L O C A T I O N: Somewhere in New York City
T I M E: Present Day ( July ) Sometime around 10 AM to 1 PM

Benjamin threw on a tee shirt with the blocked out words of IT'S ABOUT TIME written across the front. The shirt, being out an off-white with the print in faded black ink, gave it an intentionally aged look. On his lower half was one of his few surviving pairs of good jeans. He held them up with a belt that had a few trinkets dangling from it. Mainly a lucky rabbit's foot and a spinning coin.

Feeling completely dressed for the outing, he slipped out of his room and moved down the stairs. When he reached the bottom, his pace slowed. His hand reached out then carefully cracked the door open. He risked a glance before closing it behind him.

Last night his parents returned. Daniel simply slipped into bed and passed out, unconcerned about the whole situation. Mainly that Benjamin had arrived home first. It didn't matter to him, but it wasn't the case with the Dragon Lady. The woman had been subtly stalking him ever since.

Seeing his chance to escape, Benjamin bolted for the back door. It clicked softly behind him as he stepped onto the concrete steps and toward Athena waiting for him with a wide smirk on his lips.

"Quick, let's get out of here. I managed to escape her claws, but I’m not sure how long it will last." Benjamin urged great haste with his tone.

Athena nodded, decked out in a sun hat with a pastel blue shirt with billowy sleeves and string that comes from the collar. With black shorts, the top hanging low on her hips and wrapped comfortably around her butt, and some comfortable, gently worn grey chucks, she looked ready for an outing in the city. On her back was a small black backpack with golden accents. Sunglasses helped hide her features from under the brim of her sun hat that when she turned toward Benjamin, she grinned.

"Glad you managed to escape, even if it's for a short while," Athena said, falling into step next to him as she followed after him with a hand on her hat for minute adjustments.

"Where are we going?" she asked after a moment.

“Umm…” Benjamin pressed his finger to his lips, imitating thoughtfulness. After a moment or two, he once more returned to smirking at her.

“You’ll have to guess or wait until we get there. But, I do know that you’ll like it though.” He gestured toward the bus stop with his thumb indicating they needed to use it. The large metal beast was already drawing to a stop at the sign, waiting for the line to enter.

Athena huffed as they made their way to the bus. Once cleared and paid for their fare, they found a discreet spot in the back to sit and Athena began to try and guess all the possible places where they could go. Already ruling out all of the possible places that might be overly crowded, she guessed their mutually favorite places in the city, but since it had been more than a handful of years since she was last here, her guesses were varied.

After changing buses a few times to get to their desired destination, Athena was starting to wane in her guesses and she opted to watch the scenery pass in the hope she could figure it out by where they were going.

Recognizing the streets, she eyed Benjamin as the bus rolled to a stop so that they could walk the rest of the way on foot. She held her breath, not wanting to be hopeful for something as magical as a show. Stepping off, Athena replaced the sunglasses as the buzz of the city blared around her, humidity and heat greeting her from the manufactured air-conditioning of the bus.

“This way. Need to move fast before the tickets run out.” Benjamin stated, giving her a hint and gesturing his head toward a very famous building: The Lincoln Center.

Athena was unable to help the squeak of surprise, the corners of her lips pulling up as her heart skipped beats.
“Figured you might want to enjoy being a paying viewer rather than an actress in a show. Especially with things being put on hold.” He watched her reaction as they walked through the crowded sidewalk.

She laughed, beaming at Benjamin with a look of disbelief and utter elation. "Benjamin! For real? Honest? I can watch a show?" It almost looked like her eyes was sparkling with anticipation when she leaned in, grabbing his arm in excitement.

“I don’t see why not? There’s no rule in the universe that you, of all people, sit and enjoy one show. You've worked hard enough to earn it.” His hand came out to push her along as a gruff man pushed his way through, his eyes glared at the younger pair. Benjamin just rolled his eyes. He didn’t care. Right now, all that mattered at this moment was Athena’s reaction.

“So, let’s get going. I think the play is about a man named Hart Moss and has a rotating stage, something I think you’ll like.”

Athena didn't notice the gruff man tried to push past them since all she could think about now was the show. Instead, she was further pressed against Benjamin, which worked out because her hands separated from his arm to jump and give him an excited hug.

"Yes! I've heard about it—ah, thank you so much, Ben!" She exclaimed, gleefully squeezing him in a tight and near breathless hug. And then he's free, Athena grabbed his wrist and started running to the Lincoln Center.

Zooming through the people with surprising agility, she nearly dragged Benjamin to the box office with her energy barely contained as she fidgeted in place.

Benjamin’s eyes widened and his feet pushed to keep up with her. For a small girl, he realized quickly she could move fast. As the growing line forced them to stop, he reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet. When they finally reached the window, the woman took his debit card and then gave them the tickets. He passed one to Athena before ushering her inside.

One of the male ushers took their tickets and showed them to their seats. With a gentle nudge, he let Athena slip in first and get comfortable. He followed suit while they waited for the seats to be filled out.

The moment they got to the ticket counter when they finally settled in their seats, Athena was unable to hide her excitement as she tucked away her sunglasses and hat. Her eyes practically sparkled, words spewing quickly in a mix of Chinese and Korean as she smashed the languages together, and the continuous tugging of Benjamin's shirt. The tugging, the excited gibberish, and the consistent number of hugs she kept throwing his way had her positively beaming between her fits of giggles.

Once Benjamin let her into the seat, she slowly began to settle down, reading through the offered pamphlet that was filled with information regarding the actors and actresses that were to take part in the play. Since Athena had been mostly abroad, unfortunately, the names aren't familiar, but that didn't tamper her excitement and curiosity toward the play. Glancing around the theater, she was glad they got one of the higher box seats since it made things easier when they needed to leave.

When the curtains slid open to reveal their grand stage, she was shaking Benjamin's arm in her enthusiasm.

And then her attention was entirely on the revolving set of the play. So engrossed, she became quiet, gaze focused on the words that were passionately spoken from each actor and actress and their turmoil that came to life. Athena watched as Moss Hart made attempts in writing plays that they would eventually reach stardom. The extensively large stage spun between each scene, each change in interactions between each actor and actress—personal, intimate, and deeply felt that Athena was enraptured. Recognizable buildings and architecture of The Bronx slowly changed into different scenes as Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The lights and the extra effects on top of the revolving stage left an impression, and she was mesmerized.

It ended in success with the renowned and triumphant release of the play Once in a Lifetime. It was the beginning of one of the most renowned collaborations in American theater. And it was when the curtains drew to a close after the final bow and applause from the people that she leaned back, breathless.

"That was wonderful!" Exuberantly, she turned to Benjamin and again, reached around his neck to give him another hug and slumped once more back into her seat. "I haven't gone to see a play in so long—thank you, Benjamin."

Her voice went soft, her longing apparent as she stared at the stage.

“I’m glad you liked it and that’s payback for the surprise you gave me,” Benjamin stated as he rose from his seat and held out his hand to help her.

After a moment, Athena turned her head to Benjamin and took his hand, making sure she had all of her personal belongings before following him out. Only when she was steady on her feet did her hand drop from his and she quickly fell into step next to him.

“I’m feeling a craving for ice cream, what about you?” he asked.

She hummed, lightly placing a finger to her cheek in thought. "That actually sounds like a lovely idea." And then looked back to him as she donned her hat. "Do you know any good places to go?"

“Depends on how far you want to go. Grom, though pricey, has some good gelato and among good reviews. If you don’t mind taking a bus, the other option is Emack’s and Bolio’s. They got some unique favors ranging from cereal to candy.” Benjamin began to file out, gesturing for Athena to keep close and move with him.

Keeping close to Benjamin's side, she seemed thoughtful. "I don't mind either option," she said with a grin. "After all, it's your city—and you know me, I'm always up for an adventure." When they stepped outside, once more, she placed her sunglasses back on when the sun greeted them from the darkness of the theater.

"How about—whichever you think is best?"

“Not much for overly sweet stuff so leaning to Grom. I'd rather pay more for something savory than getting something I won’t really enjoy.” He pointed out, deciding based on his own preference than hers to save them time.

At that, Athena gave a nod of approval.

As they exited the theater, they chatted about the storyline. It had become obvious that Benjamin had lost interest about half-way through as he struggled to fill in the gaps. He finally admitted the only reason he ever went to the Lincoln Center was for the orchestras. Getting on the bus, the trip to Grom was a shorter one than if they had walked.

As Benjamin stepped off, he pointed to the building, and inside they went. He fell into the line before he spoke again.

“So, what do you want? I can get them while you wait by the door. We can eat outside and enjoy the day. Sound fun to you?” It took him a bit to realize there were no tables or chairs in the establishment. It primarily ran on orders made to go.

Athena was already looking at the options in the glass and refrigerated showcase of gelato. With a finger on her chin in thought, she hummed. "That sounds good." She nodded. From behind the counter, there was a young woman who was asking if their orders had been taken already. They were next in line, but she was offering samples that gave Athena a grin.

"Which one's your favorite flavor?" Athena turned to him.

“Stracciatella, with dark chocolate. Not milk.” Benjamin pointed to a white gelato with swirling chunks of chocolate within it. It seemed to be a more traditional style from Italy rather than the more modernized favors of raspberry or mango.

Tapping a finger to her chin in thought, contemplating her choice. When it was their turn, she asked for sample tastes on a few of the flavors and finally settled for one that was coffee-based and cookies. She took a small spoonful of her order and made a noise in the back of her throat indicating her pleasure.

As they stepped up to order, she set aside her order to pull out her wallet.

The clerk smiled then pointed at the card reader, indicating that Athena swiped it when the order was rung up. In a well-practiced phrase, she thanked then gave them a number. 19. It seemed when the monitor’s red numbers changed to it, they could pick up their order. Right now, the order said 16.

Benjamin sighed and then gently pulled Athena to the side while the next customer made their order.

“Coffee and cookies? Really?” he teased.

Athena lightly shrugged, despite the fact he was teasing her. "So sue me, I'm forever a kid at heart," she quipped. "And it's my favorite, ok?"

Benjamin shook his head then looked to the number display. The red number had changed to theirs finally.

“How about you go find us those seats and I’ll bring these out for you?” Casually, he moved to the pickup side of the counter and grabbed the containers. He balanced one in each hand as he carefully avoided others pulling into the pickup section then leaving with their own orders. The place appeared to have gotten packed during their conversation causing him to frown. With a bit of time and awareness, he managed to exit the building. His head turned about to locate Athena.

Athena gave a nod at his suggestion and moved to find a seat. Unfortunately, it was a busy place so it didn't leave very many options. With no seats available, she stepped outside to find a spot outside in the shade that they could take cover. Pulling her hat a little more over her eyes to shade her from the sweltering sun, Athena made do with an alcove just in front of the store and took a seat.

Humming one of her songs, Athena pulled out her phone to begin checking for recent news and emails from her manager. With how engrossed she was in her emails and texts, she didn't notice Benjamin exiting the shop.

Not seeing her, Benjamin closed his eyes. His nostrils flared as he inhaled a deep whiff of the air and twisted his head, catching which direction had been strongest. Every step, he paused and repeated the process. Finally, his eyes caught her toying with her phone in the shade. Rolling his eyes, Benjamin plopped down beside her.

"Athena? Athena, your gelato. Grab it before it melts, or worse mine does!" He stated, the bag bottom rested under his foot and his hand presenting her container to her. His other one held his, placing it in his lap for safekeeping.

Lifting her gaze, her eyes widened to grab a hold of the gelato. Athena set the cellphone in her lap. "Sorry! I was checking my emails and texts from my manager," she explained as she started to take a spoonful of the frozen delight. It's only when she had a spoonful in her mouth did she continue. "Mmm! So good!"

People walked along the sidewalk, moving to and fro about their day that Athena started people-watching as she ate her gelato. "It's kind of nice not to be mobbed by the press," she mumbled.

"I can see that and you were ignoring the world. I had to sniff you out." Benjamin stated. His hand moved his and began to dig in. He savored the taste, both enjoying the gelato and the peace.

The pop idol merely grimaced, not for the fact he had to sniff her out but because she was engrossed in her phone.

"Or horrible dragon ladies. I haven't done this for a while and didn't realize I really missed it. I can not remember the last time I've done something this normal without something shitty happening shortly after."

Athena nodded, listening quietly. There was another spoonful of gelato in her mouth, slowly savoring the frozen delight as the summer heat rose from the sidewalk. The spoon was left there as she listened.

"It sounds like she's been busy keeping you rather occupied doing asinine things then," she said, taking another spoonful of her gelato. "It's a good thing I'm here for a while so I can always just sneak you out of the house."

"Worst part, I wish I could blame her for it. Getting a bit seemed to open a can of worms and normal for me is a fucking joke. Between trying to deal with my own issues, we kept getting dragged into more and more. Finally, when it was done, poof—everyone's gone, leaving me to drown." Benjamin sighed, and then clenched the wooden spoon.

"I am now starting to understand why Duff doesn't trust anyone besides other werewolves. People do not have an instinct that roots them to a pack and make them care. They can simply give you the bird and leave."

