Still stuck in this strange position on the fire escape, Lawrence had to hold on tighter to the metal bar, as his hands began to hurt from holding on for so long. He wished he could just continue to the top of the fire escape and explain to the man, face to face, that he was not dangerous but he knew coming any closer to him could do more harm than good.

"A few weeks now. I was moving here from Canada when everything happened."
@OnlyThePie Huh, yeah, I didn't notice that until now. Although I'm not sure if funny is the right word to use haha.

Joseph Reed

The brisk early November air nipped at Joseph's nose as he walked the perimeter of the farm. With his hands stuffed in his jacket pockets and his weathered boots shuffling along the muddy ground, his mind was lost in the clouds. Grey weather like this always made Joseph miss his family terribly. With it being Sunday, the farmhand's day off, Joseph thought it best to isolate himself for a little bit. A nice slow walk ought to do it. The men had a game of baseball going and Joseph was usually one to participate but his mood didn't match the occasion and he had let the men know that he'd be around after his walk. The light drizzle collected on Joseph's chestnut hair, eventually causing the hair to stick together in small clumps on his head. He didn't mind, his hair was dirty anyway. He planned to take a bath that night.

Joseph's walk around the perimeter of the farm was coming to an end as the sound of the men chattering came into earshot. As he neared closer, he caught bits and pieces of the conversation. As it appeared, Bill had hit the ball out in the wooded area and Henry and Yulian had gone to fetch it. Joseph decided that he had had enough time to himself for the day. At times, usually due to the weather or a remark made by another farmhand, Joseph would find himself stuck reminiscing about his family, unable to pull himself from the miserable slump. Having both his wife and son taken from him only 7 years prior, the wounds had yet to heal. Seven years sounded like a proficient time to get over a loss but it seemed to Joseph that the wrenching feeling of being without his wife and son only worsened with each year. Each month that went by only seemed to deepen his feelings of grief and lonesome. He had never longed for anything as desperately as he longed for the touch of his wife or the laugher of his son. On most days, he would do his best to push those feelings of longing and ever occurring memories away and focus on the work he was tasked with that day. However, every now and again, he had to give into them. He had to feel sorry for himself sometimes. Today was one of those times.

Waiting around with the other men while the two men fetched the ball, Joseph surveyed his clothing and tried to decide if anything needed patching yet. It had been a while since he mended any of his clothes. His thoughts were interrupted when a commotion arose with the arrival of the men who had gone to look for the baseball. He looked up to see Henry and Yulian pace toward the group of men, a bloodied Clay on Yulian's shoulder. The two men appeared greatly disturbed and the sight of Clay bloodied and seemingly unconscious was alarming. It wasn't until the men reached the rest of the farmhands that they learned that some crazy madman had killed Clay in cold blood. The prospect that there were people like that made Joseph's stomach spin. The Tuckett Farm had always been a safe place. It was hard to believe that cold blooded murder took place just outside the boundaries of the farm.

Now in a worried state, Joseph followed the farmer's orders and returned to the barn. He was among the men who had gathered around the radio in attempt to learn anything about what sounded like "The Red Plague". At least that's what it sounded like the voice on the radio said. While he was growing more concerned with every moment, his face remained stoic as he took all this new information in. Once he had heard enough from the radio, he took a step back from it to allow other farmhands to hear it better. Wringing his hands, he collapsed onto his bunk and let it all sink in. "Jesus," the man muttered to himself.
Name: Joseph Reed

Age: 38

Appearance: Joseph is a tall man with a strong build although he is not bulky or cumbersome. Standing at 6’4 and weighing in at 210 lbs, Joseph is a very strong man and his body is rather muscular and worked as each day he endures hard physical labour on the farm. His face is diamond shaped with moderately placed cheekbones and a moderately shaped nose. His lips are on thin side but his eyes are the most noticeable feature on his face. They are a hazel colour, although containing more green than brown. Joseph has a full head of hair that is cut somewhat short but not like a buzzcut. There’s some waviness to it. (Picture Joel from The Last of Us). Joseph’s hair isn’t exactly black but it is a dark chestnut brown. His beard is short and and does not extend off of his face for the most part. (Picture Rhett from Good Mythical Morning) and is the same colour as the hair on his head. Joseph has a scar line on his lower cheek which his beard grows around. He is not thin necessarily, he has some weight to him. Although, a lot of it is muscle.

