic to distribute. Each member of the Council may allocate 1 magic as they so desire, or they may keep their magic in reserve for the future. Our Chief, Serheim, may distribute 2 magic instead of 1.

The God-Talkers predict that we will have a normal harvest this year. They also had a vision of a woman's shadow pointing a sword out to the east. They took it as a sign that Cairis wants us to explore this year. Finally, the God-Talkers note our clan magic is weaker than it should be, but cannot say why.

Rising Rain

The melting of the last snow is a breath of fresh air for the clan. The last year has been one of hardship. Clan Aonghus has been banished, betrayed, and forced to undertake a perilous journey, forced to do unjust things to survive... But those times are over, finally. The storms are gone, the white sheet on the land has given way to a sea of green, and beautiful flowers are blooming across the hills and prairies.

It is Rain season, the planting season, and every effort must be made to ensure it goes smoothly. The Rain season is a poor time to go raiding, though the Gallocmen are always itching for a fight.

Besides the members of the council, we have 735 clansmen and 77 thralls.
  • 300 of our clansmen are children.
  • 17 of our clansmen are Gallocmen.
  • 12 of our clansmen are Craftsmen.
  • 15 of our clansmen are Hunters.

Our herds are rather average for our clan's size.
  • We have 705 healthy cattle.
  • We have 985 sheep.
  • We have a sparse 20 horses for use in raiding and war.
  • We have some hounds to help our shepherds protect the flocks.

We have some wealth to our name.
  • We have 140 goods for trade.
  • We have a single Treasure:
    • Cloak of the Black Wolf: This cloak imparts on its wearer great skill in stealth, and it is useful when taken on adventures that require such skill. The legends warn, however, that wearing the cloak too much might make one become closer to the Black Wolf than one might like...

The Gallocmen feel satisfied. The Kerns feel satisfied.

The Quarreling Couple

The Council meets in the newly build Clan Hall for the first time. It is a strange moment, one that produces mixed feelings of relief and regret. Most of the clan still yearns for the days when we lived in Urland, where we had a Clan Hall that had stood for two hundred years. Heroes had met there, dined there, and been ordained into the clan there. There is no such history yet in our Hall. Such history will have to be made anew one day at a time.

But the pursuit of glory will have to wait. There are domestic matters to be dealt with first.

Twice each season, the people of the clan are given an opportunity to come forward and present their domestic troubles and complaints to the clan. So it is now, just after the Sacred Time. Most of the matters presented to the Council are resolved quickly, but one in particular refuses to be settled easily.

Fintan Lariksen is a proud, perhaps haughty Gallocmen who has served the Clan nobly enough over the fifty years of his life. He has never been seen as a cool-headed man, but now he seems to be red with rage. His wife, Aifric, stands to his right, brandishing her husband's sword about angrily as she addresses the Council.

"I caught him laying with another woman again!" the tall, gray-haired woman roars, slapping the sword against her thigh. She's still quite pretty for her age. "And it's not the first time this year! First it was with a thrall girl, and now it's with some squat floozy from Clan Gearalt!"

"And should I bring up how I caught you sneaking about the back of our house with that young farmer? Or did you forget about that?" The old man growls through gritted teeth as he speaks. "Not to mention how you tried to skewer me on that sword, you crazed hag!"

The two of them shout a while longer before trying to throw themselves at the other in fits of rage. It takes four strong men to pull the two of them apart before they can cause any real harm to each other.

How should the Council deal with this matter?

_______________________________________________

Eliz sunk in her chair with a groan of desperation. She simply couldn't believe how much trivial and mundane things the council had to deal with. And now she couldn't believe how no one immediately went to the simple and obvious solution. "And here we go again with this inane horse shit." She swept her hand in the air. "Aifric tried to murder her husband and she even has the sword in her hand at this very moment to prove it. She isn't even denying it... Make her a thrall for her crime and be done with it!"

