Current Pirates, monsters, magic, islands and no civilization to steal from. Hmm.

Now, what happens when you have a bunch of monsters that were living in a forest and they get transmigrated into a futuristic urban setting?

I know that few, if any, people on this site would be interested in it... but... I just got an idea for a SAO/GGO/XCOM/UFO crossover... fun tingles...

Life has never given mankind sufficient time... nor sleep... nor comprehension. If it had, we would have stopped trying.

It can be greatly refreshing to return to a thing that one has long loved.

Rapture is a reference to a game set in an underwater... failed attempt at one man's utopia. The games set there were in the Bioshock series. Big theme there was wild genetic manipulation... nasty and extreme stuff.
SUMMON THE FLYING SCHOOL BUS TRAIN!!!
Tired as I am, I'm still finding progress on my character to be fairly smooth. As long as I don't push it, he should come together well.

On the earlier ideas. These are my thoughts.

I agree with the general range of options and variety available. However, there's a couple things that I wanted to bring up that came to mind.

- With less large scale fishing per ocean area, the fish population will have exploded and super schools with millions of fish could easily be a thing.

- Larger fish could likely be more comfortable closer to the surface than previously known as well as being far more numerous.

- Glaciers and partially flooded caverns, sub-oceanic ones, could also make for discovery events that spark interest. Glaciers would be a source of isolated and preserved fresh water, high quality at that. Partially flooded cave systems could be home to species of crustacean that are difficult to find with current technology in the open ocean due to their preferred depth. Also, crabs would have returned to their pre-harvesting sizes. That means full scale king crab.

- The possibility also exists for illegal slave traders who execute swift night raids on settlements and slip away in the night to sell their catch elsewhere. (This would tie into my prospective character's backstory, if I manage to get organized enough to officially join.)

- Also, shark leather armor would be fairly common among those who work in rougher occupations. The tiny teeth on the outer surface would discourage creatures from latching on and the toughness of the leather would make for decent armor anyway, especially if it's backed with layers of something thinner and cheaper.

- I recommend, as a starting scene, having everyone in the docks on a day when more business is done than usual. The business justifies their presence while also getting everyone in sight of the harbor for the arrival of something notable, a ship of some kind that usually means something important. Possibly a ship flying the flag of a known group of famous cartographers and explorers. This provides factors that unify the scene and keep all the characters thinking about the same general kinds of things. It could also be used to spark conversation and further plot development.
Okay, thanks for the hope. I share it!

That life expectancy is actually longer than I expected for the conditions. But, I guess that means that you'd find a fair number of 50 year old people in the cities and larger ship communities while those that old would be pretty rare in the tinier villages. So, the age range I'm probably thinking of... would be between 35 and 45 for a male. Old enough to be the oldest man in the room in more remote places but young enough that they'd still be considered 'marry-able' in the cities. Old enough to have well honed skills and young enough to use them well.
Question. What's the life expectancy of the various groups of people? What is old? What is 'September'?

I'm waffling yet... but I'm still developing a character, just in case.
Trace Retloth
Main Entrance Assault

Just as Trace was about to finish the sword wielder, that other lancer came charging around the corner and caught him at the same time. So uncommonly unfortunate was the bandit that he caught that other lancer's strike somewhere near the neck at the same moment that Trace's own lance pierced his chest through the side. It was an anti-climactic end to his final battle.

The bandit swordsman fell with barely a confused gurgle.

Trace didn't exchange much more than a glance with the other lancer before taking a place beside the main entrance. Both of them knew what they were doing and there were still enemies to slaughter, though not outside. Trace realized as he looked around that the remaining enemies all seemed to be inside the fort, or dying. Well, it would be a safer gambit with the other lancer involved. After all, there was no telling how that archer's horse would handle the interior... to say nothing of the rather savage wyvern.

As for Trace, he waited for long enough for the others in the immediate area to finish their business. In particular, he watched the other lancer. Depending on how he was trained, he might know the meaning of Trace's position. It was not uncommon for a pair of lancers to enter a hostile room in the same breath, side by side, before splitting up to face any foes on the flanks while their allies charged into the center. Trace was in position for his side. It remained to be seen if this other lancer would follow suit.

As one who has taken an interest in this, but probably won't be able to join due to other commitments, I would like to present some elements that might be worth thinking about. These are my opinions after looking at the visual reference gallery and reading the posts of others in this thread. I hope that they help with further fleshing out a world that all involved can enjoy.

Cloth as we know it would be almost impossible to acquire without farmland to grow plants for fiber, rope also would be very difficult to make. Hides of various larger aquatic mammals and fish would be far more available and durable for clothing. It is also possible to braid strips of leather into cords of a sort, though their uses would be more limited than twine or rope.

Metals would only rarely be used for weapons as they would be needed for ship repairs and such, provided that the ships in use are metal or use metal components. It would also be a very valuable trade good, comparable to gold.

For those settlements that lack electricity, illumination would likely be provided by lamps rather than torches or fires. Fluid fuels would be more available. However, the most likely candidates would be blubber based oils or fish oils. Alcohol would be needed for both drinking and medical applications. Using it as a fuel would be ridiculously wasteful... though some might resort to it if they have the need.

As a final note, shellfish would be rather difficult to find unless you were in quite shallow water. With such an elevated sea level, the available habitats for many species of shellfish would have dwindled drastically. However, they could be cultivated on sub-surface platforms or towed rafts that are attached to ships or other floating settlements.

