The Black Mesa Research facility:
Located in the New Mexico desert, is a high security level science facility funded by the U.S. government. Built over several decommissioned ICBM launching and testing silo complexes probably constructed during the 1950s, which was converted into a vast civilian institute for the research of almost every conceivable scientific discipline. Black Mesa undertakes its various scientific researches in the facility, which is a very high-security complex, as each employee is required to undergo a series of rigorous security checks to access most areas. Security guards, carrying firearms and trained for emergencies, are present everywhere. The complex is also equipped with retinal scanners and alarms, as well as heavy blast doors that may shut down in case of fire, explosion or other event. Black Mesa can be completely sealed from the outside.
On May 16, 200x
An experiment gone wrong caused the Resonance Cascade, which allowed numerous extraterrestrial creatures to teleport into the facility and wreak havoc upon its personnel. The creatures attacked on sight killing many in the first few hours of the cascade. Within six hours the military had been dispatched to secure the facility and “silence” the witnesses. When the military was eventually beaten back by the aliens and Gordon Freemans attacks; black operators entered the facility to mop up any remaining witnesses, then arming a 14 kiloton nuclear device, shut the facility down once and for all.
Some time before the Black Mesa Incident, researchers at Black Mesa discover the alien "border world" known as Xen while developing teleportation technology.[4] Science expeditions performed by "Survey Teams" are secretly launched to collect data from Xen, using a huge teleporter deep within the top-secret Sector F Lambda Complex.[4] Despite the deaths of dozens of researchers, Xen inhabitants and wildlife are brought back to Earth for study in the Sector E Biodome Complex. Soon, members of the Xen Survey Teams recover several Xen crystals from the borderworld, which are designated to be studied in Sector C's Anti-Mass Spectrometer.

As a civilian you have a typical 9-5 job. You work with computers, or answer phones. Scientists run experiments, can be granted higher security clearance depending the research they are involved in. Engineers work in R&D always improving tech, or backwards engineering it.[/spoiler]

Security Guards are responsible for the general safety and welfare of the facility and its employees. Guards are equipped with vests, helmets, and either .9mm Glock 23, or a .357 S&W revolver(usually for lieutenants and above.) Security Clearence is based off of post location.

HECU(Hazardous Enviromental Combat Unit) Marine: PFC(Private First Class, E1)-Colonel(0-6)

HECU is a special forces unit designed to deal with containment breaches in areas where the flora or fauna can be hostile. HECU man power reserve stands at the level of an Fleet Marine Force line battalion(roughly 1500 men)-along with its assets, Tanks, rotary wing, and fixed wing, artillery. Their mission is to secure the Black Mesa Facility eliminate all hostile extraterrestrial life forms and permanently silence any and all witnesses.
