Biography
Most people in Edenridge initially knew Keisha as none other than the virtuoso, sweet twin sister of Ty Carter, a young man from the Bronx who had begun to change in ways no one ever expected when he and the rest of his family moved to South Boston. He'd begun dealing drugs and running with the wrong crew when he was fourteen years old, and despite being the respectful and comical young linebacker that everyone knew him to be, started to make a name for himself around town in a way that deeply troubled his sister. He had always been very overprotective of Keisha, and did everything in his power to make sure that she and their single mother were well taken care of. Their father had left the picture when the siblings were seven years old; he'd beaten their mother so badly that Keisha had no other choice but to call the police. He was sentenced to four years in prison later that year, and was never heard from again once he was released.
Despite being just three minutes younger than her brother, Keisha always felt as though Ty treated her like a child. She was also tired of living in his shadow in Edenridge, and decided around the age of fifteen that it was time to make a change. As Sophomore year came to an end, and her Junior year finally began, Keisha slowly started to break out of her "shell." She'd started to dress a bit too inappropriately and pack on pounds of makeup, purposely attracting the attention of many of Ty's friends, both on the football team and in the streets. She'd even gotten into a brief relationship with one of the latter, resulting in her losing her virginity at the age of fifteen. When Ty found out what was going on between the two, he beat the boy senseless until he'd promised to never step foot near the two of them again.
Because Keisha had started to fall in love with the boy, she slowly but surely started to resent her brother and "act out." She'd stay out late partying with older teens, smoking and drinking until she passed out. She'd have a new boyfriend or girlfriend every other week, and didn't really keep up her grades. She'd even found herself in an abusive relationship at one point, but got out of it when her big brother came to the rescue. She'd get into countless shouting matches with her mother, and didn't really care much about what happened in the future; she'd already given up on music, so by then she was just going with the flow. It wasn't until after her brother was shot and killed that things finally reached their turning point.
Charlie Decker. That was the name of the very first boy she'd ever had real feelings for, despite constantly insisting to those around them that they would only ever be "just good friends." They were nearly inseparable during their first two years of high school, only to become strangers when Keisha ditched him for a different crowd during their Junior year. Keisha had been walking to the girl's bathroom when the first shot rang through the air, echoing in the silent halls. As if rehearsed, Keisha instantly sprung into action: she sprinted into the bathroom, went into an empty stall, locked the door, sat on the toilet with her feet on the seat.... It was a total miracle that she'd managed to evade Charlie on that dreadful day; she knew for a fact that one of those bullets was intended for her. Her entire world turned upside down, however, when she came to the realization that he'd settled for taking her big brother in her place.
With Ty gone, Keisha didn't want to stay in Edenridge a moment longer than she had to; the place only gave her bad memories. She spent that Summer after graduation holed up in her bedroom, mourning her loss. And when August rolled around she packed her things, headed for the first (and only) college in NYC that would accept her into their music program, and found a part-time job in a record store to help pay for some of her expenses. A year later, she's still pretty traumatized from everything that happened Senior year, but has managed to turn things around in a positive way. And while starting to feel like her "old self" again, she still does not look forward to going back home for the Summer, and hates that she can't afford to stay on her own.
