"Okay, if that's settled, maybe we can move on?" Alexander spoke up, trying to move the conversation away from Magical Dream Princess weird speech pattern "Lily and I just got finished wiping out a herd of beasts, and it's clear that something similar happened here too. So it's very possible that there's even more groups of monsters roaming around. We should start sweeping the city for any remaining pockets of monsters, just to make sure." Then an idea came to him "Actually, better idea, who here has their phone? We can try to get in contact with people to see if any of them can point us in the right direction" he suggested

As Alexander got off of Lily's motorcycle, he noticed some girl he didn't know getting annoyed at the bubblegum airhead. "Look, I know her speech can be dumb and annoying, but she's ultimately harmless. And if you spend enough time in Penrose, then you'll ultimately become numb to quirks like that that are annoying but harmless. I mean, she's not likely to start some kind of magical civil war just by talking like that. Trust me, there are much worse traits in people. If baby talk helps her maintain her morale and not have a mental breakdown, I say let her." He shook his head "Anyway, yeah, what Lily said; what happened here? I can heal, so if anyone's hurt really bad I can fix them up, if you didn't already have a healer around here."

With their next destination set, Alexander got on her bike and they took off. ”H-Hey, Alex…I’m sorry."

"...Huh?" Alexander was a little surprised at the sudden apology

”For putting you in danger like that, and letting you get hurt. I mean, I’ve gotten hurt too; comes with this job and all. But I’m usually so fast I can dodge most attacks. But you’re always putting yourself out in harm’s way. Even if you can heal, I just…I don’t know, I feel guilty about it."

"Uhh..." Alexander had to fight the instinct to scratch the back of his head in confusion "You...didn't. I mean...I don't understand why you feel in any way responsible for this fight, I sure as hell don't think you are. I wasn't even that badly hurt. I've been hurt much worse in the past. And having me in the front just makes sense, since I struggle with ranged combat, and you don't" He sprouted a tail and started using it to wipe off the blood that he hadn't bothered with before "So stop being so damn serious and grim, it feels really weird coming from you."

When Lily unleashed her attack and atomized the monsters, Alexander let out a sigh of relief

”Alex, are you alright?"

"Huh?" It was then that he noticed his wound "...When did that happen?" He briefly wondered before using magic to heal himself "Alright, fine now." He then looked around the battlefield "Well it looks like that was all of them. Although..." He dropped his barriers "Why didn't anyone else get here. We didn't clear them out that fast. Yet it was just the two of us here." He started fidgeting with his weapons "Lily, I've got a bad feeling about this; it's been too quiet lately, it feels like we're about due for another big incident. Is there someone you can call the see if anything else is going on right now?"

Seeing the beast he thought he killed get back up made Alexander sigh 'Great. Either these things have some kind of regeneration, or are undead in some way. I'm not sure which is a bigger pain in the ass right now.' When Lily called for him to buy her some more time, he considered throwing up another barrier wall in front of them to completely black them off until she was ready, but the sight of a few stragglers trying (and failing) to break through the barrier from the sides made him rethink that 'That might just make them scatter, and attack it from every angle they can. Fuck, looks like I'm doing this the hard way'

He sighed as he made a few more clones and charged into the fray. Without the free access to magic that he had, his copies didn't last too long, but they were at least able to use tails to block biting attacks (and even managing to counter attack in some cases). As far as Alexander went however; between his forcefield and healing magic, the horde wasn't able to do any serious damage to him. However, there were so many of them that he never had the opening he needed to do any serious damage to any of them. So it was more or less a stalemate. Fortunately for Alexander a stalemate was good enough as far as 'stalling for time' was concerned.

The Alpha Wendigo chomped down on the arm that Alexander was using to hold his sword. Fortunately, his forcefield absorbed the brunt of it, and he countered by jamming his rod into one of the beast's eyes. It howled in pain as it let go of his arm, and Alexander tried to stab it in the heart. It jerked mostly out of the way, and he was only able to shave off a bit of one of it's sides. He was about to try again, when Lily shouted something

”They’re trying to flank us!"

That bought enough time for the Alpha to get farther away from Alexander. With his foe now out of range, Alexander fell back to Lily. Before any of the Wendigo's could rush them, he conjured three walls, one behind them, and two to the sides. He then created a few clones that stood in front of Lily with him. They all grew large thick tails out of the palms of their hands. "Alright, this should force them to come from one direction"

"Got it" Alexander responded as Lily picked up speed. Once they got close enough to the monsters, Alexander jumped off at them while throwing up a barrier to stop them. The creatures crashed against the wall and fell down, while Alexander was able to kill one with a plunging sword stab. 'Holy shit, that actually worked perfectly!' But he didn't have time to be too amazed at himself, as the beasts were already starting to get to their feet, hatred in their eyes 'Well at least they're after me now' He made a few clones to fight by his side, as tails started to grow out of all of them, ready to smack something. 'I wonder how many more I can kill before Lily get's here.' But he didn't have much time to guess, as they were starting to charge at him and his new goons.

In hindsight, it was actually kind of amazing that things had been so calm for this long.

After all the hostility and tension that built up when the magical natives of Penrose returned from their vacation after a few days to find out that months had passed, and their home had become magical Detroit, it sometimes felt like a struggle to put the pieces back together, especially when the new kid in town were crazy zealots who tried to cause trouble for some of the locals they didn't like. The magical civil war (more of a civil battle to be honest) couldn't have helped.

Then things cooled down with a Christmas party...somehow. Only to get un-cooled down by the zealots. They should be on the brink of another magical civil war...

'And yet a week later, and all we got is a pack of monsters running around. A bigger than normal one, but still just a pack. As grateful as I am, something about this doesn't feel right.' Alexander thought to himself from his place behind Lily on her motorcycle as they sped through the city streets, the boy now numb to her insane driving "Hey Lily, doesn't this feel off to you? It's been a week since the tournament, and things have been quite till this random pack of monsters. That tournament didn't really have a happy ending, and I was expecting it to make the political tension in Penrose even worse. But this...just feels tame. Like the days before the Vacation, and I can't figure out why. It's kind of got me on edge. Hell, I've had time to take a collage course on magical cooking for fucks sake. Something about this just doesn't add up"