Then of course, there was the matter of adultery. She didn't care about that at all, as she herself had, as people often used to insult her, never been involved in a marital relationship despite being 23 and didn't intend on having one in any foreseeable future. No, there was only one thing that annoyed her in this little situation. "As for Fintan, he still cheated on his wife... with a Gearalti clanswoman. My coins are on her being a stinkin' spy, and him being a bloody idiot for not being able to control his genitals just to breed with a stranger." She crossed her arms. "I say give the bastard for me to command in an expedition eastward as a punishment, it'll keep him away from his lovers and hopefully end that relationship with the stranger in the process."

Arguably it would be the duty of any clansman to join an expedition if they had to, Gallocmen would in fact be the most suited for the work, but Eliz knew them. In an exploration mission there were as much if not more dangers than any expedition outside the clan's territory but with the reward only being intangible knowledge rather than any material goods, which was why people had a hard time being motivated for the enterprise, and why Eliz wanted to conscript whatever competent person she could get her hands on for this. She knew she was ugly as sin, so whatever womanizing habit Fintan had wouldn't matter in this expedition.

In her mind her plan was the best, but she doubted people would easily be swayed by her words. Her time sitting on the council had pretty much being her constantly coming head to head with other council members on every issue that mattered, which was why she was thinking up new and creative ways to tell Dunlad that she'd make her shove all the extra vegetables they'd have where the shine never shines if he had his ways and got everyone that could tilt the soil to do so to plant crops. She wasn't an idiot, she knew it was important, but it annoyed her to no end that everyone thought it was all that mattered, especially considering how fertile the lands they had settled in were... and how fertile the lands settled by other nearby tribes were.

Hopefully it wouldn't come to that and everyone would just accept that since the gods said it was time to explore, then it was time to shut up and let her do her thing. Who, after all, could possibly be better suited for it? And, who could possibly prevent her from doing so if they refused...

Dunlad eyed the bickering couple, a wry glint in his eye.

A gaggle of squawking geese, that lot. He suppressed his urge to guffaw, knowing his fellow councilors would perhaps take it unkindly. Not that they wouldn't frown at him one way or another, no matter what came out of his mouth. He felt more than a little out of his element here, and the effect was only amplified by the newfangled clan hall.

Although it shone with a coat of fresh paint, it lacked something, still, fundamentally; a fire blazed furiously in the hearth, warming the place up to the rafters to waylay the Rain season bite, but the heat did not reach their hearts, still hoary from the snows of Harlaus' betrayal and the bitter waters of their hard migration. Although flowers erupted into blossom atop the Valley's knolls, they seemed preoccupied yet with the Moon season's pangs. Clan Aonghus now sprouted callow leaves, but even as the snows receded, the cold was a silent thing, and returned like a cattle thief in the night to snap the necks of sleeping saplings.

Regarding the tempest being brought down on their heads, Aifric grasping for the blade which had been dashed to the boards in the melee, Dunlad slowly rose, his right leg trembling. This quarrel, it seemed to him, was merely a test; a test to set the tone of what would come to pass. Should the ancestral rites be broken in the interest of a new beginning?

He raised his hand for silence, eyeing his fellows warily. Finally, he cleared his throat, and began, in a coarse voice, "It seems to me, a simple man, that the gods have not blessed your love. And they won't get to it any time soon."

"If, Aifric, Fintan has lain with another woman, let it be past; and Fintan, if Aifric has lain with other man, let this likewise be past," he continued, leaning weightily on his walking stick, "I say let it be done. Divorce them, and let not they come within fifty paces of one another. The gods have cast their judgement already; we have lost much, and we need not any more bad blood. There are seeds to sow, horses to foal, children to be tutored. I say let it be done."

Serhiem merely listened to the couple bicker to one another before they had to be broken up by several men, to his own dismay. This shouldn't be a matter for them as everyone within the clan should just get along with one another, especially since everyone needs to work on the crops. He listened to his council members before clearing his throat to speak his opinion as chief.

