Sheffield

“Come with me. We need to secure the area and make sure whatever got him, isn’t still around.” Her voice was firm but not completely commanding. Lyra looked to Sheffield with her golden eyes, signalling that she was talking to him.

"Al... Alright."

That was all Sheffield said to the woman with ruined makeup. His glove was slightly slick with the injured man's blood, but he started wiping that off with some rags from one of his little bags on his waist.

He went outside as he did, glancing back to see if the woman was going to follow, but he had a good feeling she would. Having had an incredibly impassive friend for years, he learned to see and sense at least a few subtleties in those kind of troubled people. Although he could tell there was not one living danger at the moment, at least not one within feet of the tavern, he kept his mouth shut for the woman's sake.

The young man walked outside and set his satchel down. He put away the rags and started checking himself more thoroughly. His padded armor was too worn for any more quests, but it should be good for something static like guard duty. His helmet was surprisingly unscathed, but he took that off to check for scratches.

A mop of hair fell down little past the nape of Sheffield's neck. It was an oaken brown, similar to his lighter brown eyes, but fading to the tips was a burning red. It stood out particularly against the light coming from the tavern, though one side of it was matted in dried blood. Sheffield touched that part and decided he can deal with it at a bathhouse. Assuming there was a place like that.

He glanced back at the white-haired woman again to see if she was doing fine, then checked on his helmet, later crouching and looking into his satchel. It was more of large backpack, meant to lay flat against one's back as much as possible. He thought for a moment, looked around, at the roof of the tavern, then at the woman.

"Has it been a bad night for you?" he asked. It probably sounded dumb, but he was still wondering about the mood before.

Sheffield was amongst the first to react. He seized an arm and shoulder first--heavy! He registered the weight he alone would have had to carry, had one hand thrusted into his satchel for a bandage, or anything to stem the bleeding for now, then looked around for help. They needed more people for a safer pass onto the table.

Any poison? Disease? Where is the doctor lady? The wolf that might bite if anyone got too close? The young Hunter gave the wolf a breif glance. Where was the girl? Who was this man? Sheffield tried to process these thoughts as he scanned for any more injuries that could open if the man was moved.

Sheffield became more painfully aware of how he looked at the moment. He can understand how skeptical they felt when they saw a young Hunter, all youthful and hurried. They probably thought he was just another novice getting unlucky from inexperience. And frying pans? They were cooking tools. And Sheffield’s other weapons and tools were hidden in his satchel, with a rifle tied up and covered in cloth.

It also didn’t help that the wolf Sheffield saw was not far from where he was. He kept on staying aware it wasn’t normal at least. Maybe the serving girl had something to do with it, but for now he had to put them out of his mind.

The giant of a man had looked away not even a minute after. He had been distracted by the sniffing person too. Sheffield let out a sound of protest, but it was drowned out by other patrons making their own notes and arguments. A woman had edged into the earlier conversation though.

“I don’t think chimeras have anything to do with the attack on Goldencrest. --If that’s what you are talking about.-- But, it was too... Intelligent. The attack. Everything burned and with the priest hung up like.. How.. he was. It seems whoever did this is more mocking than anything else. Demons, maybe. Like how --”

She blinked for a moment before gesturing to Bartolomeo.

“-- he mentioned. Witches maybe? But, a part of me even thinks it might be people. Just regular ones with some kind of vengeance up their sleeves. Though that thought makes me sick to my stomach.”

While she babbled slightly, Lyra tried to keep her words concise.

Sheffield blinked. The Hunter with the tear-stained makeup was sad alright. ”Did you lose someone during this attack?” he asked with care. ”Sorry if it’s personal but I don’t know anything about what happened here. Could you explain? Make it short if you want.”

The young Hunter was taking off his armor when he heard the incredibly tall man ask the question. Wasn’t there a... thing? The one that ate the werewolf? It didn’t feel like any monster he had seen before, now that he thought about it. All mixed energies...

Without thinking, the young man raised an uncovered hand, one riddled with bruises and dried blood. He gave it a quick glance and found no bleeding injuries. He winced when people found their attention drawn to his arm though, and then the dented frying pans on one hip, but he had to say.

