Exactly. The holiest of holies. Or so they believe.
Magic would follow typical fantasy settings yes. So magical schools would come into play but you aren’t limited to delving into one school. It just depends on how you wanted to build and present your character. You could make your paladin/knight work well with great swords or axes but also know some healing/protection magic. Light based magic to banish darkness and things of that nature. Completely up to you!
But yes for healing and divine I would say that stick to the Holy/White magic school field. Conjugation or Biothaumaturgy.
I was envisioning a mixture of both gothic and oriental to be honest. Oriental design for small structures and the walls of the city but gotcha architecture for the large buildings inside the walls. It’s really up to whatever you are feeling. Though I would say it leans more towards Gothic.
Naming schemes would differ from each location yes but these would stem from generic fantasy names. But given this, it’s more likely for people born and raised in the Strand of the Stands to have more short and pronounced names. While people from Linmark may have longer names as well as emphasis on titles.
Elthari and the Holy Kingdom are no different from each other in terms of names and titles. But in Elthari it is still a mixing pot since so many cultures come together there.
Glad to hear it! The OOC/IC is up in the advanced section if you want to move over there and give it a look!
Hmm... well that really depends on the player’s idea. Wild side I was thinking would be fantasy races not usually part of the big three. Or perhaps a human that might be struck with lycanthropy. I mainly just said the wild side bit to try and spark some creativity as I love seeing all the interesting characters players come up with.
@DontCallMeZelda Duly noted, thanks! Here's a couple of follow-up questions, though. What are the main religion(s) in the four countries? Do all of the countries abhor demons? Do any of them view the Seraph as a sort of savior?
Ah thank you for reminding me. For some reason I thought I had updated that in the Location bios when I moved this to the OOC thread. Most locations in the four countries worship the Mother-Goddess. That being the standard religion, it isn't forced upon the people though. Most who do not exactly believe in her intervention will recognize that she exists and she is a Mother-Goddess of the world of Ruyunae. Like the people of the Holy Kingdom worship her as their main religion.
But the people of Sweym Sma focus their worship on a set of twin warrior gods they believe helped found their roots in the desert region. The people of Linmark almost seem uninterested in the Mother-Goddess and instead seem council and teachings from a god they call "The Wise Man". Given this is a very high fantasy setting god/goddess intervention and speaking with mortals is not common but not unheard of. That leaves the people of Elthari, and they aptly worship gods of the Sea. Since their land lost its main connection to the main continent of Ruyunae decades ago their religions have changed as well. The people worship a sect of three gods that each deal with parts of the sea/weather.
Unanimously yes all the major cities abhor demons. Now that is just the major cities, there are plenty of small villages and towns we will encounter where that may not be the case. We are going to encounter Demons which are like the "smart ones" so to speak, and then Monsters which are more abundant and act on basic impulses. Kill to eat, protection that sort of thing.
Interestingly enough I didn't think anyone would ask that last question. I'll speak plainly, that will change over the course of the RP and I wanted it to be that way given how we interact with each other as a party. But lets say from a standpoint before the RP starts this is the opinion of the Seraph from each hold: Holy Kingdom: Adores the Legend of the Seraph and firmly believes there will be another to come to stop some unforeseen cataclysm in the future. They have believed in this ever since the Seraph of old walked the land. Elthari: Believes in the Seraph but maintains a neutral stance towards them at the moment. Elthari is a big tourist attraction so it is a bit different given how much of a mixing pot of culture it has become. Sweym Sma: The people recognize the legend of the Seraph but many believe them to be an ill omen. A hero that only shows up when a great evil appears? That would mean the arrival of a Seraph means potential destruction. So the people of Sweym Sma have focused on strengthening themselves ever since that fateful day the Seraph of old sacrificed himself. However, they do not judge others that do believe in the Legend or not share their belief. Linmark: The higher ups in the society have too many questions about the legend of the Seraph to firmly say they will place all their faith in one singular person and a band of heroes. A sect of them have been fervently studying the legend of the old Seraph and the great evil that plagued the land long ago and they have discovered a great number of secrets, but they have not disclosed these secrets to anyone but themselves. The regular citizens create dissonance to a degree as the harsh colds and bandit attacks make them ready for a band of heroes to come to their aid.