"I feel that the best solution to resolve this, without the need of anyone becoming a thrall," he nods his head to where he heard Eliz speak, "I feel that both of you should be found for adultery. Both of you shall be punished. Fintan, you shall be under command of Eliz for her little exploration."

The blind man sighed once more and began once more on the punishment for Aifric, the wife. "I feel that you shall work alongside the Thralls for the season, and you shall be treated as one. I am sorry that the two of you had to resort to this, however, after your punishments then maybe you will see that there is no need for such manners." He let out another sigh, before leaning back in his seat.

"I shall let my fellow ring members say what they wish," Serhiem said before finally shutting his mouth. The chief did not like to see, rather hear, his fellow clan members come under strife with one another. It was an unfortunate truth that this would happen to people, hopefully the punishment that would be given will make sure this matter will never happen again. "You do not need to divorce if you feel the both of you will get through this together. Remember that it takes many instruments for music to be heard properly, if one does not work then the true song will never be heard. I urge the council to see my view on this matter, however, I will hear what their suggestions are before anything is final."

This was a new situation for SeĆ²ras he was new to being on the council but he still earned his place. Today they were talking about a situation concerning a couple with a domestic issues to put it lightly. Evidently this involved cheating and the wife using a sword which she brought with her to try and kill his husband out of nothing but rage. Its obvious though that the husband doesn't deny cheating on his wife but he did counter by saying that she did the same with a young farmer. SeĆ²ras was divided on what the council should enforce and his fellow council members had some good ideas but SeĆ²ras wasn't very keen on making the woman a thrall even for a small amount of time but the idea for the man to go with their fellow council member out on a what could only be called a expedition of little means to the entire whole.

SeĆ²ras heard the first few of his fellow council members say their opinions and unfortunately SeĆ²ras got into another one of his fits as he started coughing. He quickly grabbed his tissue and covered his mouth and while it was muffled by the tissue his coughing was deafening and would no doubt have others see what was making the noise. After a few moments of coughing he sighed seeing their was a little blood on the tissue. "I am sorry for that my friends. I did not mean to disrupt the silence by my own coughing. In terms of punishments I would have to agree with Serhiem on his idea. I would much rather that while they do need to punished for not being able to resolve this themselves I don't see the need for the woman to be a permanent thrall in any regard, however threatening her by showing her where she will end up is a much better lesson to both her and to others that think acting on only their emotions is an acceptable way to get what they want." SeĆ²ras decided to end it with that. He made his opinion known on their punishment.

Now once they finished dealing with the couple SeĆ²ras needed to get approval from his fellow ring members to build a wall around their territory or at least to build some fortifications that will increase their defense against any kind of raid or pillaging attack. One of SeĆ²ras' goals in terms of changing the clan was to make a permanent home for them however to do that they would need to first establish a defense against others that would see fit to take from them. Once that is done then SeĆ²ras would deal with housing a food if their was any trouble in that area to begin with.

Ardghal frowned at the feuding couple. They had both committed adultery and one had tried to kill the other. Clearly, they needed both punishment and to be split up as they were a danger to each other and would cause unnecessary drama for the clan which needed unity. Ardghal spoke in his deep voice that was somehow both booming and quiet.

"I am of the opinion that the two are a danger to one another and to our unity. I say we divorce them if they are unable to live together. Fintan has committed adultery not once but twice. For this, I would assign him to Eliz's gentle care for reeducation and the opportunity to think on what he has done. Aifric, while having understandable motives has committed adultery as well though likely for spite's sake rather than lust. Furthermore, she attempted to slay her husband. She is to work aside the thralls until Fintan returns whether in one piece or not. After they have served their punishments, they will be given a choice as to whether they wish to reconcile or to divorce.

This, fellow members of the Council, is the judgement I would pass. Make of it what you will. Let their squabbles cause no more strife in our new home. I will go to take inventory of our resources for this season."

