Donna Troy, Funeral of Wesley Dodds

Last but certainly not least to arrive for Wesley’s funeral was the royal party from Themyscira. Leading the way of course was Diana. And even though she was heartbroken at murder of Wesley, she was still the proud and regal Queen of the Amazons. Heads turned just as soon as she entered, and as the party continued onwards, members of the League came forward to quickly exchange a friendly word her.

Following close behind her sister was Donna, the Amazon Polemarch, and Donna’s aide Juno. Unlike her sister, not nearly as many came forward to greet Donna, but there were still a few that she hadn’t seen for a very, very long time. Dick waved, while Kori gave her an extended embrace as the party passed. It was an unfortunate fact of life that funerals tended to be one of the few times most of the older members of the League gathered together these days. And despite the tragedy of Wesley’s death, many were happy to see old friends, colleagues, and yes, even family.

She saw him waiting under a tree just a bit out of the way. Robert had been chatting with a League member Donna didn’t recognize, and when he spied her, he excused himself. He was taller than Donna, at over 6 feet and his frame was lean and muscular, a gift from his Amazonian heritage. He was handsome to say the least, and dressed in his red and white Darkstar exo-mantle he looked every inch the hero, even despite the black armband.

But to Donna he was much more than that. He was her only son, and despite the subdued atmosphere, she couldn’t help but be happy to see him. It had been too long since a visit, their most recent attempt dashed with the invasion of Thailand.

“Your Royal Highness, Polemarch” Robert said, bowing slightly to his aunt. Even though they were family, protocol still had to be followed, at least initially. However, with that out of the way. Robert immediately dropped all sense of formality.

“Aunt Diana,” Robert said with a huge grin, “you’re looking wonderful, as always.” Diana leaned forward to briefly embrace her nephew, “Flatterer,” Diana said with a smile. “It is good to see you Robert.”

Diana disengaged and glanced back at her sister. “Don’t take too long you two,” she said with a brief grin before moving on.

“Hello, mother,” Robert said after his aunt departed. He kissed Donna on the cheek before the two embraced in a big mother-son hug.

“It’s been too long Robert,” Donna said.

“I know, I know, but you know how it is,” he replied.

“Yes, I do,” Donna said, a slightly sad tone in her voice. She still regretted all those years she had missed being there for her son. Mother and son disengaged and Donna took a step back.

“You look good,” she said after she had visually inspected him.

“Thanks,” Robert quietly replied, a little embarrassed. His mother might be a mighty Amazon warrior, but she could also be such a mom sometimes.

Donna turned to move onwards, giving Robert a chance to sneak a wink and a quick smile to Juno before the three continued on. The brief walk gave Robert and Donna a few moments to catch up before joining the rest of the crowd around the funeral site.

As they merged into the crowd, Donna could feel a very slight tug at her uniform near her belt. Reaching down, she found a slip of paper expertly placed there. She shook her head and smiled. Any number of people in this crowd could have pulled off that trick, so she didn’t even try to guess who it was. She opened the note and was surprised to find what it said:

Polemarch-

Please come up to the tower and visit me after Wesley’s service.

I have a proposal you need to hear out.

It was hand signed ‘Albert’

“Luthor” Donna thought.

She hadn’t though about him in a while, and suddenly realized that he was not among the mourners.

“Probably a good thing,” Donna realized.

That name always seemed to bring controversy, which was the last thing needed at Wesley’s funeral. Albert claimed he was on our side, but trusting him was still hard to do for many members of the League, Donna included. And for all the good he did, he seemed too clinical and unfeeling most of the time. Still, her sister gave Luthor a chance to prove himself, and Donna had reluctantly as well, as long as he stayed away from the Amazon and her charges. And he had honored that request, at least until now

“What could he want with me?” Donna asked herself. It couldn’t be anything good.

She sighed as she closed the note and tucked it away, drawing a brief look of concern from Robert. Donna patted him on the arm to silently signal that she was all right. She would deal with Luthor later. For now, Wesley needed her attention…one last time.
At mention of dinner, Joanne’s stomach growled loudly to remind her that she had not eaten anything since she had left home.

“Yeah, dinner sounds good right about now,” Joanne said with a bit of a smile. “Let’s go.”

