What are the rules on swearing? I think it would make Mackenzie a lot more realistic if I could include some swears (she's a former tradesman from a rough part of town, come on) but I didn't want to break any of your rules, Protagonist.

Together they repaired the fence, the familiar din of the mallets thankfully drowning out the perennial tinnitus. They had almost reattached the last splintered section when Lewis asked if Mackenzie had heard something.

Immediately she dropped the mallet, hands automatically finding the familiar leather grip of the spear, yanking it from where she had thrust it vertically into the withered grass. She perked up her ears for any extant sound but all she could hear was that godforsaken eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, and the silence of the deserted street. "I didn't hear anything, but the way my hearing's gone that doesn't mean much. What was it?" she asked, speaking in a low voice. It wouldn't be zombies in the daytime... raiders? Some new abomination created by the virus? She took a few steps back from the fence, cursing herself for giving up on martial arts all those years ago.

"You got another hammer?" she asked, inspecting the fence section Lewis was working on. Ideas began to swirl through her head: there was a good bit of sheet metal back at the shop, and probably some acetylene torches... no barbed wire, but that was easy enough to make... of course, retrieving any of it depended on whether or not zombies had taken up residence back there.

Recovering from the reverie, she stuck out her hand. "Mackenzie Stuart."

Mackenzie hefted her backpack, taking a moment to appreciate the reassuring clack of the few cans it contained and the friendly midmorning sun that kept the zombies off the streets. She continued up the deserted street, her pace relaxed but her gaze continually roving across shop fronts, alleyways, and rooftops, squinting as she walked towards the sun. During the day, it was your fellow humans you had to watch out for; depending on who you met, you might be in for more trouble than you'd find with the zombies. She attempted to keep an ear out for suspicious sounds, but the tinnitus always made that difficult. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....... She swore softly to herself, half out of frustration, half just to pass the time; cursing was an art in which all tradesmen were quite skilled.

Her trusty spear served as a pretty good walking stick, its leather-wrapped end softly saying tung, tung, tung as she progressed up the street. Up ahead a decrepit spire distinguished itself from the surrounding flat brick and shingling: a church? As she approached, she remarked that the building itself, while obviously falling apart, had a reasonably well-kept fence around it. Upkeep meant inhabitants, which might mean trouble. She was about to double back when she locked eyes with a young man who appeared to be inspecting the fence. Shit.

She couldn't see very much of him, just what was visible through the fence. Since he'd already seen her, though, Mackenzie figured she might as well test the waters. And a fenced-off church was more easily fortifiable than most of the buildings she'd seen on her trek today... She nodded at the man. "You look like you could use some help with that fence."

Please critique if you feel inclined! Also, the bio got kinda long; sorry about that.

-Name: Mackenzie Sherman
-Age: 34
-Appearance: She is 6'3", her skin tanned brown and showing signs of early aging from working outdoors for nearly 15 years. Her medium brown hair is cut short, and her eyes are brown. She is muscular and very broad in the shoulders, weighing in at 223 lbs. She wears heavy-denim jeans, a tee-shirt, a black flight jacket, and steel-toed work boots. Reference, although not exact.
-Convenient previous occupation/hobby: Welder, with some very brief training in machining and electrical work
-Starting equipment: Lathe-sharpened steel bar with leather-wrapped handle, for use as a primitive spear; key-card which grants access to the machine shop and stockrooms of her former workplace (although it may be overrun by zombies by now)
-Bio: Mackenzie is an Icarus City native; her parents ran a mechanic's shop at which she began to help at a young age. Mechanically inclined but an average student at very best, she left high school to begin vocational training at 17, and became a certified welder after two years of training. She was hired by the city's premier fortification design and construction firm, beginning as a welder and eventually working her way into a shift-management job, until she had been offered the surprise promotion to full (albeit probationary) field engineer. As part of the company's "bottom-up" design philosophy, this meant spending two months in training at each of the company's foundational trades, electrical work and machining (she was permitted to skip the customary welding stint, for obvious reasons), as well as taking community college courses to make up for her defecits in math.

She wasn't even halfway through the machining pseudo-apprenticeship when the city fell. She, her mentor, and some of the professional machinists were working in one of the company's myriad metal shops when the notice went out company-wide: infected in the city, shelter in place, God help us all. They raided the cafeteria a floor below for whatever supplies they could find, and then the machinists' stockroom for whatever metal stock looked like it might hold an edge or a point. Being sheltered in a basement and thus unlikely to attract hostile attention, the group survived reasonably well for a week or so while the initial chaos died down, but supplies soon ran low. It became clear that the group would have to seek refuge elsewhere, if they wished to avoid cannibalism and lethal infighting. Mackenzie managed to locate a cannery with a stock of unshipped product sufficient to sustain a single person indefinitely. She lived undetected in the cannery for almost two years, but a gang of raiders recently discovered the facility; she barely escaped with two days' worth of food, and her life.

Quick question: can we assume that the city had some kind of anti-zombie fortifications that have recently been overrun or nullified somehow?

Great! I'll have a CS up within an hour or two.

Is one more welcome? I'm thinking about a tradesman-type character, primarily carpentry-based but with dabbling experience at welding and electrical work.
