”No cheating at all?” An eerily cheery voice came from just off stage after several of the Ishtar students agreed upon playing fair. “Not even a scheme or a clever deceit? I’m having a hard time believing we all belong to the same school.” A boy wearing a freshly cleaned suit, who also had green hair but in a more sickly shade, stepped out of the shadows. Strapped to him was a brass alto saxophone that he was carefully adjusting the reed on as he approached the group. Those who had classes dealing with the more dark arts would recognize this student as Seth Murdock; a very odd character, but an adept Necromancer.
”Very well, I guess I’ll also resign to playing fair. Though it seems like a waste of our talents.” Seth remarked with a playful smirk. He honestly didn’t mind not cheating on his end. There wasn’t much he could really do unless he got his hands on one of the Marduk instruments and gave them a quick coating of poison. But he was also aware most of the Ishtar students mastered in espionage, while Marduk was equally skilled in buffing themselves. Without the sabotage from Ishtar, Marduk would undoubtedly have an advantage. Then again, everyone knows Ishtar plays dirty. Perhaps by playing fair, Marduk will think they have a different plan yet to be revealed. They’ll get paranoid and start slipping up. A delicate mind game to play, but one that might actually work.
”Now then, do we have all our bandmates here? Or do I need to conjure up a few substitutes.”
Naturally a golden blonde, Seth has taken to dying his messy hair bright green to match the color of his soul flames. Combined with piercing yellow eyes and pale skin, many at first glance would mistake the young man as a demon come to tempt them. While not graced with a silver tongue like some of his fellow Ishtar classmates, Seth does try to carry himself in the same way, dressing in a black suit and tie to give the appearance of elegance.
Age: 18
Bio: If you have never heard the Murdock name before, count yourself lucky; It means you have yet to lose anyone.
The Murdock Morgue had been operated by the same family for generations and catered to nearly everyone in the city. Skilled coffin makers and masters of bone and blood magics, the Murdocks prided themselves at making any who had recently departed look as beautiful and peaceful as possible before they are laid to rest. It was not an easy task by any means. In a world filled with untold dangers, and a specific group being hunted by any means, there was no telling how someone would go out. But nevertheless, Clide and Sharon Murdock strived to make sure everyone could have an open casket no matter how much manipulation was needed.
Continuing with tradition, the Murdocks sought to teach their sons the same magics they had mastered so that they may continue the family business. However, their eldest son, Seth, didn’t seem to have the same connection they had. He struggled to reshape the flesh of the departed while his younger brother Cody was a natural. It became clear rather quickly who would indeed be taking over the morgue when they grew up. Though they never said anything, Seth could feel his parents began to favor Cody. They started focusing their attention more to the younger sibling during lessons leaving Seth to mostly fend for himself. At gatherings they would ask Cody to show off his abilities to the guests, while Seth simply stayed at their side.
He would not be deterred, though. Since the family lived above the morgue, it was a simple matter of sneaking down stairs every night to practice. But in the dark quiet of the moonlight, in the company of those who were no longer of this world, Seth began to hear voices in his mind. At first they were nothing more than faint whispers mistaken for the wind. Yet with every night they grew, louder and louder. Each one called to him though no one spoke. He could feel their presence yet was alone. They compelled him to look deeper than the flesh and bone before him, to reach into the endless void. And so, he plunged his hands into the great beyond, and found he could manipulate bodies, just not with their earthly components.
At the age of 15, two years after he found how to reach beyond the mortal realm, Seth was now able to fully bring back and command a single body on a whim. Though he soon found he had gone as far as he could on his own. His parents had never delved into Necromancy, and his schooling had no courses on such a macabre subject. If he ever wanted to truly hone his skills, he would need to go to the one place where such things were welcomed with open arms; Ishtar School for Creative Minds.
Having long given up on running the family business, Seth begged his parents to send him to Ishtar. They did not have many connections, but driven by their love for their son and regret for making him feel lesser, Seth’s parents got to work. They called in every favor and pulled every string until Seth’s application for admission was sitting on Nergal’s desk. Seth waited every morning for the mail to show up, until the fateful day when he finally received his acceptance letter. Now at the age of 18, having studied the magics of the dead for three years, Seth has become one of the most capable necromancers of his time. Now it’s time to see if he can put his skills to the test.
Mundane Skills: Outside of magic, Seth is an extremely talented knife thrower. It’s not uncommon for him to have an abundance of throwing knives on hand at all times. He has also taken to learning Alchemy. He finds it’s a lot like cooking but with a magical kick. He has also picked up playing the saxophone and is an expert at strategy games.
Magic: Necromancy:
Summon Minions: The primary spell of any necromancer. At his current level, Seth is able to summon a max of 3 basic undead creatures to his side. Skeletons, zombies, ghouls, doesn't even need to be human! As long as it is mindless and dead, Seth can command it. He can even bring back minions who have just been slain. After all, death didn’t stop him the first time.
Skull Missile: A basic magic projectile that gives the appearance of a burning skull. Though not very strong, they have a decent knockback and can be fired in relatively quick succession. This allows them to be a good hindrance to someone trying to maintain focus or avoid the undead monsters trying to separate their blood from their body.
