Nora's brow furrowed slightly as she looked at the device in the woman's hands. it looked a bit like it had been cobbled together out of spare parts and she almost opened her mouth to ask what it was for but immediately thought better of it. The woman seemed a bit unhinged, to be honest. Talking about steering and red dots. All Nora wanted to do was get to the church and help Evie deal with their mother. That was the only unhinged woman she thought she had time to deal with that day.

The woman apologized for the second time and Nora sighed a bit. "No, it's fine. Really. Just be a bit more careful, yeah?" She heard the woman comment that Nora was visiting London and she looked down at the suitcase. "Oh, yeah. For a few days. It is nice." Nora smiled a little as she looked up at the buildings. She did really miss the city life, not matter what she told herself. "I was actually born here." Why was she telling the woman that? Maybe she had one of those honest faces. Before Nora could say anything else the little device started making a bit of a racket, which excited the woman. She babbled a bit before suddenly running off without so much as a "Good day." Nora blinked a bit, shaking her head in confusion as she turned to see the woman's quickly disappearing back. "Okay then. Bye."

She was still shaking her head slightly as she moved along the sidewalk, deciding she might have better luck with cabs farther away from the station and finally stopped when she was on an emptier piece of road. She was standing one a corner watching the main road, her back to the opening of a small alleyway. She didn't sense the large man dressed in the black hooded jacket until he was right behind her. He slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her against him, his grip firm. Nora's mouth had opened when she gasped and she was about to scream but he covered her mouth and nose with a white cloth and she inhaled something that smelled too sweet. Almost immediately her mind went hazy and her struggling became weaker. It probably took less than a minute for her body to go limp and the hands that had been tugging at the arm by her face fell to her sides. Nora's brown eyes went unfocused as her eyelids drooped and soon everything went black.

The street had been empty and the only sound came from someone's barking dog behind a door. No one had seen him. The large man picked up the unconscious girl as if she weighed nothing at all and carried her back into the alleyway he had been waiting in. He secured her carefully in the back of the plain car he was driving before getting in himself and pulling out onto the street. He got on the main road and merged into traffic. The only things left on the street corner were Nora's overturned rolling suitcase and the messenger bag that had fallen from her shoulder.
I typed up the response at first, but then I forgot to copy it and I got face to face with an error page!! So I had to retype the whole post ugh never not copying my posts again.
The camp felt...homey. Sam never knew that someplace outside could feel so warm and welcoming. The tents looked lively and colorful, decorated with drawings and chimes and shells that made her smile as she observed them. There was a kitchen type area under an awning and at the center the campfire filled the clearing with warmth and light. The rugs and cushions surrounding the crackling fire looked comfortable and inviting, and though Sam was a stranger to this land and they were out in the open she felt safe for the first time. It felt a bit like home.

Florian was tying the still unconscious Marshal to a tree and Coralie was busying herself with gathering food and cooking utensils. It wasn't long before the smell of her cooking filled the air and Sam's stomach began to ache with emptiness. She hadn't realized how hungry she actually was until she had inhaled the scent of the stew and cornbread. Alphonse, meanwhile, had invited her to sit down and tell them about herself. And the story of her capture by the witch.

Sam hesitated, staring into the flames as though lost in thought. Dorothea had suggested not telling them the truth until they were at the campground and away from danger. But she was beginning to feel reservations about bringing them into this. They were so kind, rescuing her and now feeding her when she was just a stranger and Sam knew that if anything happened to them because of this mess she'd never forgive herself. Dorothea's weight left her shoulder as the cat dropped down on one of the cushions and settled down onto it. Sam saw her nod and took a breath as she wondered where to begin. She had meant it when she had told Dorothea that she thought they needed help, after all.

