So they had decided on sneaking. Unfortunately, pure stealth could only get them so far. They picked their way around the chilly pipes beneath the sink, but all they came up with at the end was a wall and an ogre guarding it. The head chef might have pent most of his time moving between places to gather ingredients and micro-manage his underlings, but he frequently and unpredictable returned to this particular work station time and time again. It made a trip across the open floor they would have to take unappealing to say the least.

Link thought for a minute about how to get past when one of the carts rolled on by. He wondered if they could just hide behind that, but that idea was dashed when the Head Chef walked around it on his circuit about the kitchen and scooped up a long slab of meat. That plan wasn't as safe as he'd like, but he looked back at mirage as another idea entered his head.

"Mirage, do you think you could stick a dart to that things wheels as it comes around the corner?" He asked, pointing the kitchen cart as it rolled past, then back at the corner they had come from. He could imagine the thing trying to roll with the dart sticking longways out of its wheel, tilting up and over and spilling fresh food all over the floor as it crashed into the opposite corner from the stairs. Or just stopping because of the dart and having the other cart crash into it. Either way it would draw eyes, maybe even anger if the Head Chef was as hot headed as he seemed, and that would take eyes off the corner they were trying to get to. "Try to do it right after the big lumpy one takes something and we could have a fight on our hands."

He wondered what would happen if the chefs got steamed enough. Would one of them end up on the menu then?

"After it tips shoot three more darts under here so the first one disappears. Then we can make a break for the stairs."

Linkle considered Albedo's idea. They were after a woods witch. Witches didn't show up too often in the legends she knew, but when they did they were usually helpful. If a little capricious sometimes.

Contrary to his expectations Linkle didn't show any obvious discomfort at Albedo's plan. To a certain part of her it made an awful lot of sense. After all, if she heard something going after her girls she was going to come running. At the same time, though, that was the problem.

"Mr. Tuley said the witch loves the animals around here like her own kids. I get how she feels. If something was hurting my Cucoo's, though, I wouldn't show up looking to talk. I'd be spoiling for a fight. I wouldn't consider listening to them until after I'd kicked their butts, and that's just me. She's a witch. She could cast a hex on us that turns us into animals or something." Linkle didn't believe there was anything that could stop her on her quest, but the sheer inconvenience of being cursed into animal form wasn't unheard of when it came to the hero. She could imagine herself as a little strawberry blond bunny hopping through the forest, trying to kick monsters to death as they searched for the magic mcguffin that could turn them back. Maybe an orb, or a flower.

She briefly considered what Albedo would be in this scenario (she was leaning toward dog) when she stumbled on an idea.

"Can't you see, you know, elements and stuff?" She asked. "Like how you saw I wasn't stuffed full of 'light' back at Grilby's. If we could just find the place that has the most 'nature' then that's probably where the witch lives. We could go up on a flower to get a better view, and if that's not high enough to see I have a way to let you jump way higher than normal."

If this didn't work or was impossible or something they always had the hunting plan to fall back on.

Link hated the smell in this vent. He hated how it made his mouth water, even knowing what most of that savoryness was probably made from. It smelled so warm and inviting her started to drool. How could it be so cold in this tunnel when there were roaring cooking fires so nearby?

At least the sound of the chefs arguing with each other had drowned out any noise made by their crawling, which meant that when they finally reached their destination they still had surprise on their side. He waited in the back of the line, agitations making his shake as much as the old. What was taking so long? He just had to keep calm when Mirage called back that they were expecting someone to try this this.

They had to give him the second, and as Link crawled out he got the picture. This time the food definitely was the trap, each tempting morsel baiting a pressure switch. Mirage carefully disarmed one, but Link should have figured he was after the cheese. He watch, jealous, as the boy gulped it down. That was the last straw for him, especially with all the smells coming from this kitchen. He pulled the carrots he had pilfered out of his boot. Meager though it was it would perhaps give him the energy to make sure nothing went wrong. Enough to cut, at least, when it came to that.

They didn't crunch when he bit into them, at least not until he got to the cores. They were practically mush already, not something he would even feed to his horses, but good goddess was he ever grateful for it now. He would have offered one to Geralt, but the look the boy gave Mirage when he made this same dumb dumb decision was enough to tell him where the Witcher stood on the matter. "I'll get cursed if it means getting the people that aren't out of here."