Joanne followed Syrus out of the cabin to find Smoke waiting for them on porch. The big gray wolf growled at Syrus, her hackles up. Though relieved that nothing had happened while Joanne was inside, Smoke was still not happy with Syrus.

Joanne immediately went to Smoke and knelt down beside her, stroking the wolf’s back. “It’s ok, Smoke…he’s friendly. He’s not going to hurt me.” Reassured a bit by her mistress, Smoke stopped growling, but still eyed Syrus warily.

“I’m sorry Syrus. Believe it or not, Smoke is usually very friendly,” Joanne apologized as she looked up to the other demigod. “But things have been crazy today, and she wants to protect me. I’m sure she’ll adjust, it will just take a little time for her to relax.”

Joanne switched to scratching behind Smoke’s ears and the wolf’s eyes half-closed in obvious pleasure.

“Hey girl, you want some dinner?” Joanne asked after a moment. Smoke’s eyes popped open at the mention of dinner and she whined a little, obviously hungry too.

“Well, come on then,” Joanne said. She got up and the three headed off to dinner.

While following Syrus to the dining pavilion Joanne could feel herself relax, and start to feel more comfortable with the camp. That was, until she reached the pavilion.

“Wow…” Joanne said in wonder. She had no idea there were so many other kids at the camp, even though it had been explained to her before. And it was clear they all came from all over the place. Of course, anything would be considered ‘all over the place’ to Joanne, since she had lived all her life in Alaska.

One of the servers came over to the three, and looked down at Smoke, who was sniffing and almost straining to go in.

“I’m terribly sorry, but we can’t allow your, er…pet in here,” she said apologetically.

Joanne’s eyes briefly bugged out, for the server had green hair and pointy ears.

“You’re a…” Joanne started to say.

“A dryad” the server said, finishing the sentence. “Yes…surprised?”

“A little,” Joanne admitted. “I’ve never met a dryad before.”

The wood nymph giggled before continuing. “Well, Daughter of Artemis, don’t worry, you will see plenty of us here, as we are the food servers. Anyway, my name is Ash.” She curtseyed a bit, and then pointed to a table where the two Hunters who had brought Joanne to camp were sitting. “And your friends are over there.” Seeing Joanne hesitate, Ash continued, “don’t worry, I’ll take good care of…?”

“Smoke,” Joanne said in response to the unasked question. Joanne knelt down and spoke quietly to Smoke for a second. The wolf’s tail stopped wagging and drooped in obvious disappointment, but it was clear she understood. Joanne got back up and nodded to Ash.

“Ok, Smoke,” Ash said. “Come with me and we can get you some food, ok?” The nymph departed with Smoke following her close behind.

Dana silently cursed the circus’ owner in French and Arabic after he left. She had come back to the circus only two hours ago from another night on the town and it had clearly taken its toll. Still dressed in her robe, Dana’s make-up was a bit of a mess, her long brown hair was hastily pulled into a pony tail, and she stank of booze and cigarettes. Dana had been looking forward to some sleep and a long hot shower before the afternoon’s performance began. Now she was stuck with this little chore, and was more than a little grumpy about it.

As Dana turned to head back to her room, the other performers knew well enough to leave her alone. The “Queen of Jungle Cats” was popular with the audiences, but a riddle to the rest of the performers. She was charismatic, extremely beautiful, and had a cat-like grace. Outwardly friendly, Dana was very private and her past was all but unknown. She also clearly preferred to be with her big cats. The other performers often wondered amongst themselves how Dana managed to go out like she did nearly every night, and still be one of the circus’ top performers.

“Damn fool,” Dana quietly muttered as she came back to her small room and shut the door. She shook her head angrily. “Who is going to be awake at this hour except crazy people,” she grumped. Dana opened up her wardrobe and began to rummage through it for something suitable for this morning’s task, but nothing appealed to her. After a few minutes of fruitless searching, Dana gave up and sat down on her bed.

She yawned and stretched. The bed was still warm, and very inviting. Dana was debating laying her head back down on the pillow and just forgetting about this morning’s tasks when she heard it…a faint woman’s voice whispering something. Dana hearing was considerably better than a normal human’s, but even as she concentrated on the voice, she couldn’t make out what was being said.

Abruptly the voice cut out as a loud KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK could be heard coming from her door.