What a lovely day to mire with such petty squabbles. Alas, it must be done or the whole clan would tear itself to pieces. Today's squabbles featured an ill-tempered couple of weak wills. Domagoj sat and listened quietly as the various councilmen voiced their opinions about the couple, and how they ought to be punished. He personally wouldn't mind seeing them both offed for being blight on the clan by being unable to sort this issue out between themselves, in his mind they were a sore, or a boil, that should be lanced, cleaned, and then sealed with a searing flame, lest infection set in and cause even more damage to the rest of the body. But, as per usual, the rest of the council seemed to think the louts could still be of some use to the clan and set their plans for the exploitation of the unhappy couple forth.

Of all the noise makers the chief seemed to have the most efficient method of dealing with the couple, it even allowed the pair to be re-integrated into the clan should they prove capable of learning their respective lessons. Domagoj doubted the two could, why else would they burden the council with such a trivial matter? Still, the council expected him to say something, so Domagoj said his piece in as few words as possible.

"I support Chief Serhiem in this matter."

As the clan enters the Rain season, I spend much of my time mixing gathered reagents into a nutritious fertilizer for our crops. I use three bags of dung from the herds, two bags of moldy fodder from years past, four bags of compost, from my personally tended heap, and few drops of an elixir of growth to make each barrel of fertilizer. Unfortunately, I have neither time nor resources to make enough for the entire village yet, and until I'm confident I have the right mixture I don't want to entrust it's making to less dedicated souls. Of course this means I get to charge for the goods produced, though I'm careful to ask for only a little silver, and a portion of the crop's creme for my troubles.

I reserve my point this week.

Titania refrained from a heavy sigh. This quarrel had gone on far too long for her tastes, but at least the other council members had offered reasonable solutions for the most part. She had no particular concern for how the matter was dealt with, as long as it was dealt with. SeĆ²ras's cough reminded her of her own constantly reoccurring fevers among the other small troubles that ailed her, but while debilitating when they came in full force, for the most part they were minor annoyances. "I concur with council member Ardghal. Let them serve their own punishments and decide upon the end of them whether they shall be split apart." With her rumbling statement said Titania leaned back in her chair. It was the best decision so far in her opinion as it punished both of them, let them be productive, and most likely solved the problem. Already though her mind was drifting away to the start of her next training session. Though she wasn't the first choice for the front-lines anymore her knowledge and skills lent themselves naturally to teaching. Of course whenever someone got upity they quickly learned that missing an arm didn't mean that she was any less fierce.

Maire Virtanen puts 1 point of magic into Diplomacy.

Decisions

As Maire listened to the other Council members speak, her gaze meandered around the newly constructed clan hall and a frown spread across her face. She hated this place. Clan Aonghus' old hall, with its familiar sights and smells, had possessed something this well-built collection of wooden boards and straw never would. Character. Where was the threadbare tapestry that depicted Aire, Queen of the Gods, talking to the clan's founders after her marriage to Urak? Why weren't the last of the scentwood logs from Urland being burned in the great hearth to properly bless this awful building? What would become of the beautifully carved granite statue of Bodi, which had been left behind in the old hall due to its size and weight?

Sighing and brushing a wayward strand of black hair away from her face, Maire folded her hands atop her belly. These thoughts weren't productive, and she needed to at least look like she was paying attention to whatever these fools were babbling about. A domestic dispute? Truly? It had only been a few short seasons since the clan's exile, and the Council was already being asked to settle disagreements between husbands and wives? Unacceptable.

Still, a little diplomacy never hurt anyone.

