Stepping off the bus behind the oriental-looking blonde girl, Modlen adjusted her earbuds. There were only a select few styles of over-the-ear headphones she could wear that didn't start to hurt her ears after the first half hour and those styles were slowly starting to disappear. It was one of the many downsides to having pointed ears, Skullcandy wasn't too concerned on catering to the mutant demographic. Nevertheless, Moddy preferred to listen to music whenever possible, firstly so she could distract herself from her own anxiety and secondly so she couldn't hear the whispers and comments she knew were coming from passers-by. Even if they weren't saying anything, she was sure they were thinking it and the blaring music helped take her mind off that fact.
Looking down at the A4 printout, Modlen read the black-and-white ink directions to the Academy while using her free hand to reflexively adjust her goggles. They were a style of sunglasses used by bikers that were less likely to come off while riding, but Modlen, as with everything she wore, used them to hide as much of her appearance as possible. Next she reached up to pull her black hood over her head and make sure here face was still hidden. The hood was sewn on to the neck of a long-sleeved Mudvayne shirt with two slits cut into the shoulder blade area to let her wings through. Try as she might, there were just some things she couldn't hide.
The mutant girl sighed. Twelve hours ago she'd been at home with a lot less crap to deal with. She'd been a mutant all her life, that much she was used to. Or at least as used to it as any one person could be. But she'd always thought that was all. She'd seen mutants like Nightcrawler, Mystique and Beast in the news and thought that she'd just been unlucky like them, not that she was actually the child of Satan. Suddenly all those people who'd called her the Antichrist and the Great Whore bothered her even more.
Maybe dad's wrong? She thought to herself, Maybe my mother just looked like me and dad confused? She shook her head to clear her thoughts. She'd been fighting back these ideas the entire bus ride, there was no point in letting them overtake her now. Picking up her duffel bag and slinging it over he shoulder, Modlen reached down to make sure that her tablet was still in her camo cargo pants pocket before setting off, walking behind the young blonde girl.
