Clawed hands buckled leather straps that held plate metal tightly to scaled flesh, muscle flexing beneath to make sure that it was tight enough, but not too tight. Taking a deep breath he let some smoke flow out of his nostrils and half closed his eyes as he prepared himself mentally for the fight to come. His Mistress had not said what he would be facing, but she had laughed over how much money she would make on him losing. With a growl he turned and picked up a rather large two handed warhammer, and placed it upon his shoulder.

Across the room and staring at him with a glimmer in his eye was Rithrod the Dwarf Quarter Master, that had been training Gaulirax for all these months. “Well lad, from I be hearin this is gon be quite the match. I hope ye be ready, but I been teachin ye so it should not be a problem at all aye?”

A slight chuckle escaped Gaulirax’s mouth as he stepped in front of the Dwarf. “I should be fine Rithrod, after all you let me have a day of rest before the match. I feel stronger than I ever have, and this hammer feels like it’s part of me.” He brough the hammer around and held it in both hands stroking the shaft and the head of the hammer. “Well.. I guess things are about to begin.” Stepping in front of a large door that lead from the Gladiator chamber out into the arena he waited. The roaring of the crowd as the last match ended flowed through him.

A hand rose up and patted Gaulirax on the back, and looking down he saw Rithrod now standing next to him staring at the door. “Ye’ll do fine lad. Now get out there and kill the bastard that is about to enter the arena with you.” Rithrod walked away and sat back on his bench and began to drink from his wine skin.

“You’re not going to watch?” Gaulirax asked curiously with his eyes narrowing at the dwarf wondering if his Quarter master had given up on him already.

“If ye die lad, I not be wantin to see it.” The dwarf said gruffly before seeming to lose himself in the win.

Just then the gong rang out announcing the combatants for the next fight to enter the arena. The gate slowly swung open revealing sand, and rows of seats filled with spectators. Their roaring cheers carried across the sands as they saw the half dragon, who so many months before had killed three men his first time in the arena. Enormous golden scaled dragon brought his head up as a sign for silence as he stood at the Orator’s balcony. “Our Half Dragon Gaulirax tonight will be fighting an arena favorite! The Minotaaauuuuur! Halfaran!” The crowd went into a enthusiastic fervor at the mention of the name and their eyes seemed to be glued to the gate across from Gaulirax as it opened.

The nine foot tall beast stepped from his gate carrying a enormous axe, and adorned in ragtag pieces of armor. Frothing spittle fell from the beast’s mouth darkening the hard packed dirty beneath him as it became soaked with the liquid. Halfaran stomped forwards hooved feet imprinting the dirt deep with the amount of weight the beast put into each step.

Gaulirax stared at the creature and his face wrinkled with rage at the thought that his Mistress had put him up against such a dangerous beast if only to make money off his demise. He brought his warhammer up in the air with one hand. “Today! I Slay this Minotaur! So that I can continue to fight! My name will be inscribed in stones magically protected so none can ever forget Gaulirax!”

The Orator seemed to grin a bit at that and then tilted his head and let out a belch of lightning that wracked the sky with a loud explosive thunder, a signal for the fight to start.

Gaulirax lurched forward as he took off into a sprint, his plated armor clanking and clattering with every step as his clawed feet tore through the dirt flinging pieces of it into the air behind him. The minotaur did the same as he charged towards Gaulirax in return his huge muscular form rippling with each movement as if the very tendons and ligaments might explode out of his flesh.

Gaulirax slowed as he saw the charge coming towards him, they were about the same size, but the minotaur likely weighed a hundred pounds more and was at the least a foot taller. Gaulirax decided to go a bit on the defensive. The Minotaur was wasting no time with attacking the dragonkin, the large two handed axe swinging out in a sweeping across the arena floor causing Gauliax to leap backwards and land on his back with a grunt. A shriek of excitement echoed through the arena at this, and Gaulirax only had time to roll before the axe slammed into the ground next to him.

