Current Pirates, monsters, magic, islands and no civilization to steal from. Hmm.

Now, what happens when you have a bunch of monsters that were living in a forest and they get transmigrated into a futuristic urban setting?

I know that few, if any, people on this site would be interested in it... but... I just got an idea for a SAO/GGO/XCOM/UFO crossover... fun tingles...

Life has never given mankind sufficient time... nor sleep... nor comprehension. If it had, we would have stopped trying.

It can be greatly refreshing to return to a thing that one has long loved.

Hey, everybody! Just got past some computer problems of my own and noticed this. I need to refresh my memory and update Skrik's sheet before I really get going but I wanted to say high and let people know that I'm working on it.

By the way, @Jangel13, looking back at Skrik's gear I can't spot anything in particular that would be 'inheritable'. Perhaps an item crafted between the end of the last version and the start of this one would do? A sheaf (6 or so) of horn tipped javelins was a previously existing goal that would have been well within reach. Would that suffice?
I'm interested.

Femus's diligence paid off in modest but highly useful dividends. Additional details about the pixie species and the herbs that surrounded them gave efficient solutions to present issues. Firstly, the pixies were easily misdirected by new experiences and found Nira's spell fascinating. Second, they found the arrival of night a thing to fear. Third, the plants around them provided both knowledge about how magic behaved in nature as well as necessary resources.

As soon as the pixies were gone, Femus went called out loud enough for Nira to hear him. "Nira! I've found Healing Herbs and more Wild Kele for dinner. Could you help me by getting some claws or small bones from that Hobgoblin while I gather these? I'd like to try to make bone tools tonight. I think we'll need them if we're going to keep making things for ourselves. And, I think we should do some planning after we get back to the branches."

Femus was pretty sure that she wouldn't have a problem helping him but it didn't matter in any case. Dinner and medicine took priority over crafting projects. So, he took another close look at the plants, studying them the same way he would study an animal before butchering it. Where is its 'meat', the part that they would eat? Where are its 'bones', the strong structural parts that would resist harvesting and digestion alike? He wished for a blade, but the closest thing he had to a blade was his 'hands'. Lesser Force might serve well, but he needed to improve with it.

He thought of small creatures that had sharp limbs like mandibles or stingers. Then, he tried to imagine what it would feel like to actually have a pair of 'mandibles' instead of 'arms' in Lesser Force. To pinch and cut rather than grasp, push, and pull, this was his goal. He concentrated, keeping his glow suppressed but no longer focusing on matching his environment. Then, knowing that this was likely to be difficult and expensive, he willed more mana into his Lesser Force limbs and willed them to change their function for a short time, accepting reduced freedom of motion in exchange for the kinds of force he wanted. All he needed was to tighten the area of effect and increase the pressure to simulate mandibles. First, he tried on the Wild Kele. From this plant he tried to focus on gathering the parts closest to a creamy white while leaving the rest behind. He would try to gather at least four of these and would meditate if his mana ran low. If pinching wasn't quite enough, he would add twisting since they needed the food more than he needed the practice.

After this much practice, Femus proceeded to gather two of the Healing Herbs with the same pattern while also staying alert to the dangers of the oncoming of evening. They had to be quick if they were to be prepared and relatively safe for the night. Once everything was collected, one way or another, Femus would devote his energy to getting all of this little harvest up to that familiar branch. If things went well, there might even be time for another run before nightfall. But, as always, there was much to do and all of it was important.

Success was often the reward of determined effort wisely placed. Femus had managed to stay hidden. But, pixies are fickle creatures and Nira seemed to lack any actual plan for managing their attention span or forming a tamer’s bond with them. In short, this encounter had occurred before she could prepare for it. The antics of the pixies were becoming more agitated as their extremely limited patience began to wear thin. If things get bad enough, Femus might have to take action. But, for now he needed more information.

He began studying the pixies individually, using his own observation skills as well as his Monster Analysis skill. He also studied the surrounding plants, looking for anything that might have healing or injury treatment properties and using his Plant Analysis skill on them. While information was important, he maintained his concealment and presence suppression.

Femus realized quickly that his ability to multitask and meditate was insufficient to the task and abandoned his meditation efforts in favor of stealth. Constantly adjusting his own coloration and brightness to match the shifts in the grass took almost all of his concentration. No longer was he merely 'activating' his Suppress Presence skill. Now, he was expanding it, training it, trying to master it. Now, he was being one with his environment. He sought to match his breath to the air's movements, only being truly silent and still when his tiny fragment of the world was. He expanded his senses to give him as much awareness of his surroundings as he could so that he could match the characteristics of his environment ever more closely. He went so far as to try to match his own mana flow to the pace he had felt in the tree, in the grass. He sought concealment in oneness.

But, he did not close his senses or thoughts off to awareness of his changing surroundings. Even that which perfectly belongs can be stepped on and crushed. He had to stay alert and aware without compromising his concealment. Only then would he be able to gain an advantage over a possible threat that may approach, either now or in the future. Every breath was training, every adjustment of his color and brightness, every subtle movement and glance. The pixies would do what the pixies did. But, he was the grass and the soil, the moss and the breeze. All were things that he could feel on this tiny body of his as he hid.

