The days rolled by in a haze of travel and weariness for Luna and she knew her companions fared no better than she. Each of them were stained with mud and dust from the road and sleeping rough each night however after three days they had finally reached the port town. From overhead the gulls wailed and cawed at everything that moved and everything did indeed move, this town was a hive of constant action, it seemed to thrum with life, noise, motion and emotion spun around and around making the its inhabitants dance to its lively tune.

They needed more supplies desperately and more than that they needed to rest and reorganise themselves. Luna was desperate to stop for another reason, not only was she sore and tired but her arm which had been cut was getting more painful each day, it will still red, hot and the cut was getting angrier looking by the day. This coupled with the fact that it was getting harder to hide these facts from her companions, Luna just needed some time away from them to try and fix it, and try would be the word. They approached the town from the outskirts and to their immense luck they came by an abandoned warehouse or barn, Luna wasn’t quite sure what its function had been previously as only three walls remained standing and most of the roof was bowed with age. It did seem that if a single breath of wind had swept past it would have collapsed but it was weatherworn and showed scars in proof that it was hardier than it seemed.

The four trudged up to it and in the appointed order of Lot, Illyce and Luna they dismounted a tired Goya who whinnied gratefully at the removal of his burdens. Illyce motioned for them to stay back while she investigated inside the structure, testing its walls and beams with a light hand and finding the ground covered with rubble but also dry and coated with layer of dust that was evidence of nothing moving within. She called back to her companions and with Luna leading Goya they made their way inside. With robotic actions they each set about the tasks they had been making each time they made camp. Lot set out to find some wood for a fire, Illyce began to unsaddle Goya and attend to his needs and Luna began setting out their bedrolls and the cooking implements.

It was about midmorning when they were each done and the camp was made and settled, they needed no fire yet as the day was still surprisingly warm, it was a day her father used to call a false summer which sometimes occurred in the autumn, fooling people into thinking winters cruel grasp was far afield rather than right around the corner. Luna sat on her bedroll trying desperately not to allow her face to show the discomfort she was in; her arm seemed to throb with every beat of her heart. However on the outside she looked just merely tired, with her knees up to her chin and her arms wrapped around them she watched Illyce and Lot talk in hushed voices. After a while Illyce walked over looking extremely worried but with determination.

“Luna, we have to go into the town to scout things out and see if we can trade some of what we have for what we need. I don’t want to but both I and Lot should go as we can get more done with two of us. Unless you are worried about being alone, I have scouted around and so has Lot and there are no other people for miles around, but I would stay if you needed me.” Luna smiled at Illyce as the woman before her fretted visibly. With her good arm, although she acted though it made no difference, Luna reached out and stroked a lock of flaming hair back from Illyce’s face.

“You needn’t worry Illy, I will be perfectly fine, and I have Goya to protect me.” Goya lifted his head at his name and nickered as if in agreement. Illyce smiled but it seemed for a moment that she would still insist on staying, then a hand appeared on her shoulder and they both looked up at Lot.

“You heard the princess. Come on while we still have light.” Lot stated and Illyce nodded in agreement, then together they both made their way towards the town on foot, Illyce glancing back at the last moment to look at Luna who again offered her the brightest of smiles. Once she was sure the two of them were well on their way Luna stopped her act and let out a faint groan. Raising her hand to her tunic Luna rolled back the fabric and undid the bandage that was still covering it. What she saw shocked her very core and she had to fight back the nauseous bile that rose in her throat. The skin was very tight and red still but now she noticed a faint smell of ... of rot she thought with abhorrence there was also two streaks of black beginning to run up her arm. It was worse than she though. Vaguely she wondered what had caused this, poison on the blade, dirt in the wound, she supposed at this stage it didn’t matter the cause only the cure was important.

Hoisting herself up from the ground was an effort and for a moment the world swam before her eyes. Biting her lip and gritting her resolve Luna made her way to the meadow in which their shelter stood. The meadow was starting to settle into its full autumn colours but with the heat a few noble flowers continued to bloom. It was amongst these that Luna spotted what she sought, she had some knowledge of herb law and in her studies she had learnt much of the flora and fauna. It was the medium bell shaped flowers in bright yellow that she plucked, cats claw, known for its ability to heal wounds gone bad. She was not sure if it could do much against her cut or if it was not poison in which case this would be of little help.

Shrugging to herself Luna went back to the shelter and began a fire intending to make a tea from the flowers. She would have to be quick to make the tea and then hide all evidence. The last thing she wanted was for either of her companions to start worrying unnecessarily.
Fey was distracted from all other trains of thought with the entrance of the teacher; she swept into the room with the fluid grace of a hunting mountain cat. She was above average height, with dark hair in a tight glossy bun and a purple orchid at its base, her skin was a shimmering mocha and Fey noted she had bright yellow eyes that missed nothing. Her high heels clicked across the floor as she made her way to the teacher’s desk and standing behind it she surveyed the class with a vague smile.

“Good afternoon class, my name is Professor Fletcher and I will be teaching you defence against the dark arts.” She turned towards the blackboard and tapped it with her wand as she continued to speak. “We will be focusing on three main areas this year, advanced spells with a focus on curses, next level monsters and duelling. In that order, so to start please open your books to page fifteen and read the chapter on curses, I will then be showing you some examples.”