As Mirage and Geralt pitched their strategies Link studied the room they were in. There were four pairs of eyes shared between five monsters in this room, only one of which he knew. The grotesque chef, a relievedly normal looking one, and a man in a dirty coat that he was almost positive had been the angry voice they had heard. Besides them were a pair of one eyed food monsters that were turning the other chefs scraps into delicious looking fried fish and the walking teacups wandering the floor and tables. He hadn't expected there to be so many, and the sight of a losing battle temporarily quelled the violence in his heart.

"Geralt has the right of it. Look." He whispered, pointing out the stairway across the room. "We didn't hear any other voices before. If we can make it down there I think we'll catch the big bald one alone." His hand audibly tightened around the knife in his hand as he spoke. "Geralt's nail was able to go right into that fish monsters hide. We can beat him, quickly and quietly."

"Wait until the guy working on the fish starts working again. If we keep to under things and move when the food sorcerers are busy transforming scraps, all we should have to worry about is the teacups."

Linkle smiled a satisfied smile as she tossed the boy his purse back. "Like my Grandma used to say, 'You don't learn how dangerous a cucco is until you've kicked one.'" Unfortunately, though the cat gang had been successfully subdued none offered a way down except the obvious. Going down was faster and easier than climbing up though, and along the way they collected themselves a hefty bounty of pons. Linkle even managed to beat Albedo to the bottom this time by taking a few daredevil drops that weren't nearly as hard on her as being pile driven into an ice sheet.

When they were both finally down and stepping out into the cool air Albedo suggested that she ride back and by a couple more badges with their earnings. She was going to argue that they could just pick them up on the way back, but when Albedo mentioned he wanted to sketch the village anyway she reconsidered it. "All right." She shouted behind her as she ran off toward the rope, whipping out her chain and zooming on up back to goat village.

It was lucky for both of them that there was clear line of sight between the blue flagpole and the badge seller, or else Albedo might have had enough time to paint a mural of the village.

Linkle returned a short while later, two shiny new badges pinned to her belt. The first was the stylish and purportedly bombastic Kombat Badge. She had no idea what it actually sounded like, but if it was as loud as advertised she knew just the person it belong with. She had no idea it even matched his naming scheme.

The other was...

"Hey Albedo!" She said, bounding up to him as she put the finishing touch on his sketch. "Check this out." She stood next to him and reached down to her belt to hold a thumb on the other badge. In a flash of light a floating, light blue camera flew out and hung in the air in front of them. "Smile!" She said, pressing down on the badge again. There was a quick click, then a few moments later the slot on the front dispensed a picture of the two of them. She snatched it out of the air as it flutter down and showed it off to him. "It's a magic Pictograph." She said, handing him the picture before digging into her sack and producing a few more photos that she showed proudly. There was one of her and the Badge Seller, one of her throwing's up peace signs with a pair of the villagers flanking her, one of her with a rather disinterested Goat caught walking halfway out of frame, then another that was the goat by itself. Still others were just pictures of the nearby homes, scenery, and a few random shots of the sky or half a villager with the subject just barely in frame. "You got me thinking just now... I know we move pretty fast. You keep finding things that you like along the way, but then we have to move along before you have a chance to really check them out because we're on my quest. So, I figured, whenever you find something you think is cool just say it out loud. Go 'Linkle, pic!' and I'll pic it! Then you can study it whenever you want."

With that she put away the handful of photos, not bothering to take back the one she had given the Alchemist, before holding the badge again to put the camera away. With that they were on their way once again, descending along the rope line down, down, down, below the clouds.

It wasn't long before Linkle had reason to use her new toy again, as vibrant color rose up out of the whiteness to meet them. She practically bounced on the grass as she landed and gawked at the natural beauty around her. The camera was out presently, spun in a few different direction and snapping indiscriminate pics. There was no need to be choosy when every direction was beautiful. "Reds a very powerful color. No wonder a goddess lives here. If I were a goddess I would."

She was so taken in that she didn't notice that they had landed in someone's front yard until they drew attention to themselves with a friendly greeting. A small furry man living in an enchanted forest in a small hut that almost blended in for the vegetation covering it. This was the thing fairy tales were made of.