The minotaur chuckled darkly and turned raising the axe once more, but quickly found that Gaulirax had already risen. The minotaur groaned as the warhammer pounded into his stomach knocking the air of him and sending him stumbling back as Gaulirax regained his composure stumbling as far away from Halfaran as possible.

A loud roar came from the Minotaur as he regained his breath and turned towards Gaulirax once more and swung his axe smashing it into the the Half dragon’s breast place tearing it open and causing pieces of the tore metal to plunge jaggedly into Gaulirax’s chest tearing flesh and causing blood to flow down his stomach. A scream of pain and rage issuing forth from the half dragon’s mouth as it happened. There was no time for retaliation though as the minotaur’s huge fist slammed into his chest at the same place causing the steel armor to dig in further and two ribs to snap.

Gaulirax was not the only one to take injury from that blow, Halfaran gave a great cry as he held up his now bleeding hand that had jagged chunks of breast plate sticking out of his knuckles. This was something to be taken advantage of and Gaulirax shoving away the sharp shooting pains in his torso moved forward in a lurch swinging his warhammer once more towards the minotaur only to have the wooden shaft of the axe block it’s path, but all was not lost in this attack as the axe’s shaft broke in half sending splinters raining into the air and falling all over the ground.

This small victory only lasted for a moment as the minotaur twisted slightly and stabbed a broken end of the axe shaft into the back of Gaulirax’s thigh sending a spray of blood across the ground causing him to stumble to his knees with a groan. The pain burned through him making his blood boil, his muscles bulged along his back and arms, smoke began to billow from his nostrils. The minotaur raised the remaining half of his axe preparing to deliver a killing blow against Gaulirax, but it was not to be as the half dragon’s head turned, and a stream of fire issued from his jaws barreling right into the minotaur’s face burning his eyes and sending much of the hair upon his head up in flames leaving his cranium smoking and the smell of burnt hair wafting about the arena.

With great effort Gaulirax stood and reached back with his free hand and yanked free the shaft gritting his teeth in pain and rage as he tossed the piece of wood aside, and turned to the screaming minotaur still holding it’s face. His claws grasped the warhammer shaft, and brought it around and up into Halfaran’s groin, the heavy steel weapon pressing into the soft sexual organs so quickly, with such force they crushed into a pulp. The pain that was suddenly shooting through the minotaur was nothing compared to his burnt face, but he would have no time to react as suddenly the hammer was moving once more crashing into his knee snapping it sideways and causing him to fall to the ground, a pile of bawling, screaming, agonized minotaur unable to see and wracked with extreme pain.

Gaulirax limped over towards the fallen Minotaur, and for the first time since the match began looked up into the audience. He stared at their astonished faces as they watched the end of a former champion of the arena. He finally settled to look at his Mistress who did not seem happy at all, in fact she seemed also as angry as Gaulirax himself.

He turned to look at the fallen minotaur once more and took a deep breath before shouting loudly. “See my power?! Behold my strength! Your champions are no threat to me!” He raises the hammer higher and brings it about and down in a arch onto the side of Halfaran’s head. Bone snapped, and popped, the minotaur’s eyes bursting from his skull to dangle by ocular veins, and muscles. Pink froth dripped from his nose and blood poured from his mouth as he gave a final shuddering breath causing pinky mucus like bubbles to come from his facial orifices before he died.

Gaulirax carefully stepped away from the body shuffling towards the gate that lead to the gladiator chamber, and he found himself barely being able to take each step he did. A trail of blood stained the dirt behind him as he walked through the gate and then crumpled onto the floor his hammer falling off to the side with a clang. His heavy raspy breathing catching Rithrad’s attention immediately.

The Dwarven quartermaster got up as quick as he could and ran over to Gaulirax rolling him onto his back. “Don’t worry lad, ye be alright. I’ll be gettin ye fixed up right away.”

The half dragon grinned and slid a hand over the dwarf’s shoulder with a chuckle. “I’m not done yet.” The clawed appendage immediately slid away and fell to the floor.