By the time the bell rang Fey was aching as she massaged her neck, placing her books back in her bag with a groan she looked over at Amy who was also massaging her back. Together they grimaced but smiled, it had really been a great lesson, and the practical element had been really interesting it made such a difference to just sitting and reading the text book. Still Fey was glad this had been her finally class of the day. Soon they were in the great hall and intently discussing the new teacher with others who had not been in the class. It seemed to word amongst all the students that had a class with her had been generally positive although no one had come away from the class without some form of ache.

Once the great hall started to quite down Fey was able to look around surreptitiously and again she was disappointed in her search for Xavier. It was as if the fates had heard her call for information as two Gryffindor’s passed where they sat and Fey heard Xavier’s name.

“So yeah I heard that scrawny kid, Xavier I think, he’s in the hospital wing at the moment. Apparently he got jumped by a couple of sixth years.” Fey tried to catch more of their conversation; leaning back and straining to hear their voices as they walked away Fey inadvertently learnt too far and ended up falling off the bench to the general amusement of everyone around her. Blushing from the roots of her fair hair all the way down her neck Fey got back to her feet and sat back down on the bench. Well at least she knew something now and she was resolved that after hours she would sneak up and see Xavier, that would give him a surprise, smiling a mischievous grin Fey turned her attention back to her firends.

Luna raised a delicate eyebrow at both her travelling companions and smiled warmly, what a odd bunch they made, Illyce with her determined face doing her push ups with quick, rigid motions and Lot was watching her with incredulity written all over his face. Luna laughed lightly and went back to the pot of warm porridge which she was stirring, it was going to be mostly tasteless but it was warm and filling.

“I’m alright Lot, thank you. I’m not quite as helpless as people seem to think, plus this doesn’t require much skill, just keep stirring it. Thank you for the offer though.” Within a few minutes the meal was finished and Luna scooped out three bowls of steaming porridge and handed one to each of her companions, Illyce had finally stopped her press ups and was eyeing the dish warily but Luna pretended not to notice. Taking a spoonful of her own food Luna blanched slightly at the blandness but it was so nice to have food, after the last couple of days they had endured anything close to normal was heavenly.

For a while there was just the soft crackling of the fire and the sound of three people who were just content to eat and regain their strength. The cave was warm and after they were done even the long road ahead didn’t seem so insurmountable. Although she hated to disturb the sleepy contentment they had to discuss their next steps if they had any hope to reach the north which was her only chance of survival.

“So does anyone know what direction we are now, are we further from our goal or closer to it?” Luna glanced at Lot who had a better knowledge of this area having spent the last few days in it she hoped they could find their bearings again. Lot seemed to blanch slightly at being asked such a direct question and he seemed to be trying to avoid her eye.

“Well Princess from what I can tell from looking around we seem to have been lucky for once. We have actually fled in the direction we were intending to go although on a parallel line from where we were before. Also we don’t seem to have lost more than a week, if we continue going north and push quite hard we should reach our destination before the worst of the storms hit,” Luna glanced outside as he spoke to where the sun was shining down upon the forest, the only hint of coming winter was felt in the night and before dawn. It was hard to believe that snow would soon lie upon the ground. “or at least it should be bearable to get through.”

Luna nodded with determination, her eyes finding Illyce’s within the shadows of the cave and they both shared a moment, only the length of a heartbeat, but with more feeling that could be said in an eternity. “Come on then, if we can push ahead today we can hopefully make up some lost ground. Let’s get going then.” Luna smiled with her blazing warmth that seemed to light up the cave more fully than the sunshine, her hair glittering as she stood, ready to face the day.
The rest of the day progressed as normal, Fey and Amy had a free period and although she hadn’t formally been given homework as she had been in the hospital wing Fey decided it would be best to follow Amy’s lead. So together they slogged through a complicated essay on the theory of vanishment, Fey had not been in the class and was finding the work extremely difficult to get her head around, and even with Amy’s help within half hour Fey’s brain had turned to mush. In the end of the hour period Fey had done her best but she still needed to do the conclusion however that could wait until the evening. Moaning with tiredness Fey clasped her head in her hands and rubbed her eyes vigorously, her reprieve was rudely interrupted when she received a playful tap on the head from Amy. Looking up in mock horror Fey gazed at her and received a laughing smile for her trouble.

“Come on now you really don’t have to be so melodramatic you always do this the first day back to school and you know the homework situation is only going to increase this year.” Fey rolled her eyes up at Amy.

“That’s fine for you to say with your big brains, you just seem to get what the teachers are saying when they explain stuff. Me it seems to go in one ear as English then when it gets to my brain it turn into gobbly gook and I don’t speak that.”

“Pfft you do fine. I think the problem you’re having today is thinking about that boy, Xavier was it. I think you like him, letting him take you off like that, no wonder you are having trouble concentrating today.” Fey squealed in indignation and pulled the threadbare cushion from the chair she was sitting in and proceeded to try and beat Amy around the head with it. They were soon locked in battle, laughter ringing out and the attention of the whole Slytherin common room on them as the cushions swished back and forth. Finally both girls fell back into their seats, faces flushed with excitement and their laughter still ringing around the vaulted common room.

“Come on. We have Defence against the dark arts now and the last thing I want to do is be late for the new teacher.” Amy nodded and together they gathered up their books and bags, straightened out their hair and made their way to the defence class room which was several floors above. They were in before the bell and took their customary seats towards the front. As they waited for the teacher to enter and the class to file in Fey unpacked her bag but was surreptitiously glancing around trying to spot Xavier. She had to be very careful, last thing she wanted was Amy catching on to what she was looking for and mocking her again but if she was honest with herself he had made quite an impression on her, something no one had done in a while.