"My story is a bit complicated," she began as she took a seat on a rug beside Dorothea's cushion. She was still looking at the dancing flames and she let out a soft laugh. "And it's going to sound crazy, I know it is. But you have to believe me. I promise that I'm telling you the complete truth." Sam bit her lip for a moment as she gathered her words and when she spoke her voice was clear, although a bit hesitant. "The truth is that the witch doesn't know a thing about me. She doesn't know I was at her lair, she doesn't even know I'm in this land. It's because I'm not really...supposed to exist here." Sam was avoiding looking up at the faces of her audience, afraid to see the disbelief. "I told you that my kingdom is far away. Well... The witch has this mirror, you see, and it can act as a sort of doorway? Sometimes you can step through it and out of an identical mirror in another world. And that's where I'm from. Another world. One that's so, so different from this one, I cannot even begin to describe how different my world is." Sam looked down at the oversize sweater and jeans she was wearing. "That's why my clothes look so strange to you."

She had her fingers knotted together out of nerves and she compelled herself to continue to story. "I found this cat in my home. It happened only hours ago, I think. And I thought this cat belonged to one of my neighbors and decided to let her stay in my apartment til morning. Then I would try to find her proper owner. And a few hours later, right before sunrise, someone started pounding on my front door. I answered it and these three men just came in. I thought they were wearing costumes." She felt silly thinking about that now. "He was one of them." She nodded towards where the Marshal was tied securely to the tree. "And I realized that they were after the cat. But she slipped away from them and I watched her leap right through the mirror. So the Marshal and his men followed. And I guess they thought I knew too much because the Marshal had them bring me with them through the mirror. Into this world." Sam was looking down at her hands now, trying not to sound too bothered by her kidnapping. But her voice had become strained. "We managed to escape and run into the woods. But then the Jockal started hunting me and...well you know the rest of it."

Sam looked up at the three face and she smiled, a bit nervous. "I'm trapped here now. In this world. The mirrors' doorway is only open when there's a full moon in my world. And by now the sun has risen and there won't be a full moon again for another month. In my world's time at least. I don't know if it'll be the same for this world." She rested her forearms on her knees. "It doesn't seem possible, but I'm telling the truth. I swear. And if you're wondering why the witch's men were after a cat...well maybe I'm not the best person to tell you that part of the story. I can tell you that I didn't just name my cat after the princess of Eldonia, though." Sam looked down at the cat who was curled up on the cushion beside her, and her eyes pleaded for help. "Dorothea?"
Nora had been minding her own business, barely paying attention to the other people moving all around her due to the fact that her mind was focused on the little black vehicles driving up and down the street. She tried hailing an empty cab but it rolled right past her. "Oh come one!" she exclaimed, staring at the back of it like it was some sort of prank. "You have your light on an everything!" It was infuriating and she suddenly remembered all of the reasons she didn't miss this city. Although she had to admit to herself that the list of reasons she did miss it was much longer than the list of reasons she didn't.

She had been so preoccupied with the cabs that she wasn't aware of the woman who was running pell-mell right after until she felt their shoulders collide. Nora was thrust forward, her hand slipping from the handle of her wheeled suitcase so it fall to the ground, and she almost fell right into the middle of the road. She caught herself on a street lamp though, and let out a pained breath. The area where the stranger had clipped her hurt like hell.

"Oi, watch yourself, Mate!" Nora said, annoyance in her tone as she turned to look at the guy who had nearly sent her falling into oncoming traffic. But it wasn't a guy. It was a woman. She was a bit pretty with dark hair that was styled in one of those very short haircuts that Nora thought was cute, but knew if she got one she'd miss her long locks a week later. She was carrying some sort of device with a little screen and Nora's eyebrows rose a bit before she looked back into the woman's face. It had barely registered to her that the woman had been talking to herself. "Where are you off to in such a rush?" she asked as she stooped down to pick up the fallen suitcase.
Should I have Nora be the poor pedestrian?
Cassie hadn't had the faintest idea where they were going. All she did was follow Adrian and Akana down the hallways, glancing around a bit as she walked to keep an eye out for any employees or people with guns coming out of doors, and occasionally making a face whenever the rubber soles of her trainers squeaked on the smooth floor. All in all it was a very quiet and rather uneventful little walk until she felt Adrian suddenly take hold of her and push her down a hallway. It caught her off guard and she let out a little gasp as she bumped against Akana, who had pushed along with her. Then she heard the shouts.