Soul Steal: A bit of a misleading name, this spell doesn’t actually steal your soul, but it sure feels like it. If Seth is able to grab or have direct contact with another magic user, he can drain their magical energy and give it to himself. It’s a quick way to heal wounds and rejuvenate his power.
Spirit Hands: From the ground Seth can summon two large skeletal arms engulfed in spirit fire. Though they can only be summoned in close proximity, Seth had direct one to one control over them. Every movement or gesture of his arms is followed by the spirit hands and any attempt to move independently of them will cause them to vanish. Though the main function of these arms is for deflecting incoming attacks, get too close and you may find yourself in their skeletal grips.
Enchant Poison: Be wary of any blade or projectile coming from Seth, you never know if even the slightest cut will have you feeling fatigued and nauseous. This is of course due to the fact Seth can enchant any object to have poison on it in varying degrees. A weapon with a low dose will be nearly impossible to notice in battle, but will only leave you with the above effects for a minute or so. A higher dose will be easier to spot as the venomous enchantment gives off a sickly green glow. These doses can last for hours, and even cause those inflicted to pass out.
Seance: Though Seth can always detect and feel the presence of the dead, directly communicating with them is another matter entirely. This usually involves a dedicated ritual of being at a place where the deceased would likely inhabit while also possessing certain items of importance. It takes a tremendous amount of power and patience. On top of that there’s no guarantee the dead even want to talk. So while it's not impossible, it's not something that can be done on a whim.
Personality: One would think dealing with death and decay would turn a person's demeanor to a dark and brooding one. Seth however is the exact opposite. Loud, obnoxious, and over all a complete goofball. He is just as likely to summon a skeletal warrior simply to high five it as he would for use in combat. He does not share the same disdain or disgust for his magic as others do, and will flaunt his necromantic powers at a whim. Some would say disturbing the dead for such trivial things is disrespectful, Seth would say they weren’t busy with anything else.
This may give the appearance that Seth is uncaring. Quite the opposite, in fact. His humorous attitude is to make others laugh and brighten up the room. After spending his whole life around the dead and knowing what it's like to feel pushed aside, Seth has grown to appreciate life and wants to make sure others are living their best as well. In the end he is just a curious student willing to learn even the most taboo schools of magic purely in the pursuit of bettering the world at large. And hey, a little power along the way never hurt.
Faction (Marduk, Ishtar, or Cassandra Club when it's founded): Ishtar for now. Cassandra once formed. Are you a Descendant of the Illuminated Poet?: No

“Hey! Where are you going?” Royal called out to Black Cat as his spotter abandoned his post. It was only after the words had left his lips did he feel the barrel of his rifle get pushed skyward and his eyes locked with the scaling zombie. Instinctively Royal jumped back out of clawing distance and pulled the trigger. He watched with panicked breathing as the corpse was knocked from its perch and fell from the window. A close call to be sure, but it wouldn’t compare to what was to come.
While the immediate threat had been dealt with, the sound of his claymore mines going off below brought the sniper no comfort. His position was compromised and his only defense had already been exhausted. He had to follow Black Cat’s example and leave now.
Without another thought, Royal turned on the team chat. “Attention Crusaders. My position is compromised. You’ll have to go without sniper support until I can relocate. If I don’t make it out of here, I’ll see you all at the after party.”
Switching off his mic, the Ranger scooped up the half full energy drink can he had left and chugged what remained. Sliding the empty can into his bag, he bolted down the stairs after his feline companion. Assuming he hadn’t already made it out or been mauled on his way.
Taking the glass from Cait with one hand and picking up the card tossed at her with the other, Lin couldn’t help but smirk as she read the name. “Heh, I think you’re starting to know me too well, Caprice.” She remarked sliding it in her bracer to join Ami. “I guess you better take Maria then. We probably shouldn’t leave her behind a second time.”
It was at that time the place went from a bit full to crowded. While Caprice was cheery as ever to introduce herself, Lin’s feelings were the complete opposite. Instead of a proper introduction, she simply sipped at her scotch and gave a two finger wave to the Black Pentacle and other newcomers. It wasn’t hard to tell that the monk was not a fan of the revolving door of characters in the tower.
She wasn’t just going to sit and drink, however. With two cards to her name, Lin felt she might as well add to the collection. Getting up from her chair she ventured over to the shop that had opened. Feeling like testing lady luck, Lin purchased a completely random card. When the exchange was complete she checked the name of her latest addition and stated a loud “And Roma makes three. Should be ready for anything.”
A bracer full of cards and a fist full of scotch, Lin couldn’t help but actually feel a bit excited as Cait opened yet another portal for them to venture off into. Though she still despised the idea of sharing any loot, she had to admit going in with everyone gave them a better chance of even completing whatever challenge awaited them. Downing the last of her drink, Lin haphazardly tossed the empty glass in Cait’s direction before wordlessly walking in.
The neon flash and lights of the new world were both oddly comforting, and equally off putting. It almost reminded her of Miso City at night, a time and place she was very familiar with, but the buildings here were far from the traditional ones from back home.