”I’m Sheffield,” he shouted, then spoke softly. ”Sheffield Duster, Hunter. I don’t know what’s going on—I just arrived minutes ago—but I saw something like it in the woods earlier before I walked on the main road to this town. I didn’t take a closer look at it, but I could’ve sworn it was a human with scales. Like a snake, I think.

”I was being chased by a couple of zombies, ghosts, and a werewolf; I took the former two groups out and was about to finish off the walking wolf when something rushed into it. I just took my chance to get out of there.”

Sheffield felt that reporting like this should have made him tremble a little at the memory, but now it was like... normal. Especially so, given his ‘misfortune’. Was this really how most Hunters got used to it? Blood and guts and survival every day?

But it was out now. He let his hand down, trying not to stare back at all those who did.

A young Hunter breathed.

Not as fast as he had a few hours ago. The ghosts were driven off with his iron pan, the zombies put back into the ground without their heads this time, and the werewolf probably being savaged by a very hungry were-something. Whatever it was probably came from... somewhere nearby. Some place where he could feel a sort of invisible current, the first of which he felt days ago on the road.

The Hunter tried to breathe slower. He coughed. He was breathing normally now, with the ache of days behind him weighing down his body. Every step was hard, but he saw a town--with lights this time!--in the distance.

The young man finally sat down as soon as he reached a fountain in the town. It was only then he noticed the looks everyone directed at him.

He looked down. His armor and metal plating was torn. He stank of the forest, sweat and blood. He probably looked bad.

"Ma, there's a Hunter that looks like a zombie!"

"Come here dear, you don't want to go near him now..."

The young man concluded he had to find somewhere to stay first. Except he had no idea where he wandered into this time, so making use of his travel experience, he raised a hand to ask a nearby townsman and asked--

"No please wait! I'm a Hunter and I won't hurt you! I just want to ask for a good inn and any shops catering to Hunters."

The townsman thankfully stopped to tell him. "Oh. Sorry, er, that way. The tavern's called the Witches' Paradise, and the owner's name is Bobby, a retired Hunter. He might help you better than I could. Shops are that way."

"Thank you kindly. Ah, and what's the name of this place?"

The man eyed him critically. "Are you really a Hunter? It's Seren's Folly! This town is a right spot for Hunters far and wide."

A sour feeling suddenly filled the Hunter's stomach. "And... populated with Witches too?"

"Hunting for them then? Well, you'd have to go into the forests this way though. Young, reckless ones like you though..."

The man pointed to the right with a finger. The Hunter followed it and saw trees, tall and dark in the night. While that was nothing out of the ordinary, the sight gave him more than just a chill down his back.

"I don't need to ask why," he decided.

The young Hunter bade the man goodbye as they walked off. Seren's Folly... he was only told that a girl with the Wonder Painter's face was around this region, but here? He heard the stories.

It was just a short trip from the fountain to the Witches' Paradise. He saw a group of people dressed for battle, chuckling in a rather muted agreement as their blades and bags swayed from their hips.

The young man walked right in and stood there for a moment. Warm air, but quiet chatter assailed him. This place was popular for some reason.

He looked around. The host was serving table, probably Bobby, sounds like the right man to look for as a Hunter, but he seemed busy talking to a few patrons. He scanned again. There were other patrons too. Maybe he could ask them?

Well, he should probably do something about his padded armor first.

Well this thread is the one that drew me into this forum. I’m a little squeamish about what R-18 might mean, but I can handle this. So, are there still open spots for a character or two? Also, am I allowed to include a character that is neither Hunter nor Witch? If not, can I sort of make such a character a special case attached to my character?
Call me Cryptek. Or Cry. Not that I cry a lot.
Let’s see... I am aiming to be a writer for stories, mostly fictional, which has translated to my experience in roleplay on Discord, small fan fictions that I never really finished, and constant seeking for a place to practice such a craft. I prefer fantasy, but I’m open to a couple of other genres (with horror not being the first I’d pick).
At the moment I found a casual thread about hunters and witches I’m planning on joining, though I may be late for sign-ups. Either way, it was how I was attracted to joining this website, so I hope to have fun. Please treat me well here!