Rithrad just shook his head with a smile and patted Gaulirax’s face. “That’s right lad, ye ain’t done yet.” Then just as men wearing white robes came running into the room Gaulirax passed out.

* * *

The next few months moved by at a snail’s pace, Gaulirax was required a lot of bed rest to heal, and was only able to work out the minimum to keep up what he had gain, so that he didn’t regress to before he had begun training. He hated it, as he had spent day in and day out laying in bed or lifting just enough weight to not tear open his wounds, and keep his muscles healthy.

The day he was able to return to training was one of the greatest of his life. Gaulirax stepped into the training chamber, no more bandages, his wounds healed though scarred, he was full of energy, and excitement burned through his veins

Rithrad was sitting on his bench as normal, but this time there was something different in the room than normal, a thick metal bar with weight bolted onto each end. “There ye be lad. Bout time ye be gettin up. Here we got a barbell lad, something a little new that me and some boys cooked up in the forge. Ye gonna be lifting this with your arms at the elbows to the chest then back to the thighs then lifting it back to yer chest.” The dwarf grinned. “But that don’t be all lad, the entire time ye be liftin it.” He reached down and picks up a very long straight piece of flexible wood. “I’ll be whippin ye with this.”

Gaulirax frowned someone and walked over to the barbell and tested the weight feeling out how heavy it was. “What is this Rithrad? A hundred and fifty pounds?” He chuckled a bit thinking that perhaps Rithrad was joking.

“That’s right lad, ye gonna be strong as that minotaur ye killed. So get ready start liftin lad.” Gaulirax reached for the barbell and just as he did he felt piece of wood crack across the back of his legs making him growl angrily. “Yes lad! That’s what I want to hear! Now pick up that weight! Get mad!”

The bar was immediately gripped tightly in Gaulirax’s clawed hands and with a roar he lifted up the weight bringing it to his chest and letting it back down to his legs, and every time he lifted the barbell he felt the wood strike across his stomach, and each time he lowered it he felt the wood snap across his shoulders. He began getting angry the muscles across his body tensing and flinching with each strike. Smoke began to flow from his nostrils, but still he didn’t lash out as he sought to control his anger.

The weight lifting lasted for at least and hour as he felt his muscles begin to burn faster than they had before due to his time resting from his injures. One more piece of wood whipping across his chest and he tilted his head back and let forth a blast of fire from his mouth. He gave the weight one might left heft and shoved it above his head before dropping it on the ground, his clawed hands going to his thighs as he bent over and vomited all over the ground.

“Good lad, good. Ye be doing good, now rest. We be doing some more training in a bit, ye be going back to the practice dummy with the mallet. Gotta work on yer attacks, and then we gotta work on yer blockin, or ye gonna be having a rough sleep lad.” Rathrid said with a chuckle.

Gaulirax spend several minutes resting before going to work on the dummy, the mallet in his hands just felt so right as he cracked it across the practice dummy, the loud sound of wood against wood echoing through the chamber as he did this for almost an hour before taking a rest once more and drinking from a water skin.

“Now lad, ye been sleepin too much I thought ye might have turned into a wee babe! Let’s see what ye got!” Rathrid didn’t give Gaulirax a chance to even get up before charging at him, but the half dragon had been going over blocking in his mind the entire time he was healing and quickly pulled up the mallet and began to block the wooden sword. Gaulirax was kept on the defensive, but he seemed to be able to block just about every single attack only a few grazes here or there on his sides and arms.

There was a moment though when Rathrid overdid himself, and his sword slid between Gaulirax’s arm and body. The half dragon quickly took advantage his arm slamming down and catching the flat of the blade between his arm and his body, yanking it away and tossing it on the floor his hammer coming around and stopping several inches from Rathrid’s face. “Got you.”

“So ye did lad… So ye did. Guess I can’t take it easy on ye anymore.” The dwarf’s grin made Gaulirax’s stomach twist and he knew training was going to get harder, much harder.