Personality: Joseph can be described as a rather reserved and calm man. He is a man of few words and picks his battles. However, as a result of this, he finds that he gets little say in group settings and is ordered around by the other members. He could be best described as passive aggressive and gentle. Come the outbreak, he will be forced to resort to violence which will disturb him greatly. Joseph is a man who is in touch with his thoughts and likes to write them down on paper. He prefers to work things out rather than use violence straight off the bat. Soon, he will scare himself by his increased aggressiveness when the undead rise. Nonetheless, Joseph is still a gentle giant, and he will do whatever he can to keep his sanity.

History: Joseph Reed was the only son born in the city to an English professor and a housewife. It was assumed that he would follow in his father’s footsteps and enter the same profession. Through his early schooling and life, he received much pressure and bitterness from his father. He was not a warm or kind man in any sense of the word, but that didn’t stop Joseph from using his money to go to university. While he was in university, he was drafted but did not pass physical examination due to being flat footed. One year into his studies, he met a farm girl named Margaret through a local dance. The two fell madly in love and within a year, Joseph dropped out of university to marry her. The two moved into Margaret’s family farm and took it over when her parents died. She was the eldest of her two siblings and her parents entrusted that she and Joseph would do them proud. For the years that they ran the farm together, Margaret taught Joseph everything she knew about farming. The couple went on to have a son named Tom. When Joseph was 31 (1927), an unfortunate string of events took place which led to a barn fire that killed both his wife and son. Unable to live alone at the farm with the establishment reminding him only of the family he lost, Joseph sold the farm in 1928, before the markets crashed. He used the money to move back to the city and continue his schooling. When the depression hit, he dropped out of school again to look for work. With his previous experience in farm work, he was hired at Tackett Farmstead in 1931.

As soon as Lawrence heard a voice come from the apartment he was preparing to climb into, he froze on the spot. Almost all the way up the fire escape with his axe in his hand, he panted heavily as he decided what to do. Going down wasn't an option but, as it seemed, going up wasn't one either. He couldn't just stay there on the ladder, he had to do something. He had no doubt that whoever was at the top had a weapon on them and was prepared to use it on him. Lawrence had no choice but to resort to complete honesty.

"Uh,..." he started, "I don't mean to hurt you. My truck is just broken down and I'm looking for some stuff to fix it." Seeing as Lawrence actually couldn't see who he was talking to, this was a rather bizarre conversation.

Very interesting concept. I will definitely have a sheet up by tonight if it's not too late to join.
With the option too good to dismiss, Lawrence forced himself to take the chance and climb up the fire escape. Although his ascension was not as graceful nor silent as he would have liked. His axe was rather bulky and he had no place to mount it while he climbed. The metal of the axe clanged against the fire escape, making Lawrence cringe every time. He knew the undead were drawn to noise like flies to horse shit. But there were others that were alarmed by noise: humans.

Lawrence's previous encounters with other humans over the last few days had been less than pleasant. All of a sudden, everyone assumed that you had harmful intentions and took it upon themselves to hold you at gun point until you proved them wrong. The area seemed pretty deserted so Lawrence had his fingers crossed that no one would be in the apartment when he finally got up to it.
IC is up! All accepted characters are encouraged to proceed to post in the IC. Let's get this thing started!

As for the state, Huntington is a fictional state in north west America that I had created for a novel about a year or so back. Picture it near the Washington and Montana area.
