History
The Graven Brothers were once proud inheritors of the Blood Angels, Sons of Sanguinius. However, after their first campaign ended in disaster, the chapter changed. They became melancholic and dour, changing the name their chapter once had to that of the 'Graven Brothers' as they came to terms with the fact they, their father chapter and indeed all of humanity, would one day be destroyed. The Chapter began to isolate itself, becoming obsessed with the Idea of Martyrdom and heroic sacrifice. For many years they went on like this until they were called to defend the world of Arikath, a paradise world, from an encroaching ork invasion. They arrived and fought brvely, but soon realized they were outmatched.
The invading orks turned out to be the spearhead of a much larger Ork force, one that would no doubt crush the Graven Brothers. Unanimously, the Chapters captains and other leadership decided this was not their time and pulled the chapter back, letting the ork destroy the planet before obliterating it from orbit. This caused the death of many millions of nobles, high ranking Imperial Guard and other invaluable humans to the Imperium. The Inquisition in fact took it as a sign of cowardice, and declared the Chapter excommunicate. All as one the Inquisition descended onto the Graven Brothers fortress monastery, intent on purging the Chapter from existence. Though they fought bravely, it was very obvious the chapter would not survive the attack. To this end, their Chief Sanguniary Priest Ambrosius Katsarous chose to escape. He gathered the Chapter Death Company and chaplains to him in secret, and secured the Reclusiarch's Battle Barge. Quietly he and his chosen marines embarked on the battle barge, and broke their way through the Imperial blockade while their brothers were slaughtered below.
After their escape the 'Chapter' now hardly larger than a company drifted in space, searching for a purpose, a sign. As most of the Death Company was lost to the Black Rage and Red thirst Ambrosius Katsarous was voted de-facto chapter master by those sane enough to do so. He had a vision in his mind, to cure the Graven Brothers of the afflictions of their forebearers, and make their own Imperium where they would rule. His first order was for all remaining brothers, even the few not in the Death company before hand, take on the Red and Black.
It was then the Sanguinary Priest began his experimentation on brothers affected by the Black Rage and Red thirst. He trained the Chaplains, and all other brothers not affected by the afflictions, the ways of a Sanguinary Priest. He was searching for something more important to the brothers than anything else, a cure to the Black Rage and Red thirst. Miraculously, he was succesful, and all the brothers who were afflicted were cured.
However there were several serious side effects. For one, though they were cured of the Black Rage and Red thirst many appeared to remain insane, believing themselves to be Sanguinius. In addition, it resulted in the loss of the black Carapace and Progenoid organs in future aspirants, stopping any recruitment. It was then they began to create their Empire, intent on regaining their ability to recruit, and maintain the great peace they had discovered.