So I would say the only major city that truly views the Seraph and the band of heroes that accompany them as Heroes would be the Holy Kingdom.
Glad to see that this is up. A couple questions, though.
Firstly, how much experience would you prefer our characters to have under their belts? Completely inexperienced people who need to be taught how to fight? Neophytes with much to learn? Experienced adventurers with a few more tricks than normal? Masters of the art of combat? I'm personally leaning towards the second or third, but could feasibly go for any of them.
Secondly, what does the technology level look like, currently? Do bombs and firearms exist? Which nation is the most advanced when it comes to technology? Do airships exist?
Lastly, should we each be from different nations? I can see merits in everyone being from different places.
Wonderful questions as always. For the first question: That is entirely up to you! My character will be more on the “not so experienced, but he can definitely hold his own in a fight” side. Room to grow! If you want your character to follow that same pattern that’s great! We can grow together. If not, having a master of combat in some field would prove invaluable for the party I think! We could all learn from someone who is an expert in their field.
For the second question the technology would not be too terribly advanced. Bombs and fire arms do exist but they would not be too terribly common. Armies still mainly employ ballistic forces and tried and true cavalry army units. Along side siege weaponry. However, given this is high fantasy you may use your imagination a bit. More details about this would come as we progress with the technology advancement being closely attuned to magic. The most advanced major city is Linmark the city in the snow. Mainly due to their connection to magic. Flying contraptions do exist but they are few and far between.
Third question: Depends on what players we get really! While being from different parts of the world would be interesting I’m definitely not going to force it. We will meet a colorful cast of npcs along the way from all four corners and more as well.
Are you awake? Can you hear me? Please listen well.
The flow of time has led to this. A battle between the force of light and the force of darkness. A Hero’s Tale that will be told to young children to fill their hearts with joy and inspiration for ages to come. A tale of bravery and hardships and how to overcome any obstacle thrown your way. This tale would turn out to be quite similar to the old legend…
Darkness is coming. A new threat to Ruyunae is ready to strike. Will we be ready? Who will be there to rise to the call? Are there even any Heroes left in this peaceful land? We have not had such an immense threat since the age of old so surely not.
This is your story. How you choose to write it and how it will unfold is up to you. I am merely an orator, prepared to weave your life’s story into the fabric of ages. Every story needs a beginning. Forgive my laughter, but I would hope you would agree. You cannot skip to end for if you do you miss the best part. Besides, who doesn’t love a good hero’s tale anyway?
You have been chosen by the Mother-Goddess. The land you call home is in danger and you must rise to action. You will not be alone though. Just as the Seraph of old had his band of allies, you will have yours. Close companies whom you would not trade the world for. This is where the power of stories comes into play. When you meet your friends how will the friendships grow? How will things progress when you yourselves find the new Seraph?
Ah yes, the Seraph. A mortal child blessed with the power of the Mother-Goddess. Powerless on their own but together with invaluable allies the Seraph shines. It is said the Seraph can awaken sleeping powers inside those who call him a companion. It is by this rite that the Seraph of old was able to save the land of Ruyunae. Or had you forgotten that detail? No matter, I do so love telling stories.
Long ago the land of Ruyunae was much different that you know it to be now. There were five kingdoms instead of four. You know the land the fifth Kingdom rested as the Land Betrayed. You know the old Kingdom’s name as Aucrun. This Kingdom was brought to its knees one fateful day when the trusted advisor to the King murdered him in cold blood. He did not take the throne, nor did he seek to rule the land but instead he unleashed and unspeakable evil upon the Kingdom. Only a handful managed to escape while the rest had their bodies consumed by the demonic beast known as Mal’Goxon. Mal’Goxon needed to recover his strength.
