"Our armed nature won't tip them off, the people of Falconrest are aware of the violence of the greater area of the moors, I've seen many merchant caravan's that travel here that look more like military formations. As for being with a Golem and a Deva, I'm not saying we'll avoid all suspicion or attention but if the cult members amongst the townfolk think we are on to them as soon as we get there they'll go to ground and we'll have no leads. If they think we're merely a few odd traders then they'll try to keep a pretense of everything being normal, in the hope that we'll go our merry way and tell everyone Falconrest is nothing but a sleepy hamlet." Korick replied, " I'm not saying it's a brilliant ruse, but we need the supplies to make camp anyways and if bringing a few extra casks of salted pork and ale will help our cause then it's a worthy inconvenience. That said the people of Falconrest did strike me as a bit naive during my last visit."
Korick sat in silence as he listened to Batche's song, he could even see Beth's ears twitch and she shifted to hear it better. " Don't believe I've every heard a golem sing before," Korick mused calmly, before returning his attention to the matter at hand, " Uhm, yes, well I thought most of you would like to rest a night after your travels, but if you're eager to get going then we will leave as soon as my friend Alden brings comes with the supplies. Mostly camping supplies, Falconrest lacks an inn so we'll be making our own encampment, but also a few trade goods so that we can use the pretense of trade to keep people from getting overly suspicious about our visit."
" It's better this way, now justice has been served for those he killed and we can see if there's still hope for the people of Falconrest, we'll see to the rituals of cleansing before we depart this morning." Korick said it Lily, " I know serving justice can be a grim thing, even more so here in the wilds, but it's no less necessary. You're father'd be proud." With that Korick began searching his pack and drew forth a piece of parchment bearing a map he had drawn of the High Moors south of their position. "Settle in and let me explain the situation. To the south, it's a one days hike to Falconrest, less if we make it a hard march. It's a quite town, the like you see around here. When I visited them they seemed perfectly friendly, had no problem letting me stay in their town, they even let the kids play with Beth here, a people thoroughly without fear in the meekest way possible. A puzzle, one solved by what I saw just outside the outskirts. Fiends, protecting the town, since I sent the letters I've also seen them stop a bullette that was heading straight for the town. Despite this in my conversations the people seemed totally unaware of the fiends defending them, when I asked them about how they manage to stay so peaceful most of them believe that they the town was merely blessed. Also as far as I could tell the fiends never tried to stop me when I went in and out of town, so I believe that we will be alright if we investigate. That's the basics of the situation, what else do you need to know?"
Well time's past, as of this moment Enalais is no longer a part of his RP. Larris will become an NPC, I've given Corsair permission to dispatch him as it would make sense for the Paladin to take out the undead mass murderer now let's get on with the show.
"Children, Vis, he gave up on then, and he took away what little hope they had left," Korick declared grimly as he dropped his pipe to the ground, "There aren't many things more despicable that a man could do, don't matter the case, I don't about the odds I'd have died in battle 'fore I did that, I know a dozen Paladin's who'd do the same. It's not something I'll forgive and it's not something you should too. The man deserves death. That's the punishment for his crimes, just 'cause he was brought back doesn't mean he don't still deserve it."
At this point how ineptly Enalais has played this character is as much an issue for me as Larris's current situation. I have trouble trying to justify how he can expect the others to accept the character as he's played it. When I accepted his character I hoped he was going to have the tact to know it would require him not going overboard. Let me say it again, if he had said his character had murdered the villagers in his sheet I would not have accepted him. I've been role-playing for years, I've never seen someone so quickly make their characters go from merely tragic to practically villainous. At this point I'm considering the best thing for the RP would be kick Enalais so the rest of us can move on. I'll wait until Noon tomorrow for people to comment before I finalize my decision.
It's a pretty big part. Also it means a) he fell before he died which is a pretty major detail and b) his alignment should not have been Lawful Good. Both are details that would have made me reject the character earlier.
Sorry, but we've been doing gymnastics to make your character viable, but if he's basically Arthas, then this character is not going to work.
Korick listened and let the others pepper Larris with questions while he focused on the letter he was just handed back. It was indeed the one he had sent, bearing not only his seal but also the return seal of the enchanter. However Korick new the man wouldn't be happy with only a mundane reply when a magical alternative was available, his response would not be found in plain ink. He examined the back side of the letter that was blank and found what he was looking for, ten small dots that would have seemed random if one didn't expect to find a cypher. The dots were in the form of a constellation, Vecna's palm, which would be known to both mystics and outdoorsmen. The next part was simply recalling past correspondences and how he had activated a similar spell before. He drew forth his sharpest bodkin and used it to prick his palm gently, then squeezed his fist until a generous drop of blood landed on the page. Instead of staining it, the droplet raced across the page as if following an unseen pen tip, revealing the message the enchanter had hidden with magic. Korick studied the enchanter's message carefully by the light of the fire. It corroborated Larris's story of staying with them, he gave his opinions of Larris as a good, but troubled man seeking to hold on to his purpose. As well as his failed attempts to reverse the condition, but did mention that he believed a powerful healer could help him. And finally it described how the enchanter sent Larris hoping that if he proved himself to Korick, the ranger would see fit to help him. He took a short puff from his pipe before putting the letter away and questioning Larris. "The people of the town, the ones you killed, from what were they suffering." Korick asked, now trying to take Larris's measure as a man and not a monster.
"Answer her question Larris," Korick commanded sternly, though not yet abandoning his seat, "How did you know to come here, do not simply assume I'm willing to accept your promise of good will and over look the fact your are undead." He then rose to his feet, clenching his pipe between his teeth. Beth got up with him, standing behind him. Now that he knew the truth of Larris's condition he had to be certain he could be trusted before he would take a step further.
