Kitsuna glanced over at Ren, her expression casual but her gaze was intense as she watched him for a reaction. She was happy to see he was suitably impressed and with a smiling swagger she trotted before him, taking in his expression of confusion mixed with awe. Swinging her tails around her with pleasure she tracked her blue eyes on him.

“I have always been able to do it, ever since I was a pup. It’s in my blood, my father was a true Kitsune of many tails after all.” Sitting herself down a little way from Ren she looked back towards the city of men but her eyes were not focused on anything in particular as a small sigh escaped her. “So you see I am not as defenceless as you seem to think and in order to help you, which is of course the reason we are making this trip to begin with, there seems to be some things I have to do.”

For a while she was still and silent as she continued to gaze at nothing in particular, her thoughts buzzing around inside her head for a few silent minutes.

“Do you remember that dream I had about you … I remember walking into a place … and when I walked I was tall and I walked on two legs…” She turned her face back to Ren, she was calm and serious as her eyes bored into him.

Elemmíre watched in wonder as he began moving around the console with the grace and confidence of the experienced captains and admirals that had once flew the ships of her people. He was quite for a while as he worked the machine and although they weren’t moving too much she could feel the engines power through her hooves as it hummed in a friendly way. Quickly her interest was drawn around to gaze at the rest of this amazing … ship? Well she presumed it was a ship of some kind, if the feel of the engine was anything to go by. However when he spoke her large eyes alighted back on his face which seemed tense and worried.

"Is there a way you can appear human? If so might be easier to avoid been sighted when we are out, can't hide in the TARDIS forever. Either way Id keep you safe, But we need some way to avoid you getting in danger."

She smiled brightly at him and nodded while taking a step backwards. Once more bringing her hands together before her but this time she appeared to be almost praying. Closing her eyes she began to sing softly in the language of her people, the rhythm was sweet, simple, lilting. This built into a crescendo as she sung on, the power being held in the song itself, the words merely an accompaniment. As she neared the end a bright light appeared at the tip of her horn, the light grew brighter and brighter until she was engulfed in its brightness.

On the final haunting note the light dissolved into thousands of tiny sparkles that dissipated around her. Looking down at herself she was pleased to see a flawless transformation. Elemmíre now had the body of a normal human with soft feet, straight legs, pale skin and no tail. Her features had become more human however her face was still innocent with large violet eyes framed with dark lashes, a straight nose and small pink lips that seemed to naturally curve in a smile. The largest change was that her horn was now hidden and in its place was a petite, rose coloured star shape. Flicking back her long mane of star coloured hair Elemmíre admired herself from a few angles, it had been a while since she had to use an alias form. Looking back at him her head tilted in question.

“Will this do? It is not as close to the human kind as you have managed, but I have walked amongst them before in this form and they did not notice me.” However she did pluck at the horrible skimpy thing she had been forced to wear at the auction house. “I do think I will need different clothes though as I am sure no matter what world we go to these are likely to make me stand out or cause a scandal.”

Beth smiled with affectionate warmth at Clint as he explained about his history; there was no one in this business that had a happy story of how they entered it and it saddened her that she had heard its duplicate on many occasions before. Her own tale had its own bitter sting but only those in darkness could hunt in it or at least accept that it was there. She had studied his features while he spoke and in the lines of his face she read the pain that still lingered within him, a burden that was never to be relinquished.

“Don’t worry, it was only a joke, I never hunt the innocence.” Her words broke the prolonged silence that had filled the room as Clint’s speech came to a halting conclusion. Beth’s eyes finally caught Clint’s gaze and blue locked with brown, he seemed so human, so vulnerable that Beth was willing to bet that was not something he had ever told another living soul. She saw him as he was, gone was the pretence they had to present to the world and she found that bared as he was he seemed the more for it, without the bravado, just a man, a man who had walked many a painful road. At that time she found that she had no words of comfort to offer, for what could be said without sounding hollow and empty.

Maybe it was the drink, and she would swear it was but she was moved by him and she felt the need to give what she could in comfort. In one fluid motion she got gracefully from the bed, eyes sparkling, and expression soft in the flickering candle light, hair fanning down her bare shoulders. She knew he was the type to startle and the last thing she wanted to do was ruin their newly begun partnership, possibly friendship so she advanced slowly till she stood beside him. Leaning forward with as much movement as her corset would allow Beth placed a small soft kiss on Clint’s cheek. It was the only thing she could offer to someone who looked as sad and lost as he had, the only thing sincere enough to be given.

It was over in a heartbeat as Beth swung herself back to her full height. The kiss itself had been kind, caring and overall chaste although she could not lie about the blush blooming on her own cheeks nor the fact that she wouldn’t have minded something entirely less innocent. However she would not push or even ask, as well as she knew Clint, this was not something to take lightly and she would not treat it as such. If he wished to view that with sisterly affection then so be it.

