The Benson Hotel was a tall building. It was at least twelve stories tall. It was made of brick in and was capped in copper, turned green with age. The Hotel itself was large enough to take up an entire city block. Though on the ground floor business had found their way in. Most were restaurants, taking up advantageous places right to the left of the main business doors. There was the London Grill and El Gaundo. Directly across the street was a US Bank. Around the corner to the right was a little bit of construction, but not that much. The men were clearly repairing the facade on the old building across the street. Around the back side, from the main doors, was a Century Link store. Directly across from that was a night club, The Escape. Over all the streets were wide along with the sidewalks.

The sky was blue today, not a cloud in sight. Which is a relief; it was a good day to move sensitive equipment. If it had been raining, other plans would have had to been made. But fortune was with you. You're able to move everything into the lobby without a problem. The interior of the lobby is finely furnished in dark woods, but still it managed an open, bright air about it. Probably because of all the white marble on the floor. It's obvious to you that it costs a lot of money to stay here.

Before one of you even begins to think about going up to the counter, directly in front of the main doors, and checking in, an older woman comes down the stairs to your left. She’s accompanied by Cassie and two men, one of whom must be Jackie, your new camera man. The older woman smiles happily upon seeing the group. She passes through the small group of people in the lobby that are kind of looking at you funny. They can't quite figure out what you're here for.

"Did you get here alright?" The older woman beams. She's in her late fifties. She's shorter than most everyone but Cassie, who's the same height. The woman is Karen Benson*, the daughter of the original owner, Simon Benson. She turns to the man next to her and introduces him as George Benson*, her brother. They are nearly identical looking, despite being years apart. The sister has the same brown hair and eyes as her brother. They're both on the bigger side and have the same nose.

"I have two rooms for everyone to use." She smiles at Cassie and Molly, the only girls in the group. It was apparent that Karen was old fashioned that way. Not that there would be much sleeping going on when your Ghost Hunting. Still, it was a nice thought. "If you’d like to come with me I can fill you all in." She smiled again at everyone. She didn't want to spook her patrons, even if some were here to stay in a haunted hotel. They wanted the nice ghosts that the hotel was famous for, not the new unruly upstart that was causing all sorts of ruckus and mayhem.

All the investigators were local, either long term or new residents, which was why Karen was hiring your group. Though it’s still incredible how this woman even found you. You had barely gotten together and now you even had a legitimate job. In fact the job had been set up through the coordinator and slightly impromptu leader/employer, Molly. Not only did she hire you, but she even had most of the equipment a Ghost hunter would need. Go Molly.

*Fictional character. According to my research the hotel has changed hands numerous times, and didn't even originate as the Besnon (rather it started as the Oregon). For this story it has not.

Molly Heckler is practically vibrating with excitement. They actually scored an actual job, in a possibly haunted, beautiful building. Hearing her mother’s negativity on how ghost hunting wasn’t a way to make a living, she had feared this would fall short. That they wouldn’t make any money and her life savings would be getting a big chunk taken out of it (it partly had, considering all that she had bought, but it helped she had the money that didn’t go to college and her mother hadn’t demanded it back, surprisingly). But they actually got a job. It didn’t pay much, sure, but that isn’t what really matters to Molly.

She just loves the job. She doesn’t care about the money. She just wants to prove ghosts were real. She has seen them herself, after all, alongside her father. She wants to prove to her mother it was possible to make a living in this type of career, because it was. She truly believes that. And she'll show her mother it was. She couldn’t stop smiling as her and her brand new team – which she was sure to interview properly, she wanted people who were trust-worthy and would work well with others – go into the hotel to meet the current owners. She tries to not have too much of a bounce in her step; she doesn't want to seem annoyingly happy but it was hard not to be, considering.