As she continued to listen, the wooden spoon stilled in her mouth. Pulling it out partway through what felt to be a vague explanation of what's been happening, Athena dropped her head onto Benjamin's shoulder. She popped another spoonful of gelato into her mouth before speaking.

"Is that why he's so angry?" She hummed thoughtfully. "Sorry I wasn't there to toss you a life preserver—wish I had been." And then sighed. "I didn't know you were in such dire straits, Benjamin. I would've come flying over here if I had known. But, at least you have someone, right? Through all of it? I mean, you have Duff, at least?"

"Duff was kicked from his. He challenged the alpha and lost. Barron introduced me to him afterward, his figure was sickly thin and depression dragging him down. It saved me. We bonded immediately as pack mates and he had been a great help." Benjamin smiled, finishing off his gelato.

Around the moment he finished, Athena did too, setting the spoon into the cup as Benjamin spoke.

"You couldn't have known or likely helped. According to Duff, non-wolves have no instinct that drives them to create pack bonds. Mixed packs are doomed to failure since there have been no recorded successes. But, it doesn't stop me from bonding with others—it's just one-sided." He looked into space, enjoying her head weight on his shoulder. His free hand reached for hers and clasped it in his own, giving it a squeeze. A selfish need for comfort.

Watching his hand reach for hers, Athena couldn't help the small smile. She squeezed back as though in silent promise. "Still, it doesn't change the fact that I wish I could've. It sounds like you went through a lot and it makes me appreciate Duff, even though he seems to see me as a threat."

She squeezed his hand again, setting down the empty gelato cup to the side of her. "Don't get me wrong—I get why since you explained it. But, I guess he's afraid we'll bond? Or at least, you bond to me because if I leave or something, it hurts you, right?" Her voice softened, worry evident in her tone.

"It seems to happen whenever I stick around someone for long enough. And yeah, it would. The best way to describe a bond is like my very existence is centered around you, from your emotions to your presence, and when people leave… my center, my motivation vanishes. I would miss you in the worst possible way."

Benjamin spotted a trash can nearby. Taking his finished container and hers, he tossed them inside alongside the wooden spoons.

"When White Witch left after the hound attack, I didn't have the motivation to live. I just stopped eating, moving, or doing anything. The wolf inside me had given up and… it impacted me."

It was a bond that Athena couldn't understand, but had a vague idea, based on his descriptions. Did the person he bonded with have an idea as to what they were doing when they left Benjamin? The idea of leaving him at all already hurts, but it was probably nothing compared to what he felt.

With her hand in his, the other moved to grasp his arm and squeezed. Athena didn't have a lot of words that she could use that would reassure him.

"I'm here—I know I can't promise a lot, but I want to be here for you." No promises, but this will do. "I'm glad he was there for you to connect so quickly to become pack mates."

Benjamin glanced her way. A softness entered his usually indifferent and distant eyes, seeing her in an appreciative light.

“I didn’t think it would nearly kill me. So you can’t blame me for being worried about it. I’m also the mutt that decided to sniff a gun barrel and it went off in my muzzle. I’m really lucky that werewolves have high regeneration or I might not have a nose now.” Benjamin chuckled at the story that had been retold to him.

Lifting her head to rest her chin on his shoulder, she scrutinized his face. "You're honestly just too curious for your own good sometimes." With that, she released his arm, and with their hands interlinked, she tugged him to his feet. "Come on, let's go—we still have a whole day of stuff to do!"

L O C A T I O N: Somewhere in New York City
T I M E: Present Day ( July ) Sometime around 5 PM

Benjamin shut his bedroom door with his side. He shifted to the dresser drawers as he tugged one after another open. His hand snatched his boxers, jeans, and blue tee shirt into its fist. Wasting little time, Benjamin dropped the blanket. He rushed off to the shower to rinse off the clinging remains. About ten minutes later, Benjamin turned off the water and reached for his nearby towel. Dabbing away the droplets, he stepped out onto the tile.

Wrapping up by yanking on his shirt, he looked at himself in the mirror. He paused long enough to shift his bangs back into place. His hand dropped his towel into the hamper while he walked back into the loft turned game room.

His gaze found Athena on the couch and munching a few of the snacks Emma left for them. Awkwardness filled him, but he didn't let it stop him. A few inhales later; he broke the thickness in the air. He stepped out in front of her, blocking the TV screen while he towered over her.

"We need to talk. How did you know what I was?"

Setting aside the snacks, Athena regarded her best friend as he came out of the bedroom, blocking her view of the television. With a sigh, she rubbed the back of her neck, uncertain of how to address this.

"Do you remember when I told you about the car accident I was in? A few years back, that landed me in the hospital?" she asked.

"Yeah," Ben snitched one of the treats before lowering himself into the seat beside her. His eyes observed her as he took a bite, chewing it slowly.

"When I woke up, I found out I had. .. uhm, well," Athena paused, rubbing her hands on her thighs anxiously, "abilities. And, uhm, sometime before that, I had the pleasure of meeting Morrigan." She waited for the information to sink in.

Benjamin's brow arched. He stopped chewing and swallowed his bite, setting the cookie back on the tray.

“Morrigan? Who's that?" He leaned over the edge of the couch.

Athena looked down at her lap, unable to focus on Ben as she would have preferred, feeling a sense of discomfort for being out of her element. "Someone of the Fae, she took me under her wing when I nursed one of her ravens to health. She was my exposure to the supernatural."

He snapped his fingers, the pieces of the puzzle fitting together in his head. "That explains that scent. You're magical, aren't you?"

Benjamin's demeanor relaxed as he leaned back, resting into the corner of the couch. He watched her, waiting for an answer.

She nodded. "Yes, but the accident—I died, and I know I did." Her voice was soft, clutching her hands together in her lap. She was fiddling with her fingers, trying to stave off nerves and anxiety. She hadn't talked about that day in-depth with anyone else aside from one person.

Benjamin frowned. His mouth went dry, and he swallowed to wet it again, his heart still in his chest. His eyes looked hard at her as if trying to register her words. He looked about to say something but closed his mouth.

Athena fell off of the conversation. She became lost in her thoughts regarding the circumstances that surrounded both her death and her grandfather. For a few minutes, she had forgotten she was even in the same room as her best friend and was instead somewhere else altogether, the realization of what happened a surreal experience that she still hadn't fully come to terms with.

"Oh, uhm, yes," she murmured, shaking her head. Her skin was paler than it had been moments ago, a little disheartened, but she forged forward. "But, after that and while I was recovering, I found out I had—well—gained inhuman abilities that made me different. The doctors said I shouldn't have woken up with the injuries I had, but I did anyway. They can only assume that it was a side effect from coming back from the dead."

Her tone was joking, but there was weight to her words that impressed a seriousness in the subject.

Benjamin rose upright and shifted to the bathroom. He strode with a purpose as he disappeared for a moment. Running water sounded brief before it stopped. With a glass in his hand, he returned and held it out to her. After she took it, he settled back into his seat.

"I'm not sure what to say. Sounds pretty terrible." He wished he could offer condolences, but the time had long passed by. It wouldn't help anymore now.

Barron waited. Hearing the conversation turn from Morrigan to the tragic and rather cliche backstories these heroes seemed to have, and the less Ben thought of Morrigan, the less chance he could pick any unease that Barron would have upon entering the room. Duff, however, was just about to bust down the door if he kept him back any longer, and so, with a smile, he entered.

"Benny boy!! Done with your little chat? Because you made adults worry, and I don't want to bend you over and whoop that ass, but I will if I don't understand WHAT The FU&$ happened to you this past week!!?"

Upon hearing the doorknob click and open, Benjamin's head jerked over to it. His eyes widened then lowered into annoyance. Tension tightened across his jawline, but he bit his tongue against the acidic remark blooming in his head. Benjamin inhaled then exhaled.

“Benjamin. And I'm only just starting to recall that. So take a seat, and I'll address it. It's not like you missed much."

Duff edged around Barron and peered at Benjamin, their eyes locked. Immediately, Benjamin got a flood of what Duff had been through since his departure. They both stiffened, and then relaxed. A confused look snapped onto the older man's features as he dragged his feet to the nearest chair.

Athena started, flinching when the door opened, and two strangers barged into the room. One felt, for all intents and purposes, wrong, and the other felt like Benjamin. Another werewolf? But, what wasn't keeping her focus was the other wolf, but rather, it was the man with a loud voice and a feeling that reminded her of death.

Though a little disconcerted, with practiced ease, she hid her expression and shifted to one of bewilderment. She didn't know who these men were, but they knew Benjamin, and in turn, he knew who they were.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"We're Family," Barron said, chuckling. "That's a lie; however, with his Dad, we might as well be. Name's Barron, Barron Vanderbilt. Not that it probably means anything to a squirt like you unless you gamble. And I'll stand, thank you, goldie."

Benjamin rolled his eyes as he faced Duff to speak.

"On the night I vanished, I had a kid around my age mysteriously appear in my room at the hotel. I don't know what ability he had, but he told me he could reverse what happened to me. I asked him to reverse the wounds and he did. And the next thing I know, he opened a portal and I stepped through it. I wound up here without any memories or anything about turning into a werewolf. I didn't recall until Athena asked me what happened within the last two weeks."

He paused for a breath.

"I wolfed out before you came in. I don't know where the kid went or many details. Everything is still pretty fuzzy."

Benjamin waited to see what Duff and Barron thought. His eyes turned to Athena and gave her a small, apologetic smile.

Athena could only give Benjamin a small smile in return, shifting her gaze to Barron and the other wolf in the chair. He honestly gave her the explanation she needed.

Barron slapped Duff's right arm. "I Fu%^ing knew it. SUPERS, always showing up messing with time and space like it's their business. Give a kid a nuke, and he'll call himself Radiation King or some shit." Then, he turned to Ben with a stern look and continued.

"I'll let Duff work out some punishment. Since he's the one teaching you the ropes and the one that's put in mortal danger. Fu%^, I'll probably need to call Joseph too. Ugh. Well, I'll deal with that later. For now, we'll need to figure something out with this kid you met, should he come back; can't have you finally killing Duff now."

"I didn't plan on this happening. I think I irritated him enough that he won't come back."

"I'm not letting you out of my sight, that's for sure," Duff grumbled as he bared his teeth, his eyes flickering a bright golden. But it faded when he settled back into his chair. Benjamin frowned at spotting Duff's fingers digging into the fabric and slightly ripping it.

"Now that you found me, safe and sound, what happens now? Are Daniel and Lorrie still unaware or…" Benjamin trailed off, letting Duff or Barron explain the details.

"Well, the folks are still blissfully unaware. Perks of being me! However, that kid is still my new priority. Supers love getting involved in places they don't belong, so let the adults worry about that. Also, Duff is your Uncle now. Get used to that since that's what the Maid thinks; she's probably fine in the head. Might need a few more aspirins in the morning, but nothing worse than that."

Athena rose to stand, disliking the feeling of vulnerability of remaining seated. While she might not know what was happening, she needed answers to the myriad of questions. "Excuse me," Athena said with a set line in her shoulders. A determination was etched into the edges of her body, although she knows that she should be wary of the man dressed in clothing that was out-of-time with the current fashion.

"This might sound rude of me since I'm interrupting, but how are all of you connected to Benjamin? What did you do to Emma?"

"Ah, yes, the girlfriend speaks up. Well, this might be a long story, but I'm an interested party to all this, so let's cover the basics. Should we have the maid get some snacks, bloody meat, perhaps? I feel we might be here a while."

Benjamin frowned, though, he noted that Duff's head perked up. His expression soured a bit at that.

She was gaining courage as she continued to speak. "First, I'm not Benjamin's girlfriend. Second, I assumed that I'd be in for a story the moment you two stepped through the door." Taking a deep breath, she crossed her arms. "Please, have a seat, Barron, as it seems that you'll be the one to share the story?" She glanced at Duff in question.

Barron smiled. "I do like talking about myself and my interests. So, sure. Besides, Duff's terrible at storytime."

Reaching for a pastry and grabbing a seat, Barron began talking with crumbs falling from his mouth. "So, I'm a Vampire—the kind who doesn't hate sunlight nor garlic. Though I still think it's disgusting, that's beside the point. I prefer to drain my victims dry—their wallets anyway—hence, I run a rather famous Casino. Ben came to my attention quite some time ago when I first met him and his little group back in New York. Back then, he was still a young pup of a werewolf and out for human flesh, thanks to his runaway Alpha causing mayhem."

"Following thus far, or do I need to explain more? Otherwise, I have a longer bit before Ben comes under my wing, well, Duff's wing."

Benjamin's fingers dug into the arm of the sofa. With an exhale, he remained in place. His protective nature was refusing to let him budge.

Athena nodded, wondering when it was that Benjamin was turned, but she returned to her seat next to him. "I am—please continue." There were parts of the story; she was sure Benjamin could fill in himself, but for now, this will suffice.

"Right," Barron said as he checked his phone for any other updates.