She squatted down to speak to him at eye level. "Nice to meet you. I'm Linkle. This is Albedo." She figured this man must be a helpful sort from the way he spoke and how he wasn't all that surprised by people landing so close to his house. She hoped the cats hadn't been taking advantage of him. "We're here seeking the aid of the Goddess Freya. Do you know where she's living around here or the best way through the forest?"

The only thing that kept Link from being the first person into the vent was that he was currently puling at the knife the butcher had imbedded in the leg of the table with a frantic, mad desperation. He put one boot up on the leg, gritting his teeth as he wrenched at the blade with everything he had. The fact that it had sunk in so far was a testament to the butchers strength and in any other situation that observation might have given him pause, but he hardly even registered the thought. It didn't matter how large you were, there were places you could cut that made it impossible to get back up and Link was going to make those butchers feel every single one of them if only he could draw the sword.

It was funny, a few minutes ago he had almost hated Sakura when he had realized how right she was. He had just about been ready to dig in back at the cafeteria, the only thing stopping him being her pointing out that all the most capable members of the group had already partaken. That was the only reason he was on the hungry side of the group divide, that hesitation she had inspired. That was all it took for the decision to be made for him. He had snuck a couple of carrots when they were making their way through the pantry, shoving them into his boot just in case it got so bad he couldn't move, but that was it. He was starving. He was tired. He was too weak to draw the sword. He was too weak to save anyone.

Suddenly he felt a pair of hands wrap around his own. Looking up he saw Glenn take up an position beside him, gripping the knife and joining in on his puling. Had Glenn always been taller than him? It didn't matter right now, because between the pair of them they were strong enough. With a dull scrape the sword came free, sending them sprawling backwards. Link was barely on the ground for a moment before he was back up, adrenaline and rage and pure terror powering him as he ran across the room dragging the sword behind. He didn't stop to thank Glenn for the help before diving headfirst into the vent and dragging himself as fast as the ones in front would let him.

He was going to stop it this time.

He was going to stop it dead.

"HA!" Linkle said as she jumped off the icy pillar and landed amongst the cats, brandishing her gun as she did so. She couldn't help but feel disappointed when they scattered about the room to hide, and after Albedo stored his sword she lowered the firearm to let it hang on her shoulder and stepped forward to pick up her bows from where the cats had dropped them. Holstering them again, she had to agree with Albedo. "I was expecting some kind of boss cat or something." She said, hands on her hips, but cracked a short smile when she saw that one of the cats had drawn a crude self portrait in the wall with crossbow bolts. This whole setup they had here was too cute, way too cute for the hideout of a band of crooked thieves. More like a clubhouse for a bunch of kids that liked to play bandit.

Linkle had some experience with this. There was hardly a boy in her the village that hadn't, at one time or another, gotten covered in tiny boot prints for some naughtiness they had perpetrated in the sight of the villages smallest hero. If it was like that, though, these cats were playing a dangerous game.

As Albedo looked for a way down Linkle walked over the cat she had seen playing with her crossbows, who was cowering under a cushion. She bent down and, doing her best to copy the tone Imani had taken with her earlier, ripped the pillow away. "Hey, cat?" She said sternly as the thing jumped up. "If I hadn't stopped myself down there I would have kicked your head clean off your body!" She stood up to her full height. "I have a gun! I have skulls for eyes, and million voices in my head telling me to kill you! Maybe this was a cute game back where you're from, but there are dangerous people around here! If you had tried this on a guy I fought yesterday, he wouldn't even have climbed up like this. He would have demolished this whole windmill with one punch and never even would have thought about you again."

Maybe that was a slight exaggeration, but sometimes you had to put the fear into a kid to make them mend their ways. If you went out at night you got eaten by a Wolfoes, if you messed around in a Cucco coup you got pecked to death, and if you robbed the wrong adventurer they would kill you no matter how cute you turned out to be.

She leaned in close. "There are people trying to fix the world and get us all home, so until they do just hang out in your clubhouse, read you books, and don't pick fights." She sighed. "Now where's Albedo's pouch, and how do we get down from here quickly? We have somewhere we've got to be tonight and lots to do before then."

Link was the last to balance his way into the elevator, tilting back and plopping down on the floor almost as soon as he had crossed the threshold to safety. The doors rattled shut behind him, and as their dogged foe lamented their escape he couldn't help but grin. The big guy could wait and hope all he wanted, but Link agreed with Bowser; there wasn't going to be a next time for any of this.