The cataclysm at Aucrun sent shockwaves throughout the world. The other kingdoms closed their gates to each other and relations between them dwindled. All hope seemed lost as many simply waited for their inevitable destruction. But the Mother-Goddess had other plans for her people. She blessed a young man with her infantile powers. She named him the Seraph and spoke directly to him. His powers were weak and he did not feel he could accomplish such an impossible task. However, the power of the Seraph truly shines in the hearts of those close to the one who bears its mark. The Seraph was able to band together an inseparable camaraderie and they ventured across the land of Ruyunae to gain supports from all of the kingdoms. All of the Kingdoms needed the help of the Seraph and his allies and the Seraph needed age old relics held by the Kings and Rulers. Through many trials and tribulations the Seraph and his band of friends gathered what they needed and made their preparations to vanquish the demonic evil. Some say they charged in too fast and did not prepare themselves, but the Seraph believed they were ready. He and his allies stopped in the Holy Kingdom before they ventured out on the following morning.
In the ghastly rebuild ruins of Aucrun meant to be the Demon’s new kingdom, the Seraph and his allies fought. The battle raged on but as light pierces the darkness the Seraph and his friends prevailed. In the short aftermath of the battle the Seraph and his allies dropped their guard. Light may pierce the darkness but light cannot extinguish every inch of darkness. The demon mustered all of his strength for one final attack even if it meant killing himself. The Seraph thought to do the same. He enveloped his close allies in soft veils of light and sent them back to the Holy Kingdom before he used the last of his strength and the power of the Seraph to minimize the destruction of the blast by the Demon. The blast was immense. The rebuilt, ruined kingdom of Aucrun was utterly destroyed once again and blistering waves of malice and fire scorched the earth near the old Kingdom. If the Seraph had not done what he did then the destruction caused by the demon would have been one hundred fold, or so they say. The Seraph died a hero’s death and his allies overcome with grief disbanded. The Holy Kingdom marked the day after his event for a great festival in celebration of the Seraph and his allies. The Festival of the Lights was born and has been held every 100 years ever since.
Future Heroes, It has been ages since the day spoken of in the Legend of the Seraph. The ruins of Aucrun are not off limits but the land is known as the Land Betrayed and most steer clear of the place. This makes it the perfect place for the villain of your story to reside. There it waits, gathering its strength. Its power born out of hatred towards the Mother-Goddess and pure malice and darkness. This evil has amassed a large following and they are sustained by its dark magic. The nearest Festival of the Lights is fast approaching and this dark organization is planning to strike. They plan to strike on the holiest of days when all of Ruyunae meets in the great Holy Kingdom of Khrousahvell. You must be ready. Your beloved world is about to change drastically and I want you to be as prepared as you can. I apologize for not having enough time but the Mother-Goddess has chosen you for a reason. You must be the light to shine in the darkness. The hope in the people’s eyes. You must find the Seraph and awaken to your true potential. The Mother-Goddess will reveal more to you when you meet on the day of the Festival of Lights. Please, you must prepare yourself. I am sorry it has to be you… for you may not wish to get involved. You may voice your frustration in due time but being chosen by the Mother-Goddess cannot be a bad thing, no? Now go! Wake up and make haste. The Festival of the Lights is set to begin. You must find the new Seraph. He needs you. The Land of Ruyunae
A short Summary
The Land of Ruyunae is a large land mass almost split in the middle thanks to the destruction caused by the demon of old in Aucrun, the Land Betrayed. The continent is still whole, but the center is a large zone deemed unholy so the people do not venture there. Ruyunae has four major kingdoms that influence the land:
1.) The Last Strand of the Sands: Sweym Sma (Sweeyum- Suma)
Sweym Sma is a blisteringly hot desert region. The people who live there are unnaturally strong willed and have almost un-mortal like tolerance to the Sun’s scorching rays. The Major city is like an oasis among the brown and golden sands. Pearly white cobblestone walls adorned with teal drapes and banners along the heavily fortified outside walls. Large statues of their religious symbols adorn the inside and the outside as well. Rivers of cool water pool into many parts of the city through gorgeous arching aqueducts. The Palace of the Heir stands as the largest building in the city and is where the Heir herself calls home. It is where she rules from. Sweym Sma is famous for its glass sculptures and starry skies. There also rests an ancient set of ruins far to the west in the middle of the Sma Desert that no scholars can decipher.