Once Titania finished offering her suggestions to the group, Maire leaned back in her polished thornwood chair and smiled at Fintan and Aifric. While she was usually more than happy to follow Chief Serhiem's lead, the one-armed warrior woman sitting beside her had given Maire a better idea. Clearing her throat, she said, "Was it not Aran the Wise, noblest of all urlandi sages, that said, 'Attention paid to an elder is attention that will be paid back tenfold. For wisdom flows like a river from their mouths?' Perhaps I'm misremembering the sage's words..." She wasn't, and Maire knew it. Shrugging and turning her pale blue eyes towards Fintan Lariksen, she said, "Now, brave warrior, I believe I have treated you for rockjoint at least five times since we settled in this valley? Is that correct?"

The elderly gallocmen nodded slowly and Maire's grin widened. "This man, this battle-hardened champion, has served Clan Aonghus well for many years. He shouldn't be asked to patrol the borders of our territory alongside his brothers-in-arms anymore. Nor should he be expected to go on some...hastily thrown together expedition to the east. Instead, as penance for his misdeeds and to keep him occupied, let Fintan train our younger warriors in the art of war."

The raven-haired alchemist shot a caustic glare at Eliz and said, "He is no bastard and, while he has certainly made mistakes, one should not kill a cow because it produces a few buckets of sour milk. One should only kill the cow if there is no other option available. Or if you need the meat." Fintan's eyes widened at the thought of not being allowed to carouse with his fellow warriors and he opened his mouth, but Maire held up one pale hand to silence him as she turned her attention to his wife.

"Now, as Aran the Wise also said, 'To bind that which was born free is a crime against gods and men.' Still, if having Aifric work alongside the thralls puts an end to this discord then I am for it. However, I believe the Council should claim half the goods she produces during this time. We can distribute them to those who suffered most during the Moon Season," Maire said and she glanced over at Serhiem to gauge his reaction. "I only suggest this course, chief, because we need to convince other families not to bring issues like this before the Council. A fine will ensure similar squabbles are dealt with privately. We should use this season to focus on sending emissaries to neighboring clans and protecting our viable trade routes. Problems like this are beneath us. Of course, you must decide what is best for Clan Aonghus, mighty chief, and may the gods grant you clarity in this matter."

Maire idly pulled at a loose thread dangling from her blue-dyed satin robes and tried not to smirk at the flustered couple. No matter what Serhiem decided to do, she hoped they'd learned a valuable lesson this day. The Council had no time to waste on marital woes.

Dunlad eyed the alchemist up and down, reevaluating her. He had never been one to lend much credence to the words of the gods, although he gave his respects where they were due. He had sat many a time, on the cool earth as the orange-cast sky cooled to twilight, contemplating the winking stars and wondering (for he knew, as did all, that they did exist), if they really bothered themselves with the supplications of the kerns in the fields just as much as the brawny gallocmen who won glories in their names.

Yet even Dunlad was forced to admit that Maire's words held water. He butted in to speak his mind again, "I'm in agreement with Maire, and my fellow councilors. This journey's been hard on us all, not in the least the kerns and the thralls, many o' whom died in the passage, as I trust you saw. If this Aifric can ease their burden, even if just a bit, I can tell you it'd not go unnoticed."

"As for this Fintan," he continued, gesturing brusquely with his walking stick, "If what the alchemist says is true, sending him ranging is like as giving him to Camvor before his time. Rockjoint 'taint an easy nut to crack. He might wish to die bloodied on the field of battle with his brothers, in the glory of Urak and all that, but he very well can't if he can scarce walk on two legs. But he still has the sword-learning in his head, and in his arms. It'd be a shame to let that field go fallow."

"My sons wish to earn their fame with sword in hand as well, gallocman," he said, addressing the kneeling warrior directly, "Perhaps it's time you did something creative, for a change."

Glancing about at the assembly, he crossed his thick forearms and leaned back into his thornwood chair.

"Well, I've said my keep."

Dunlad sacrifices 20 cattle to his patron god, Luigibad, hoping that he will favor Clan Aonghus' first harvest in their new home.