"Where was I? Ah, yes, the crazy Alpha. When he turned Ben and was under his control, the boy was a bit wild. I had some fun beating his flesh-eating hungry ass, but I knew I'd need a more permanent solution at some point. I could use a werewolf or two who owed me a favor as there's always something legal they could do for me.

"So when the boy started losing pack members for one reason or another—life is a complicated bi%^ after all—he started to panic losing his shit too and put himself in the hospital. That's when he met his wolf, Doctor Joseph—a hunter of creatures—and me again! This time, I had an offer he couldn't refuse.

"By pulling some strings, I found a pack that owed me and Duff fit the bill to take Benny in so the boy could finally get himself together. There's always something happening in our supernatural community, and it wouldn't do any good if Ben started munching on people. I do have an ulterior motive—a wolf that can sniff magic is a rare breed, but I'll cash that chip in later.

"I think that covers most of it, everything I know and all that matters. Benny boy here can fill in anything I missed."

With all of that in mind, Athena settled with humming in thought. Indeed, as Barron said, if anything was missing, she could always ask Benjamin himself. Without a glance in his direction, she gently bumped her knee against his in reassurance, leaving it there to be hopefully comforted by a touch of warmth.

"So both of them owe you?" Turning to Duff, she tilted her head slightly in question. "And I suspect I'll be seeing you a lot then." And she nodded again with her hand on her chin in thought.

"Then, are you here to take Benjamin back?"

”Me? No, a kid can do whatever he wants, but his parents will start to wonder where he wandered off. And yes, they do owe me—I stacked the deck, and the House always wins, my dear."

Duff inhaled sharply but didn't say much. He just leaned into the chair and watched Benjamin silently sulk in his seat. Without a word, Benjamin pushed up and hopped over the back end of the sofa. He walked to the bathroom for some water and escape.

Athena can't be surprised about Duff, but Benjamin wasn't old enough to gamble. At least, what she's aware of was the legal age here in the States. But, the deal Barron mentioned might have something to do with that.

"Then, why are you here? You could've found out that he was here without flying all the way here from Vegas if that was your intent of just finding out where he went."

"Adults always manage their problems. And I look after my interests, take care of them, mend any issues before they crop up. Something changed Ben, we know that, and I'm not gonna call it in and half-ass my part. You don't run a business by taking shortcuts—you do it by murdering your competition and ensuring your employees and assets are protected. Speaking of protected..."

Barron sitting back his left arm, draped over the couch as he pondered what would need to be done regarding Ben's parents. "I suppose something will need to be done with the folks, can't have them realizing their son is gone. Perhaps I'll get them tickets to an adult show some comedy act or another after-hours event so they'd have a reason to send their kid back and make it easier to mess with their memories. Anyways, I'll figure that out."

T I M E: Sometime in the Evening

Not to say that he wasn't unused to the idea of going down under and looking for any particular person underground, but with Leila as his partner back somewhere safe, it made the search easier. For someone like him who was supposed to be taking it easy, he didn't seem to be.

"Jai, don't dawdle too long." The voice crackled in the small earpiece in his ear, enhanced and protected by traces of mystic power.

"I wouldn't dream of it," Jai stated dryly.

If he could see the pretty blonde now, he could only imagine she was pouting.

Leila discovered a loosened manhole that was being serviced not too far from the garage. Sending Jai to investigate it as a prospect of where to begin looking for Rach, Jai quirked a brow at the sight. Confirming with Leila the loosened manhole, he noted Rach's overwhelming strength had tossed the metal manhole cover to the nearby building to leave a decent-sized dent. She couldn't have gone far from the garage, reflecting her storming out of the garage, only to come back "different" the next time he saw her.

Donning a sleek black helmet, its HUD sparked to life the moment the air hissed around him while the helmet adjusted to the wearer. A flash of bright blue light peeked from underneath the helmet before it finished its adjustments.

"Load up protocol Alpha Uniform four." He silently dropped down in the darkness below, the rank air washing over him like a fog.

Confirmed.

Before his eyes, his dual-colored gaze watched as the map of the city's entire underground sewer network was spread out before him like a three-dimensional map. The soldier perused over each tunnel and mentally steered the computer to mark off areas that were unlikely for Rach to have ventured into. Tunnels that were under quarantine, out-of-service, or inaccessible were easily marked off of the map. Leila confirmed areas that were no longer in service and were entirely closed off.

If she was running, she'd run in directions that'd be easiest.

But he didn't have to move very far. There were traces of a fight, familiar l.p.black blood lacing the concrete that his gaze narrowed. Rach could handle herself, he knew, but tackling something by herself in a place so narrow was always a gamble. Scuff marks from a creature bigger than what should be in the area gave Jai reason to believe this was "Rach."

Now, what was the easiest place to toss a body from here?

Jai's gaze moved toward the wide hole nearby.

Detecting a heat signature. 7.6 klicks in the southwest tunnels.

Jai prepared for the possible combat should he encounter "Rach," but in retrospect, he imagined that it'd be difficult to lie through his heat sensor since Rach didn't have heat compared to "Rach."

It'd be another ten minutes before he'd get there.

"Leila, heads up," the archer said, having pulled out a communication device from her left pocket. "I've lost contact with the target and he's gone into the sewers. I'm heading down after him, but be ready for him."

"Got it—did you hear that Jai?" Leila asked.

"Affirmative. En route, ten minutes."

Racheli slooshed across waist-high water. Rust, sewage, and salt mingled together in her nostrils. Thankfully her empty stomach had nothing to toss into the putrid mix. She held her breath as she continued toward. The tunnel seemed to pen her in, the walls curving up and forming a funnel. Her head had a dry black scab caked with filth across it. It had already healed, but she didn’t care. It had been ages since she woke up from the fall and no exit in sight.

“Nice going Rach, you’re lost. Wonder how long I’ve been fucking wandering down here.” She snapped at herself.

"Hey, Rach, where are you?"

Her ears caught the voice and froze in place. Several moments clicked by before she began to wade toward it, her mind questioning her sanity. The water sloshed about her waist before it began to lower with each step. Her legs worked against the combination of water and inclining path until the levels reached to about her thighs.

“Is that you, Jai?”

“Is that you, Jai?” Racheli’s voice echoed through the tunnels.

Moving toward the response, Jai continued to move until he was in the near range of Rach.

"Yes, it is," Jai stated, lifting a brow faintly in the direction.

Sensors picking up activity just ahead.

He turned a corner and found himself in a vast cavern after wading through several klicks of murky waters. His helmet was a stark contrast to the rest of his form: covered head to toe in dirt and grime and other unmentionables and his dark olive skin already darker than was normal. The only thing that remained spotless was his helmet.

"Rach." He spoke once he identified the figure ahead of him showed no signs of a heat signature. Jai's helmet hissed open, revealing his dual-colored irises—his blue one gleaming in the darkness. "You look well."

It was uncertain if that was sarcasm or not.

Racheli frowned and her eyes narrowed. She had waded to the center of the sewage water before she stopped in her tracks, locating the origins of the voice. Already the hairs on her neck rose causing her posture to become defensive. She stepped back, unsure if this was the real Jai or a copy.

“How did you know I was down here?” Her voice asked in a firm fashion.

"Unless there is someone else I know with the strength to lift a manhole cover and chuck it several feet away from the hole, we can only guess," he stated dryly. Her apprehension was noted. His blue eye blinked several times, switching between his alternate visions to verify that it was indeed Rach.

"If I didn't know any better, it almost looks like you came down here for an adventure and got lost," he said, the helmet hissing back closed again. When it did, a thin pulse of orange light shimmered across its surface like an electronic circuit board. "I take it that there are gators down here?"

If he recalled how the saying goes right.

“If you’re being sarcastic, now isn’t the time. I’ve already been attacked by a duplicate of myself and got tossed down here. For all I know, you’re not who you say you are…” Racheli stated as she began to pull back, wading deeper into the water.

He lifted a brow, though he was aware that Rach wouldn't be able to see beyond the shade of the helmet. "I visit the graveyard on occasion, and once, I saw you put down a rose. A black one, specifically."

Silence settled in the air, but finally, she let out an exhale of relief.

“For fuck’s sake, I wanna out of here. Where’s the exit?” Racheli asked, trudging closer and finally toward the shallow end.

“I don’t want to be here when he comes back.”

There'd be traces of a smile if she could see beyond Jai's helmet. "It's several klicks in that direction," he said with his head gesturing in that direction. He paused, stilling when his sensors picked up another heat source.

Heat signature approaching in three minutes.

"Here," he said, offering a hand to help Rach trudge through the too thick water. "You look like you've been through some sort of time if I'm saying that correctly."

Rach was too tired to brush his help aside as she took the offered hand.

“How would you feel being tossed down a sewer drain and lost for who knows how long? I feel as bad as I smell. When we get out, I’m in need of a long hot shower.”

Jai idly shrugged. "There are always worse situations," he remarked, his voice coming in clear through the helmet as though he wasn't wearing one at all. "But, a shower is always nice—especially after a long mission or in this case, a very long... adventure."

He helped her trudge through the waters, heading in the direction of the exit that his helmet marked for him on the map.

"You look well enough, in spite of it though." In spite of what he could only assume was anger for being lost down here.

“I assume he thought he killed me. Or was aiming to finish me off later. Asshole seemed rather pissed at seeing me.” Racheli’s foot misstepped. The ankle jerked to the side and she jerked up, her balance tilted to the left. She leaned heavily on Jai to keep herself upright.

“Fuck! I hate this damn place!”

His grip on her was stable, and his other hand shot out to steady Rach when she misstepped. Leaning against him, he adjusted himself to better accommodate before helping her upright again. "We'll be out soon," Jai said in what could be considered a reassuring tone. "At least, you were easy enough to find so you can be out sooner."

“For now, but asshole is still out there. There’s no telling what damage he did.” Racheli growled as she continued to walk, eager to get out of here.

Heat signature approximately five meters behind Racheli.

Though she was unable to see or detect as Jai could, his dual-colored irises focused on the two gleaming red eyes lurking in the deeper parts of the water. As though realizing something, the eyes disappeared and left.

Heat signature departing…

With a mental note, he added that the helmet calibrates to memorize the heartbeat and body signature of the departing enemy.

Another day.

"I hope not more than what I can only assume. Leila has been worried about you—she's going to want to make sure nothing invasive or bad happened to you." Jai slowly led her away from the heat signature and toward the exit at long last.

“Personally, I would rather avoid a check-up. That’s not the type of poking I would enjoy. I doubt I’ll get sick from shit and piss.” Racheli grumbled.

Within a few minutes, the light from the manhole could be seen.

*italics in dialogue means it's spoken in either Chinese or Korean

Athena flashed a smile. "Of course! Thanks, ajumma." She leaned forward to press a kiss to the woman's cheek before grabbing her bag and following after Benjamin. As they left the kitchen and made their way through the mansion, Athena's smile waned when she noticed the decorations had drastically changed since she was last here.

"I hope she didn't touch your room," she mumbled. Athena puffed her cheek as she tried to ignore the childish protest in the lack of Ben's mom's things and was heartbroken when they passed the living room to find the grand piano gone.

Her hands gripped her bag tightly, trying to fight the grief and the lack of respect for her things no longer being where they used to sit. It's only been a few years since she was here, but for it to change so much.

"I can see why you call her 'dragon lady,'" Athena said after a moment, just before they headed in the direction of Benjamin's room.

"She tried to, but I crushed her attempt. I don't think Daniel wanted us to spill blood on the carpet." Benjamin growled at the thought as he led the way.

"I feel like a snake would be a better fit for her," Athena remarked, "just because a dragon seems too cool for her."

They walked through the foyer again then to the study and finally up the stairs. Benjamin walked into the middle of the loft before he turned his head over his shoulder.

"I've changed a few things since you last visited. Including adding a gym area. The storage is to the right if you want to put your bag in there for now."

He pointed at the set of doors across the room from the stairs.

Athena nodded and glanced in the pointed direction. She made to move to set her bag down; instead, she just held onto it until they decided where to settle down. Looking around, she opted to walk to the game room where she could see the large television and various gaming consoles set up beneath it.

"So, you want to play some games while we wait for Emma to bring the snacks up? The other option is telling me what you've been up. The last visit was about two years ago."

Tapping her chin in thought, she hummed. "Let's catch-up over foosball. Every time you or I score a point, we can ask each other a question."

Benjamin waved his hand for her to follow him past the storage closet and into the hallway. They passed two rooms before entering the game room. Benjamin slipped off his shoes then tossed them against the nearby wall. He moved past the couch and began to check the condition of the table, ensuring it worked adequately.

She set down her bag on the couch that faced the television. Following Benjamin, she removed her shoes and set them beside the sofa. And then, Athena headed over to the table while she loosened her shoulders. She grinned. "Prepared to get your butt whooped, Benjamin?"

"That's big talk for Ms. Shorty. I'm surprised you haven't tripped over those heels on the way up." Benjamin snickered.

She crossed her arms as she made her way over to the foosball table. "Aigoo, we're almost the same height!" Athena puffed out her cheek in a mock pout, her long black hair swaying behind her. "And besides, I bet your balance is terrible if you tried wearing them."

