The steam billowed about the room, causing Gaulirax to stand as close to the large sheet of glass as he could just to see himself in the reflection. His eyes trailed over his body, it was already swollen with muscle from his decades of doing menial and hard labor for his Mistress. Gaulirax, slowly let out a snort that bloomed with small puffs of smoke just before reaching over for a rectangular section of cloth that unfolded into about four feet of fabric. With experienced hands he began to slide the cloth around his waist, weaving it in and out between his thighs over his groin, and past his buttocks. With a heavy sigh he turned and walked from the bathing chamber, heading towards his ordered destination.
Pushing open a door, Gaulirax found himself in a rather cavernous room. A multitude of weapons, weights, training dummies, and a single dwarf who was standing right smack in the middle of the room.
“Well Lad, welcome to the training room. I’m going to be your Master at Arms, training ye to survive as long as ye can in the arena.” The dwarf moved about the room. “Ye can be callin me Rathrid.” The squad little man reached a weapons rack and easily picked up a large wooden mallet. “Seein as you be a slave and all, we can’t be givin ye real weapons to practice wit. So ye’ll be practicin with these here wooden ones. So ye bein a big lad and all I figured why not be given ye this here mallet.”
The dwarf was faster than he looked, and the mallet suddenly being thrown Gaulirax’s way was barely caught before it would have hit him in the head. Clawed hands stroked over the finely polished wood. The scent of the banyan tree filling his nostrils he was lost for a moment as he imagined himself in the woods outside of the city, that was until he heard a sharp yell. As Gaulirax came back to reality he realized that the dwarf warrior was rushing at him swinging a wooden sword, and it was only by some fast acting he put the shaft of the hammer in front of him feeling the harsh vibrations of the wood cracking on wood through his hands, his arms, and up to his shoulders. It caused Gaulirax to stumble backwards constantly being kept on the defensive, but even then he couldn’t block all the attacks every so often he felt the wooden sword crack across some part of his body, it send sharp shocking pain up his limbs making him hiss in pain. Then a well placed sword strike walloped Gaulirax in the side of the head making his vision filling with black spots as he fell to his rear.
“Lad ye gon have to be doin better than that.” The dwarf moved to stand beside Gaulirax and started to tap him on the shoulder with the wooden sword. “Now get up. Ye gon be workin by yeself for a bit. Gon be workin on that dummy ore there. He got bout the same skills ye do.”
Gaulirax frowned at the Dwarf and the way he spoke, it made him feels so insignificant and weak. He knew he wasn’t though, the first time he had been in the arena was two days ago, and without any training he had killed two men with a mighty warhammer. He conceded as he got to his feet, and began walking towards the dummy rather slowly, but only at first as he felt the flat of a wooden sword crack across his rear and make him pick up his pace. Standing in front of the dummy he stared at the dummy for a moment and brought the mallet up and around bringing it down into the side of the practice target.
“No no! Lad ye be doin it all wrong. Ye gotta use that hammer right. Ye gotta let the hammer do most of the work. So ye swing it back, up, and around so when it be fallin it gets a massive amount of momentum and hits ye enemy with so much more force. Now ye try it. Aim for legs, ribs, and Head.”
With a open mind Gaulirax listened close to the dwarf’s words and began to swing at the dummy. The mallet swung striking the legs, then he shifted letting the momentum carry the mallet further before strikin hte dummy in the chest, then continued to swing it in a arc against the dummy’s head.
“Good lad… Now ye keep at that. I’ll be over here drinkin.” The dwarf waddled off to a bench and sat down beginning to drink from a skin of wine.
The practice on the dummy lasted for hours, Gaulirax swinging the hammer over and over again, letting it crack against the dummy again and again. His hands had gone numb from all the vibrations, and his muscles burned with the constant exertion he had been putting into it. He couldn’t stop though as every time he slowed he felt the crack of a wooden sword against his back.
“Ye’ll never get better just standin there lad! Now strike that dummy.” The dwarf yelled at Gaulirax.
It couldn’t be kept up anymore as the mallet fell from Gaulirax’s shaking hands with a thud on the wooden floor. He went to his knees gasping and choking a bit from the way his lungs burned from all the physical exhaustion he had put himself through.
“Lad I did nay say ye could rest!” A blow to the back cracked across Gaulirax’s back, but still he didn’t get up. “I said up lad!” Another blow, then another, the dwarf continued to strike Gaulirax with the wooden sword till the world went black and Gaulirax lost conciousness.
* * *
Cold water brought Gaulirax awake quickly as it was poured over his face. Blinking he saw the dwarf standing over him holding a bucket, and grinning like a madman. “Well hella there princess, bout time ye woke up. We still be havin trainin to do.”
Gaulirax stood up his body aching, and sore still able to fill the places all over his back and head where the wooden sword had struck him. Letting out several slow breaths he picked up the bucket and drank down what little water was left in it and turned to face the dwarf.
“Good lad.. Good ye be needin that. Ye probably need to rest too, it just bout sundown. Ye don’t get to sleep yet though, no not yet. See I got one final task for ye today.” The dwarf moved away and picked up a rather large wooden beam dragged it over to Gaulirax and put it in his hands. “You take that beam lad and ye hold it above ye head. I be countin, two hours ye be needin to hold it, and then ye can have some food and sleep.”