Without breaking the moment she offered him another dazzling smile, if nothing else she had replaced the sadness on his face with surprise and did she even detect a hint of satisfaction? However she would allow him to speak first, so he could dictate on what terms he wanted to move forward with.
Luna stood with Illyce’s assistance and the two of them made their way slowly over to Goya who was foraging for grass on the forest floor. She felt Illyces words drape around her like a warm blanket, it was not going to heal the emotional damage but it was a start. She couldn’t manage a smile yet and the tears were still clinging to her eyelashes but the place where Illyce had rubbed her cheek was tingling with warmth and that at least was a feeling, unlike the vast nothingness inside.

With Illyce’s help Luna was thrust up onto Goya’s back and Illyce jumped up right behind her, folding her into a comforting embrace. Luna held onto her with one hand and the other she tangled into Goya mane, the familiar smell of horse and Illyce was so soothing and Luna just rested her head against Illy’s shoulder.

She thought about what Illyce had said and could not help the small smile, Illyce the knight, her courageous knight thought she was brave. A yawn broke through her smile as she leant against Illyce, she was exhausted both physically from the running and poison then there was the mental strain. Her long, silver hair which had fallen from its secure braiding was instead flowing across Illyce’s shoulder. Luna’s lashes were fluttering like dark butterflies on her pale face as she resisted against the inevitable.

“Sorry Illyce.” Was all she managed, she knew the knight was tired too but this was too much for her, she wasn’t strong like them. Luna went limp as she fell into a exhausted sleep.
Seraphina smiled to herself as all heads turned to look as she passed, some with looks of disbelief, jealousy and wanting, the women’s eyes on her gown and the men’s on herself. She wore the beautiful dress of her design, the many layers of black silk no heavier than a breath of wind and they rustled with a whispering sigh. Sparkling gems of onyx, black pears and polished ebony glittered all over her, amongst the faux silk feathers and hanging from the real feathered wings that were suspended from her shoulder blades. Her star spun hair was strung into long ringlets which were bedecked with black opal star-bursts and glossy black feathers. Upon her arms she wore long black gloves of fine lace and bound about her face was a most intricate mask, shaped like a black swan, its beak across her nose and a spray of real feathers fanning across its length. The final glory was the small crown made of gleaming onyx, it perched on her hairline, just above the mask so it seemed to be incorporated into one, a seamless line of graceful bird features crowned in glittering darkness.

She walked alone, for once without a chaperone. Amongst a crowd of hidden faces she was granted anonymity, a luxury she was seldom afforded, although she was not truly anonymous as there were none here tonight in such finery or with such a detailed costume. Walking up the pathway her smile widened, she had even gone to the trouble of arriving at the front door, as if she was no more than a mere guest and not lady of the castle. Making her way serenely up the path way she watched as other couples fell back to make way for her, not only to gaze with near indecent incredulity on their faces but sure in the knowledge that only one of rank could have a gown as hers. Floating up the steps Seraphina made her way into the entrance way and along the corridor before the ball room. It was at the end of the hall that the master of ceremonies stood and announced each guest not by name as was custom but by costume. Seraphina stood next in line as he announced the Lady Fox and Lord Hound. She smiled as his eyes came to rest upon her and she could have sworn she was granted a rare smile from the grey haired, stern looking man, leaning forward for a moment she conversed her wishes to him and he nodded. Striking the ground with his staff all heads turned to see the next guest; his voice rang out clear and bright into the large ballroom.

“May I present, the Swan Queen!” Seraphina sauntered into the room, riding the wave of his announcement and walking unhindered through the crowd to Baron De'Vance who was seated upon his chair greeting the guests as they presented themselves to him. Looking around the hall as she walked she was pleased to see it was as magnificent as she had environed, gleaming glass and crystal sparkles all around, candles shone brightly all around filling the hall with light and warmth, the musicians were playing perfectly, just enough to fill the small gaps between conversations. Then there were the people, they were a sight to behold, such colours swirled and mingled all around her like many dancing blossoms, creatures of dreams and nightmares alike prowled around, there stood gods and goddesses, fairies and angles and all in between. Some like Seraphina had gone to great lengths with their costumes and other were simple with a doublet of black and white and mask to match or cat ears and tail attached onto a brown dress.

Moving as gracefully as a swan on water she glided through the parted crowded until she reached her father where he sat upon a chair elevated on the dais. As was typical Lord De'Vance’s outfit was near as stern as normal and only the extra rims and cuffs gave any indication that this was festive wear. She saw he held in his hand a mask on a spun pole, same as last year, the fierce countenance of the eagle was his chosen costume and it reflected him well Seraphina mused. She watched as he conversed quietly with Broadmere as she approached and was concerned by both their brooding expressions.

Coming before them Lord De'Vance was interrupted from his musing by the head butler’s short throat clearing. Watching with amusement as he first turned to glare angrily at the man who had broken his train of thought and then his gaze fell upon Seraphina. She offered him her familiar smile as her violet eyes, as distinct as her hair, shone out from behind her plumage of black feathers.