The owners seem very kind and she’s thankful for that. It would make their first job that much better. She has a feeling this place was going to be great, that they were going to catch something on film or something. She just has a good feeling about their first job. She isn’t sure if that’s from the happiness or if this place will really be the real deal. She can’t help but beam back at the older woman. This was just so exciting and she had done it, all by herself. No help from her parents. Even used a lot of her own money. It feels good. “Yes ma’am, we got here all right.” She answers, old-fashioned manners she had been taught coming out. Her mother was like that, all about manners and no elbows on tables stuff. Her father hadn't been like that. Her parents were so different; maybe that's why they hadn't worked in the end.

She doesn’t mind the older woman being old-fashioned; she wouldn’t mind the extra room in her and Cassie’s room, actually. Not that they would be sleeping that much, that is. Molly is used to pulling all nighters and getting a lack of sleep. After all, she has been doing it for a lot of her life. And she was a college student, at one point. “It’s so nice to meet you both. As you know, I’m Molly Heckler and this is my team. I just want to thank you both again for hiring us.” She could keep talking, if she really wants too. She was just so happy, it was hard to not show how thankful she was because this was just giving her more hope she could really do this, show her mother she really could. And perhaps her father would finally contact her and she could tell him of her successes. She's sure he would love to hear about it and would be so very proud of her. Instead of speaking more, she grows quiet, to allow anyone else to speak if they wished.

"Maldición..." Shaun murmured as he gazed around the hotel. "This place is beautiful."

He was nervous, yes, but who wouldn't be? It was their first job after all! And in such a place with history...

A pang of nostalgia hit Shaun. The place had almost the same air to it as his father's museum; like it had a million stories to tell of what it had seen the past hundred or so years, but it was always up to it's occupants to unfold them. The only difference was that this place was much more grand, much more exciting, and possibly haunted of course.

He gave a grateful nod to Karen (whom he was tempted to call Grandma for her kind and old fashioned nature) before walking to Molly's side. He had a million questions buzzing around his mind, but the one that popped out his mouth was, "Are you nervous?"

Standing back a moment, Jackie watched as Karen greeted the group, followed by a very excited young woman stepping forward to address the hosts. After she was finished thanking their hosts for hiring him, he half-thought that she said something vaguely referential of her own parents, but quickly dismissed the thought as a man stepped in line with the young woman, asking if anyone was nervous.
"Eh, I don't really see much to be nervous about," Jackie replied. "At worst, I've noticed a couple of drafts chilling it a bit, but it seems fairly straightforward."
"Anyway, I'm pleased to meet you all," he continued, stepping towards Molly with a hand out for a shake. "Jackson Gelehrt, but I mostly go by Jackie. And I would assume that you're Molly Heckler?"

What a motley crew that had been assembled, Vincent thought. This was the first time he’d seen, let alone met, most of them. And yet he couldn’t shake off the feeling that they had all been meant to be here at this time. That something had drawn them here, together. He didn’t like the idea; being led around by the nose by some otherworldly force.

The elderly woman’s speech dimmed into the background as he looked around the lobby. The place was exquisite, by far the richest place he had ever been. What a first job they had landed. But the bustle of people, and the attention from them that the woman had drawn was making him uncomfortable. Unconsciously, he nervously ran a hand over the scar tissue on his face.

He tried to clear his thoughts of the growing foreboding feeling. He focused the purported job at hand, the new ghost. Vincent had a passing familiarity with the hotel, so this new entity must be more troubling. He had his doubts about what they could actually do to remedy the situation though.

He absent mindedly followed the group as to wherever the woman took them.