"Thankfully, guys don't need to wear heels to be tall. And I'm pretty sure I would break them rather than run in them. The brand you're wearing isn't known for being durable."

Athena shrugged. Leave it to Ben to know the brand and its known durability. "Then I'll walk barefoot if I have to. Or you know, break the heel off and use it as a lethal weapon." She couldn't help laughing.

Benjamin pulled a coin from a nearby coffee table.

“No one can say you’re not feisty at least. Flip for who goes first. Heads or tails?"

Eyeing him, she hummed again. "Heads."

Benjamin adjusted the coin then flipped it high in the air. The silver glistened as it twirled and came back to his hand, his palm out to catch it. He slapped it down on the back of his hand.

Heads.

"You're first." He tossed the coin to the side as he hunched over his side of the table.

Rolling up the sleeves of her shirt, she punted the ball into the center and kicked it close to Ben's side. After a few bounces back and forth, twirling of handles and the like, Ben still scored the first point.

Athena made a noise that was a mix of a groan and a squeak.

"You scored first… what's your first question?" she asked with a sigh as she moved to retrieve the ping pong ball.

"Don't feel bad, I've had plenty of time to practice," Benjamin said in a soft voice.

Even with his reassurance, Athena pouted. That just meant he was going to score a lot of points off of her. And that meant a lot of questions.

His face turned serious as he spoke again.

"So... Why now did you decide to visit? You can't tell me you haven't come this way a few times before. I mean, you're pretty popular after all."

"I was originally headed for Lost Haven," Athena replied, holding the ball in hand as she stood. "My manager said it was a better idea not to go somewhere that was already hot with the press and put me somewhere I could blend in with the crowd." She shrugged in resignation with a shake of her head. "Hiding in plain sight, so to speak."

Setting the ball in the center, she flashed a smile. "I think my manager remembered I grew up here, at one point, and wanted me to come back to relax. So, a perfect time for me to see you. And besides, didn't you miss me?"

"I did. I wish you had more free time. It's a good thing you didn't go to Lost Haven. It's..." Benjamin paused for a moment.

His lips curled into a frown as he seemed to have lost his train of thought. It took a few seconds, but he recovered and cast away the strange feeling.

"I can't recall, but it's not a good place. It seems to be a hot spot of some sort."

Athena tilted her head, puzzled. He seemed to have recovered, but, Something seemed missing, and his answer felt like he knew what he wanted to say before whatever thought he had disappeared. How strange. No wonder Morrigan sent her. Something settled uncomfortably in the pit of her stomach, but she clung to the conversation she had, once upon a time.

He pointed to the table. "Want to continue?"

She nodded and set the ball in the center. After a huge back and forth, Athena lost again by a close battle between the two to her far left. With a groan, she held her head with a sigh. "I should've picked Mario Kart. I forget how good you are at this."

Ben laughed when she mentioned she should've picked Mario Kart.

"I did warn you I've been practicing. So, what're your least favorite parts about being a popstar? I know you got some aside from the paparazzi."

Athena frowned. "Probably how intrusive they can get about my personal life, especially since I started on this movie." She sighed. "I wasn't known for any other roles before this movie, so everyone wants to know who I am and where I've come from. But, it's not like I've hidden the truth too much on those."

They know a myriad of random facts about her. It was peculiar to see a magazine with a profile of her inside it. And it was bewildering.

She picked up the ball again and posed as if she was about to drop the ball again. "And here, in the States, in Hollywood, they get… aggressive." She winced as if remembering something she didn't like. "Anyway, ready for the next round?"

"Everyone wants to know what it's like to be wealthy or famous. Few people realize what we give up because of it. Privacy. It's a sad truth of life." Benjamin resisted the urge to lament about the loss of such a precious thing.

Lifting her gaze to her friend, she nodded, remembering how little they were exposed to paparazzi differently than how she was exposed to it now.

He smirked, trying to change the topic to something more cheerful, "Though I admit, I'm lucky to know you as I do."

Athena couldn't help the curling of her lips, grateful for both his friendship and sincerity.

His attention turned back to her as he readied himself for another round. "Oh hell yeah. I'm ready to kick your butt again."

And then immediately pouted. "Aigoo! You're not going to win all the time! I'll score points, you watch!" She stomped her foot in frustration. Her eyes flashed; briefly, a luminescent blue-green just from the inner edges of her pupils twinkled.

And a shadow passed over Ben's head.

Ben's eyes jerked up just when he was about to defend his goal. For a moment, something sweet and spicy hit his nose. It twitched before his attention drifted back to Athena. For a moment, the confusion increased as he tried to understand what happened.

Distracted, she took the opportunity to swoop in and kicked the ball into his goal, scoring a point for herself. She made an incomprehensible noise of jubilation.

"Did you see that?"

"See what?" she asked, blinking up at him. "Did you see something?"

Benjamin frowned and thought about it. He bit his lip then shrugged it off.

"I thought I saw a shadow. Maybe I've been working out too hard."

Athena blinked at him as if she had no idea what he was talking about.

His eyes looked down and noticed the pong ball vanished. He clicked his tongue on his teeth, accepting his defeat.

"I guess you won, so ask your question."

And then she grinned. "I sure did!" Tapping a finger to her chin in thought, she hummed. Well, she wanted to find out what he was doing recently. Perhaps she ought to find out what he's been up to since they last talked.

"What were you doing for the last two-ish weeks since we talked? You and I both got so busy, we hardly called or sent texts that I got worried. You doing okay?" Her voice softened in that way that showed her concern.

Athena didn't want to believe he holed himself up here the whole time. But, with what Morrigan told her, he was in Las Vegas and unfortunately, that's not information he told her himself. Instead, her genuine concern that he had to face the snake woman by himself for three weeks of summer vacation seemed highly unlikely, but still possible.

Benjamin had leaned over and began to collect the ball when he paused again. His mind tried to think to yesterday, but nothing surfaced in his recollection — not even the boring stuff.

His figure stood upright as he pushed against the table's edge, trying to recall details. He crossed his arms while the throbbing increased.

"I-I..."

"Ben?" Athena called out softly, frowning.

The blood rushed to Benjamin's head, the thumping drowned out his hearing. His mind ignored the pain in its search for answers. Images of a wolf biting him flashed through his mind, a woman in a coffin, and followed by numerous other unfamiliar faces.

His eyes began to yellow before the sounds of bones cracking filled the room.

The change in his eyes didn't stop Athena from squeaking in surprise at how she provoked his change.

Footsteps were coming up the steps, Emma's familiar humming echoing up the halls. The sounds didn't sound right together—his bones cracking as fast as she could move to slam the door shut, Emma's humming, and her feet padding on the hardwood floor. She skidded, slipped with practiced ease to kick the door shut, and muting the sound so Emma wouldn't hear it slam closed. It was as though she choreographed it and pressed her feet against it in time to stop Emma from seeing the transformation.

"Oh, Ben…" she breathed as she looked upside down toward him.

There were sounds from the other side of the door amid the cracking of bones and then the knock. If Athena weren't so close to the door, she would've missed the knocking. The knock came louder.

Athena made her voice sound like she was yelling from the couch, "One second! Just leave it by the door!"

On the other side of the door, Emma frowned. Her hands were holding the tray filled with the various treats, including the rustic tart and numerous cookies. And of course, macarons.

“Are you sure? Are you two all right? What’s that cracking sound?”

"Yeah! We're—" Athena didn't like lying on a bad day, and even on a good day, she still didn't like lying. But lying in this case… well… She winced, swallowing her moral compass for Ben as she continued, "—we're watching a movie! So everything's dark! Give us a sec!" She tried to make sounds that sounded as though they were moving around in the dark, looking for the remote amid the cracking bones.

Ben's heart kept pounding and rushing blood through his veins. His figure fell onto the floor. Small shreds of skin began to peel from his muscle where blonde fur began to show. His height increased as his back legs distorted into something more wolfish in nature. A long snout extended from his skull, his nostrils caught the blanket of scents.

As the transformation drew to an end, Benjamin lifted upright. His gaze fixed on Athena as his black lip curled back and a warning snarl escaped through his teeth.

The cracking of bones finally stopped that she lifted her chin up to look at him upside down again. Well, the sound of a body falling to the ground hadn't been something she liked hearing ( or at all, for that matter, when she could feel it through the floor ), but he was breathing.

Listening through the door, she heard Emma shuffle, as though she was hesitant, and then the familiar sound of a tray was set down on the ground and heard her departing.

Her dark eyes connected with his, and she shifted slowly to sit up, hands on the floor and twisting, so her legs still faced the door as she watched him from where she sat. Her heartbeat rapidly against her chest from the rush and her eyes wide with breathless surprise.

"Ben?" Her voice was soft, concern evident on her features, but filled with wondrous curiosity to his changes. It's the first time she had seen him transform, and there weren't words to describe it. ( Other than startling cause that scared the daylights out of her. )

Benjamin growled deeper. His tail confidently held as he lowered his front half, dropping to all fours. He moved cautiously around the foosball table toward the door. The whites of his teeth flickered through his lips on display to her. His muscles rippled under the spiked blonde fur while he drew closer and closer to Athena. Tension laced his frame, but it didn't hinder his movements.

She couldn't breathe. Or at least, felt like she couldn't when she watched Ben approach her. She was wary, but this was Ben, right? Athena didn't move, but her body twitched with the urge to do just that.

"Ben—?" She tentatively tried again.

For several seconds, the werewolf stood just inches from Athena's face. The air seemed to be thick with irritation and aggression. Without much warning, his jaw opened.

A long purplish tongue slipped out then began to lick Athena's face.

And she blinked in surprise, squeaking her surprise when his tongue licked her.

His tail thumped back and forth as he whimpered in happiness. The wolf's head pressed up against her cheek, and his front lowered before it bounced back up. It was obvious he was happy to see her.

With his head pressed against her cheek, she giggled, wrapping her arms around his snout as she reached for behind his ears, scratching. "Oh, that's a good boy," she cooed. She moved to stand so that she was more at his height, though, even with him dropped on all fours, and he was massive.

"And you're beautiful," she murmured, rubbing and running her fingers through his fur. "And soft! Hehe!"

Benjamin just took affection. Absorbed it like a sponge as he panted, his tail still whipping back and forth. It smacked the foosball table, but Ben didn't seem to notice. As Athena's fingers brushed through his soft fur, he flopped over to his side and stretched out. He appeared to be complete bliss.

After several long and drawn out minutes ( make that about fifteen minutes of her simply loving on him, actually… ) of Athena essentially giving wolf Benjamin a rub and a brush through with her fingers, the idol rested her chin on him and looked over at him, recognizing the look of intelligence behind those eyes.

"A werewolf, hm? I wonder how long you've been hiding this from me—I'm hurt," she said, scratching behind his ears. Her voice softened. "Dàn wǒ xīwàng nǐ néng gàosù wǒ..." Shaking her head, she sighed.

"Okay, wǒ de qīn'ài de péngyǒu, time for you to change back because I don't think I can hide you while you're like this and Emma is gonna be coming back up again soon for supper. And I got nothing that can hide you like this." Athena helplessly shrugged, moving to rub his head now.

Benjamin tilted his head, showing confusion, appearing lost at her word. His eyes closed while he enjoyed the rubbings on his head before he began to shift upright. He inhaled then exhaled, his body completely still.

Once more, bones cracked and fur fell off. Ben's transformation reversed until a naked Benjamin stood on all fours before her.

Athena tried her best not to scream. The moment her hands and arms were on the skin instead of fur, she knew. Swearing in all the languages she knew, wishing he had warned her before he straight up just changed back while she was on top of him.

His eyes opened but didn't look her way.

Instead, she squeaked, jumping off of him when he stopped.

"Ummm... Athena, can you look away and get me the blanket off the couch? Please..."

She tried to fight the blush from coming to her cheeks, but it came anyway. "S-Sure!" Athena squeaked. She shuffled away to the couch, pulled off the blanket, and kept her gaze locked to the floor when she made her way over to hand it off to him. It's when he's appropriately covered himself that she lifted her gaze.

Okay, that's going to take some getting used to, she thought.

"You're cuter as a werewolf, you know," she said with a raised brow. It's her attempt at trying to diffuse the awkwardness of Benjamin being naked only moments ago. But, her blushing cheeks were fading as she tried to focus on anything else.

Benjamin chuckled. "Yeah... Someone else thought so too."

His humor died off at the end, despite his attempt to hide it.

Let her dig a hole and stay there. Or the ground swallowing her whole would be okay, too. Something was off, and she just stepped into it.

He coughed and decided to move on. His hands secured the blanket to his hips, moving it slightly where he could grip the fold. It wasn't the best coverage, but he didn't want to walk around naked in front of his best friend. Especially a female one.

"Anyways. Hi... I'm still hazy on the details, but I'm sorry about this. If you could let me dressed properly?"

He didn't wait for her reply as he slipped past, beelining for the door.