Failing to take note who was with her and assuming everyone came to the same location, Lin instead walked out of the alleyway and began looking around. “Is it just me, or are there a lot of clocks here.”
"GAH!” Royal yelled out as the uninvited guest intentionally startled him. “Holy crap, dude. Where did you come from?” The sniper asked as he tried to catch his breath. He was no stranger to the “surprise log in” trick, but this was the first time anyone had done it to him.
As the over eager Black Cat talked about the cosmetic shop, Royal simply shook his head and turned back to his scope. Things were already kicking off as it turned out the undead horde was packing heat, he really didn’t have time for spooky cosmetics. Part of him was considering throwing the cat out to spare him of any unnecessary distractions, but he reconsidered the moment Black Cat made mention of infinite ammo.
”Well well, I remember this little guy.” Royal said recognizing the drone that had given him a charged shot during the raid the day before. ”Alright then, you can stay. Just make sure nothing sneaks up behind us.”
Turning his attention back to the fight below, the ranger once more proved his worth as a marksman. The high wattage of his rifle combined with his junction drive more than made up for the damage reduction on the zombies, and with ammo currently not being an issue, Royal was letting loose. One by one he was dropping every zombies in his cross hairs. Unfortunately, the horde mode was living up to its name. No matter how many he killed, he couldn’t seem to make a dent in their numbers, and the other Crusaders weren’t fairing much better. Things only grew worse as the fog hiding the zombies spawning pushed forward as well.
”Dammit dammit dammit!” Royal cursed as his established over watch slowly lost it’s strategic value. ”Alright. They want to play it that way? Watch this.” He said offhandedly to his spotter.
With the flick of a switch the sniper’s scope changed to have a violet hue illuminating all heat sources with a soft orange glow. Of course the zombies themselves gave off no heat signature, but their weapons sure as hell did. Any of the undead who fired off a shot would be left exposed to Ranger’s laser fury.
Thinking he had turned the fog into his own advantage, Royal was left unaware that the walls of his castle were already being scaled.
Nothing loosens someone's grip like repeated punching followed by a magic missile. Freed from the aquatic foe, Lin immediately started swimming back to the surface. Without the luxury of a sugary flotation device it took her a little longer to breach the water. However, the moment the monk came up for air, she found she was no longer treading water, but instead sitting next to Caprice at none other than the Dangeki Cafe.
“What the fuck?” Lin yelled out as she looked back and forth for any remnants of where they just were. “What just happened? Why are we back here? Where’s Maria?”
Completely bewildered, Lin turned to Caprice who had seemingly shrugged everything off and made herself a drink. Not a bad plan at all. Turning to the bar, the monk rested her head on one hand and held out the other with two fingers out to flag down Cait.
“Ugh. Cait, get me some scotch. This place is giving me a migraine.”
"Wow. You really are always this venomous.” Xander remarked unsurprised by Theana’s hostility. “First of all; none of your business. Second of all; I’m not a LARPer, I’m a Cru-” The boy ended his rebuttal short as he glanced back at the scene unfolding with the Crusader’s ever professional Deputy Saffron. Giving his alliance would probably not help his case at this moment. ”-I mean, that’s also none of your business.”
Before things could get further heated, Kenji, the Captain of the Scourgers and Theana’s boyfriend took a seat and defused the situation almost instantly. For a guy whose specialty was PvP, he seemed very adept at peacemaking.
”It’s cool. Was just curious about her motives in the raid, but I guess some things are better left as a mystery.” He said turning his gaze back to Theana as a subtle way to let her know he didn’t buy her story. She very well could have been telling the truth and was just bored, but something told him there had to be more to it.
Regardless, Xander wasn’t oblivious to social queues. Now that the couple was seated and had their food, they would want to dine in peace. Luckily for Xander he spotted a rather ravishing looking woman with fiery orange hair sitting alone at the bar.
”Anyway, I’ll let you two enjoy your dinner. I’m gonna see if I can’t get at least one number tonight. Cheers.
As predicted, Xander ended the night with five strikes and a cold shower. At least the kind folks at HGO knew how to get his mind off of things. He awoke the next day to find a beta demo of the Horde mode was to be released that afternoon and pretty much every player was eager to try it out. After a few odd missions here and there to kill time, Royal Ranger made his way to the Crusader’s main hub well before the scheduled start time and began setting up.
Finding a structure with the highest vantage point with a clear view of the area, Royal made himself at home. Checking for all possible points of entry, the sniper made sure any enemy would be warmly greeted by a claymore mine. Once he was satisfied with his defences, Royal took a knee and placed his rifle against an adjacent wall. Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a metallic cylinder and grabbed hold of the ring on the top. A soft ksh sounded as the highly caffeinated energy drink was opened and half of it was chugged away. Setting the unfinished can to the side, Royal grabbed his rifle and hopped on the team chat.
”This is Royal Ranger checking in. I’m setup in the NorthWest with minimal obstructions. Should be able to provide overwatch for the whole area so gimme a shout if you need some support. Now who’s ready to tag and bag these undead freaks?”