Yet, as focused as he was, there were still three things that stood out in his mind about the pixies. The familiar one was looking for him. The other female was interested in Nira's dress. And, the male was interested in Nira. Well, that set of circumstances could be complicated, but Nira was in a uniquely well suited position to handling things. Femus would continue his training and concealment, watching and waiting.

Femus achieved success more rapidly than he thought, and gave him a result that was more than satisfactory for his first attempt at weaving. The pouch was even a bit bigger than what he actually needed. Maybe he could get an herb with healing properties to bear seeds next, perhaps while Nira was working on taming her intended pixie companion.

Wait, what's that?

It was at this moment that he realized what Nira had spotted. Pixie trio incoming. Possibly helpful, since the one was familiar, but there were at least two doses of trouble coming too. The hunting would indeed have to wait. Hiding could work if Nira could be distracting enough but Femus needed a contingency plan, a way to manage their attention if it did get drawn to him. Yet, there were no abundant flowers in the immediate area and the setup was wrong for a repeat of the flower shower.

No time for deep thought. Slipping away and hiding first. That was the priority. Pixies were far less likely to attack each other than they were to attack a wisp.

The color of Femus's natural glow was already pretty close to that of the herbs and grass nearby and he hadn't been moving much. So, there was a chance that he didn't hold much of their attention... or any of it. As Nira was advancing to distract them, Femus suppressed his presence and let himself sink down to the ground beside some taller grass before reducing his glow to try and match the light reflecting off the grass. If he suddenly stopped glowing, that would be more likely to draw the eye. If the pixies still noticed him then he might have to try something new with his weaving skills... maybe hair accessories... or a crown like with the flowers?

He kept a close eye on the situation while staying as effectively camouflaged as he could and plotting his own distraction ploy, just in case. Hopefully, Nira would be able to get the pixie's loyalty and get the others to disperse... or maybe she'd try to tame all three... Femus could only mentally shrug and concentrate on making sure his mana was full by quietly meditating while maintaining his concealment. It was hard, managing Suppress Presence and controlling his glow while meditating, but he gave priority to his stealth efforts and chalked up the difficulty to training.

At last, Femus could breathe a sigh of relief. He had the seeds. So much work for something so simple and small. And, even with all his efforts, it hadn't been enough until Nira had helped. Choosing grass-like plants that seemed to lack any strong effects, Femus used his crafting skill to try to make a pair of square patches from woven grass. He had seen a few woven baskets in the marketplace when he was still human. The method seemed to be a simple alternating pattern. Of course, with the small pouch he was trying to make, he would need to seal the seams and gaps well enough to keep the Blue Yill Seeds safely contained. The pouch would only be big enough for perhaps ten seeds. After all, Femus was planning on carrying this for a long time and had no belt or other easy method of carrying it.

"Having more support could be helpful. Hmm..." Femus murmured in response to Nira's words.

He worked on weaving the grass patches while thinking of how best to answer her. Finally, he decided on how to explain it. So, he began speaking while continuing his work.

"I gained the Mana Control skill during my meditation training, though I was focusing on capacity improvements I also made progress on it while trying to complete new spells. I focused on controlling how the mana moved through my body and the spell both, faster or slower, where it pooled and swirled, where it slipped and surged, gathered and dispersed. The skills we have can be used almost as easily as pushing a button in a video game. But, that method of use is the least efficient for training. You should be able to rapidly learn Mana Control by deliberately handling every step of the process of casting any spell or using any other skill that uses mana."

When the patches were done, he would weave the free ends of all the strands of grass together, joining the two patches on three sides while leaving one open. Then, he would use growth on the green grass to make the fibers and veins grow more, extending out of the grass blades themselves and then weaving them through the others to further tighten and strengthen the pouch with both the strength of the fiber and the mild adhesive of the leaking plant juices. The open end would still be left with loose ends of grass so that it could be woven shut after the seeds were placed inside. However, that would have to wait until the pouch had dried somewhat. It wouldn't do to have it encourage the seeds to sprout when it was only meant for carrying them.

But, in the end, this pouch was only a small side-project to make carrying the seeds more convenient. It was a more pressing concern to decide what the two were going to do for the rest of the day. They would need food and drink. Though, Nira had developed a very useful spell, it was probably not the greatest idea to be completely dependent on their mana supply for drinking water. Still...

"I'd like to take you up on that offer. A water spell of such utility would definitely be valuable. And... this is probably the best part of the day to keep a low profile. Though, we could hunt as well. It would be good to have other food than hobgoblin meat around. I imagine that this guy is going to attract scavengers soon enough... actually... I wonder if I could speed up the rot and bait in some scavengers to make hunting easier for a little bit before we leave. It could make things more dangerous, but opportunity comes hand-in-hand with danger. What do you think?"
