Itoshi Residence

Cleaning his own room was probably Gen's worst decision. One may ask what triggered that particular impulse. The answer would be that he was unable to find the triple A batteries that had escaped from the remote control. They were the smallest things, those batteries, and he had previously lost the thing that sealed the batteries (what was it called again? Cover thing? Black thingie? No, that was just wrong). He was always proud of his vocabulary, and yet, he could not recall how it was called. In any case, that was neither here nor there, because the matter at hand was the batteries, not the... thing.

It was amazing how an object could disappear so easily, especially when one just scattered all his personal belongings on the floor, bed, desk, but nothing on the closet. Even the cubical TV was the bearer of miscellaneous stuff, which was piled up so dangerously that it would put the Tower of Pisa to shame. It could not even be called an organised mess; it was just an outright disaster. His mother had stopped cleaning the room for him long before his father's death, so he could learn how to be responsible. Such was the top first year student's irony.

"Hey, I haven't seen this in ages!" Gen pulled a t-shirt up from the floor and saw a Saint Seiya keychain that he had bought with his first allowance. It was Cygnus' cloth box, linked to a chain and this to a keyring. All this time it had been under something, either a shirt, a magazine, or God knows what. It was faded and dusty, as it had not been used for quite a while. It also brought a certain memory back: when he first showed it to his parents, they did not allow him to take it to school because 1) he did not have any keys to begin with and 2) he might lose it or get it stolen by one of the kids. They were pretty adamant in their decision. So this thing had never left home, and as time passed by, Gen forgot about it, and before he knew it, he lost it. Or so he seemed. It all comes back if one puts effort into finding them.

The batteries were just next to the keychain.
How to put this... I have been studying for a final that I failed, so yeah, not cute.

However, I'm back (again) and I'll try to make up for lost time... hopefully.

Warakuma Recreational Center

Masahide sat down and kind of... napped? That appeared to be the case. Gen tried to blame it on his glasses, but what Yamato said confirmed his suspicions. Wow he must really be tired, Gen thought, sleeping in a public place like that. It was not like he was infringing any laws, unlike Gen who, with a certain someone, practised in broad daylight with swords. Okay, they were not exactly swords, they were kamas, but they had edge and they were probably dangerous and illegal and stolen. The last one was not true, well, he did not know that, but most illegal stuff was stolen, so that conclusion was not too far off.

"Ah, it's all right, but it's probably nothing compared to the big city," Gen answered as to regain the appearance of a 'typical' conversation, but with a nodded-off Masahide in the surroundings, it was proving to be difficult. "If you want to see life, you could just hang out here or go to Ferrero Mall. Those are usually the most lively places," he suggested. True, there were probably a couple more places, but it all depended on Yamato. The Center and the Mall were of fairly general interest. Gen noticed a rather nasty dust particle on his left lens, so he made it his duty to remove it. "So, you said you are from Okinawa, right? Is it very different from Warakuma?" There could not be that many differences, given that they were in the same country. As he spoke, he took out his glasses and a icy blue handkerchief from his pocket and started wiping the left lens clean. That dust particle was dead now, and-

Oh no.

Instead of being eliminated, the particle spread through the entirety of the lense in a circle fashion, just like how he tried to wipe it off. That was a national scale tragedy, and he could not do without his glasses. "E-excuse me, but I have to use the bathroom," Adding 'it's an emergency' would have made him sound ridiculous, but in essence it was true. He could break his neck if he did not mind where he stepped. He bowed shortly and sped to the restroom to get rid of the menace.

Warakuma Recreational Center

And just like that, a simple conversation between two acquaintances became a full-fledge group meeting. Gen was surprised by this change, if only because he came to the recreational center thinking that he would find no one he was acquainted with. Well, in a sense he was right, since there were two individuals in that group that he did not know. One was Masahide's companion, and the other was the girl that waved and called Shizuka effusively. The latter seemed kind of familiar, though, probably from school? Gen could not put his finger on which class she was in or what her last name even was. But hey, meeting new people should not hurt, right?

"Hello-oh!" He said but stopped mid-sentence at the sight of Yamato holding his stomach. Gen took his glasses by the frame to place them on the curve of his nose and directed his next question at Yamato. "A-are you okay? Should we get someone?" He asked the second question to Masahide. As gullible as Gen was, he thought that Yamato was in actual pain and not acting at all. There should be some kind of doctor's office there; after all, it was a public place where accidents were prone to happen. What if someone hit their head with the floor of the pool? Okay, that was an exaggeration, but nobody could object that it could not happen!

Warakuma Recreation Center

Well, it was not that Gen did not take pride in his academic achievement, but more like he did not want to look like a show-off. He scratched the back of his head, letting out a short, slightly embarrassed giggle before answering, "Thank you, Otonashi-san, I really didn't think that would happen." Even though he had done nothing but study the week before the midterms. Gen brought his glasses back to the top of his nose bridge by pushing one of the hinges with his ring finger, and as he did a quick white light seemed to flash out of the lenses, but it disappeared as quickly as it had come.

The moment Shizuka brought up the topic of Gen being there, the bespectacled teen seemed smaller and even a bit ashamed to fess up."Oh, I... Well, I wanted to go out and try something new... I haven't played sports or swim since forever, and now I have time to spare, so... Yeah, I'm here for that," Gen had been quick in replacing the original 'get out' with 'go out'. He stifled a relieved sigh and looked around and... again, saw someone he knew. It was someone from school, yet not a classmate. He wondered if Shizuka knew him. Probably from seeing him in the hallway.

"Um, Otonashi-san," Gen nodded his head towards Masahide in an attempt to be inconspicuous in case it was not him, but not entirely succeeding, "sorry to bother but, isn't that Saji-senpai from school?"

Warakuma Recreational Center

The sun shined and the wind blew gently and Gen had a smile on his face. Nothing could compare to spending a Sunday morning after midterms week outside the house. His mother had been pleased to hear that he had done tremendously well, or at least appeared pleased. Why would she not be pleased to hear that her son was only two points away from a perfect score? Oh yeah, that was how she put it: 'two points away'. But at least that was more than enough to keep her satisfied for a few weeks; hell, maybe even a few months.

Gen took his thoughts away from school for a moment to open the door of the Recreational Center. Due to the inexorable coming of summer, he was wearing a plain t-shirt that was blue at the collar and shoulders and faded to gray from mid-chest down. Besides that, a pair of jeans and his sole pair of casual sneakers. The only other footwear he had was the school's reglamentary shoes, and he had to leave those at the entrance before getting in. He remembered how he had outgrown two pairs in his second year of middle school, when he had quite a growing spur. The funny thing was that Gen's mother threatened him to make him go barefoot if he kept outgrowing shoes. Like, you can't stop growing when you're a teenager, Mom! Or so he would have liked to point to her.

As soon as he entered the lobby, Gen saw someone that caught his eye. Or rather, it was impossible that it did not catch his eye, for it was someone he knew and saw on a regular basis. However, the context was different, and she seemed so strange without her school uniform that Gen needed a moment to remember just who she was. But her name came to him; they were in the same class, after all. Gen walked up to Shizuka, waving at her. Even though they were not exactly quite acquainted to each other, ignoring her would have been plain rude, and being exaggeratedly friendly all of a sudden would have been awkward; but a few words with a school acquaintance had never heard anybody.

"Hello, Otonashi-san! Didn't expect to meet you here," Gen offered as a greeting, looking down at her from his standing position. "Good job on the midterms, by the way. How've you been?"