Religion/Opinion of the Seraph:The people recognize the legend of the Seraph but many believe them to be an ill omen. - Notable Locations/Places of Interest - The Sun's Crucible: A small circular battleground up and coming warriors train under to hone their skills and hopefully one day pass their masters to become blades themselves.
Wind's Call: A glorious horse race track with a beautiful river located just behind it. The stands are set up so one can gaze upon the beauty of the desert dunes and the river as well as the races going on. The Wind's Call has been known the attract nobility of all the Major Cities in Ruyunae whenever they hold their annual Great Race.
2.) The Empire of Snow: Linmark (Lyn-Mahrk)
Ah the Empire of Snow. A glorious Empire built right out of a fairy tale book. The left most side of the Empire is guarded by a large teal blue iceberg and the right most part of the city is guarded by one of their tallest mountains. Behind the city rests an open alcove to the ocean where the Emperor’s ships dock. The city does not try to stand out from the snow. White stone and dark brick walkways shine among the cloudy skies. Most of the talker more prominent buildings of Linmark have a slightly gothic design to them. While most of the other parts of the city such as smaller buildings and the main walls have an oriental design. The city is famous for its runic scripture along the floor of a statue of their first Emperor though none know what it says. Linmark is also famous for its drinks, fur coats and leather as well as a steady supply of Iron and Steel. Off to the East of the city rests a large structure that has only recently sprung up. What could this building be? Religion/Opinion of the Seraph: Linmark: The higher ups in the society have too many questions about the legend of the Seraph to firmly say they will place all their faith in one singular person and a band of heroes. The large structure that appeared near the snowy mountains of the city have caused worry among the general public as well.
- Notable Locations/Places of Interest - The Library of Ages: The only Library in all of Ruyunae where if you have questions you can find answers. That is what has been said but knowledge always has a price and more carefully guarded secrets are kept under lock and key. This four story library rest near the Emperor's Castle and is connected to it. The emperor himself has been known to frequent the library for a good read. The DeadFrost Mines: Mines only the most hardened workers find work in. It serves as their main source of rare metals and exportable steel and iron but monsters plague this great mine. It is always kept locked and those that venture in for work never exactly know if they will come back to turn a profit.
3.) The Holy Kingdom: Khrousahvell (Curoo-Saahh-Vvhell)
The Holy Kingdom. Said to be where the Mother-Goddess blessed the first Seraph and where he began his quest. The city prides itself on its knights and militaristic force. The sheer size of the city is enough to make one stand in awe at the wealth of resources the Kingdom has at their disposal. Sheer white and red colors adorn the walls, hallways and buildings of this great city. With strong stone and metal walls protecting the inner kingdom as well as a few close by villages. The Holy Kingdom is famous for its connection to the Mother-Goddess as well as the Festival of the Lights.
Religion/Opinion of the Seraph:Adores the Legend of the Seraph and firmly believes there will be another to come to stop some unforeseen cataclysm in the future. They have believed in this ever since the Seraph of old walked the land. Notable Locations: The Sanctum of the Mother-Goddess - A pristine temple made of chiseled white marble and matching red tapestry and other gorgeous architecture. The Sanctum has an underground chamber which some citizens of the Holy Kingdom believe is used for strange rituals. Only the High Priest is permitted to enter the Underground chamber. Castle Khrousahvell - "His Majesty's Pride". A tantamount to the wealth and status of those who rise to nobility in the Holy Kingdom It's glorious towers and staggering walls are said to have been blessed by the Mother-Goddess herself. It houses the knights training grounds and their barracks and seems to have near impenetrable defenses. The Glorious Market - Stalls and vendors selling their wares seem to stretch on forever here in the great marketplace.
4.) The Province Adrift: Elthari (L-Thaaree)
The most beautiful of all the major cities, Elthari the Province Adrift used to be attached directly to the land mass of Ruyunae. However, of centuries of wear and tear against the rocks and heavy storms in that part of the world the shallow and that connected it fell apart and the water rose. Now the only way to reach the land is by ship, or you have to be a really good swimmer!
