Fire and Faith (Seeking interest and GM help for an idea)

Hello, I'm still fairly new here and learning my way around but I had an idea for a group roleplay that won't leave me be. The problem is I've never ran a group roleplay so I have no idea what to do or how to start. All I have is an idea for a world that I really want to play in. If anyone else is interested in playing in this world please post here and let me know! Also if anyone is willing to either help me run this or walk me through the process of running a group roleplay please get in touch as well. Thank you.

Here is my idea. Its basicly just a setting I came up with so anything within that setting that fits is possible. The only race is humans though so it might be considered more low fantasy than some other worlds.

A long time ago, magic was accepted and freely used. It was a corner stone of the world and many mages made deals with spirits and elemental beings to accomplish wonderous things. However when a coven of mages accidentially destroyed one of the worlds greatest cities an upstart group of non magicals who feared magic saw their chance. Under the guise of a new religion they preached that magic would slowly destroy the world if it was not banned and its users cleansed. The religion preached that the great god of life was angered by the destruction of his favored city that was destroyed by magical fire. The only way to appease the god they said was to consign every mage to the fire in return.

And so began the Hunts. Hundreds of years later the religion has created a church that holds more power than even the nobility. The church instills fear into the remaining mages who have been forced into secrecy and hiding yet the common man loves the feeling of security the church brings them. The fact that most education and charity related projects are run by the church only helps with its popularity. Mages and anything unnatural is feared. The spirit and elemental worlds have gone so long without contact that they have gradually twisted, their inhabitants becoming possessive and demanding of any mage who dares summon them. Now these beings are called demons, a name meant to further inspire fear in the masses.

Few things are know to the public about magic and mages save both are to be feared and reported to the church. However mages are not made, they are born. Everyone has a small chance of manifesting as a mage but this has long been forgotten. Another thing is that magic often reacts to the emotions of its caster so mages who manifest and don't learn control are quickly found and burned by the church.

For more details on the church think something similar to the catholic teachings but with the addition of magic being the ultimate crime and sin.

This world could be played several ways but mainly I made it to explore the topics of intrigue, religion, corruption, and politics in a world with fantasy elements. I would also love to explore character development and interaction. Mages might be desperate to regain power or they might hate themselves but fear dying or they might just be trying to hide and live in peace. Those in the church have also forgotten that their founders based their faith on a lie, that was never recorded so they honestly believe everything they preach.

The party is beginning already as Nicolai prepares to enter. He had tried to bring a book to this gathering but his Father put his foot down quite harshly on that idea. No. The Crown Prince of Astaria had to do more princely things tonight. Like socializing. Heaving a soft sigh of mild exasperation the golden haired Prince steps down the staircase and into the ballroom. Wearing formal attire of the finest dark blue and pale gray that has been trimmed in gold thread he looks like something from a storybook. His expression is serene and calm as he steps quite gracefully into the room as he is announced. The grace with which he moves is an easy fluid thing. His looks while softer than some men still manage to draw attention, not that he notices. No. He doesn't notice how people look at him, he is too caught up in studying them. A fascinated blue gaze tracks anyone of interest as he makes his way through the crowds, weaving his way towards a place where he might observe until he wishes to join in the socializing himself.

In one corner of the ballroom lurks a beautiful yet faintly intimidating figure. Countess Sorcha Ebonwood stands regal and poised, like a serpent waiting to strike down any who get to close. A glass of wine rests in her hands though it seems she has yet to drink from it. The Countess has her hair up for tonight, silver combs design to look like snakes coiling through it to hold it in place. Her gown is black silk, elegant yet simple with a flowing layered skirt. The neckline on that dress is quite daring too, baring pale skin in a teasing manner. No one seems too eager to approach her so far so she settles for studying and throwing challenging glances at any whose gaze dares linger to long on her person. She doesn't appear hostile, yet every time someone looks her way those dark eyes latch onto them with such a burning intensity and weight that no one so far has been able to withstand withstand.

Prince Nicolai of Astaria

Golden blonde hair is kept at just below ear level and well groomed, there is also a subtle scent of citrus that follows him its main source being those golden waves. His eyes are a rich blue, mimicking the waves of the sea in color. His movements are always those of someone who is graceful and confident yet unwilling to make a show of things.