"Adrian!" she had wanted to shout before she heard the gunfire. She saw him start to run, but her vision became obscured by Akana, who had grabbed her and pulled open a door. Cassie stumbled backwards from the rough shove the Silurian woman had given her and she all but fell into the closet. The biggest surprise she received, however, was when she collided with someone and they fell to the floor together. Cassie was lying on top of the man (she supposed it was a man though it was difficult to tell in the dimly lit room and from her confusion) and she was stationary for a moment until she heard Akana's voice.

She looked up to see the Silurian standing above her, her hood down and a gun in her hand and pointing at someone. Cassie turned her head to see who it was and saw a dark haired man with a very familiar face standing at the other end of the closet. She felt her jaw drop. "Jack?"

~~~
"Cassie?"
Jack prided himself in not being surprised easily. But so far this day had been full of surprises. First watching the thing pretending to be the Doctor impale and absorb that unlucky soldier. Watching the door burst in on Dr. Taylor and a female figure knocking him to the ground before another one joined them hadn't really phased him. This was UNIT after all. Not even the second woman's reptilian face had made him blink. But hearing a familiar voice saying his name and looking down to see Cassie Baker looking up at him from where she and Malcolm had landed on the floor had, in fact, surprised him. He had known the girl was with Adrian but he hadn't been expecting to run into her right away. He hadn't even expected for the pair to have made it this far yet, especially with a Silurian in tow.
He watched as the girl looked down at the man she had knocked over and let out a surprised noise. "Oh, Dr. Taylor I'm so sorry!" She pulled herself off of him and onto her feet before leaning down to help the doctor up.
"Um, Cassie, want to tell your friend to lower her gun?" Jack was eyeing the Silurian woman uneasily.
~~~

"Akana, it's okay! I know them," Cassie looked over at her after she had helped Dr. Taylor off of the ground. "This is Dr. Taylor. He gave us the key into this place. And that's..."

"Captain Jack Harkness," Jack said for her, smiling. "Ex-Time Agent, Ex-Torchwood operative. Still a specialist in all things alien however." He looked at the Silurian, Akana, seriously for a moment. "And we're on the same side. If you're with Cassie then you're with Adrian. We're here to help him..."

He was cut off by the sound of the explosion. It made Cassie's heart almost leap out of her chest and her eyes went wide and she spun around to look at the doorway. "Adrian." She turned back around to look at the two men, her face pale. "Adrian's out there, they were shooting at him we have to help him! They think he's some sort of planet eating monster."

"Cassie I...," Jack began, but she was continuing.

"He can't be though. He saved my life, he's agreed to negotiate a treaty between Silurians and humans. Why would a monster do that?"

"Cassie,"Jack said taking her arms, which finally made her stop talking and look up at him. "I know. I know Adrian's not the monster. I've seen the real one."

Cassie's eyebrows furrowed. "Who is it?"

"The Doctor. Or the man people this is the Doctor. The man these people are taking orders from, the ones who sent them after Adrian. I saw him kill a soldier Cassie, I saw the monster. And he's after Adrian right now."

"Why would be be after Adrian?"

"Because," Jack said slowly, "I think Adrian is actually the Doctor."

Cassie glanced between the two men. "Who is this Doctor person? Dr. Taylor mentioned him earlier and now you keep talking about him. Doctor who?"

