The Magician
【Age|Gender】
29|Male
【Nation】
Lin-Jan Revolutionary Government [Formerly Earth Kingdom]
【Personality】
As with any soldier, Yan's personality is composite. At his core, he is a jovial man, quick to joke and quicker to laugh, always looking for a chance to meet new people or enjoy the company old friends. He is naturally inquisitive and leans towards the over-analytical, frequently unsatisfied by not knowing something only tangentially useful. He is highly moralistic and set in his views, and is politically minded despite his occupation. He despises tyranny and values freedom, and strongly dislikes deontological belief systems and dogmatic views. He is a relaxed man at his core, though is dedicated and fastidious on matters that he views as necessary.
Obviously, his time in the military have changed him. He is a tidy man, whose time as an officer has made him love the ordered and strongly dislike reneged plans or rescinded promises. He never learned to like the deference of his subordinates, but did learn very quickly to be polite and deferential to superiors. His service above all has made him take a great deal of personal responsibility for the wellbeing and safety of those who rely on him, and finds himself sometimes frustratingly clinging to the belief that his first and only duty is to protect the lives of his subordinates.
【History】
Earning a scholarship to the Ba Sing Se Military Academy in the hopes of making a better life for his ailing mother, Yan reluctantly joined the military as a means of advancing himself socially and economically. He took advantage of the free college education he would otherwise have been denied, and committed himself as a scholar his whole time at the school, excelling both in military subjects and outside of them. It was here the real seeds of dissent were planted, his lust for knowledge stymied by censorship and lack of rights at the very time he bloomed into a man interested and active in political theory. Despite his frustrations, he graduated with distinction from the Academy and immediately entered service in the 23rd Infantry Regiment.
His eight years of service were chaotic, dangerous, and featured a meteoric rise in the ranks for Yan. His time in the military was punctuated by large loyalist rebellions, terrorist strikes and religious zealotry. Yan was constantly torn, his sympathies for the revolutionaries growing each week. He was almost court-martialled for refusing to put down the only group of freedom fighters he agreed with, a group asking not for territory or respect, but of fundamental, sensible changes to the Imperial economic policy. For all the others, he worked his hardest to put them down, remembering that religious extremism or terroristic actions have never produced positive change.
His mother died when he was 28, soon after Yan was promoted to Brigadier General, one of the youngest officers to hold the rank since the Great War. The death temporarily destabilized Yan, who realized his last excuse for supporting a government he despised had died with his last parent. He defected, convincing most of the regiment to leave with him. They established the Lin-Jan Revolutionary Movement, a nation only in name, dedicated to fight for democracy and self-determination, and the overthrow of the Emperor. Their time at first was difficult, as they struggled to find funding and members, but now more than a year later the Government is established and a potent revolutionary force under the guiding hand of Yan. It is an organization funded by powerful factions and their refugee citizens living within their hidden enclaves of freedom, made of almost three thousand veteran soldiers often times as equipped as the proper military. They assist groups that fight for freedom and worthy goals all around the world, consulting revolutionaries that are constantly building power and influence, waiting patiently for the time they can openly oppose the Empire and change the world. He is a pioneer of the use of the firearm in warfare. Even among his enemies his advancement in the field of guerilla combat and small-unit infantry tactics are respected and becoming more and more mainstream in the Imperial Military Academies, his unorthodox leadership style, while bringing both successes and failures to the Government, are being seen as more and more noteworthy.
With the identification of a new Avatar, Yan has seen an opportunity to make a move, and has begun to commit the Government's

Though having little talent for it before his defection, the rigors of leading a revolutionary government have made him a competent administrator, though one who relies on the talented people around him.