Athena didn't watch him leave, instead, decided to take a deep breath, blowing some of her hair out of her face and sighed. Moving to the door, she opened it and picked up the tray of goodies left by Emma and then closed the door behind her. She set the tray down on the coffee table in front of the couch, picked up a macaron, and plopped down on the couch.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

A young woman with spunk and energy in every step she takes, "Athena" is a go-lucky and cheerful individual who thrives on interaction and living in the moment. At first glance, one would think her nothing more than a young woman who should be living the dream in a university of her choosing. She's polite, friendly, and warm-hearted to those she meets. Often, she tries her best to include those she encounters in the conversation or make them feel welcomed, depending on the situation.
She's compassionate, loyal, kind, and very comforting to her friends. She's willing to go the extra mile for them, no matter how far that mile is, and she's stubborn enough to go for it. And with that, she's adventurous and is willing to do all sorts of things with her friends: whether it's sports, games, video games, or traveling. Even without them, Athena tends to forge her path so that she may explore and better understand the world around her in the way of gaining knowledge and experience.
With such energy, she pours herself into her dancing and singing, and whenever she's able, her focus in bettering her knowledge in medicine. She's passionate about the field and is often very excitable because of it. Due to her friendly demeanor, she makes quick friends with people regardless of their differences. And because of her natural curiosity with the world and how it works, she is genuinely interested in the conversations she makes with people. This part of her made her popular with her fans and said the number of them only continues to grow.
However, with such friendly mannerisms, it may appear to many that she's naive, and this can cause certain people to be somewhat judgmental. She is loyal to a near-fault once her trust is earned, and is willing to fight for those she deems her friends. She values sincerity and truthfulness and in turn, often likes speaking the truth as frequently as possible.
Despite her age, she's cautious in her words and is eloquent. With her sunny disposition, it's hard to imagine her that she has any troubles of her own when she acts and seems relatively carefree. She's a little guarded of herself and doesn't tend to share too much of herself. (To a point.) While she'll be open about her experiences and relatable topics when the situation calls for it, she tends to withdraw when it comes to talking about her past. This trait tends to lead to her bottling a lot of her emotions in until she explodes or finally has a mental breakdown.

UNIFORM:
She wears a hoodie (of varying colors of black and grey) with a recognizable pair of wings on her back and a matching baseball cap to help cover her eyes regardless of the time of day. Coupled with a matching face mask that covers her mouth with a slight voice-altering mechanic. Underneath the sweater/hoodie itself, she wears durable pants and boots to help her traverse without worrying for wear and tear.

O R I G I N

Athena was born very fortunate, with an innate desire for both knowledge and wonder. Coming from a family of wealth on her father's side, she had no limitations of what she wanted to do with her life. Her father was one of the board members of a large company well known for the import and exports of goods, among a variety of other odd successful business ventures. Under the CEO, the company known as Reid Industries was the company he served.
Her mother was from an old family line known for their herbal remedies and medicines, giving Athena the knowledge she has today. While her mother's business was very successful—starting from the late 1800s to the present day—the company never went beyond several chains in a few cities. It was only when her mother met her father that they decided to expand the business and try to sell the herbal remedies into other countries.
Athena grew up with an older brother under very lax care, her parents distant as they focused on their companies and giving her to caretakers to care for her. Her parents' ventures into business left Athena with the freedom to explore all avenues of her interests from ballet to music to martial arts to academic studies. No matter what Athena did, however, her parents never really looked at their daughter or her accomplishments. Their primary focus was on her older brother, nicknamed Ares, who was set to take after her father. Though she knew that her parents loved and genuinely cared for her, her grandparents and her older brother were the ones that eventually started to care for her. Though, she did bond with her mother whenever she had the chance. When her mother brought her to visit her grandparents' herb shop, they talked about herbs and medicinal plants. It was through their mutual love of the plants that they genuinely bonded.
Over time, her grandparents were grooming her to be the one to one day lead their small company. But, Athena wanted more in life and discovered her near insatiable hunger for knowledge. That need for knowledge was quenched by her brother when he began to study for school earnestly. Through that, they both shared an interest in academia and what the world has to offer.
Eventually, when Athena turned fifteen, on a whim, decided to audition for a part in a girls' pop group. To her surprise, she was selected and joined a K-Pop idol group. On top of that, her parents approved of it and let her join. By doing so, they hoped that the experience would better educate her on what life had to offer her. Athena had never been busier or happier in her life. In a strange turn of events, Athena was finding her place in life as an idol while balancing her family and personal desire to learn.
When she turned sixteen, however, this started to go downhill. While on a trip with her grandparents into the country for some R&R, she got into a car accident. It should've killed her. Instead, it left her in a coma for a week. Her grandmother became paralyzed and was in critical care while her grandfather took the brunt of the damage and had died. The doctor explained to both her parents and her brother that Athena had technically, for all intents and purposes, died. During her coma, she was a "vegetable" that showed little to no response aside from the beating of her heart. But then, at the end of the week, she woke up as though nothing had happened.
However, to Athena, things had changed from that day forward.
Thanks to her brush with death, her family became overprotective and worrisome about both her and her grandmother. After mourning the death of her grandfather, she was given numerous get well letters and presents from her fans wishing her well. It was through this that Athena decided to continue her work through other means when her manager suggested she try acting.
By the time she reached eighteen, Athena had become an accomplished teenage actress with one successful and top-rated movie under her belt and another in the works. However, due to recent events of her recent movie, the movie was put on hold to recover from it. And now, the paparazzi was dying to find out the reasons behind the delay in filming. Athena's manager decided to send her to Lost Haven to recover and hopefully help her hide from the world of Hollywood...

HERO TYPE:
Mystic / Energy.

POWER LEVEL:
Street Level (Presently). Eventually: Cosmic

P O W E R S

✦ Understanding Qi and Qigong / Life Energies - From a young age, Athena was taught and understood quickly that there's a life force that drives people and everything is made up of them. Because of this, she understands everything is connected and uses this knowledge to help with those she helps heal.
★ Intellectual Ability - She's born with the mental capacity for absorbing information. She's good at the memory and learning that this lends to her capable of conversing on intelligent subjects. With this capacity of memory, she's able to learn several languages on top of everything.
✦ Animate Objects - Temporarily, Athena is able to animate non-magical objects no bigger than, roughly, her size. Anything bigger, she struggles and loses her ability to do so over long periods and can exhaust her. However, the smaller she animates things, the easier it is for her to manipulate. At the current moment, she can animate three medium dog sized objects and double that number the smaller the object. The length at which she can manipulate the objects depends on her levels of exhaustion and mental fortitude.
★ Cellular Manipulation - When she touches someone, she's able to see the life energies of their bodies, and in turn, their body cells and can manipulate them for proper regeneration of their bodies. It leaves no scarring when she does this, and the body feels as though it has renewed its lifecycle. Think 3D printing organs, and that's what Athena does. By taking the cells of other parts of the body, she duplicates them by harnessing the energy and power around her. Then, she changes their basic cell structure to become the organ she needs them to become.
✦ Energy and Life Manipulation - The core of her abilities and powers—Athena is skilled in manipulating life and being what life is. After her meeting with death, she's able to harness and use the energy around herself to her benefit. However, she was only allowed to use it in healing and helping the creatures and people around her. If there's anything like a soul, she can see them and perhaps, even "understand" them without actually talking to them.
★ Regeneration - With the awakening of her abilities, Athena has obtained the ability to rapidly regenerate. However, this will slow depending on her focus. If she focuses on another to help heal them, then her own recovery will slow down to compensate. Alternatively, if she hasn't properly taken care of herself, her regeneration will also slow down to preserve energy. The only thing that can't be slowed or hinder her is that she can't be chemically invaded that would inhibit her motor skills.

★ Being Human - She's only human and generally has all the weaknesses that a human ought to have.
✦ Magic - Just because she's adept at the healing capabilities that she's gained, doesn't mean she knows how to defend herself against the other powers of the mystic arts. Though she's capable of defending herself to a point, she's not the sort of user that's capable of defending against the elements or against people who excel in combative situations.
★ Paparazzi - Athena is famous all over the world as a renowned singer, dancer, and actress with a huge following over ten million fans. Because of this, she's often worried about her public image and tries to keep to a certain personality type of cheeriness and friendliness.

S U P P O R T I N G C H A R A C T E R S

✦ Ares Lin - Athena's older brother of three years. He's currently going to university studying business and biology. Athena was brilliant in terms of academia and people; her brother was the same. Capable of multitasking between his two majors and of succeeding in school, he hopes to one day surpass their father. Despite how busy he is, Ares is always consistently shown an overprotective nature over his little sister and deeply cares for her welfare.
★ Mei Lee - Athena's manager. She handles all of Athena's work and performances throughout her career. She's the one that scouted Athena and has been with her since the beginning. A woman of short stature and a comely appearance has a surprising fiery temper. It makes Mei a woman not to be messed with when it comes to Athena and her faith in her and her work.
✦ Jayden Kim - Her bodyguard that's surprisingly not someone that's able to be noticed from the get-go. He has stylized black hair with near handsome-ish Asian features that's pleasant to look at, but not enough for him to overtly ogle. His age is about his late thirties. He views Athena like a sister he never had, and he's watched over her since she started her career as an idol and actress.

L O C A T I O N: Somewhere in Hollywood, California
T I M E: Present Day ( July ) — a little past midnight

*italics denotes dialogue spoken in either Chinese or Korean

The weather was shining, overwhelmingly hot, and without signs of relief in the middle of July. With the cars blaring their horns as if they had a right to go first, traffic was incessant and nothing would stop them from rushing to their next location. All in all, it was a busy day, like any other typical day.

The news was displaying news coverage was talking about the recent events that happened in a city called Lost Haven. A young woman lifted her head from looking down at her phone, her face mask and sun hat covering her features from being recognized while she wore an inconspicuous outfit. It was a plain loosely knitted cream colored sweater that revealed her shoulder with a white cami underneath and washed out light blue jeans and white sneakers. There was a small black bag slung over her shoulder as she sat waiting for her flight, blinking at the news.

"I hope that's not—"

Footsteps approached her and her bodyguard shook his head as he sat down beside her. "Looks like Mei's plan to travel to Lost Haven backfired," he said in Korean.

Her eyes turn to him. "Why? Where are we going now?"

"We're going to New York for a while—said it's safer there. Plus, the news media will think you've gone to Lost Haven so they won't know to follow you to New York."

The woman turned her attention back to the phone. Well, that shouldn't be so bad then. If she remembered correctly, a few of her friends should be there. But then, she wondered if they remembered her.

Nodding her head at the bodyguard, she waited for them to be called into the plane.

L O C A T I O N: Somewhere from the Kennedy Airport to an apartment in NYC
T I M E: Present Day ( July ) — about 6 - 7 AM

When her plane landed and she was walking through the tunnel that attached itself to the plain, she peeked out of the small windows to spot a black crow sitting on one of the workers' golf carts. With another blink, it flew off and see quickly turned her head to follow after her bodyguard.

The lights and the traffic didn't feel any different than how it was in Hollywood, the car horns blaring and the lights flickering with advertisements and the news. By the time she arrived at the apartment that her manager, Mei, bad leased for her under her brother's name, Athena was finally able to take off her face mask and hat.

Looking around, it was furnished with a contemporary style of a modern aesthetic. Hm, looks like her brother had a hand in decorating. But, looking around one of the few personal items that littered the apartment was in her room: a small picture frame no larger than the size of her hand and an envelope with her name on it. When she picked up the envelope, she heard Jayden tell her to get some rest and that he'll be back with some breakfast after he had made sure to check out the rest of the apartment. When the sound of the door closed, and it's lock echoing throughout the apartment, she set down the envelope and went into the kitchen.

She pulled out a ceramic bowl, big enough to see her reflection and set it down in her room's sitting table. She went looking for the small bag of supplies she requested of her brother to provide and found it in her bathroom under the sink. Once she perused the contents, she left to head back. It was only after she drew the curtains, she pulled out some Raven feathers, a braided Celtic knot of mugwort, yew, and Willow, and arranged three small scented candles around the bowl in places of what would be north, west, and east. After placing the Raven feathers inside the bowl, she gathered the knot in hand and began to focus. Normally, she'd decorate with some Jasmines and some other things but with this not being her home, she wanted to gather everything else over time.

"It's time for some fun and games; after all, what's life without a little bit of chaos?" she called out.

The water began to swirl and soon, it wasn't her reflection anymore, but another—an elderly woman that bore red eyes and a tattoo by her eye. Unassuming and perhaps even plain, there was nothing about her that spoke of something… extraordinary.

"Hello, Morrigan, Athena here, reporting and checking in," she greeted with a smile. Tapping the bowl, she checked to see if the connection went through. "I hope the connection is coming in clear?"

The elderly woman flinched at the tapping. Her red eyes took on a scolding expression as she frowned.

"Please dear, don't tap on the bowl. I like my hearing undamaged..." The Morrigan's voice spoke in a reprimanding tone.

"Oh, sorry."

The voice wavered with the ripples of the water causing a small distortion. When they settled, the older woman continued.

"My sources told me you're in New York City instead of Lost Haven. A little change in travel plans?" Amusement crept into her words for a moment, then vanished when she moved on.

And the only thing Athena could do was helplessly shrug.

