Iyl watched as her friend began his spellwork with his hand on the sealed archway while the cave rumbled and spit rocks at them. They were on a massive time constraint, but it seemed as though he would be able to pull through and open the seal much quicker than anticipated. As she watched him work, her senses picked up something strange with his energy; it seemed unstable. It was writhing.
Before the mage could really focus in on what was going on, she saw the archway crack open, and was told to go. As she was about to protest she felt his energy begin to swirl around her and push her toward the exit. With a disgruntled sigh she made her way through the opening as quickly as she could, turning back to look at him when she was free. A look of terror spread across her face as the worst thought passed through her mind. What if he didn't make it? What if she lost not only Teraem, but her best friend as well? What would she do then?
While a crisis broke out inside the woman's mind, her eyes were glued to the cavern. She felt it as Lacain's energy stretched out within the cavern in what she perceived as a final attempt to push the door open. He succeeded. Iyl watched as he nearly leapt through the cavern's opening. As his body moved just out of reach, the cavern's archway snapped shut as if it were the maw of a great beast.
Then, as if none of the events of the passed hour or so had happened, the markings that denoted the cavern's location disappeared, and Iyl felt a strange sense of peace as a foreign energy she hadn't noticed before dissipated into the air.
Before she could stop herself, Iyl rushed to the fallen mage's side, and threw her arms around his neck. As her body connected with his in her largely one-sided embrace, energy from her seemingly endless mana pool poured into him. She knew he needed it, but she was also hoping that it might help the still writhing energy that wreathed his body.
She couldn't tell what it was that was happening to him, and it worried her.
"You jerk!" Iyl's voice cracked as she whispered the words against Lacain's shoulder. When she realized she'd spoken, she also noticed that her entire body was shaking. It was all she could do to keep from crying for the second time that day.
She wouldn't burden Lacain like that. Not right now.
When he pushed himself to his feet, Iyl stayed sitting on her knees for a few moments longer, listening to him as he apologized because the spell took so much out of him with her head bowed, staring at her now folded hands. For a long time after he finished speaking, she didn't move or speak, simply sat staring at her hands.
After a few minutes of silence passed, and he asked her if she knew of a place they could go, she stood.
She did know of one place.
Without a word she gestured for him to step away from the cliff face. Once he had, her mana began to pool in her hands. Carefully, slowly, she brought her hands together as if she were saying a prayer, and a golden shock started between her two open palms until they were pressed against each other. Her eyes closed for a few moments as she pictured
the place in her mind. When she had it clearly visible behind her eyelids, she raised her closed palms above her head and then slowly parted them facing toward the cliff's base. Slowly, she began moving her open palms down and further apart. Eventually, she had made a large oval of golden energy about Lacain's height and twice his width. Knowing that it was complete, she opened her eyes, allowing the image in her head to become the image within the oval.
After a moment, a large green field was visible within the golden portal, a clear dirt road leading to what appeared to be another university. One much larger than even Teraem's. When the image was complete, Iyl stepped aside to allow Lacain through.
"Go first. I have to keep the portal open. It'll close immediately after I've passed through." She spoke calmly, her eyes not really meeting his though they were resting on his face.
Once Lacain had passed through, she followed, the portal snapping shut as soon as her body was free of it on the other side.
For a moment, she glanced at him, before starting to walk up the dirt path toward the university.