Ironically as the elevator began to go up he started to come down, down, down. It was less of a steady descent and more of a terminal velocity crash as the hunger, pain, and exhaustion that he had been able to shake off when faced with certain death all came roaring back to make themselves known. He glanced over at his right arm, the sleeve and shoulder of his bright little uniform tunic frayed and gull of holes. Under it he could feel island of agony that flared to life whenever he moved it, and while Blazermate was able to sooth the pain his shoulder still felt stiff when he rolled it. His makeshift shield had gotten the worse of it though, the unique pattern on the front being burned off. He hoped it was still structurally sound, but he wasn't going to be surprised if the thing shattered under one attack. He held it up to the Cadet. "I'd return this, but I kind of ruined it." He said, half-joking.

He knew he should be doing something on the way up. Something to prepare for whatever horror this place had in store for them. He thought about trying to detangle that mess of cords Glenn had brought down, maybe tie them into functional ropes they could use in the next trial, but he found he really didn't have the energy for it. So he just sat, the hunger seemingly growing stronger and stronger as they ascended, until he heard the doors open behind.

Link struggled to pull himself up as the others started filing out around him, until he felt a helping hand reach under his armpit and help pull him to his feet. Glenn, still not as tired as any of them despite the pain he had put himself through, helped Link out of the elevator and into the hall beyond. There were, at least, no monsters waiting. It was just a short hallway, but from the way they felt it may as well have been the entire Gerudo Desert. It wasn't long before Ms. Fortune collapsed, lamenting that this was it. While it certainly felt like that was the case he was among the ones that wasn't going to accept that. There was no way he was letting anyone starve to death in a hallway. He shucked Glenn's arm of his shoulder and pointed down at the stricken cat girl. "Help her, she needs it more." He said, shuffling around to the other side of her to help Glenn drag her if they had to.

As it turned out, she didn't need it. As he leaned down to pull her up he heard her whisper a single word. "Food?" He repeated in a hoarse whisper, but he didn't get an answer. As though she had spotted an oasis Ms. Fortune's discovery had given her a burst of energy. She rose by herself, leading them to the barred window that lined the side of the room, and found a way to scramble up to bars and attempt to force her way between them. As he got closer he could see why, just over the rim of the window. Food was silhouetted in the dim light, piles and piles of it, stuck there behind the bars. In that moment, as his mouth watered incessantly and his stomach let out a gut wrenching rumble, Link had never hated anyone like he hated the Lady for putting this here. He wondered if it was really possible to live off spite, at least long enough to take vengeance on the person that had taunted them so.

He didn't even see that Ms. Fortunes efforts had been rewarded, at least now until he heard her chewing. He looked over at her, cheeks stuffed, with a look of shocked betrayal. That greedy little kitten, she hadn't even offered to share her...her...whatever it was that she had managed to palm! It took Mirage tp bring him back to his senses, reminding him that the food was absolutely not safe. Not that that stopped most of the Koopa Troop. Bowser started trying to pry the bars apart in desperation, buy Junior and his pet were the real solution. The Pikachu things long arms reached out and grabbed a bunch of dishes, bringing them dangerously close as it, Bowser, and Junior tucked in. He was sorely tempted to join in, but Kamek was right. This was...no.

"If the food was the trap," He started, looking into the room and mysterious children sitting within. "Why wouldn't she just have it out? In this room? Why separate us from it?" If it had just been sitting in front of them the moment the elevator opened there was no way he would have been able to resist it. Ms. Fortune and the royalty definitely wouldn't have. As it stood, it took a little ingenuity or the kindness of strangers to get the food. No, the bars were meant to keep them from the food and keep those silhouettes stuck in that room. The cafeteria door was locked. The door in their hallway wasn't. Kamek and Rika questioned them, briefly, before turning his attention to getting out the keys they had found. Link took one, an idea of their use percolating through his mind.

He stepped back to the bars, calling in a whisper to the one they had been talking too. "Hey, can you come closer into the light? I just want to make sure you're not another monster." Link held up the key to show it to the silhouette. "Because we're breaking out of this place, and if you want to work together this key might unlock that door keeping you in there. Any information you can give would be invaluable."