"Since you're in that area, I do have a task for you. I hope you can clear your schedule for it."

Tilting her head and tapping a finger to her chin in thought, Athena hummed and nodded. "I'm supposed to be here to get some R&R so my schedule is pretty open, for now." It's been a while since Morrigan had given her a task. "What can I do for you?"

"Do you recall Benjamin Reeves?" Morrigan asked.

There's the recognition that flashed through her eyes, it's movement flickering around the bowl as she looked for the familiar figure. "What about Ben? Why? Did something happen to him?" Concern colored her tone.

"Deary, pay attention to me. It's not that Ben. It's the other one."

Athena sighed a breath of relief, briefly but the frown remained.

Her hand rose and a blackbird fluttered onto it. Morrigan lowered it to her lap where she began to pet it, its feathers wafted off dark magic with each touch. She continued the conversation in a calm voice.

“Well, there’s been a few complications. My little friend," she paused to show the creature, then lowered her hand again, "Has found him in New York City. How he got from Las Vegas to New York is a mystery, but I'm hoping you can figure it out. You will keep close to him and keep him safe."

The idol hummed thoughtfully, wondering if there was another power at hand. If Morrigan didn't know…

What caught her attention, however, was the fact that Ben was in the same city. Her best friend, Ben. A rare occurrence, certainly, but not unwelcome. That simply meant it was time for her to catch up.

"I can do that, yes," Athena started slowly. And then she shifted in her seat, tapping a finger to the table. "Is that all you'll have me do? Is there anything else I should know before I go into all of this?"

"Yes, and check-in with me over his progress. Remember he can't know anything about his future. As for where he lives, I don't believe he's moved. So he should be easy to find." Morrigan took a tanker and took a long draft.

Athena slowly nodded, conflict flashing behind dark eyes.

Morrigan inhaled after the drink then raised her hands.

"Now, get to work. If I think of anything else, I’ll send a crow."

And then the conflict was gone as if she remembered something. "Will do. Until next time then, Morrigan." And she made a genuine smile and a little wave.

Morrigan shook her head. Her image faded, becoming more shadow until it completely vanished.

With Morrigan gone, Athena leaned back in her seat and stretched. She glanced back at the clock and with a hum, noted it's a little after 7 AM. Cleaning up the ingredients and focus, she set them aside and returned them to their appropriate places with naught a trace. With a yawn, feeling the jet lag and exhaustion from her lack of sleep on the plane, she began to prepare for bed. As she did so, she pulled out her cellphone and skimmed through her recent contacts to find Benjamin's. Ah, the recent scandal had left their recent messages back a little over three weeks ago. Even without Morrigan's instructions, she would've gone to see Ben anyway. But now, it had a purpose and she had to stop beating herself up for the decision.

[sms; 7:39 AM] to: Best Boy, Ben
Hey, Benjamin! Guess where I am?

She grinned, satisfied with her message, and proceeded to head to bed.

More often indifferent than any other kind of characteristic, he is a soldier at heart and that makes it difficult for him to open up to people. He usually analyzes those he meets first from their physical appearance to their body language and immediately gains an understanding of them from a glance. In a way, he resembles Sherlock Holmes for his memory and first-time impressions of those he meets and is observant of his surroundings given his upbringing in the military.
Otherwise, to those he considers comrades and brothers-in-arms, he is quite the individual with a knack for tinkering with a variety of toys, gadgets, and guns for his friends. Sometimes, his rather loner personality has him working in the garage from a variety of cars whether it is the classic 1976 Cobra Mustang to the brand new and age sports car of the 2015 Ferarri FF. Sometimes, if not cars, he works on motorcycles. Because of his interest in motor vehicles, he often makes friends by means of possible frustration toward putting together a car or figuring out the problems a car/motorcycle may have.
However, he is loyal to a fault and is willing to fight for those he considers worthy. (Like his comrades.) He values friendship and in turn, is kind, thoughtful, and considerate to those he deems friends. He is extremely honorable and respectful of those he meets, formalities and all. Because of how he reads a person at their initial meeting, this can change his behavior toward those he meets. He likes helping people and feels he is giving a little back when he does.
Romantically, he is one that is very much for subtle touches and expressions. He is awkward when expressing his feelings and does so in the form of physical affection as a way of making up for his lack of words. As a man who is in action, he believes actions is the best way to speak. He has been in love before and takes the actions of what one does to the heart.

UNIFORM:
Wears a simplistic helmet that encompasses all of his head of a sleek carbon-fiber-like material with subtle amber lighting around certain sections of the helmet. Otherwise, he doesn't really mind what he wears besides the mask and changes his clothes intermittently and as needed. The helmet itself has its own technical uses in terms of technology, able to help further analyze and read a situation without difficulty. The helmet itself is near indestructible, made of a material that is not of the planet and is laced with traces of the mystic arts. (Think like Iron Man's helmet.)

O R I G I N

When he turned 18 in the early months of 1942, he immediately enlisted in the United States Navy to try and put his troubled childhood and [PAST REDACTED] behind him. From there, it seemed simple enough as he was trained, the regimen giving the troubled teen a sense of comfort as his father and his grandparents had once done the same.
A year into training, he was selected by the higher up for the potential to succeed in a series of experiments that would help end the war. With nothing left to lose, Jai accepted.
Since then, the teen vanished off the planet as the government kept his history tightly under wraps. All they knew was that he was handed off to do many black op missions and always returned harder than before. He disappeared again and no one had heard a word from him since. However, some files had turned up that they had lost him altogether and was unable to be found for some time.
Now fast forward to the present day, the soldier had resurfaced appearing slightly different, and yet looked the same as he did back then just shortly after his enlistment. And this time, his mission is the same as it always has been, but just like before, his lips are tightly sealed as to what the actual mission is. The one difference between then and now was that Jai had come back with what seemed to be enhancements that they've never seen before. There were some that could not be explained until they brought in his present-day partner, Leila. After that, Jai's information regarding his augmentations were all rumors.
Some say that he was knighted by the Queen and others said that he had met with Merlin, a person of mystery that they have been investigating. Others say that he had been blessed by the Fae and was greatly favored, despite the tech that had modified him. Due to his disappearance from any record (and perhaps even the planet), some say he was even abducted by aliens.
Whatever the case may be, Jai's time from the year he disappeared in 1945 to the present day where he appeared now had remained under heavy lock and key and no one was allowed to look… aside from a few select people.

HERO TYPE:
Brick / SOLDIER.

A modified human who had undergone experimentation and very specific modifications to be made as a super soldier.

POWER LEVEL:
C. World Level

P O W E R S

■ Genetic Makeup - Due to Jai being modified and generally played with in terms of genetics, his body was pushed to the extreme and beyond of its current normal human capabilities. Needless to say, his body adapted and grew from said modifications.
■ Enhanced Hearing and Smell - To be able to detect any dangerous of gas and surprise attacks, Jai has been modified to have enhanced hearing and smell. The range is extremely overwhelming to an ordinary human, but for Jai, it is anything within a two-mile radius. He is able to adjust his senses accordingly and rifle through the "white noise" to find sources of danger or points of interest.
■ Incredible Durability and Stamina - With the experiments and specific body modifications, Jai is extremely durable and powerful in terms of his durability. He is able to take quite a bit of damage without flinching and is able to keep up, if not surpass, even the toughest of warriors. In fact, he is able to even be on par with quite a vast variety of supernaturals. He's also very resilient to fatigue and exhaustion and doesn't show signs of it after long and an arduous amount of time and stress.
■ Inhuman Strength - His strength is rather undefined as no one really knows his limits. It is perhaps near-limitless given the tech and the body modifications that had been done to his genetics.

■ Rapid Regeneration - The regeneration speed is rapid and efficient enough that a gunshot wound of a typical 9mm pistol would heal within seconds of penetrating the skin.
■ Robotic Eye - His blue eye has the capability of monitoring and observing those in the general vicinity of his own selection. With conscious thought and a blink, he can switch between his vision from a "normal" view to infrared, night vision, thermal, distance magnification of 80x, x-ray, and facial recognition. There's an interface that only he can see that catalogs (each expression and minute detail of their face and person) and monitors the people he is interacting with: their heart rate (thanks to his excellent hearing), physical attributes of what they're wearing, body sizes and measurements, inflections, and body language.
■ Combat - In mid-combat, his eye has the capability to predict and see the intent behind a movement from the person he sees in both his peripheral and his front. He can even see the amount of weight behind each punch and kick. For example, if someone is intending to punch him with the intent of genuine harm, his eye will measure the amount of force behind it and the intent will pop-up as "Threatening" with indications of the weight.

■ Superior Intellect - An intuitive and knowledgeable "young" man, he's extremely observant of those he finds to be of interest with a photographic memory. Conversations and various topics have him quite proficient in it and is eager to talk if the need arises. He also is able to glance through anything once and have apt knowledge and application of it.
■ Parkour - Due to his capabilities of quick agility, he's able to scale buildings and jump around (sometimes even over) them with no trouble. If it means getting to the location at hand over the rooftops than the streets, then he would.
■ Military Training - Due to his enlistment, Jai is trained to be a well-rounded soldier in all manners of combat whether it's close-range or distance.
■ Gun Handling, Use & Knowledge
■ Hand-to-Hand Combat
■ Gathering Intel
■ Espionage
■ Infiltration
■ Battle Warfare, Tactics, & Strategy

■ Magic - This ranges for spells cast from to the type of magic used. On Jai's person, there is a certain amount of defensive spells that would only activate when his life is in danger or at risk of death. Once activated, the spells do not come back until the next day or after a night's rest. Otherwise, he's susceptible to the elemental magic.
■ Bullets / Knives - Shoot him enough times, and he'll actually die. Bullets can still hurt and penetrate him and injuries caused by any sort of sharp edge of a knife or dagger would still cut him.
■ Electrical Magnetic Pulse (EMP's) - While this would be specific to the type of tech Jai has, it would make his robotic eye and other electric-based weapons on hand that he has to cease functioning. This would force him to rely on his instincts and training. This would also render the technology in his helmet and his eye to become obsolete until he can get it fixed or about an hour has passed since the initial EMP blast.

S U P P O R T I N G C H A R A C T E R S

■ Leila Taylor - His go-to partner when he's on missions. Ever since he's resurfaced from wherever he had disappeared to, Leila was his assigned partner. However, she's mostly referred to as his backup, given his abilities and often uses her latent abilities as a Mystic to help Jai offensively from a distance.
■ Leo Hale - Jai's only remaining family relative and his younger brother. Currently missing and Jai has yet to discover his existence.
■ R - The person in charge that Jai and Leila report to.

At the current moment, she can animate three medium dog-sized objects and double that number the smaller the object.
However, this will slow, depending on her focus. If she focuses on another to help heal them, then her recovery will slow down to compensate. Alternatively, if she hasn't properly taken care of herself, her regeneration will also slow down to preserve energy. However, regardless of her exhaustion, she will never be pushed to the brink of death by whatever means, be it poison, severe injuries, etc.

★ Paparazzi - Athena is famous all over the world as a renowned singer, dancer, and actress with a huge following over ten million fans. Because of this, she's often worried about her public image and tries to keep to a certain personality type of cheeriness and friendliness.
✦ Mental & Physical Duress - Her abilities directly correlate to the wellness and health of her mind and body. As she's aging, her body is continuously changing and will continue to change her limitations. This leaves Athena in dangerous territory as she has yet to discover the limitations of her healing abilities.

JAI HALE

For Racheli, the last month passed in a blur of events. Most the time it seemed far from plausible as she mulled over it now.

Midas had decided to give her some space ever since she took off to join the heroes. Ms Sparks had popped in to check on her, likely because she didn’t answer the phone. This allowed Rach to fill the woman in on the minor role she played. In return, she received an unsavory amount of information that confirmed her suspicions about her father being alive. Deep down she couldn’t help but realize she had hoped the card had been someone’s sick joke and not the authentic thing.

Her paranoia had increased tenfold causing her to discover Fletch’s real identity when she spotted the woman’s bike in the garage one day. A light popped on and she cursed herself out for her slowness, feeling she should’ve caught on sooner than later. In a small way, it comforted her to know this partnership wasn’t simply a one-sided thing now.

It took yet more time and effort before she was convinced that Jai was trustworthy with samples of her blood. He wanted to create a serum that would repair Fletch in days rather than wait naturally using reprogramed nanites in her blood. It helped her virus was against it all the way.

Racheli’s mind drifted over the details as she sat on the stool, waiting for directions from Fletch.

Ever since that day in the Hounds’ HQ, Kayla had been spending time trying to recover from the injuries she sustained from the fight. She was stitched up by the paramedics on the scene but fortunately kept her identity a secret. While the bullet wound had been explained to Jeremy Taylor that she got caught up in the battle during the battle in Sherman Square, which also explained the damaged bike, but the gashes on her side were concealed very well.

Despite all the caution she had used, that hidden injury could only remain hidden to everyone for so long. And it just so happened that the latest employee of the garage, Jai Hale, had noticed it while she spent time fixing her bike and a customer’s car. At first, she didn’t know how he knew to the point that she didn’t trust him. But as the month went on, she warmed up to his presence in her little corner of the garage. Not that she had a choice, with Taylor assigning him to the electronics side of the garage.