The province is ruled by one the people call the Ruler. She has been known to be a loving and gentle soul and the current large populace of Elthari knows this to be true. Elthari is a popular luxury land given its white sand and clear waters and beautiful weather. The province itself has no walls due to being a series of connected islands. The architecture is a pure nature with buildings flowing in strange ways and mostly built with towers. Stone and wooden structures dot the Province. The rise of monster attacks have driven some away from venturing out to the island province. Elthari is most famous for its school of magic. As well as the birth place of the first companion of the Seraph of old.
Religion/Opinion of the Seraph: Elthari: Believes in the Seraph but maintains a neutral stance towards them at the moment. Elthari is a big tourist attraction so it is a bit different given how much of a mixing pot of culture it has become.
- Places of Interest/Notable Locations - The Lonely Islet - If one stands along the northern white beaches of the beautiful Elthari they can quickly recognize an assortment of three or four islands nestled next to each other. It would take a ship's journey to reach these islands but access to them is forbidden by the Ruler herself. The people do not know why. A rumor has spread around that the Lonely Islet is where a great monster resides and feeds on sailors who stray too close to it. Sea's Respite: A gorgeous Inn/Tavern that is almost always booked full. It is something relaxing in a somewhat harsh land as all of Elthari seems to follow that pattern. They do a good job of pampering those that can find the chance to stay a night in this lavish Inn but the price is immense.
Greetings! Thank you for getting this far if you did. So this is a little idea I had tossing around in my brain and thought I would finally throw it out to the wolves and see if I could get any takes. I promise I seasoned so it should be tasty! I actually did want this to be inspired by simple legends of: Ancient evil rises up, band of heroes get together and go fight said evil. I see nothing wrong with such a tried and true method of storytelling and I feel like it could be incredibly fun to play with others. And before you go in further, Yes this is somewhat inspired by Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy and most heavily Lord of the Rings. I just feel like they all have incredible elements of story telling and fantasy environments so I wanted to string out the idea I had in my brain and whaddaya know, I typed all this.
Little bit about what I was expecting from the RP. So, as you may have guessed I would be playing the role of the Seraph. “Hey!” You say as you ready your pitchfork and torch and tie me to a stake ready to burn me. “That’s not fair! He’s the hero isn’t he?! Everyone only loves the Hero!”
To which I will wiggle my hands out from the ropes binding me and plead for my life. “Wait wait! Sure yes I would be the Seraph but he is hardly the tried and true Hero of this tale. I want every single player I play with to truly feel like a Hero. That is why I gave the Seraph next to no powers UNLESS he meets close friends and helps them awaken to their true potential. This gives the party more dynamic and the thing I love the most: character development!”
I’ll wait for the fires to roast me or let you back away and ponder what I said. Either way I’m going to keep typing words! So yes, the Seraph is not the only hero. He’s powerless alone so I wanted everyone else I am with to feel important. To feel like what they have their character do matter.
I am a HUGE sucker for character development. Oh? Your character has a tragic backstory they don’t want to share but it eventually comes out? That’s great, Seraph needs to help his friends! Not too keen on the Seraph when you first meet him? Punch him in the face! Let your anger be known. Friendships grow and bloom into something so I wanted to have some fun along the way. The villains in the campaign would range from deadly serious, to dark and dastardly masters of magic, to wacky characters I hope you enjoy beating up.
In this fantasy RP I would love to include the holy trinity of fantasy races. The Elves, Humans and the Dwarves. However, if you are interested in this and want to play something a bit on the wild side I am more than happy with that! I do not want to put limitations on this as I want some help world building as well. I posted this in the Advanced section mainly due to how much character development I would like to have happen as well as the amount of world building. I am not asking us to create a new Tolkein book here, just enough to go in with the mentality of "our actions have consequences and we can shape the world". I am not strict about post length either. A few paragraphs should suffice. Quality over quantity they always say :) Use of magic is not only welcome but encouraged. I’d be using it, so… (:
So please, voice your opinions and hopefully your enthusiasm to join. If I have piqued your interest at all please let me know by either replying here or sending me a PM! I would love to plan out some OOC stuff on Discord as well if that is what others want to do.