"He hung back just to laugh at us." Linkle said, offended, as Albedo made his way back across the bridge. This area was obviously the trickiest one yet if she had caught up to Albedo here. The stuff here was apparently outside of his considerable wheelhouse. She took a around look at every element of this last gasp of the obstacle course, trying to figure a way through it. Those fans would be a problem, but maybe she could do something about those. There was that one legend where the hero counteracted strong winds and fans like this by wearing heavy boot that stuck him flush to the ground, and while the boots she had it her bag might not be that heavy exactly they might still...be able too...

"Wait." She said slowly. She stepped out onto the bridge, being mindful to stop before treading on the blue blocks like Albedo had instructed, and took another thorough look at all the obstacles. Blocks that were safe, and blue blocks the dropped you into the abyss. Spinning fans, designed to knock you off ledges with strong wind. Pillars, hanging from the ceilings that...

She shouldered her rifle and aimed at one of the pillars that was further away, letting off a few bullets that plowed into the bottom of it. Like she had been expecting the bottom piece, the size and shape of a millstone appropriately enough, slowly slid down and dropped off the bottom. She followed it as dropped and smashed into the floor below, the crash exemplifying her realization. She turned back to boy, unreasonably excited. "I think I know where we are." She said, running back to him. "All this stuff was what the hero faced in the sky city in the legend of the Twilight Princess! This is part of a dungeon. Look, look!" She said, pointing up at one of the bronze plates attached to the pillars. "See, that's got to be for a hookshot. It's this cannon that shoots a claw with a chain on the end, and it pulls you to stuff. I had one once, its super fun. He used it to traverse this dungeon and slay a giant dragon!"

Which meant that without a hookshot they were at a significant disadvantage in trying to get through here. More than that, though, it meant that this was Hyrule. They were standing in Hyrule right now. Those thieving cats were making their hideout in Hyrule.

Her brow furrowed. "I'm not playing by cat rules on my home turf." She said, dropping to a crouch and pressing her palms to the ground. "Hold on to me. If their hideout is right up there lets surprise them." Her hair flashed blue as ice began to spread out from her palms, forming a square much like the ones they were standing on. If Albedo had no objections she was going keep growing the ice under her, creating an ice elevator that carried them rights to the next floor and leaving this section unmolested and mostly intact.

So Link had been wrong. The monster did have a ranged attack, one that could fly to the very roof of the depths. The fact that he had been saving it until now, right when they were on the verge of escape, probably meant he couldn't do it that often. That was cold comfort, as the rain began to fall and wash away the exhilaration of Mirage ripping Ms. Fortune from the jaws of death. Those magnets were really something, but they did nothing against the acid now scorching Mirage's back as he shielded the cat girl with his own body.

Luckily for the both of them their Guardian was on hand to pull them out of the fire. Blazermate scooped the pair of them up in he arms and carried them across the gap to the elevator before they could be entirely eaten. Geralt hadn't even waited that long, clearing the gap as soon as the downpour began. Glenn and Jr were hard at work literally throwing their less athletic allies into the open door, and Sakura sprinted forward to build a bridge that would take the rest of them to safty.

For his part Link was thankful that he had taken the time to put on his stupid looking helmet, because at least none of the drops of bile that were burning into his arms and shoulder were landing on his head. He probably could have kept himself high and dry with his makeshift shield, but as he had begun to run instinct had kicked in again. He held it outward, trying to cover Peach, Bella, and the Cadet as they moved. It would be cramped, but it was better than being totally exposed.

He saw Bowser jump into view as they approached, apparently having the same idea as he did but with a far sturdier umbrella, and with him that seemed to be everyone. Link would usher the others across the bridge before he piled in himself.

As the pair of them climbed Linkle was able to keep up, maintain a distance of just a little behind the scholar through death defying leaps, close shave shorcuts, and riding on anything that looked as though it was moving upward. So it was that when she reached the point where things in the Old Mill were getting weird, Albedo was already sailing onward and upward on a snakelike trail of green blocks.

She watched for a moment before looking around to take in the stuff just hanging around in the air. Linkle wasn't a mill expert, but she had been inside the village mill enough to know that floating blocks and squares couldn't have anything to do with grinding grain. They hung there without any sort of apparent reason for staying afloat, like those islands they had fought the dragon or that path they had followed to Peach's castle after they had first woken up. How many world had blocks that just hung like this?