She saw Jack smile. "The Doctor is a long story that we don't have time for right now. Come on. We need to find Adrian. It's not safe for him to be alone."

~~~
Jack lead the four of the out of the door and down the hall towards the area of the explosion. He was walking with confidence until he saw a crowd of guards and soldiers rushing into the hallway. "Turn, go! Back the other way!" But when he turned he could see more soldiers cutting them off and leveling their guns at them. Jack placed a hand on Akana's arm to keep her from raising the gun she was holding.
"Take the three humans, but kill the other one like Dr. Smith ordered."
Jack's blue eyes went steely, but before he could plant himself in front of the Silurian he saw Cassie do it first. "If you kill her you'll start a war," she said and Jack heard her voice staying completely steady despite the number of guns pointed at her head. Cassie stared at them though, pleadingly, and if she was terrified she didn't show it on her face. Jack could see her fingers shaking slightly under the sleeves of the coat that was too big for her but she continued to stand her ground. "You'll have to shoot me first."
"Oh the hell with it," the soldier in charge said, and Jack could see his hesitance about gunning down a twenty one year old human girl just to follow orders. "Just take all of them into custody! Take them to control. Dr. Smith or the Doctor should be back soon." And Jack was still as the soldiers crowded around and arrested the two unknown humans, the one unknown alien, and one of their own scientists who had been compromised before shuffling them all down the hallway.
The thing that looked like Cassidy Marie Baker but really wasn't had no trouble at all getting into UNIT. It was easy really when she could just slip through the tiniest cracks and reform on the other side. She had waited before following her master and the people blindly following him, just as instructed. She had spent some time going through the original Cassie's closet and making a bit of a mess while she did so, tossing pants and shirts she didn't exactly feel like wearing onto the floor of the bedroom. She had finally emerged wearing something from the back. Nicer clothes that Cassie owned but didn't get a chance to wear anymore. The black pants and the silky purple blouse had felt good on her skin and she slipped on a pair of black boots to complete the look.
She had looked at the image in the mirror and had smiled at her stolen face. Cassie Baker didn't have an unfortunate face and sometimes her hair wasn't too much of a nightmare. If only she were taller.
Getting to the Tower had been simple after stealing some of Cassie's hidden money and hailing a cab. She had tipped the cabbie generously because she didn't exactly care about blowing someone else's money before circling the building. She blended in well with the tourists and visitors and children on school trips. Why shouldn't she? She came across an air vent and smiled before moving closer to it. She glanced around herself quickly, to make sure she was unobserved, before she melted into the form of black goo she truly was. The goo slipped through the vent and oozed through the tiny tunnels until it found an opening and began to drip through the cracks.
The goo made a puddle on the white floor before it rose and reshaped itself into the stolen form again. The fake Cassie smoothed the blouse before looking up to see herself in a mirror and the white face of a man washing his hands at the sink. He spun around to gape at her as she smiled sweetly. "I need your gun, please." She moved forward quickly and with the strength the real Cassie didn't possess smashed his head into the mirror. He fell unconscious and she had to resist the urge to consume him. She was so hungry...but her master had told her not to kill. So instead she shoved him into a stall and took his gun and ID key card.
She paused briefly at one of the unbroken mirrors and smoothed her hair a bit. Then she turned on her heel and went out into the hallway. the fake Cassie Bake raised her head and sniffed the air, catching the scent of the man her master coveted quite easily. A smirk touched her lips as she stared forward, following the scent as she clutched the gun in her right hand and the ID pass in the other.
When Alphonse mentioned that she had named her cat after Eldonia's princess Sam made herself continue to smile casually. "That's exactly what I did, yes." She had noticed that Dorothea had remained silent and Sam decided that her not actually being a cat was Dorothea's secret to tell. She didn't want to let the cat out of the bag. Almost literally. She had to hide her smile when Florian told her about Alphonse's crush on Dorothea and at Alphonse's own response, and chanced a glance at the princess on her shoulder, biting her lip through her smile.
The smile faltered slightly when she was asked where she came from, and she looked down at her clothes when Alphonse called them peculiar. Sam supposed they didn't have denim jeans in this world and even if they did women wouldn't be wearing them. "Oh, my home is very far away from here." She wasn't sure if she should tell them exactly where she came from, as she had no idea how the people here would react to someone not from their world. Maybe they wouldn't have believed her. Or maybe it would have been worse. "My kingdom is um, in another country. It's so far away that I don't think you would have heard of it. I'm just visiting this land and I got a bit lost." There were enough almost truths to not make it a total lie.