How beautiful, Cassie though to herself in astonishment as she gazed over the lobby. This wasn't the first time she had passed through it, but she couldn't help herself from admiring it's flawless charm once again. As she followed Karen to greet the rest of her team, she too a long glance glance around their surrounding environment. The gorgeous furnishing of the hotel was nothing compared to the cluttered apartment she and Jackie currently resided in, not by a long shot.
Cassie swiftly saved herself from drifting of into her own consciousness by turning her attention back to the group.
Her eyes first fell onto to Molly, who she could tell was thrilled to be starting their first job. Her joy reflected off Cassie's face, as she too shared a similar enthusiasm for the investigation. She was glad that the two of them would be spending more time together over the next few days.
Cassie stood by Karen silently as Molly stepped forward to introduce herself, along with their team in general, casting her head aside towards the mumbling Shaun when he delivered a question to the group.
Jackie was the first to answer and Cassie waited after her was done to deliver him a beaming smile accompanied by an exuberant exclamation of "That's the spirit!" She released a small chuckle when she noticed the irony of her statement.
As she watched Jackie introduce himself to the team, Cassie could not ignore the wave a joy that filled her body. She was ecstatic when Jackie had decided to join them, and now that they were finally together about to begin their first job, Cassie couldn't be any happier. She could feel that this was going to be a great experience for the both of them, whatever the reason maybe. There was only a matter of time before Cassie would be able to find out what that was, and the mere thought of what lied ahead of her peaked her inner curiosity. She was more then ready to begin.

It’s so nice to meet you both. As you know, I’m Molly Heckler and this is my team. I just want to thank you both again for hiring us.

Karen and George stood back a little as the crew greeted each other. It wasn't until the girl, Molly, talked to them that they jumped back into the conversation. Or rather it was George. "Not a problem." The older man said in a deeper baritone. Once everyone was willing to move, Karen lead the way past the stairs to a set of double elevators. They were gold, set against black with a pair of stylistic 'B's engraved on them. The woman happily explained that there were a few sets of elevators, since the build was a large 'U'. There were two, each on each end and this one here in the middle, with that many fire stairs also.

"We all can't take the same elevator up." Karen said happily as she pushed the button to call the elevator. "We're going to be on floor 12." Karen, her brother and whoever wanted claimed the first elevator. The Hallway of floor 12 was like any other hallway in the building. Large enough for three people to walk, if a bit uncomfortably. She lead the way down one of the hallways until she got to 1205 and 1207. She popped the door open to 1207 and passed off the room key to the person nearest to her.

Inside was a nice room. The walls a nice pale yellow. There were two large king sized beds. And most important, there was enough room to set up equipment. Karen gestured everyone inside and began her tale of the new ghost. "I'm sure you all know about our hotel and it's history of ghosts. The most popular being the man who walks down the staircase you've seen earlier and the woman in blue in the lobby." She smiled brightly, having had given this talk a bit. "Of course there are unsettled spirits down there, but they're mostly benign." He smile faded a bit. "It's here on floor 12 where we're having our new troubles. Before it was just the few sightings of our ghostly porter. He'd help people out of bed, or carry luggage or what have you. Or the woman in white. Even a receptionist once." Karen chuckled then sombered.

"Lately on this floor people have been seeing a man. And everyone I've heard tell this story says he doesn't speak, but there's something wrong about him. They're all scared of him. And it's beginning to show. The most recent case was that someone says they were almost shoved down the stairs by this ghost and what's when I called you." The older woman sighed. "The only other place he's seen is the lobby. I'd really like it if you could help us with this." Karen handed the crew the second room card for room 1205.

"Either George or I are always here. We help man the desk downstairs. Just give us a ring if you need anything." And with that, Karen left you to talk things over by yourself.

Molly felt a presence come beside her and turned to look. It was Shaun; she couldn’t help but smile because she knew her team had to be as excited as her about all of this. If not, she was probably excited enough for all of them. At his question, her smile dimmed a bit. Well, yeah, she was. Not as much as she thought she’d be.

It’s just, she always did this type of stuff with her father. He was always right there, lending a hand. And when he wasn’t, she was never in the lead. She could be considered the leader in this whole thing, considering she brought them all together. She enjoyed leadership roles, thrived in them, but this was a real job. She had never been on an actual paranormal job without her father. It was an odd feeling, nerve-wrecking, but something that excited her more than anything.