She approached one of the panels, following the trail of them leading across to another beam with her eyes. Hanging near that beam was another of those green blocks. "Yosh!" She had to keep up the pace. No way was she letting Albedo take on those cats by himself. There was only a short gap to get across before she got started, so she took a step back then rushed forward and jumped for the red panel.

Immediately she learned that this was a dirty trap, because as soon as her feet left the ground the panel swung around under her. Now there was a blue panel covering the gap she had been trying to leap and the place she had been aiming for was now a painful one way trip back to either the first floor or the basement depending on hard her head was.

Wait, there was one thing! Linkle reached out and her descent came to an abrupt stop as she grabbed ahold of the red bar the panel had been set in. Now she was the one hanging in the air, and as she did she got a good look at just how high she had climbed already. She tilted her head up, spotting the next panel across from her, and scowled. That must be why the cats had their hideout all the way up here. Even if they fell due to one of these devious cat traps they would just land on their feet and walk it off. Clever cats.

Too clever by half! If these cats wanted to hurt Linkle they were better off stabbing her in the back just the prophesy foretold!

Linkle started to swing back and forth, kicking her legs out to build up momentum before letting go and flying across the gap to the next red panel. Catching the edge, she pulled herself up onto it. She stood on it for a bit, keeping near the edge, just waiting for it to drop out from under her. Surprisingly, it held. In fact, now that she was looking, all the panels in her path seemed to have flipped. She waited for a little while longer just to make sure there wasn't some sort of timer these things worked on, then reached out her foot and tapped the center to the panel she was on. When it didn't have any give at all she was confident enough to step forward onto the panel proper and start planning for the next one. There had to be some kind of trigger, and she had a inkling about what it might be.

The next panel was red again, and Linkle again took a running jump for it. The panel flipped over again, but Linkle was ready for it this time. She splayed her legs as she soared though the air and managed to land one boot on either of the bars that had previously held the panel. She pinwheeled her arms a moment to keep her balance in this split she had landed in. "Jumping is the trigger." She said, looking halfway between pleased with herself for guessing correctly and disgusted with the people who set this trap. "What a nasty trick."

She started moving her legs, carefully inching herself forward toward the opposite panel, when she had a better idea. "Imani." She called.

The sniper appeared in a cloud of smoke on the opposite panel, crossbow already primed to shoot, but the second she caught sight of Linkle's precarious position she dropped the weapon to her side. "Bleeding Hell!" She said, reaching out and grasping Linkle's outstretched arm before pulling her over onto her panel.

"I don't thank you often enough." Linkle said as the older women leg her go.

"Well, I don't hang around for it." She replied. She seemed to want to disappear on that note, but something caught her eye and she managed to hang on for a bit longer the usual. "Linkle." She started, and something in her tone made Linkle straighten up. It was the tome of someone that expected to be addressed as Captain, Commander, or perhaps just Ma'am. "You've managed to lose your primary weapon."

Linkle glanced down at the empty holsters in her boots. "They were stolen, Ma'am. There were cats, they were invisible, they took us completely by surprise." She said nervously, pointing. The snipers eye followed her finger, observing Albedo as he platformed higher and higher. "We're getting them back right now."

"Double time, then." The woman replied curtly as she began to vanish.

Linkle sighed with relief as the sniper dissolved into smoke. She definitely felt like she had just been saved from a proper dressing down, granted a reprieve only because Imani's time in this world was too short for her to built the momentum required for it. As if she needed another reason to get their stuff back.

Now that she knew the trick, though, these panels were nothing. She practically sprinted across the remainder, making it to the other side before hoping on the waiting green block. This trick, thankfully, wasn't a mystery and she was able to ride, jump, sprint, and leap her way up the tower as she followed after Albeado.

Link couldn't be happier that none of his ideas were necessary as everyone started coming back up to the relative safety of the catwalks. He was no stranger to running away, there was no reason to stick around for a losing fight if you didn't have anything keeping you there. Seeing as everyone was either making their way down or climbing back up every second they lingered was another opportunity for the monster to find a way to entrap them.

This point was proven when, as they made their way to the elevator, the monster pulled his best possible move. He jumped up and ripped the area connecting the catwalk to the elevator away and, worse than that, took Ms. Fortune with it. The cat girl landed messily on the monsters back, Blazermate thankfully providing a distraction so he didn't just roll over and end her right then and there.

