Since we have extraterrestrials in regular contact, how does FTL stuffs work here? Nonexistent? Available only to militaries? Or available to rich people as well? Or casual interstellar travel? You see, interstellar trade requires a lot of big FTL ships.

Humans have yet to develop their own form of interstellar travel, and there are treaties in place that prevent any other race from allowing non-spacefaring societies to study their technology or purchase anything they cannot produce themselves.

@chukklehedSo nothing along the lines of, say, Superman or Hellboy or stuff like that when it comes to species/origin then? What about stuff like robot heroes who aren't part human due to being fully mechanical?

Also all of those power origin options seem to be innate, permanent powers, but what if I wanted to have a character that uses a magical device or some kind of super-science equipment for their powers? ^^; Like, say, a transforming hero or something.

While there are lifelike AI, humanoid androids are very limited in number. I suppose you could make your case for one.
As for transforming heroes, there are a number of different options. Shifters change from human form to something else, usually but not always nonhuman. Th here are also enchantments that can change a person's abilities drastically in short bursts, rather than a sustained enhancement.
Simply put, heroes on Earth have some kind of loyalty to Earth. In almost every case, that's because they were born there, to at least one human parent. Since the setting for the RP is Earth, and that probably won't change for a long time, the characters need to be terrestrial.
*grumbles good naturedly*

The world is full of wonder, particularly this world. Heroes and villains battle for supremacy while normal humans, and the occasional extraterrestrial visitors, go about their daily lives. Still, even heroes have their own lives to lead, and not every moment is a world ending crisis.

-----

This RP is supposed to run in the background for it's players, giving everyone a place to play while their other stories are running slowly. Feel free to post whenever doing whatever, and to stop posting for however long you need.

The RP will be run in one of two styles at any given time. Most of the time, it will be run freely, with everyone doing their own thing in their own little groups. During these portions, feel free to do whatever. Go to the mall, police the streets, have a sparring match, what have you.
Other times, there will be short story arcs. Things like national crises or sponsored hero events where everyone gathers in one place for the same purpose. Anyone can run one of these arcs as long as they run it past me first. During a story portion, posts should be centered on the current plot, but people can enter the scene at any time.

Generally, the RP takes place on a slightly alternate Earth. Things there are generally as advanced as things are here, with only a few nudges forward in regards to defense technology and communications. There is constant and generally well accepted contact between Earth and other worlds, with several extra-terrestrial embassies set up all over the world.

Metahumans are often as different from each other as they are from normal people, since the category encompasses any human or near human with extra-normal abilities. So far, there are several ways that a person can become a metahuman.

Genetic Mutation - The most common form of metahuman, Genetic mutations typically involve the resurfacing of an abandoned path of evolution dormant in the human genome. Once awakened, this mutation is highly likely to pass from parent to child, typically in a similar way. Many of the most prominent second generation heroes were the children of two vastly different genetic lines, resulting in a varied power set.

Alien Biology - Besides Humans, there are several fundamentally similar, but genetically diverse, forms of life in the universe capable of breeding with humanity. Generally, children of mixed heritage carry the features of both parents, and are more likely to awaken to abilities which are unique, even among metahumans.

Magic - For those without a genetic advantage, power can be acquired through dedicated study and practice. Living creatures constantly radiate energy as they pass through the world, and mages can collect that residual power and turn it to their own ends. Few are able to master the ether to the degree it takes to stand toe to toe with heroes, but there are always exceptions.

Unique places:
There are a number of extraordinary cities and locations in the world, thanks to superhumans. Almost everywhere has it's own special flavor, but the following places stand out for various reasons.

Phillidalphia - this city has no Supervillains whatsoever, and the lowest non-super crime rate in the country. This is thanks to its resident super hero team, who are about as ruthless on criminals as the law allows. They are famous for finding lawful ways to torment lawbreakers, so any criminals with sense avoid the city.

Seattle - this city operates on an entirely different set of rules from the rest of the world. Here, the relationship between heroes and villains is cordial, almost friendly, thanks to a set of treaties set in place by the mysterious over boss of the supervillains. Under these treaties, no superhuman may harm another in a "personal" way, such as targeting their familly or friends, or interfering with their non-super life. Likewise, Villains are "encouraged" to keep innocent casualties to a minimum. Breaking the rules is met with a quick response from both sides, and often results in death.

Rules:
1. I'm pretty lax about things, but if I tell you not to do something, don't do it. If you can convince me otherwise, fine, but it's not better to ask forgiveness than permission.
2. Obviously, general RPG rules apply here. Don't play another player's character, don't spam, don't etc. The only difference is that because not everyone will be playing all the time, feel free to have a back and forth with someone as long as you like. Also time is relative to a specific interaction here. As long as they don't combine at some point, two people can be having lunch at a cafe at noon while two others can be enjoying a late nigh sparring match.

that's a couple of people

Alright, I'll start working on the OOC now. Until I finish that, here's a CS to keep you busy.

For now I'll let everyone choose a few related primary powers. Nothing crazy, but have fun with it.

for now I want to keep things simple, since this is still an experiment, but if it works for a while I'll let people start making extra characters.
Right, well it's taking a little longer to get to sleep, so I'll leave you with a little of the world to mull over.

this is gathering interest a lot faster than I expected it to...

Alright, I'm going to bed for now, but when I wake up I'll share some of the world, put together a CS, and start working on the actual thread.
