To say that Corey Graham was nervous about his very first day at Glades Fall High School would be a bit of an understatement. For as long as he could remember, Corey been attending school with the same general bunch of people; most of the friends he had made in kindergarten were the exact same people he took the E train with every day to their local middle school. But now things were different; Now, Corey didn't have that large group of friends that he could strut into school with and act like they were the ones who ran things. He didn't have anybody that he could call up to play ball with in the neighborhood park whenever he got tired of doing homework or listening to his auntie nag. Now, Corey was nothing more than the "new kid" from the Big Apple, and there was nothing easy or comforting about that fact.

Corey couldn't help but groan and reach for the snooze button as his cell phone alarm woke him from his deep sleep. As soon as the alarm had been silenced and the young man had turned back over in bed, however, the curtains that hung on his bedroom window were suddenly pulled wide open, allowing bright rays of sun to filter into the room. Corey groaned once more as he used his hand to shield his eyes from the sun. "Rise and shine, my little Sophomore!" Auntie Debra's voice rang out, "It's time to get up and get ready! Breakfast will be ready in fifteen minutes; don't make me have to come back up these steps." After his aunt had finally left his room, Corey hurriedly jumped out of his bed and went to pull the curtains shut, but froze in place when his aunt began yelling from downstairs. "And leave that damn window open, you need to let some light into that room!"

Within the next fifteen minutes, Corey had showered, brushed his teeth, and thrown on a fresh outfit. He made it down to the kitchen with one minute to spare. "Morning Auntie," the boy mumbled as he took a seat at the table. His stomach growled as his aunt placed a piping hot bowl of cheese grits and sausage on the place-mat in front of him. Ten minutes later, the boy was sitting in the passenger seat of his aunt's Jeep, his stomach full and his mind racing.

Auntie Debra didn't bother to linger after her nephew had gotten out of the car. Instead, she yelled a simple "Good luck" out of the window before pulling off. Corey only hesitated for a moment before turning on his heel and approaching the school building. Checking the time on his cell phone, Corey realized that he was very early, so he decided that he would take this time to collect his thoughts and maybe even memorize his schedule so that he wouldn't have to carry it around with him the entire day. Corey soon found an empty bench in the school courtyard; he placed his bag in the seat next to him before pulling out his cell phone once again. His friends in New York just so happened to be starting their first day of school at the same time he was. Sighing, Corey hunched over and scrolled through his social media accounts, randomly liking photos of the kids back home who were eager to show off their first day outfits. He couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness in his chest.

I Just Wanna Live
Much like the many other times Sonny Drake had referred to Kavan as the "Indian Kavi" or something similar, Kavan had yet another witty response right on the tip of his tongue, ready to fire back at the other boy without hesitation. This time, however, was different. This time, Kavan decided that he would hold his tongue and continue to sip on his freshly mixed drink instead; after all, he did come to enjoy the party with his friends, not entertain Sonny and his idiotic remarks. When Archer asked Kavan about his sister, he simply let out a chuckle and shook his head. "I think I embarrassed her enough," he said after taking another large gulp from his cup, "And to say that she was mad about me leaving would be a bit of an understatement. But she got over it pretty quickly when I threatened to show her new boyfriend a bunch of her old baby pictures." Thinking back on the words he'd exchanged with his older sister just a few minutes before, Kavan couldn't help but shake his head and laugh to himself. This laugh was cut short, however, when he noticed the slight tension that began to develop.

It was in that moment that Penelope Richards decided to glide past, letting her fingertips gently brush Sonny's arm as she did so. Kavan could practically see the steam coming out of Marisol's ears at that point; the girl stormed away from the group right after Penny pushed her way back through the group, giving Kavan's back the same treatment as she did Sonny's arm. The boy involuntarily shuddered at the girl's touch, wrinkling his nose once she'd disappeared into the crowd. Kavan knew all too well about Penny's reputation thanks to how fast gossip spreads around King's Academy. He also knew a bit more about the young woman than he'd like to thanks to one of his occasional late-night incognito browsing sessions. Even though that was some time ago, Kavan couldn't help but feel jumpy and nervous whenever she was around.

Shaking his head, Kavan was just about to refocus his attention on Archer when something else caught his eye instead; looking past him, Kavan could see Marisol bump into a taller, Hispanic boy that he recognized as one of the school's soccer players. In a matter of seconds, Marisol's knee and fist went flying, and the boy ended up holding his nose and groaning in pain. "Well damn," Kavan said as the girl stormed off. Soon after, Archer started running after Marisol, and Kavan simply sipped from his cup as he watched the boy trudge towards the pier. "So glad that I decided to come tonight. Wouldn't want to miss out on any of the usual drama," he said sarcastically to the person who stood closest to him, who just so happened to be that new guy with the English accent. "Oh, and by the way... welcome to King's."