Rescue efforts began immediately. Mirage traded his dart gun for Sakura's magnet, instructing her to make the bridge while he rescued Ms. Fortune. Sakura, instead, followed Mirage and set about creating an alternate escape route in case Mirage's idea failed. He and Geralt were right behind them, even if there wasn't really anything they could do. Their minds had all be drawn away from the problem of how to cross to the elevator. The idea of leaving someone behind was that unacceptable.

Among all this high drama no one seemed to have noticed the green haired boy making his way down the belly stair tower, carrying a coil of tangled cables over his shoulder. Glenn arrived behind Kamek, Rika, and their animals just in time to watch Bowser take his leap and slam the heavy hammer head into the nail on the monsters back.

Luckily for Linkle and Albedo, this tower was far more of a straight shot than to the top of goat village. All you had to do was go up the grindshaft. Not even Linkle, as prodigious as she was at it, had ever gotten lost while climbing a tree. Provided, of course, that it was an isolated tree.

Not that it would have mattered if this was some kind of advanced multi-grindstone windmill because this wasn't a race, and to Linkle's mind she already had an A+ mountain guide who was super good at finding the fastest path up something. So when Albedo summoned up his Isotoma to carry him up Linkle grabbed onto the petals of the flower and was pulled up with him. As he hopped of Linkle swung herself and caught the edge of the gear with her hands, pulling herself up just before she could get crushed between the teeth. Hopping to her feet and jogging along in place she could see the boy being conveyed upward by a rope a higher gear to the shaft. Running up she jumped onto that too and followed him.

This was where things got tricky, because the next thing Albedo did was take a running leap and latch onto a board of planks. "Whoaaaa!" Linkle said as she dropped, watching him shimmy up the boards like a Skulltula and disappear over the top. No wonder he had beaten her if he was able to climb like that. It also meant she had to find another way up.

There was a big vertical spinning gear behind her, so she jumped up onto that instead. She supposed it wasn't all bad. Different paths, after all, meant more pons and the chance of catching cat people from two direction. Soon enough she didn't have to hold on to he gear to ride it, but that was undercut by the sight of the teeth of this gears partner steadily approaching. She looked around for a way forward, catching sight of a wooden block that was turning. She jumped out toward it, catching it by the edge and letting it turn until she was able to stand upright then walking backwards in order to keep from getting dumped off as she decided her next move.

Up above she could see Albedo balancing across a rafter, but also a descending wooden platform held by a rope coming near her. As it passed she jumped for it, holding onto the rope above to steady herself as it brought her down, down, down, before reversing course and going up, up, up, up!

As it reached the top Linkle stepped off onto a waiting beam and walked across it she came to another horizontal gear just below it. Connected to that one, though, was a gear that had a few wooden platforms stapled to its side. That should be a pretty good way up, even if it meant gong down slightly, so she lowered herself down and let the gear carry her into a position where she could hop onto one. It carried her under the gear she had just been on, causing her to swiftly duck so that it didn't knock he block off, before continuing on up. She could see, above her, another approaching beam she could use to get her bearing but she could also see Albedo again looking down at her from only a little ways above. She waved up at him.

To his surprise and relief the monster didn't immediately go after Ace. As a matter of fact, he had lost sight of the boy. Link couldn't help but grin. He supposed the loss of those eyes must have had a bigger effect than he thought. In any case in meant that he wouldn't have to take desperate action just yet.

Soon the monster found a target though, but not one that Link had at all expected. Another creature, something that looked like a man but couldn't be. There weren't any men down in this place, or at least none that weren't residents of the maw. It shambled on, a familiar looking substance leaking from the stump of its severed arm and a familiar voice emanating from its helmet. Mirage? No, that couldn't be. Could it? Had they found more of that goo in the command center? Could consuming it have done that to Mirage? No, Bowser hadn't known about the goo before talking to them. Besides that, the thing didn't seem like it was all there. It movements were strange, and when it raised its voice over the mulduga-mans to call out for Junior of all people the voice was distorted, scratchy. So what was it? What did it want? What on earth was he looking at?