Her smile didn’t stay dim for long but before she could speak, Jackie, their newest member, was speaking up. Actually, she hadn’t personally met him and briefly turned her attention to him. “Yes, I am,” she said with a kind smile, taking his hand and giving it a firm shake. “It’s great to meet you, Jackie; I have a feeling you’re going to do well here.” She was so giddy, she felt like she could keep talking but she managed to stop before she started a ramble or something as stupid and embarrassing.

She let out a slight chuckle at Cassie’s exclamation. She had a feeling her and Cassie were going to get along really well. She flashed the other girl a smile before looking towards Shaun. “Don’t worry. I’m a bit nervous too but like Jackie said, this’ll be straightforward. You aren’t alone though,” she told him, briefly squeezing his arm in a reassuring gesture before she followed after Karen.

Naturally, Molly took the first elevator up. She wanted to ride with the older woman, in case she had anything more to say. Elevator rides were weird-feeling but her excitement only increased as the elevator slowly rose to floor 12. She gladly followed Karen, drinking in all her surroundings, all the details. This was so great. Being the nearest person, she took the room key and slipped inside the room. It was a very nice hotel room, obviously well cleaned and taken care of. She didn’t expect anything less of this place, though.

Of course she knew the history of ghosts in the hotel. Research was, of course, done when she got the call for the job. She had heard about this place, beforehand, anyway. Her father had talked about it but he had never investigated in it before. He had wanted too and Molly wished he knew where she was. She listened to the stories like she had never heard them before though, soaking them in and enjoying the tales. The new ghost, though, made her nervousness grow just the slightest. Not much but it was a small spike. She had been scratched before when she went on hunts with her father. It only happened two times and they never hurt too badly so it didn’t turn her off from it. Actually, it increased her passion, for some odd reason. She had never been pushed. Touched, sure, but pushing wasn’t something she had experienced.

She took the second room card with a sympathetic smile. “We’ll try our best, ma’am,” she told her softly before watching her leave. She turned to her team, clapping her hands together the best she could, considering she was holding the room cards. “So, how excited are you all?” she asked, handing the nearest guy one of the room cards, considering Cassie and her got their own room.

Shaun's anxiety eased up as responses filled the room. Thank God he wasn't the only one.

Shaun's legs moved almost robotically as he forced visit away from the lobby and into the second elevator. He hated to leave such a beautiful room. There'll be more to come, he silently reminded himself as he remembered the rest of the hotel's rooms.

His mind wandered as he followed the group. Thoughts and scenarios, mainly about what had happened in the past and what would happen in the investigation, filled his head. It was only until they reached the room that he crash landed back to reality.

He nodded as information was given about the ghosts. Some he knew about, others not so much. Shaun made a quick mental note to check on their history before the fun truly began. He smirked as they told of the new violent ghost. Oh yeah. This was definitely going to be a fun night.

As Karen and George left, Shaun plopped down in the nearest bed.

"So how excited are y'all?"

"I'm so hyped that I feel like I'm going to puke," Shaun replied in joking tone.

Jackie followed his new boss, shifting his bags and equipment around to make sure not to hit anyone as he did. Once they got up to their floor, he got out along with everyone else, following the group as they went down the hall to where their rooms were located. As they passed right next to a staircase, he felt a shiver run down his spine and glanced around, quickly spotting an A/C vent pointed more or less at where he'd been when he got the chill. Satisfied as to the cause, he carried on with the group, arriving shortly at their rooms.
Staying in the background while the conversational exposition carried on once they got there, Jackie mostly occupied himself with keeping his opinions on the absurdity of the entire premise leading them to be at the hotel was made more clear from making themselves apparent in his facial expressions, and maintaining a politely neutral appearance.
As he had followed Molly on the way up to their rooms, he was the nearest to her when she turned to pass off the second room key. Shifting the weight of his equipment, he accepted the key, responding to her question as well. "Well, you seem to have pulled together a nice mix for the crew, so it ought to be interesting, at least," he said as his reply, giving a slight grin.