Serhiem though long and hard, his hand rubbing his beard to signify his that he was in deep thought. Everyone had their suggestions, some better than others for the couple. It was minutes before he came to a consensus on what the punishment should be for the two. "I have made my mind on the punishment. Fintan, you shall train boys to become men, Gallocemen at that. You will do this until they are competent enough to go head-to-head with the more experienced Gallocemen." His head then turned towards Aifric.

"As for you, you shall work alongside the Thralls. Learn what their plight as they have harder work than you do, be happy that your marriage has survived this long," the chief stated before clearing out his throat. "Now, whether you two stay wed or not is up to you, however, should you come back with the same problem then you will be shamed. Go and begin your punishments," he waved his hand to signal for them to leave." the blind man sunk into his seat for a moment before he straightened up one more, wanting to not seem to be annoyed that this had to happen. Though, it was innevitable that something like this would have come to them in the future.

It was at that moment that Serhiem knew that this would be a very long time in the valley. He let lose a sigh of despair, being chief was not going to be an easy thing for him to do. Though, at least he had the ring to help him along the way and that he was grateful for. He looked around at everyone who was apart of the ring. "Well, as you were everybody. We have a lot of things to do," he said before getting up and departing from the clan hall.

Soon Serhiem departed with a caravan and some guards, four Gallocemen and six kernsalong with his sister of course., to head north to the neighboring Gearalti clan. He sought trade with them, wishing to make a better profit and markets and maybe making some peaceful relations happen. He would take some gifts along for them, five goods worth, just to show what the Aonghus crafters could make for them. He knew that they may not like their work all too much, but it was the thought that counted.

Eliz had been surprised for a moment, to see the tides somewhat turn in her favor and people somewhat agreeing with her. At least partially. Then of course, it stopped, a sober reminder of Eliz's own condition. The raider turned her own hideous gaze toward Maire, a hint of her teeth visible as her thin lip pressed inward, a hissing audible to those close to her. It didn't matter, Eliz knew what she needed and if not Fintan, it would be some other gallocman. That's the point you useless, stupid whore, if not him someone else. She thought. Of course Maire would argue that she should do it alone, but Eliz wouldn't do her the favor of dying quietly out there.

___________________________

Rain season was well named. Still, Eliz didn't bother taking off her damp cloak or her boots as she stepped all over Jego's brewery's floor. Jago himself, a corpulent man with brown, salt and pepper hairs, couldn't care anymore after all these years, first in the old country and now here. Not that Eliz was exceptional, the Gallocmen in general tended to forget about manners while out in the field. "Oi, fry-face! Here to wish old man Fintan best of luck in his new job?"

There were laugh all around. No one was sure if Fintan was lucky to live long enough to retire or not. Gallocmen rarely did. Eliz would have laughed too if the fry-face comment didn't irk her. People thought she had gotten used to it, every Gallocman had such a surname, but Eliz didn't. She never would.

"Of course not. I'm here to find someone who isn't afraid of a little rain to accompany me east." At that, everyone kept silent, knowing Eliz would ultimately draft people anyways so it was best to duck down and not attract attention. Eliz sat at the edge of the table. "I'll come, if you put up the coin for the supplies." One of the bigger warrior said. Brabant the giant, towering over most of those here. Not what Eliz preferred in terms of manpower, but the meat head would probably be useful during the climb.

Eliz showed a wicked smirk. "Good. You're my second in command, unless Corto or Farel join." Some laugh, though Brabant didn't mind. Still meant he was more fit for command than 15 other idiots here. Corto and Farel however eyed Eliz with more calculating gaze. The fact that they weren't as stupid as the rest meant they were also more likely to want to hear more before joining.

"Now that I know who's got guts, I should tell you why you should want to come with me." The peeps leaned in, a tad more interested. Of course Eliz wouldn't do something out of the goodness of her heart. "We'll slap Nightfell's balls a little. No harm in having payment if the clan doesn't pay for it." The warriors looked at each other, some with doubt others with excitement. "I know, I know, its a long trek and we'll be in their territories, we won't be back for dinner for this one. But 'tis the season. You heard Dunlad. 'Gotta farm them crops' And all that thrall crap, right? We'll he's got a point, that's what people should do at this time of the year and that's why no one's raiding. Normally. They'll be distracted and we'll be bold."