Gaulirax looked at him with utter and complete contempt, the beam was heavy obviously at least fifty mounts of solid wood, and he was supposed to hold it above his head for two hours. “Lad here be the other part of the deal. Ye drop it, ye be startin over. Let’s begin.”
Gaulirax frowned a bit and lifted the beam rather easily and held it above his head. He stood there, and found that perhaps it was easier than he thought. About twenty minutes into holding it though he found he was wrong as his arms began to shake, his muscles threatening to give way, and eventually they did as he dropped the beam and frowned inwardly at his lack of accomplishing the task.
“We start the time over lad!” The Dwarf picked up and hour glass and moved the sand from end to the other. “Let’s start again.”
Gaulirax wasted no time and had the beam up once more above his head and held it there, he locked his arms up and this time managed to make it thirty minutes without dropping the beam again. As the wooden chunk hit the floor Gaulirax cursed loudly and started to rub his arms that now felt like they were on fire. He vigorously continued to rub his arms before feeling a quick slap of a piece of wood along his thighs.
“That’s enough. PIck it back up!” Rithrod said with a grimace and raised the sword once more.
As fast as he could Gaulirax picked up the beam and lifted it back up above his head his eyes wide as he stared at the wall, not wanting to look back at the dwarf for fear he might strike him again.
Once more he locked his arms up so that they wouldn’t collapse, thirty minutes passed and still he stared his eyes beginning to water up a bit as tears rolled down his cheeks. A hour passed and he dropped to his knees and started to growl in pain his arms shaking and beginning to collapse, but he pushed them back up and locked them once more. It seemed like time had stopped for Gaulirax and his nostrils flared for a moment as he turned his head slightly and saw the hourglass, and blinked as he watched a miniscule amount of sand grains left. That was all it took though as his arms buckled, and he felt a rush of blood soar through his body and his vision went black once more.
* * *
Something smell great, something smell wonderful. Sitting up with his eyes going wide he found himself staring at a bowl of fresh bread, and a skin of cool water.
“I think ye earned that lad. Eat up.. Drink up. Then ye go get that in tub over there, ye got no idea what it cost me to get a dragon to make that much ice fer me.” Rathrid stood up from his bench and left the room.
Gaulirax devoured the food hurriedly, and downed the water as quick as he could. He sat there for a moment letting the feeling of being full warm him. Then his eyes wandered to the tub and he moved towards it, he stared at the ice filled water for a long time before sliding into it and giving a gasp of shock as the freezing water sent shivers across his entire body. At the same time though he could feel the swelling all over his body already subsiding. His eyes closed as he relaxed, and he found himself drifting off once more, but the rest wouldn’t last.
Cold, it was so cold. Shivering Gaulirax stood up in the tub the water and ice falling off his form, he looked around quickly for his cloth wrap but couldn’t find it. All he found was Rathrid sitting on the bench and staring at him. “Well Lad it’s about time ye woke up. Maybe it be time we got you warmed up huh?” in the middle of the room was a stand with a chunk of tree sitting atop it. “Now this here be your enemy. Ye nay get any weapons. Ye be usin them teeth, claws, and that tail.”
Gaulirax raised a brow. “Why take my wrap though?” The reason eluded him as it would help his training.
“I thought it be funny.” Rithrod said with a grin and a chuckle. “Now get to work.”
Gaulirax sneered and moved towards the piece of tree and began to slash at it with his claws tearing away bar and leaving a little bit of sap dripping down it.
“No lad! Faster! Harder! Ye cut deep! Tear their flesh out make their organs drop to the floor. Be a wild beast! Ye be part dragon!” He slapped the wooden sword against the floor with a loud crack.
Gaulirax growled and attacked the post with full force and began to tear through the wood with his claws, his feet, and his teeth. HIs body wrapped up against the post as deep rivets were torn through the wood and his teeth embedded themselves deep into the soft organic material. By the time he was done tearing at the post his gums were bleeding and his claws were chipped in some places, but what was once a tree stump was now nothing more than a sap bleeding chunk of wood with chips of it all over the ground.
“Good lad, very good. I think we are done here. Ye come back here in two days, and we continue with your training.” The dwarf stood up and started towards the door. “I’m gonna go fuck me some whores.”
Gaulirax watched the dwarf leave before standing up and moving out the door himself and heading back to his chambers. There he found a large chunk of stone with a rope looped through the middle of it. Narrowing his eyes it took him a minute, but he realized that the loop at the top of it was the perfect fit for his hands. Sitting down Gaulirax felt the hard stone slab that he laid his blankets upon cool against the scales on the back of his legs and rear.
For a long time he stared at the stone before putting his hands in the loop and began to curl it up to his chest then stood up and repeated the process. Overall he repeated the sessions of 10 curls standing and sitting ten times each. By the time he was done his arms felt like jelly, and without even putting his blankets down he fell asleep half laying off the stone slab.
This training would continue for the next few months, each session getting progressively harder as Rithrod pushed Gaulirax harder and harder, but he began to respect the lad and felt like he was truly someone that could become something great in the arena one day. He would always tell him. “Keep going lad, you’re not done yet.” These words would be something forever imprinted in Gaulirax’s mind.