Interests:

Nicolai enjoys studying things, mainly things like medical theory, science and inventing. Most would call his interests anti-social saying he prefers books to people. That's not true, he likes studying people just as much and having them think he is merely a bookworm gives him an excellent way to observe them. However there is one pastime Nicolai enjoys above even his studies. Dancing. Rumor has it that the court of Astaria has erupted into fights over who gets to dance with the graceful prince. His talent in dance transfers to a natural sort of grace in his movements that he just cannot seem to hide.

Personality:

Calm, composed and mostly practical, Nicolai can be described by all these words. He tends to have an air of serenity about him, a calm that seems unwavering....until he gets passionate or excited about something. And he is passionate, about knowledge and about the arts of music and dancing. As far as social relations go he is more reserved, some would say shy but really he just has trouble socializing with people rather than just studying them as is his habit. He is also notoriously soft hearted, eager to help where he can while still understanding that its best to give people ways to aid themselves rather than outright charity. However there is another side to this coin, he cannot stand the idea of people being oppressed by others for what they believe or want. It will bring out a fiery rage that most would not assume he even has in him.

History:

Nicolai was born as the first son, Heir, and Crown Prince of Astaria. He grew up with the best teachers and those teachers were then swapped out for new ones as the young prince learned and grew. He had a burning desire to know how things worked, mainly in relation to life and the world around him. Medicine and science were studied eagerly and then he began to dabble in making various gadgets as he learned to apply what he knew to inventing. His social skills however seemed to lack at first but slowly he began to grow more acustomed to such, though he was never truly a socialite more of an observer.

He liked to watch people, see how they worked if they had problems or woes he would try and discretely find a way to fix them with no one ever knowing he was involved. Over the years as he grew up he managed to subtly put quite a few couples together, yet he found no interest in such himself. He researched the matter extensively, wondering if he was broken but when he found nothing he resigned himself to a political marriage without feeling as he wasn't sure he was capable of feeling that way. The truth was he was always looking at ladies to figure this out and never even considered to try looking the other way. Because for all his smarts Nicolai could sometimes overlook the obvious quite well.

One exception to his lack of social ability was dancing, Nicolai took dancing lessons from an early age and even learned to play the violin. His skill on the dancefloor, the fluid grace with which he moved not only gave him peace and confidence but drew the attention of those around him as well. Yet no matter how many women vied for his attention he remained polite and calm yet strangely unaffected. Finally his father got fed up, and his son was all but ordered to attend the newly opening season in hopes of finding a partner.

Riding horseback is another interest of hers as is archery. She also enjoys having tea with her fellow ladies and gaining information from them. She has an extreme fondness for snakes which terrifies most people, to her well hidden delight. She is also extremely religious though she takes care not to worship publicly, as her family is by all rights proud of their pagan and some might say barbarian roots.

Her family rarely fights among themselves and when they do its done so quietly no one ever notices. Friends are rewarded and kept close and protected like family, because Sorcha knows the value of someone who feels indebted to her and also because she isn't stupid enough to think she can rule her lands by fear. Intimidation has a place but fear alone only inspires rebellion.

The County of Ebonwood has been a thorn in the side of the country of Vertiron for a long while now. Those that live there are rumored to be witches and pagans and while that is true its only true because whenever a pagan family is uncovered if they don't happen to die they make their way to Ebonwood where work programs have been set up for those moving in. Ebonwood is a county of open minds. Yes they are pagan and they protect their own from outsiders quite viciously.

Sorcha is the latest Countess of this suspiciously regarded family. Beautiful but some would say quite creepy as well the newly made ruler of Ebonwood stepped into power two years ago when her mother died of a fever that also took her uncle. Rumors abound that the uncle poisoned the former countess but like all Ebonwood inner struggles nothing was ever mentioned or proven.

After two years of nearly doubling the families wealth Sorcha had made the county of Ebonwood almost as rich as the entire duchy they served. She decided then it was time to branch out, to seek power to accompany that wealth. And so much to the dismay of the rest of Vertiron's nobility she decided to attend the upcoming court season.