I hope these thoughts are helpful... I also hope that things in both my rp schedule and my daily life get sorted out enough for me to actually apply to this. I just can't promise anything right now.

Femus was grateful to reach the branches that had seemed so very far above them before. They were indeed quite high up but the ascent hadn't been quite as stressful as he had thought. The branches were warm and the area was thick with nature mana. He would have to put his combat skill development on hold for the time being. This would be an excellent place to practice healing magic. In fact, he might be able to make progress on some kind of area spell in a space with this much mana available.

Looking back in the direction that they had come from, Femus spotted the group of pixies that had taken over his hollow in the Old Kao tree. Specifically, he spotted a familiar one. Well, that meant that they might have an ally if things came down to it... just... an expensive one. But, they lacked what they needed to really 'tame' that pixie for now. Now, sitting on the thick foliage that covered this forked branch and provided them with good visual cover from anything on the ground, Femus felt free to get this evolution thing out of the way. He would take stock and decide on other things afterward.

"Alright. We finally have a safer place to get this done." He said softly with a sigh of relief before speaking seriously. "I learned something about evolution that you should know before you make your own first choice. If you evolve from an immature form to another immature form, you gain less benefits and you can limit your peak potential. The system helpfully answered my request for a definition of 'increase potential'. I'm going to meditate before I start. Please take care of anything you need to before I begin evolving. I'll... be counting on you."

With that said, Femus began meditating. His goal was to meditate until he felt that he couldn't hold any more mana in his body. He concentrated on how it felt and flowed through him, seeking to increase his capacity and the speed of its circulation through his body as he had before. Only when he felt completely stuffed did he allow himself to mentally review the evolution options one more time.

Then he focused his will and decided on 'Adult Wisp'. It was time to experience what this whole evolution thing was.
@Stabby @Zeroth

The system truly responded to Femus’s requests, placing the points as instructed and displaying his options. It seemed that his recent actions had added a choice to his evolution options, one with a two star suitability rating as well. Still, that seemed largely based on what element he had trained recently. He intended to become fluent in multiple elements. Choosing a form that specialized him would be unwise. His foundation wasn’t strong enough for that yet. And, there was a word in there that he didn’t fully understand. So, he formed words in his mind again. “System. Please define ‘Increase Potential’ aspect of Adult Wisp evolution.” Hopefully he could get an answer that would settle his thoughts.

He followed Nira through the woods, carefully watching for anything dangerous while monitoring his own body and keeping a careful watch on the goblins. They truly were a divisive bunch, but their organization wasn’t bad. They actually seemed to have factored their own bad temperments into their combat strategy. Thankfully, they weren’t heading in the same direction that Femus and Nira were going and their cautious travel went smoothly.

Femus breathed a soft sigh of relief as they neared the tree. The trip hadn’t been very long but it had been nerve wracking for him. He was plagued the whole way by thoughts of what would happen if he were forced to start evolving in mid-air.

Seeing the tree up close was a welcome distraction. It was gorgeous and massive. He had never seen any tree that large and healthy before in either of his lives. However, the relief and wonder didn’t last long. The tree had a massive presence, or was engulfed in another nearby presence. Either way, it wouldn’t be wise to act carelessly here. Caution, caution and patience.

“Let’s try to avoid disturbing anything here more than necessary.” He whispered to Nira.

He knew that it could be dangerous to linger in front of the tree but he doubted that he could levitate high enough to reach the branches… way… up… there. He was suddenly grateful that he presently lacked a neck, it would have gotten a cramp looking up at those branches from underneath. But, many creatures could reach the roots, making them a bad ‘nesting’ spot for little magical creatures. He focused his will and used Magic Analysis and Plant Analysis on the tree and the moss. He also tried to use Magic Analysis on the air around the tree while staying alert for any signs of other creatures, nests, burrows, etc. in the area. An abandoned burrow could be very useful.

“Do you think we can make it to the lowest branches?” Femus said, asking and suggesting at the same time. It really would be a better option if they could manage it. “Or should we split up and look for some safe cranny to hide in for a little while?”

He had to get to a safe place quickly so he could evolve. It was uncertain whether time was actually ticking on that but it would be reckless to assume that it wasn’t. He was getting nervous. If he hadn’t been feeling the pressure, he would never have suggested that they split up right after arriving at a new and powerful place. Come to think of it, Nira had been the one to suggest splitting up every time it had happened so far. Though, they hadn’t been together for long at all. Still, clearly she was confident. That was good. Femus was unutterably grateful that he wasn’t facing this evolution on his own.

He was also itching to train here, but he didn’t dare to use more than the bare minimum necessary skills before evolving. With the health and size of this tree, the odds of there being holes in the trunk seemed low but he did take a moment while listening to Nira’s thoughts to look for one. The nature mana here should be very dense compared to elsewhere.
Trace Retloth
Main Entrance Assault

Battles never really go the way you want them to. The swordsman managed to dodge and even attempted a counter attack. Of course, Trace had plenty of time to read his moves and step aside, shifting his grip on his lance in anticipation and using his own evasive move to set himself up for an attack as soon as he evaded. This attack should be fatal. It was aligned with the enemy's vitals, the heart and lungs.

Trace had wanted to engage the axe wielder as well but he held himself back. If he turned to chase after him now, not only would the archer be in danger but Trace would have left his back exposed to the swordsman. That would just be foolish. The young lady archer would just have to survive a bit longer while he finished off this enemy first.
