Zafiriel
”Zafiriel Marie Louise! Dear Lord, am I disappointed in you!”
Grandfather Giancarlo was pacing back and forth in his reception room. Zafiriel, sat in a cushioned sofa in the corner staring at the floor, was mortified. Her cheeks were glowing with a rosy tint. She batted her eyelids to prevent tears from running down her cheeks; it would ruin the makeup her maids had applied on her. Firiel did not quite like her stuffy, heavy lashes sticking out to darken the view she had of the room. When Grandfather hit his cane on the marble floor with a loud clank, Firiel couldn’t help but flinch.
’Don’t show emotion. Don’t show emotion. Else, Grandfather is gonna scold you. Don’t show em –’
”Zafiriel Marie Louise! Are you listening what I have to say about this… incident?!”
”Y-yes, maestro, I am”, she said, wiping the tears from the corner of her eye. As Grandfather’s codemnding gaze fell on her, she straightened her posture and put her hands on her lap.
”Fine, as you should! Now, let me get to the actual issue here. – Why, Zafiriel Marie Louise, why did I see you tangle yourself with the son of Monsieur Leblanc?! He is an important business partner of mine! I do not want to have the name of Paolini get sullied by the HEIR to the corporation! Be so kind and explain yourself!”
”As I said, Grandfather, it was a mere accident. It just so happened I was not looking where I was going and tripped on Monsieur Leblanc – and then we both crashed down on the floor – ”
”ZAFIRIEL MARIE LOUISE! Never, never should you behave in such a manner! It is shameless, impudent – lewd, even! Never, ever let me witness such a horrifying scene again!”
”Yes, Grandfather. I understand.”
As Grandfather’s words echoed in her mind, Zafiriel found herself lying in a boy’s lap, staring up at a pair of golden eyes. She could feel the two teens burn her forehead with their curious stares. In just a few moments, all sorts of feelings flushed through her head. She had acted incosiderately once again – and towards the person she had just hurt. Worriedly, she glanced upwards at the bewildered boy. She was about to say something -
All of a sudden, Silas started to laugh. He laughed and laughed. There seemed to be no end to his tears of joy. A small cloud of steam erupted from the top of Firiel’s head. Surely he was laughing at her and the other girl, them both having embarrassed themselves almost simultaneously.
”Not sure if you've noticed but your panties have been showing this whole time. My advice? Invest in something a little less short. But hey, you do you!”The other girl turned beet red. In her, Firiel could see a ghost of her younger self. Only it was an overjoyed teenage boy chastising her instead of a furious grandfather. Firiel knew exactly what the girl was going through. She raised her arm to reach out to Kanako to tell her it’s alright. To say she was not the only one having done such things by accident. Her attempt was cut off by Kanako shouting at the still laughing Silas.
”Y-y-y-you're the one looking up indecently! Y-y-y-y-y-you should know not to look up in the first place!”
Firiel felt her upper body wiggle as Silas laughed at the girl’s remark. She felt his rapid breath on her neck – a sensation wiping all other thoughts from her mind. Her whole body shivered with a feeling she had never felt before. She felt a drop of sweat run down her temple. Why has her heart beating so fast? Her rapid heartbeats hammered her eardrums like a summerly thunderstorm. Was she sick? After all, she had not been wearing a jacket during those chill nights during her travels.
”How you doing down there?”Silas’s earnest question broke Firiel free from her stupor. Suddenly, she was reminded where she was – sitting in Silas’s lap in the hallway she had just blown. Firiel knew Silas was looking at her expecting an answer. Not daring to meet his gaze, she tightly squinted her eyes close. Carefully, avoiding touching the boy, she raised her upper body so she was practically sitting in his lap. She let out a sigh before replying.
”Je vais bien, merci. I’m okay.”As Firiel opened her eyes, she was blinded by a sudden blast of sunlight squirming its way through the sooty glass. As the light scattered across the hallway, Firiel saw it mirror itself in a strand of Silas’s hair. Slowly, she lowered her gaze.
”Pardonnez-m –”The word got stuck in her throath. She was staring at Silas with wide eyes, their noses almost touching. His golden eyes really were beautiful. They were shining almost as bright as the sunrays dancing on the ash-covered floor. For a moment, time froze engulfing the two teens in their own little world. Firiel felt her pulse thump against her temples and wrists. Her face was growing very hot –
”Never, ever let me witness such a horrifying scene again!”The spell was shattered by a memory of her Grandfather’s fuming face. In a godly speed, Firiel sprung on her feet. Realising the situation she had just been in, she bowed to Silas, grabbing her trembling knees.
”Pardonnez-moi! Pardon! I was – I was – tes yeux, magnifiq – non, non! Pardon! I di’nt meaned to!” Merde! This is bad… This is very bad. He will surely hate me now. Bloody hell, Zafi… What was I even thinking?!After a while Firiel got up. Her cheeks were glowing rosy, tears running down her cheeks. She bit her lower lip trying to stop her emotions flowing in. She shot a tearful glare to both Silas and Kanako. It all was ruined. She would not dare to talk with these two again in the near future.
Firiel felt a sudden urge to burst in tears of shame. Not wanting to further provoke either of the other two teens, she took a few steps back, planning on making a run for it.
