To some, the scent of rot would have been almost suffocating. Especially so with how long it had been out in the sun. Sharp, acrid, sickly-sweet. It was the sort of scent that worked its way deep into your lungs and burned them from the inside out, pulling at the windpipes until they were taut. However, Esperanza found herself paying little thought to it as she rode for the city, the muscles of the horse beneath her visible through and past the skin. Part of it was the fact that she had been riding for a few hours now, and by this point it was just about a part of the scenery now. Part of it was the fact that this wasn’t the worst corpse she had smelled by far.
Still, that didn’t keep her from reminding herself to air out her clothes some before she entered the city itself. Esperanza was well aware that other people tended not to take to the smell of decay as well as she.
Her companion, nestled within the folds of her cloak and dozing away, was not one of those people. Although he wasn’t really a person at all, even as he spoke like one. The warmth of Chu’s fur gave a familiar sense of comfort in these unfamiliar lands, and with the one hand she chanced away from her steed’s reigns, Esp ever so gently held him ever so closer. Her best, dearest, only friend. She hoped that would change soon, however.
Upon reaching the borders of the city, she dismounted, stroking the horse on what was left of its muzzle as she did so. Some of the fur and skin sloughed away in her hand with the movement, but she stroked anyway, whispering her thanks to it. Esperanza held its head in her hands as the life she had granted it slipped away, and, slowly, its legs gave out and it laid its mangled body to rest on the earth beneath. She whispered again, a hushed, quiet prayer to Death for the safety of its soul, then stood and left it behind as she entered the city.
She wiped her hands clean with some disinfectant as she did so, of course.
As the buildings rose around her, towering, Esperanza found herself promptly gawking at everything. She was supposed to immediately find herself a place to stay and go from there, but the urge to explore was burning in her chest. Everything was just so loud, everything so new and bright and fast and fresh.
“Chu!” Face split in a wide, goofy grin, she went to plop down on one of the benches, nudging the mound within her cloak as she did so. “Chu, wake up! You must see the city with me!”
He was dozing a bit deeply, but that was fine.
Esperanza had all the time in the world, and they would explore this bright, splendid, incredible new land together.
@Rodiak Esperanza probably doesn't have [i]the[i] La Llorona on hand either, but she does have a lot of freaky ghosts at her disposal? If that's any improvement.
And Esp is all about being weirdly cheerful to people who are incredibly distant, haha.
@Rodiak Hooray for making nightmares a reality(?)!
And that sounds good to me! Esperanza is a really friendly young lady, so she'd probably delighted to have friends. Especially female necromancers, cause she's just a smidge sexist in her beliefs about gender roles in the practice of necromancy.
@Rodiak I'm glad you like her! :D It probably isn't the actual Chupacabra- it swallows things whole, but it doesn't suck the blood of goats. She just sort of summoned it, and immediately named it after a monster.
And I'd be down. I hope I didn't step on your toes or anything! She's actually an older version of a character I use for another roleplay, cause I wanted to try out her older self to see how she functioned.
@Rodiak That would be awesome! Lemme go read up and see where he is exactly, cause Esperanza is just gonna casually ride up to the border of the city on a zombie horse, then ditch it and go from there.
Power/Skills: Necromancy: Esperanza is an incredibly powerful necromancer for her age, due to the years spent at the practice and the raw strength passed through her family. Not only can she raise corpses to her bidding, but she can also commune with and command spirits. Those who can sense spirits or spiritual energy might find that she’s perpetually surrounded by a veritable army of spirits, either hanging back and observing, or waiting at the forefront for her directions. While she can command them into performing tasks for her, the spirits are still very much entities with free will, and will attempt to act independently at times- something Esperanza herself allows, due to her beliefs. Depending on how much energy is flowing through the spirits, they range from being simply traces of themselves, to nearly corporeal- if not transparent- ghosts that can move things about with ease.
Conjuring/Warding: The Ciervo family also regularly dabbles in blood rituals, and, as such, it is a knowledge that has been passed onto Espie as well. By painting sigils in her own blood, she can create wards against evil or bind them temporarily, depending on how much detail she puts into the sigil. In addition, it’s also possible for her to summon...beings, demons included. While she has a pool of creatures she often calls, her most prominent is a rather hideous being that she fondly refers to as “Chupcabra”, or “Chu” for short.
The creature possesses a wide, human smile and a very human tongue, with the head, nose, and ears of a cat. Its body and hind legs are that of a weasel, its front paws are akin to an aye-aye, and its eyes, black in color, are so numerous and so clustered together that they could be mistaken for spider’s eggs. Its tail is long, and ends in five sharp points, like the claws of a witch. Chitinous bone like teeth cover its belly, and the rest of its body is covered in thick, blood red fur. Chu tends to serve as a sort of hammerspace for some of Esperanza’s belongings, although it’s also capable of speech. Its voice is high and womanish, despite the fact Esp refers to it as a male.
Species: Human- Necromancer
Crush: Currently N/A.
Relationship: None- Heterosexual
Appearance: Esperanza is a fairly slight young woman, with dark eyes, thick waves of black hair grown to the center of her back, and full lips that are often carefully rouged. She stands at 5’3”, and often carries a dreamy expression on her face- although it’s most often not her face that draws the most attention. Instead, one might find themselves more interested in the pitch black tattoos that completely cover her arms and back, taking the form of feathers, and heavy wings that run down her back. Her pinkie finger on her left hand has been amputated down to the knuckle, as well as several of her toes on both feet. She tends to dress in bright, flowing skirts, blouses, and flats, although when travelling she dons a heavy brown cloak and hood.
Personality: Esperanza is...not what one might expect from a death worshipping cultist, to say the least. Ever friendly and eager to help, the necromancer holds in cheer what she lacks in street smarts. She holds a fascination with the world outside home, and is incredibly loyal- both to her religion, and to any friends that earn her (easily obtainable) trust. She’s slow to anger, quicker to become upset than genuinely enraged, and tends to just want everyone to get along more than anything else.
Background: While many necromancing groups could be thought of as “eccentric” by the standards of others, the Ciervo lineage is one of the more strange ones. Based in rural Mexico, the Ciervos are a line of Necromancers that found their start back when the Mayans were still alive and well. They have made a name for themselves for their rather interesting community- a cult by their own creation, based around the worship of the Lady Death. The methods have ranged from cannibalism to live human sacrifice in the past, although due to the intervention of other magical groups, they have tampered these practices down for the most part.
The cult rounds to about a few hundred members in modern times, and is a primarily matriarchal society led by La Hijas de la Muerte: The Daughters of Death. As the name would imply, the Daughters are a group made up of exclusively female necromancers chosen as young girls from the Ciervo line, who are seen as the leaders and guardians of the cult. It is their job to organize and perform the various sacraments, rituals and ceremonies the cult performs in their god’s name, overlook and make decisions, tend to the bodies within the public crypt, and protect their community from harm.
Esperanza was one such girl, having been chosen as a young child after an incident involving the channeling of her great-grandmother’s spirit. She was promptly whisked away to reside with the other Daughters, and, while tutored in the basics of learning, her education was primarily focused around learning control of her own developing powers, varieties of blood wards, preparation of cadavers, and so on and so forth. While allowed to roam the grounds of the cult and visit family, most of her time was spent in the crypts. For the most part, Esp was content with this life, albeit somewhat lonely.
Upon growing up, Esperanza was tasked with a bit of a diplomatic mission- the Ciervos had been informed of a town populated with man and monster alike, and wished to investigate it. And, potentially, to scope it out for possible members. Esperanza was delighted to take upon the mission, and as such, promptly set out to find this strange town for herself.