Shortly after Jai and Kayla had met in the garage, her secret identity as Fletch was suddenly revealed. She had been working on her bike at the time when, of all people, Racheli walked in to meet the ‘contact.’ Jai had been out of the room to meet someone himself during the meeting. The metahuman seemed pissed off with the sudden reveal, but the archer had calmed her down and explained the precautions she gave. For the first time since it had happened, she told Racheli about what happened in Pasadena 5 years ago. About Jason. Despite the short time they’ve known each other, Kayla had learned to confide in someone with all the pain she had faced and still faced to this day.

When it came to Jai meeting Racheli, things were… interesting, to say the least. The information on who he was as a person is still something for Kayla’s head to wrap around. But what he offered regarding contacts and possible training was something that she saw as an opportunity. The training was something that a better prospect than what she could offer regarding kickboxing. It took a while for what was said to sink in, but she managed to get the message through to Racheli.

”Ok, now the orange wire should slot into the available port in the connector,” Kayla spoke, feeding instructions to Racheli. ”Once in, the whole connector should be fine to plug into where the ignition should be.”

The archer would have done the whole system herself, but with her gashes still healing and a load of persistence from Jai, she had been feeding instructions to him or Racheli whenever she was in.

For Jai, learning and adapting to normalcy is something that both feels surreal and out of place. Disconcerting in a sense that he no longer has to live in secrecy, the soldier finds himself almost liking the "civilian" life. The interview process for him to work in this garage was simple, and Kayla ended up being his co-worker in working on the electronic components with each vehicle or motorcycle that comes into the shop.

What he didn't expect is for her to come in injured when he first met her, obvious to his sharp gaze. If Kayla so much as lifted or overexerted herself in any fashion, he knows those stitches would reopen and would force the healing process all over again. Briefly, he contemplated whether or not his partner, Leila, would be able to create something that would accelerate the healing process of someone like Kayla.

If it weren't for her meeting Leila, the idea of meeting Racheli wouldn't have crossed either of the soldiers' mind. And that meeting only snowballed into quite the work-in-progress and today was when the experiments were ready for their first and safe human trial.

He's on his way back to the garage with Leila following closely behind. She wanted to see the progress her work has gone and felt the dire need to be there when it's administered. When the garage came into view, Leila skipped on ahead to reach the two that waited inside.

Popping into view with her silvery blonde hair pulled back, she walked into the garage to where Racheli and Kayla were with a sparkle in her eye and Jai impassively greeting the two girls with a curt nod.

"It's ready, ladies—shall we give it a go?" she chirped with her hands on her hips.

Racheli’s indifferent expression hid what she thought, mainly the fact about the nervous she felt when it came to Kayla trying the experimental serum produced from her blood. There was no telling if the intelligence was purged from the virus within and it would only heal her friend. The last thing Rach wanted to see was Fletch turn into some inhuman creature. The images of the virus’ past swirled into her attention before she pushed it away.

She had impulsively already placed in the orange wire, then wrapped up as instructed. Hopping off from the seat, her eyes examined Jai a moment, and she nodded. Her attention turned to Kayla. Silently, the woman was asking if her friend was really willing to take the risk.

[b]“You sure you want to take the chance? Racheli doesn’t seem to have the same faith in your friend as you do…”[b] Came the words from her virus causing Rach’s head to jerk into his direction.

Her eyes heated up with anger and spite, loathing at the image projected about five feet from the ladies. His arms crossed over his chest while dressed in a grey polo tee and black slacks. The man’s appearance held weariness from broken sleep cycles, though they were very subtle and easily dismissed.

“Shut up, no one asked for your opinion.” Racheli snapped.

Kayla watched as Racheli followed the instructions to the letter. Hopefully, that’s my bike now done. But before she could get a chance to turn the engine over, Jai and his friend, Leila, had arrived. The woman Jai was with was the one who had the know-how to change the nanites in Rach’s blood from the state they were into something that can be used to accelerate the healing process. And judging from her chirpy disposition, she managed to accomplish that. Kayla nodded back at Jai, acknowledging his welcome. She still needed to make up her mind about him, but that was due to him being the first guy to waltz into her life in a while. Not since Mark came knocking with Mia’s life.

Before her thought got distracted to her friend’s boyfriend and his condition, a familiar voice came up. Kayla’s piercing gaze quickly diverted to the projection the virus was making. She still had to get used to the idea that Racheli was capable of projecting an apparition due to the virus, albeit not on the latter’s choice. While the virus had been annoying over the past month, it did raise a valid point about risking herself to try something completely experimental. As Racheli scolded the man, Kayla’s face pondered into thought.

”This is a huge risk that I am taking, indeed,” she replied, surprisingly towards the virus. ”For all we know, the virus might still cause some harm to me, even if it does its job in healing the injuries. But still…”

She paused for a moment, her eyes turning back towards Jai and Leila. A small smile crept on her face as she nodded towards them. ”If the implication of this working properly is still on the table, then I’m more than happy to take it. And as Racheli says, no one asked for your opinion.”

Jai's eyes flicked to the appearing visual of a figure, recollecting the first time this had occurred at all. It was a curious phenomenon that he had added to his list of strange occurrences to investigate whenever he had time. (Though he digressed, and it was something to consider when both he and Leila had already analyzed the blood sample that Racheli had been so kind to give.) Based on his physical appearance, he took note of the exhausted state he was in and cataloged it for later analysis.

He didn't respond to the virus' remark, leaving it to Kayla to respond in kind after a short pause and he waited for another beat before deciding to give his comments on the situation. He stood at ease next to Leila, apprehensive to the procedure and was prepared to step in should the need arise.

"If those risks and concerns of either Racheli or Kayla were more prevalent, then Leila wouldn't have gone ahead with the experiment," Jai commented. His dual colored irises fell briefly on the virus. "It's out of your hands now."

Jai faced the girls with the same cool expression he often wore.

"Thank you, Jai—much appreciated," she said dryly, her smile gone. Leila shook her head and turned to face the two girls. Waving a hand dismissively at the projected virus, she took a few steps forward to where Kayla sat until she stood right in front of her. Her brow raised in question.

"Ready? But, quite frankly, do not worry too much; Jai was my guinea pig before you, and he turned out fine," Leila reassured. The words had Jai shoot a look in her direction. "But I'll ask again: are you ready?" Her tone hardened, emphasized in the way her body shifted upright.

Kayla’s gaze turned to Jai as he spoke to the apparition. While his comments didn’t add much to the scolding remarks aimed at the virus, it certainly helped with showing their thought unanimously. And that was something that the archer couldn’t help but silently chuckle at. That was another thing that both Jai and Kayla had in common and after less than a month of meeting each other.

When Leila spoke and approached her, Kayla was surprised at the mention of Jai being the guinea pig for this. While her face didn’t betray much of the emotion bar the slight clench of her jaw, her eyes showed how vexed she was at the idea. ”As long as he was ok with being the guinea pig for the experiments,” she replied, her voice eerily calm despite what her eyes were saying. Then, a thought came into her mind. Why am I suddenly overreacting to the idea? It’s not like I even know them enough to show concern.

Shaking the thought away, Kayla focused on Leila, her jaw relaxing and most of the expression in her eyes fading away. She began unzipping the top of her overalls and slid off the top half of it. Making sure that the sleeves weren’t close to the wounds, partially revealed underneath the sports t-shirt she was wearing underneath; she tied the sleeves around her waist. ”Ready to get an unknown substance that creates that asshat over there injected into me? No, I’m not ready. But let’s get this over with. These cuts have been annoying me for far too long.”

The virus shrugged, his right foot stepped to the side and twisted himself about.

“Very well, the choice and the risk is yours. If you don't mind, I'll remind my host the last time I was tampered with it resulted in our current situation,” one last warning before he vanished from sight.

Leila regarded the area around them and wrinkled her nose. Not exactly sanitary, but it'll have to do.

Racheli nodded at Kayla’s decision but scoffed at her virus’ words. Ignoring him, she walked closer to the other two and continued the conservation. An important question surged into her attention.

“Do we have anything to monitor her if something goes wrong?”

Jai tapped to his temple on the side of his blue eye. "There's my eye," he offered. "I can monitor her heart rate." Though, his eyes narrowed subtly. "And if need be, I'll step in, but let us hope that it doesn't come to that."

Leila shook her head. "No, I don't think so." The blonde pulled out a syringe no bigger than six inches long, filled with a pale red luminescent liquid. Jai held out his hand, and she set it there while pulling out a rubber cord. Tying it off at the top of her arm, she pulled out a wipe and took Kayla's forearm into Leila's hand. Wiping the inner elbow where a small number of veins were visible, Leila finally took back the syringe. "Now, you'll feel a slight pinch."

That was the only warning Leila would give before locating the vein and promptly inserting the needle. There was a moment of silence as she squeezed the contents out. Once emptied, the needle was withdrawn and recapped and set back in the bag she had brought it in.

Kayla looked on as the virus gave his ominous warning about the tampering of the virus. It only added to the uncomfortable position she had to be in with the modified virus to be injected into her bloodstream. Nevertheless, she still set her mind on getting this over with.

While there was nothing in the electrical section of the shop to help monitor her situation, Jai offered the use of his eye to monitor Kayla’s heart rate. She had been worried about any possible side effects that she would face, despite all the testing already done on Jai. Even so… ”Even if something was to happen,” she replied to him, a defiant look in her eyes. ”I’ve experienced worse things.” While Racheli had been the only person she talked to about events in Pasadena, she wouldn’t be surprised if Leila had delved into her history and found the news articles.

When Kayla uttered out she had experienced worse; Rach snorted in disagreement.

“I don’t know of any experience worse than having your DNA rewritten.”

"I don't imagine, as Racheli stated, there is anything worse than having your DNA being rewritten," Jai affirmed.

While Kayla had been tough with most things, the sight of the needle was enough for her to avert her gaze away. It was the only thing that had made her uncomfortable, all the way back to when she was a child. While the warning came, it still made the archer flinch when the needle was pushed into her skin. She felt the contents being injected into her lower arm, her free arm reaching out for something to place over the site of the injection.

Racheli’s eyebrow rose, and her lips pressed tightly into a frown. She didn’t see how Jai could ‘step in’ and stop it. No matter how sugar coated the intention was, they were manipulating Kayla’s DNA. The fact hit Rach like a brick as she realized the pain would be uncomfortable to watch.

Tension spread across Racheli’s surface at watching the red luminescent liquid disappear into her friend’s vein. A small regret at suggesting her blood sparked into her core but found itself extinguished shortly afterward. Too late to go back now. Her protective nature caused her to move closer to Kayla, positioned beside the woman and at the ready.

Leila took a few steps back and away from everyone to watch the proceedings. Taking out a pair of glasses, she donned the slender frames and waited.

With the snap of Leila's fingers, a barely visible film of a shimmering light blue appeared and wrapped around the interior of the room that they were in. Crossing her arms, she continued to utter quiet words while her gaze remained on Kayla. She knew Jai would be prepared for whatever came next.

It had been minutes since the injection had been given to her and she felt nothing. Kayla peeled back some of the bandages to check and see if the injection was working. While the injection went off without as much of a hitch, she still had her doubts. ”Did the virus take this long for the healing process to start?” There had been a hint of worry in her voice, the uncomfortable feeling of the needle still affecting her. A moment later, a warm sensation began to form around the wounds. In her eyes, she could see flesh - her flesh - knitting themselves back together, though the scarring process of the initial healing was carrying on into what was there. Seemed there was nothing to worry about at…

Racheli’s ears tuned into Kayla’s heartbeat and breathing, her eyes closed to block out other distractions her heighten senses might produce. Ba-thump, Ba-thump, Ba-thump… The heart became steady after a few moments. Then all hell broke loose when the serum began its work.

Jai knelt beside Kayla on the other side of Racheli. When it took longer than expected for the healing process to begin, he knew that what was coming was going to be the worst of it. Her heart rate was picking up, and the speed at which her body was recovering was already accelerating."Brace yourself." Jai knew that no matter what he did to help ease the incoming change, there was no helping the scream that would soon tear through the garage.

A blinding pain erupted in her side before Kayla managed to finish the thought. The initial shock didn’t hold back the scream that left her lungs. With all the workers in the garage already gone home for the rest of the day, there was no rush to the door. Her body contorted in the direction of the gashes, her right arms grasping for anything to hold herself up. Her heart rate shot up with the sudden pain as if her left side was bleeding. Breathing heavily, Kayla tried biting through the pain as the flesh accelerated the healing process. Suddenly, her core muscles began to cramp up, the healing eeking its way towards her front. Not only did the sudden pain cause her to scream again but it caused her arm propping her up to give way, her body slumping to the floor.

Instinctively, she closed her body up as the muscles contracted, screams still leaving her frame.

Her eyes widened when Kayla began to scream, the woman tossed into painful spasms then crumbled. Instinctively Rach’s arm jerked out to soften Kayla’s fall into the ground. This pain was all too familiar to her as she watched her friend wither in torment.

