The things several of my characters, especially the main protagonist, have gone through would definitely classify as hell.
I just don't like needless torture porn stories (for those who don't know the reference, basically a story where the sole purpose of the narrative is to justify excessive physical torture of one or more characters, though there's usually a specific target), especially when the sole purpose of the work is to facilitate the existence of one. I'm not implying Re:Zero is this itself, but when someone describes a story as "main character torture, the series", it's a very good way to put me off.

but I really dislike stories which prioritize torturing the main character or even just needlessly torturing characters period.