I am mainly looking for 3 to 4 people to RP with here. I do not know my own ability to bring people in but in the off chance that this does gain more attention I would open up to the idea of adding more slots for players.
The RP would begin with all of your characters attending the Festival of the Lights after you have a strange vision. Something compelling you to attend the Festival.
The Vision
The past few days you have been having the same vision. This vision only occurs once every day and it is not always when you are asleep. Sometimes it does play in your mind in your sleep and seems dream like. Other times it may be during the bright and sunny day time. A day dream that lasts a mere few seconds but the vision feels much longer. The Vision is always the same. A repeating sequence of events that never changes. Every time you have it you can try to think of something new to do but it always ends the same way. It begins with you finding yourself in a desolate, dead land of some kind. The only structures around you being the small cobblestone alter you're near, the plethora of dead trees and fauna around you and the large, forbearing grey-scale castle looming over you. You find that you are not alone. You are standing amidst a small group though if you attempt to gauge their appearances your eyes are met with a blinding light instead. In front of the group stands a young man. He raises his hand and strange tattoo like markings shine on his right arm. They stretch all the way from his shoulder down to his fingertips. He holds this position for a while and you can tell whatever he is doing is taking a great toll on his stamina. It is then that you act without hesitation and all of the people around the man, including you, feel a surge of warmth wash over you. Markings on yourself appear in random places for each of the people and you all seem to come together for this. The man in the middle seems overjoyed and the surge of white light pulses around you all. Then, just as the man turns around the say something all fades to black and a malicious laughter can be heard ringing in your ears. Shortly after the laughter fades a polar opposite plays out. A soft voice finds you. As if speaking directly to you and you alone.
The voice speaks with sadness. "Please, I beg of you..." It echoes through your mind and if you turn to try and find the face of the voice you are met with only darkness. "Please, I would not ask this of any mere child of Ruyunae. I ask that you journey in my stead. Go where I cannot. I do not place this burden on you with a light heart. It pains me greatly. However, I trust you. You must find my child. Your quest begins in the Holy Kingdom... the day of the Festival of the Lights. Please, find the Seraph. Quell this coming nightmare before all is lost."
Seconds after this, no more of the endearing voice can be heard. A few more seconds pass and you would wake. Either from your day dream, slumber, or come to your senses while standing guard at your post. Will you heed its call? The day of the Festival is fast approaching.
Character Sheet
Name: Gender: (Or whatever you prefer!) Race: I had the RP idea with the trifecta of fantasy races in mind. Elves, Humans and Dwarves. But I am more than happy to see other races included as well. Just adds more flavor to the story I say. Appearance: Description or picture works just fine! Birthplace: Was your character born and raised in any of the major cities of Ruyunae? Or are they from a small little village nestled in the mountains? You decide! Status or Nobility?: Is your character a high ranking knight? A lord or other notable person of importance for your hold? Perhaps you are even a prince or a princess?
Knack for magic or fighting prowess: Are you a natural savant when it comes to the magical arts? Or do you much prefer to look past such ways and focus on your combat skills with the blade? Are you a skilled archer or hunter of some kind? Or maybe even... all of the above? Personality: What drives your character. What makes them tick and what sets them at ease. Brief Background: What has your character been doing with their life up until they decide to attend the Festival of the Lights? For this you can be as wild and descriptive as you want. I love hearing about your characters as that gives me ideas for things to incorporate into the RP at later dates!
Exactly. Everyone knows no all powerful villain can defeat the power of friendship. Haha
I should have the OOC page up in the advanced section by tomorrow.
okay, so I've never done an advanced roleplay before, but I'll try my best
I’m sure you’ll be fine! I’m not asking for super lengthy posts or amazing details. Good details and structure would be nice as I’m really looking for good character development and stuff to carry the story forward.
Great! :D You can hop on over to the advanced section and post there! I’ve had a player ask some good questions so it might be nice to read if you want!