She followed the three dwarves, stepping through the hole they had created where the front door had once been, and saw them making their way into the trees. Coralie and Florian had the Marshal held over their heads as they moved along. Sam felt impressed at their strength for a moment before hurrying after them. She's already run blindly through these woods once and that had not ended well.
Dorothea whispered into her ear and Sam's head tilted a bit to listen. Her fiance thought she had been taken by soldiers from Verinia, the kingdom Alphonse, Coralie, and Florian were from. And most likely where they were headed now. When Dorothea told her that her stepmother planned to start a war she looked over at her. "Why would she do that?" She looked back over at the dwarves who were leading the way and bit her lip in thought. "Maybe we should tell them. About who you are and the queen's plans. They obviously don't like her but they seem to like you fine. And they rescued us from her fortress when they didn't even know who we were." Sam met Dorothea's gaze and continued to whisper. "I think they could help us? Maybe take us to their capital and we could warn their king before Liam shows up? I don't think we could navigate through these woods on our own since I'm basically useless."
Nora supposed that she hadn't really needed to catch one of the earliest trains from Guildford to London that morning. The wedding and reception didn't start until late afternoon and would last well into the evening. But she was already on such a short leash with her mother for missing the rehearsal dinner the previous night that she decided getting there earlier was probably for the best. She remembered that phone call from a few days ago, when she had told her mother she had to work and could come down with Nan in time for the dinner. Irma Clarke had nearly been shrieking at her youngest child, and she had said things like "Lenore you are chief bridesmaid" or "Lenore think of how much this will hurt your sister" (Irma always called Nora by her full first name, as well as the rest of her children). There had even been a few times when she had heard her mother exclaiming "Lenore Fay Clarke," which was when she knew she was really in trouble, when Evie saved her. Bless her soul.
Evie had assured both Nora and their mother that it was all fine. She completely understood that Nora was leading a school tour and couldn't get out of it. "All that matters to me is that you're here for the ceremony," her sister had told her. Nora could hear the smile on her face when she added. "Don't worry about Mum. I'll take care of her."
But even if Evie had managed to calm their mother Nora figured the best way to ensure she was really back on her good list was to arrive as early as possible on the day of the wedding. The wedding was hours away but Irma was probably already up and panicking about some detail she must have forgot even though she probably didn't. Her father, Alec, and her brother, Sully, were probably avoiding it as much as possible, leaving Evie there to deal with it all. Maybe Nora should have come down earlier. If only to help her big sister handle their high strung, perfectionist mother.
It hadn't been a long trip, but Nora was grateful to be up and walking when the train pulled into the station and came to a stop. She was pulling a small wheeled suitcase behind her and had a messenger bag slung over her shoulder. Her free hand was stuck in the pocket of her green jacket and she was holding the elegant invitation that read that Evelyn Grace Clarke was marrying Thomas Scott Lyons. This was it. The big day. She was nervous, not because she wasn't happy for Evie. She truly was. Evie was happier than ever before, Nora had seen it on her face when her sister had come out to visit over the past several months. And she had met Tom a few times but she could tell that he was a wonderful man who adored her sister. She was more nervous for the questions. This would be her first time home in months and now that both of her older siblings had families of their own and steady careers she knew people would be asking when she was going to have a wedding and what sort of job she had now. Or asking her if she still worked in that little museum in Guildford and lived with her grandmother. And Mum would undoubtedly have a group o nice young men for her to meet and dance with.
She was only twenty three and she knew it was perfectly normal for her not to have her life together. But it was hard when everyone else seemed to.
Nora had called Evie to tell her she was in the city, and could hear muffled noises in the background. Evie whispered for her her to head over to the church quickly before Irma had a panic attack and it made her laugh as she pocketed the phone. She was still smiling when she stopped at a coffee shop in the station and bought a latte and a pastry. She had eaten some cereal that morning but she couldn't resist the smell. She munched on one end of the croissant and sipped at the hot beverage when she stepped out onto the sidewalk. London was so different from Guildford. Busier, nosier, louder. But she had to admit a part of her missed this city. Nora moved along with the crowd, her eyes scanning the street as she looked for a cab to hail. All of the vehicles outside of the station seemed to have passengers, and she pursed her lips in annoyance as she moved further along, away from the busy train station.
I knew what you mean. I adore Matt Smith and I really loved the 5th series but then everything got so so complicated eh.
