Elsa pulled her head from her hands in time to hear the accusation. In shock, she stared at the maids, seeing their triumphant faces. Everything clicked into place with horrific clarity.
She had been set up.
"I..." she stammered for a moment, her voice cracking before she tried again. "I wasn't made aware this was yours," she tried to explain calmly. "It was presented to me. I have not left this area. I don't know where your rooms are nor could I have gotten access to them."
She prayed the woman was at least a little reasonable. If anyone thought about it at all they would see the logic flaw here. Elsa was a human slave. How would she have known or even had access to the Lady's clothing, especially something as fine as this?
"I am not suicidal enough to steal from a Lady," she continued. "I will gladly change, wash the garment and return it to you. And in the future I will not take anything that is offered to me by those who would cause trouble."