“Bear through it. It always hurts the first few times, and doesn’t get better,” Rach said with surprising softness, her figure lowered into the ground.

Her arms wrapped about Kayla’s shoulders in a vice grip. She tried to keep her friend from hurting herself as the storm passed. Her virus, not appearing to the others, spoke in Rach’s head.

‘Cut off her pain receptors or watch her suffer,’ it said coldly.

“I don’t know how,” Rach snapped out loud.

‘Link up, and I’ll do the rest, it’s simple.“

“Fuck you.”

When Kayla fell, both Jai and Racheli reached out to soften the fall. After letting Racheli hold Kayla in her arms (of which, he did not doubt that there wouldn't be any trouble), he blinked and switched his vision from normal to a specific vision that allowed him to monitor further Kayla's progression that Leila had been kind enough to offer for this one time. With her heart rate was at an all-time high, there was nothing he could do to stifle the screams and to calm her heart rate. The best thing he could do would be what came after the changes and healing had finished.

Her eyes widened when Kayla began to scream, the woman tossed into painful spasms then crumbled. Instinctively Rach’s arm jerked out to soften Kayla’s fall into the ground. This pain was all too familiar to her as she watched her friend wither in torment.

‘Link up, and I’ll do the rest, it’s simple.“

“Fuck you.”

Jai's attention flickered to Racheli when she suddenly snapped in frustration. At that, he could only assume she was talking to the virus like they had been earlier. Keeping his attention focused on Kayla's heart rate and the other vitals that have appeared in his line of vision, he spoke loud enough for Leila to hear him.

"Leila, help her. We're not cruel enough that we should let her suffer."

She sighed. "Of course not. Racheli, let her go—I've got her." Leila stood with her legs evenly apart and adjusted her stance accordingly. Bringing her palms out in Kayla's direction, she used her right hand, and her hand flicked out into hand signs.

At the mention of her name, Rach’s head snapped upward and faced Leila. Her eyes were icy before she closed them. She grumbled while her arms peeled off of her friend and shifted the body toward the woman’s direction.

Once Racheli released her friend, two shimmering light blue rings encircled Kayla's wrists and were followed by two similar ones that were strapped to her ankles. Forcing her to lay down on the ground, Leila overlaid on top of Kayla's skin was the same shimmery light blue film, barely visible that it would slowly aid with the pain. The first time, Leila noted, would always hurt the most, but the times after that would pale in comparison. She needed Kayla's body to remember the pain or else anything else she suffered would be just as debilitating as her DNA being rewritten. The best Leila could do was make it, so Kayla didn't hurt herself.

"Her heart rate is spiking." Jai frowned. In just a few and excruciatingly long minutes, the changes should be done, and ideally, Kayla would be healed.

Kayla couldn’t notice things that are going on around her. The intense pain in her side and stomach had overwhelmed her thinking and her awareness. The muscles had all tensed up as she remained curled up in someone’s arms that she wasn’t able to see or hear. The warm heat she felt before was a blinding inferno in her side as the healing accelerated. Despite all the pain she’s feeling - in a twisted turn of thought - the pain had been a bit of a blessing. For the first time, she was not thinking about anything that had happened up until that point. Her troubled mind was focused on the pain and not the aches of her heart.

With tears stinging her eyes shut, her mind barely registered her closed-off body was forced open. Another scream escaped her throat as her body straightened out, though the intensity of the pain hadn’t increased. Slowly, the heat in her side began to cool down, the healing process almost at the end. The flesh still had some knitting to do, but the scar tissue was visible on the lowest of the gashes. The gash had stopped moving the moment Kayla was straightened out, the shallowest of the cuts now fully healed.

In the briefest of moments, something inside Kayla’s body clicked into gear. As if it had laid dormant from a time unknown, something had registered a problem and now made a beeline to the areas that are being healed. Whatever it had been, it gave off a faint electrical signal as it reached the sight of the working virus and began attacking it.

Leila's eyes narrowed when she sensed the changes within the girl's body. Jai switched his vision repeatedly to cycle through the options to have a better idea of what was happening.

The blinding pain she was feeling shot up without warning. Everything in her body went into overdrive as her screams suddenly increased in intensity and pitch. Her heart rate shot up and beyond what her heart should be beating at. Her temperature spiked up with the sudden change. In her mind, with what little thinking power she had, Kayla had thought that this was it. That her story was to end on the floor of the garage, her body writing and contorting with the attempts to heal.

And then, everything came to a crashing halt. The pain, the intense heat around her healing wounds and the screaming all stopped. Even the faint electrical signal disappeared. The archer’s body stopped writhing and just collapsed. For a few moments, nothing was moving from her.

"Told you… I’ve experienced worse…”

Just under her power, Kayla’s eyes flickered open, stinging from the salt in her sweat. Her lips curled slightly into a weak smile as she tried to focus on Racheli, heavy breathing now leaving her lips. While what she said was verging on a lie - the pain she felt was on par with what she had felt before - she didn’t want to admit it. If she was to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people Jai and Rach were, her personality needed to match it. In a way, she wanted both of them to know that she was able to keep up with whatever they can handle, despite being a simple human with an enhancement to her agility.

"I'd hate to see what worse looks like," Jai stated dryly. Still, the process was complete, and through all of Jai's filtering and with a cursory glance from Leila, Kayla was successfully healed without any issues.
BEFORE DEPLOYMENT. Part I.

L O C A T I O N: Undisclosed Military Base
T I M E: February: Four Months Prior to Hounds' Attack; 20:39

There have been worse rooms than the bare backbones of a little bedroom that they had given him. His dual colored eyes blinked in mild surprise, and his gaze swept over the militaristic, neat place. After a brief pause, he sat down on the "bed." With only a worn bed, a single metal nightstand with a yellowing lamp, an old drawer set, and a set of hooks on the wall, Jai Hale ran his hands down his thighs to his knees.

Weapons of an unknown origin were taken from him, a "gift" given to him before his arrival to the military base. The only thing that he was allowed to keep was the small earpiece that was wrapped around his right ear, the same side as his blue eye. He blinked with the intent of changing his vision to heat, and his vision adjusted to view the two body heat signatures of the two officers who put him in the room. As he listened to the conversation outside, he noted that they still had no idea as to what he was truly capable of doing.

"He's a danger. We've done all of the tests we could on him ever since he returned and it's as if someone's gone crazy on him."

The other he was speaking with had gestured for him to follow. "Yes, but he could be beneficial to us later. Especially, if the results are what you say they are." There was a pause, and Jai blinked again to change his vision from heat to x-ray to watch as the person speaking started to flip through some documents held in his hand. He flicked the papers back into place before closing the folder. Handing it to the other, he continued in a manner-of-fact tone, "Have you tried testing his capabilities yet?" He straightened his posture, hands held together behind him.

"No, sir, we haven't—"
"Do it."
"But, sir! He's—"
"Did I ask for your opinion, soldier?" His tone was sharp.
His shoulders minutely slumped before he squared himself and shook his head. "No, sir."
"What'd you say?"
"No, sir!"

"Good." He turned and began to walk away from the bedroom and led the other down the halls that Jai had walked through prior. "Ready the testing fields and prep him for combat."

"Yes, sir!"

And the conversation ended. Blinking again, Jai switched his vision from x-ray to normal and glanced about the room once more. With a sigh, he set down the small bag of belongings they allowed him to have by the nightstand and shifted to laying down on the bed. With his fingers laced behind his head, he looked over the ceiling for a moment before closing his eyes. Tomorrow, he'll be fighting for the first time since he's returned, and Jai wasn't sure how his fellow brothers-in-arms would view him since who he once was is no more.

T I M E: Next Day; 07:00

As the Humvee came to a stop on the very outskirts of an expansive field, Jai was ordered to remain standing in the place marked. "Here," the driver said as he had his hand on the door handle, "they're going to give you your next orders through that so don't break it, you hear?"

Jai nodded.

"Remember, you need to show all of your abilities. They're going to be watching so watch yourself, Hale."

With a minute nod, he took a step out and took a quick look around to note the expansive space of the nothingness around him. When he spotted the marking on the ground spray painted with a red "x," he looked back to watch as the vehicle drove off in the direction of what he could only assume to be the base. However, even as his gaze flitted around him, he observed that there was nothing he could see in the distance. There were no buildings and no sign of life out in the middle of what he could only assume to be the desert. Temperatures were bearable, cold when the sun had yet hadn't entirely risen over the horizon, and it would melt what little of the chill that the desert would gather in the winter. With not a single cloud in sight, it was making to be a very clear day.

And he could only assume what they were going to do.

He flexed his fingers and placed the small radio into his ear. The range, he guessed, had to be no further than five miles, and was just out of his range. They were wary, that much was clear, and they couldn't find out any further information from him as to his whereabouts the last seventy years that had enabled him to have such advanced pieces of technology and abilities. Still, their concern was evident in even the soldier who drove him out here. Apprehension, suspicion, and fear were emotions that seemed to haunt each person he had interacted with since he arrived at this particular military institution. He didn't blame them, no, but rather understood on some level their concern. After all, he was mostly an alien with how different he had become.

With the radio neatly placed in the one ear, he lifted a hand to press against the earpiece on the other. Immediately, in a shutter of blue angler lines of light, his head was quickly engulfed in a sleek black helmet. Warm, amber colored slim lighting lit up, and a cool blue HUD appeared. His radar blipped on screen, and it indicated a rapidly approaching object. Widening his stance, he shifted and turned to the approaching missile. The moment it showed in range, the cameras inside the helmet zoomed in on the missile, and a countdown clock appeared in the upper right corner of his interface of how soon it'd be before it collided with him. Without any information as to what he was supposed to do with the incoming missile, he changed positions and braced for impact.

Seven.

His sensors began chiming more warning sounds as more missiles shot in his direction. Glancing at the radar, he noted two more projectiles headed his way. Jai leaned forward into a runner's stance, hands placed on the ground with practiced precision.

Six.

He pushed off the ground and took off into a run before he jumped and effortlessly soared through the air for several long seconds before landing.

Three.

Jai rotated and changed directions to the second incoming missile between where the other paths of the rockets would collide.

Two.

They were in plain view now, missiles that were four times his size, and were a danger to him if they landed. Waste of ammo, if Jai had to say so himself, but he needed to show his superiors of the changes that had come about in the last seventy decades. While unpleasant memories threatened to surface, he pushed them back down and focused on the task at hand. There was no time to dwell on the past when he was finally back home.

One.

At the very last second, he jumped high into the air and landed on top of the first launched missile and dug his hands into the metal cover that covered the rocket to keep himself steady as he flew straight. Breaking open the panel where he knew the computer hardware was for their guidance and flight system, his eyes glanced at the screen and the vast array of wires inside. The interface began to analyze the sneak peek he had at the hardware and began to break down each of its components while processing and eliminating the possible make and model of the missile within mere nanoseconds. Rearranging a few select wires and then breaking a few, the rocket changed its target from him to the second incoming missile. The missile continued to climb in elevation toward the second missile, and the ground soon became further and further away from view.

Bracing himself, he jumped once more at the last second before the collision and was falling, propelled by the explosion. He turned mid-air as the previous missile came flying toward him as he rapidly fell. Jai pulled his left arm back and prepared for impact from both the ground and the rocket itself. When the missile drew close, he punched it to divert its path to space off to his right and exploded just as he landed with a resounding and explosive boom in the ground.

Chunks and pieces of the ground flew outward from the created crater. Moments later, Jai rose to sit and shrugged off the stiffness that came from landing as roughly as he had. Dusting himself off as best as he could, he stood and shrugged his shoulders once more. His clothes looked wrecked with rips and tears from the crash into rock and the ground itself, but his helmet was unscathed as was the rest of him. He could still feel the faint tingling of his skin from being stitched back together that would have usually killed a human being.

The radio crackled in his left ear. "Hale, we're going to send more missiles and droids your way so prepare yourself."

"Sir, permission to speak?" Jai asked, rolling his shoulders as he made his way out of the crater.

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before he spoke again. "Go ahead."

"Is there a purpose in doing all of this? You already have done all the testing you wanted on me, and there's nothing else I can give you." Jai mused that they wanted to get on video the level of prowess he had in combat and use it for later along with the other samples and tests they had done. However, there was something in the works that had his contracts changed, and he was being taken to work for another person. And it was someone who had wanted to keep him a secret.

Jai understood why without even having to ask. After all, his mission had yet to begin, and he knew that when the protocol was activated, it would be the end for him.

"Because you'll be leaving our service, Hale," the man said solemnly. "And when you leave, you'll be fighting a different kind of war."

So, to memorialize him, hm? How unfortunate. Still, all of his friends and family that he had once upon a time, were now long dead and he was one of the few that had survived the war that had once haunted his dreams. With nothing left to lose, Jai continued to be the faithful and obedient soldier people had wanted him to be.

"You understand?"

Unfortunately, he did. But he had a feeling that his superior wouldn't get what he wanted and in the end, this would merely be a training exercise and nothing else.

"Yes, sir. Now, send me everything you have."