“The Swan Queen, my Lord.” The butler offered in introduction as Seraphina lowered herself into a graceful curtsey, skirts pooling around her like downy feathers, arms outstretched as a ballerina might pose. For that moment she did indeed look like a swan, gracefully bowing its head from amidst its plumage, wings outspread. And for that heartbeat all did seem to still as the light glimmered of the Swan Queen, as black as midnight she stood out amongst all the other bright colours in the room. In that moment Seraphina felt a sudden chill creep up her spine as though an intense gaze was boring into her, it was a fleeting moment and then it was gone, the held breathes were released, the candles flickered again and the gentle hum of chatter filled the hall once more. Giving herself a tiny shake that shook her magnificent wings Seraphina fought very hard to resist turning around, instead raising herself elegantly to stand at her full height once more.

“My Lord, it is an honour.” She trilled to Lord De'Vance as if she was merely a lady presented to her Lord but her smile was genuine and warm but she waited to see how he would proceed.

Artemis could not help the warm, beaming smile that crept onto her face as Bright Light spoke; it was a nice surprise to hear somepony speak so. Releasing the breath she hadn’t been aware she was holding onto Artemis allowed herself to relax, posture falling back into casual, ears flicking backwards and the tension easing from her muscles. Even her mental state relaxed, the walls and barriers that had automatically been erected were falling once more as she allowed the easy smile back onto her face.

“Thank you Bri.” In this small sentence she tried to pour the depth of her gratitude and relief into these small and seemingly insignificant words, she doubted any pony would understand just how much his acceptance and care free attitude meant to her. She gave a relieved laugh and a smile, “you don’t know how good it is to hear that.” Giving her mane and tail a freeing shake Artemis smiled and nodded in agreement to Bri’s words about making a new friend. “Well then shall we continue Bri, I am very interested to see the rest of this place. If it can managed to produce a pony who can battle the toughest storm, fly through lightning like it no more worrisome than a gentle tickle and for once to meet a pony who doesn’t become a floundering sycophant when they hear what who I am and what I do.”

Trotting a few steps ahead, Artemis looked happy and expectantly at Bri, waiting for him to show her around the rest of the weather station and all of the wonders she was sure it held.

Kitsuna’s ears were flat against her skull and her face changed from one of cheer to a standoffish, distant look as she did not meet Ren’s eyes. Her claws dug small grooves into the soft earth as the silence between them dragged on.

“So can you read minds as well as control shadows?” Her voice was lofty. “If you wanted to know I did have a vague notion of heading into the town, yes for curiosities sake but also to see if I could find any information regarding the people who used you and the others.” She paused to gently lick a paw. “You know I am not powerless nor without any forms of defence. You indeed should know this.” Again she paused to lick the other paw as her face softened and her eyes found his. “You’re not the only one who has someone they care for and want to protect and help. And don’t mistake me, I appreciate your care but … but I don’t think you can survive this … or him … alone.”

She stood and walked over to him circling him quickly at a trot then sitting down in front of him, her white coat catching the starlight. “Plus this is not the form I would have taken to go into the town, I am no fool, I have been caught by humans in this shape before remember, the first time we met.”

With a small poof and a puff of smoke Kitsuna suddenly disappeared and in here place stood a woman who looked no more than 18. She was small and slim like the wolf; her hair was of palest blonde, eyes of brightest blue. She was clothed simply in a dress of deep blue which was covered in patterns like her coat. Looking down at herself Kitsuna smiled at the perfection of her change, ten fingers, ten toes and no tail … that part was new, her old transformations had been imperfect and she had retained some vestiges of the wolf including tails and sometimes ears.

In another moment there was another poof and she was back to her normal form, standing as she had been in front of Ren.

“That is a lot easier to do now.” She said with a smile.
Elemmíre panted hard as they made it through the door which shut with a final sort of snap and the loud noise of the chase was now silent, all she could hear was the whirs and clunks from around her. Keeping her head down for a moment while she panted, it had been a while since she had been run with such desperation, normally she ran for pleasure but more often than not now she did seem to be running for her life.

Finally she put her head up and actually looked around and once again found her breath lost to her as her large lilac eyes took in the building. It was so big, much bigger than could have been possible she looked around her with the extra senses of her kind extended looking to find clues to the magic of this place. It was definitely of old design, not in terms of its external layers but deep at its heart, there was an ancient wisdom, not unlike that of her kind. For a few moments she attempted to put her thoughts into coherent words eventually she could come up with nothing better than…

“It’s bigger on the inside!” She smiled brightly at him and came over to where he stood, her small hooves clicking with a chiming melody on the metal floor. Tail swishing in wonder Elemmíre continued to look around until she stood by his side. “I am fine thank you. And I want to offer you my most sincere thanks for saving me from that place.” Then a dark look crossed over her face and she turned back towards the door. “But won’t they find us in here, shouldn’t we hide. I know this place is not all it seems, can we hide where they won’t find us.” She asked, hands clasped before her in earnest pleading.