He didn't get the answers to any of those questions. The Mulduga-man made sure of that. Either he didn't know either or the frustration he felt was enough to make his strike against his own allies. He turned and pulled his way to the decrepit thing, raising up and burying it under his mass. Whatever it had been it had at least bought them a little more time.

The real Mirage then made an appearance on the ground floor. Link had been too preoccupied with everything appearing down here that he hadn't noticed Mirage and Geralt's pathfinding expedition. He desperately wanted answers about what he had just witnessed, but that was a topic for another time. The real Mirage immediately expressed his disapproval with the plan, and Link had no choice but to agree with that. "You won't get any argument from me about that." He said. "It's really the only idea I've..."

He trailed off, catching sight of a small glowing moat of light on the ground floor. A spirit. That fish the mulduga-man had crushed on his way to give the other Mirage the same treatment. He looked around, spotting a handful of other shish flopping around in the shallow water. Useless on land. Just like he had been when he'd absorbed the abyssal.

"Actually, I've got another idea. Look" He said, pointing to where the fishes spirit floated. "He's already mostly fish anyway. If we can shove a hand full of these fish spirits into him it could make him as helpless as they are on land." That would still require getting close to him, and being sneaky enough to kill a bunch of fish without him catching them, but at the very least it wouldn't require getting in front of his mouth and if they did enough fish at once they might only have to approach him once. "I could still get him to chase me to distract him while you gather them."

He couldn't tell which plan was more dangerous and foolhardy, so he left the decision up to the ones that were already down there with the monster.

Being able to see where she was going without having to take the time to look out did wonders for Linkle's navigational abilities, and when Albedo arrived she greeted him with a high five and an "At least I beat you to the bottom." She was only half joking, she had half expected him to find some other shortcut back down to catch her by surprise at the flagpole.

Nothing the badge seller seemed to really interest him, so he left his collection of the green baubles in Linkle's hands. She pondered over the selection for a while, torn between practicality and something that would make an absolutely stellar present for Bowser. Considering where they were, though, and how they'd probably be able to gather enough Pons for a purchase on the way back up, she decided to splurge on the No-Bonk Badge for now. Between how they would be zipping around on the ropes and her fighting style not being stopped when you dive into something was going to come in very handy.

As she set the badge onto her belt she glanced curiously at the other thing that occupied it. It was kinda badge like, right? Curiously, she unclipped the Spiral Charm from her belt and held it up. "You seem like an expert. I got this off a fish monster, does it do anything or is it just neat looking?"

After another ride through the sky the pair landed on a snowy blue plateau holding the biggest windmill Linkle had ever seen. She was actually glad that the connecting line wasn't on this part of the mountain, because that meant they would get a closer look at it. She happily rode the flower up, hoping over without a care to the windmills section of the mountain.

They stopped to admire it for a moment, or at least admire it as well as they could with that fence in the way. "Huh?" Linkle said, examining it. "How are people supposed to get inside?" At first she though maybe the windmill was so big because the goats worked here, but she didn't think they were acrobatic enough to climb over the fence.

They were both so distracted by the windmill that neither saw the bandits until they were having their pockets picked. It took Albedo's shout to draw her attention, and she saw something orange briefly holding Albedo's notebook before it just became a shimmer in the air. She got a better look at what it was when another popped up behind him and swiped his pouch. It was a cat, some kind of little cat in boots and a bandana. Her hands went for her crossbows before she could even consciously think about what she was doing, but found them to be missing. She turned just in time to see another cat disappear with her new crossbows!

There was still a shimmer, though. The cat wasn't gone, just invisible. Reflexively she brought her leg up in a wide kick toward the swimmer before remembering what would happen if she connected. She hesitated, and that moment of hesitation allowed the kitty to duck her kick and sprint off after its partners in crime.

She stomped he foot down. "Argh, stupid world of light! I can't even give bad guys a few kicks without it becoming a real fight. It would be so much easier if they had stabbed me or something." She said as she jogged after Albedo. As it is the cats burglars hadn't actually hurt them, but there was no way she was going to let them get away with stealing her friends book. "I'll run them around!" She jumped up the hay bales after the felines, landing in the yard and walking with Albedo into he mill. "Listen up you cats!" She called to the rafters. "I've beat up bigger sneak-thieves than you before. The last one had a whole army on his side. Give back our stuff if you know what's good for you."