“Dana!” The circus’ owner’s voice came through the door in a stern tone. “You better not be sleeping in there."

“I’m awake, damn it,” Dana yelled back. “Can’t you leave me alone for one minute so I look for something to wear in peace?!”

She heard him grunt in frustration and move on down the hall. Dana and the owner’s relationship could best be called a cold peace. True, Dana was a major attraction. But she could also be a major pain in the ass, especially after she came back from one of her nightly flings. Still, the owner put up with Dana’s antics as long as she performed well.

Realizing that she was not going to get any more sleep with him prowling around out there, Dana went back to her wardrobe and searched again, the woman’s voice forgotten. She finally settled on a red and black ensemble more conservative than her normal choices, and yet still sexy. Her choice made, Dana proceeded to get herself ready for this morning’s trek around town.
BLINK

Clarice looked over as the other students volunteered one by one and shook her head sadly. It was a pretty speech that Mr. Summers gave, just as good as the speeches Magneto use to give her X-men. And like those speeches, it motivated people to do the right thing. But the cost…

Clarice was used to combat and war, and was tired of it. She had fought practically her whole life as an X-men or an Exile. She had more combat time than anyone here, with the possible exception of Mr. Summers. She knew what it was all about: the pain, the destruction, suffering, fear, and…death, too much death.

These kids, Clarice though of them as kids despite being the same age, really had no idea what they were getting into. But the fact that they were willing to fight for what they though was right was what made them brave, if foolish. Clarice too was glad there was peace between mutants and humans on this world. That she would fight for it was never in any doubt. But she also knew that she would have to protect her fellow classmates if there was to be a future at all.

“I’m in, Mr. Summers, 100%” Clarice said as she stepped forward.
Syrus wore a grim face as she told him that she had found her family like that. Then he gulped down shock as she told him she had killed the thing he was after. He started shaking his head, "No there is no way. How? The Naga Umbra is very powerful." Syrus stood and thought for a second. "It hid itself from me and...waited...on you?" He looked at Joanne. "You aren't a hunter. The wolf...the bow and those people. You are a demigod of Artemis...an actual daughter." He shook his head and went over to her and pulled up a chair sitting directly in front of her. "Ok so what I know is that my mother had a vision. She is the only one who can because of a loop hole. I can do the same thing. She sent me to track a Naga Umbra or snake of shadows if you will. It's an envoy or sign that Erebos the primordial god could return. Why it's after you I'm not sure yet." He stared back at her waiting for her to process the info. @golani

Joanne wiped the tears away from her eyes, as her expression turned hard. "Syrus, I can tell you with no doubt I killed that...Naga Umbra thingie. I put so many arrows into it, it had no chance to get away." Joanne tapped her bow with her foot to emphasize that last statement.

"As for being a daughter of Artemis, that's what the two women that brought me here said, except that I was 'the' daughter, not 'a' daughter," Joanne noted. "And they were just as confused as you how that happened," she added with a small smile.

"Still," Joanne continued. "I don't understand exactly what you mean. Who is this Erebos guy?"

@soren
Joanne

Joanne suddenly looked a bit uneasy at the prospect, but she just HAD to know what happened earlier that day to her family.

“Ummmm, yeah,” Joanne said. “Let’s go in, I do have a question or two to ask you.”

Joanne followed Syrus in, instructing Smoke to wait outside the cabin. The wolf dutifully sank down to lie on the porch, looking up at both Syrus and Joanne with barely concealed concern as they headed inside.

Picking out a pair of bunks, Joanne and Syrus sat down opposite each other. Joanne put her bow down on the floor and looked at Syrus for a second before beginning.

“Soooo…” Joanne began. “I couldn’t help hearing your conversation with Lilith earlier, about you being in Alaska.” She looked away, obviously a bit uncomfortable. “I didn’t mean to spy on you, but it sounded like you may know what happened to my dad and aunt.”

“I found them,” she paused and swallowed. “Well, you know, dead. And whatever it was that killed them then tried to kill me. And it would have, if I haven’t been carrying my bow this morning. Instead, I killed it…I’m still not exactly certain how I did that. And then I found myself here.” Joanne looked directly at Syrus, as tears starting to form in the corners of her eyes. “Please, tell me what you know…“