Jego placed a tankard in front of Eliz, cider weak in alcohol as she couldn't stomach anything else. "We'll hit them twice. First will be on our way in, because Nightfell should really finance our little expedition since its a god given mission, but it will also count as a bit of reconnaissance. We'll snoop around, grab some pigs or sheep and run for it, we'll all be mounted so it won't be any trouble. They expect creatures from the woods or the east, not where the other clans are so we shouldn't encounter anyone. Once we come back however is when we'll fill our pockets. It'll be a few seasons afterward, we want to be back for winter after all... Who's in?"

A few hands got up, all that Eliz needed, but not what she wanted to see. "Fine, I guess the rest can have fun listening to Dunlad rant about crops and give a hand to the thralls." Suddenly almost all hands were in the air, giving Eliz ample choice. "Good. Corto, Brabant, Hilgi, you guys are with me. I'll take two hunters as well so we can be self sufficient while we're on the move."

Eliz took her drink, aiming to quench her thirst before making the preparations. Farel however, who had not wished to join, spoke up. "What about clan Stormcaller?" Of course. They had no feud with Nightfell, they might not like to be part of a group raiding them. "What about them? If they don't want to participate in the raids then they simply don't. Plus, its not like they'll be joining us." People were surprised, didn't she tell the council she'd...? "Don't give me that face, we're going to Stormcaller first but as some of you might know, I don't negotiate. I'll offer them to join us, but I won't offer anything in exchange and I'll specify we won't owe any favor. In fact, they should owe us, its a courtesy and nothing more."

"No, what I want to see is their reaction. These giant lovers know more about Stormpeak than we do, more about the Giants. If anyone knows if there's anything involving giant there, it will be them. And I hope they'll tell me its sacred ground because we'll go anyways and I'll find what's hiding there. Gods don't send us look around to admire the sights men, they are pointing at something. This. Is a quest."

The men looked at Eliz with excitation now. It made sense, why else would the gods send them eastward? Eliz drank again, this time in silence as every man was perched on her lips. Finally, she pushed away her empty tankard. "Not a word of this to anyone, doubly so while we're at the Stormcaller village, I do all the talking. I'll find my two hunters and our horses. Stallions if I can help it to keep the mares pregnant. You will each have one and I'll have two, we don't want to lose everything at the mountain since once we're there, we'll split in two, one group will stay down with the horses while the others will follow me and climb. You go around town to do your things and I'll pay for the tab, deducted on your shares of raiding. And if any of you go to Maire for potions and try to give me the tab, it counts for double."

The Quarreling Couple

Fintan and Aifric both look very relieved as they learn they will not, in fact, be sent on far-off adventures or made thralls. Aifric seems particularly grateful to Maire and Dunlad, outright saying she was worried for her freedom until they'd spoken up. She leaves, looking tired and still a little upset, but nevertheless is much more content than she was earlier.

Fintan is rather quiet, and he waits until his wife has left the room before he speaks. Then, he recites a poem on the spot about the mercy and honor of the Council of Aonghus, a surprisingly fine one at that. When he is done, he presses his hand over his chest and says ardently:

"I will do all in my power to show I deserve the kindness you've shown me, my kin. I will turn those boys and girls into legends. I swear it."

With that, Fintan leaves the clan hall, his passionate words still ringing in everyone's ears.

Word reaches the Council later that Fintan has totally dedicated himself to his new labor, taking great care of his pupils. The kerns compare him to a mother bear, and everyone seems pleased by this turn of events. The clan has more faith in the Council and in young Serheim's leadership, though the Tuad Rithe alone know how long this will last.
