History: A genetics scientist in a private lab on Ganymede, she volunteered to be a test subject for an experiment that, if successful, would be able to enhance human body's strength, movement, and reaction times. It succeeded, but the feline genes used had an unexpected side effect. She grew cat ears, tail, and the hair on her body became more pronounced. Where she didn't have hair wouldn't be affected.
Before she could decide what to do in her normal life, it was decided for her. She was to remain at the lab permanently. At first she didn't mind. She was constantly tripping over her new tail, and she hadn't figured out how to tell what few friends she had what happened. But once the fear and uncertainty faded away, she made plans to leave. Escape if needed.
That's what she had to do in the end. No one felt she should be out in public, and her colleagues made hollow excuses why she should stay. One night she leapt out a third story window, landing safely due to her feline DNA, and dashed into the darkness.
She was soon picked up by a less than trustworthy person, who whispered gentle promises of a nice life, despite her appearance. She agreed, seeing she had no other choice. The man was a drug dealer of some reputation, and had plans for his new pet...

Kat chuckled and turned her eyes to the rookies for the first time. In the illumination of the light above their table, all of them might notice something odd with her eyes. They just didn't look right...Were they vertical? The ears, while just above the line of the light, appeared to move once again. "And just what have you heard, my dear dinosaur?" She folded her arms across her chest, kicking her feet up.
"Kat with eight lives". I also am talking in the context of verbal exchange. "Cat" is rarely spelled with a K, So saying one knew how it was spelled without seeing it written is presumptuous and borderline meta-gaming.
But I am now nitpicking. An assassin with the name 'cat' and a gun for hire seemingly wearing cat ears is a safe assumption when the commander called her cat is a safe assumption.
I also want to note, Not even her reputation thinks her feline aspects are real. All it says is that she wears cat ears and calls herself Kat.

Well, to be more detailed. He COULD have overheard whispers of a 'cat with eight lives' when looking for work as a bounty hunter. But it's a jump to assume that someone -named- Kat would be the same person. Only the higher-ups of the groups she's hired by know what she looks like. The title can mean anyone, or to throw off people.
Jus' 'cause I'm feline doesn't mean I can climb expertly! That be a stereotype!
