Since the 17th century Port Rush has been an economic giant on the east coast of america, boasting great industrial power and having a huge variety in terms of culture and race, it's population having become somewhat of a mixing pot due to immigration from Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and the large African-American presence in the city.
Port Rush, from the eyes of an everyday person, is a fairly pleasant city. Yes, the air could be better in the industrial areas of town, and there are petty criminals in Port Rush just as there are in any other city - but it's not the petty crime that plagues this town. It's the underground. Organized crime. Gang warfare. Drug trafficking. Racketeering. Corrupt policing. This city has it all, and it's all right under the nose of the citizens. They live in their suburban houses with lush green gardens without knowing that every day people are killing each-other in the back-alleys of the city.
It's been some time since the 'glory days' of the city. Some thirty years ago, a powerful Italian-American gang, the Gerbino family, practically ran every single piece of business that occurred within the city limits. In the 20s and 30s, they were unstoppable, and due to their great, unfaltering success, Port Rush prospered - meaning they made even more money. But like all empires, they eventually imploded in the late 30s, and Port Rush fell in to no man's land.
Ever since the Gerbino-era the city has been in a perpetual state of tug-of-war, several firms and families fighting for supremacy, hoping to claim the city for their own and recreate the kingdom that the Gerbinos once had. These gangs consist of many different creeds and cultures, most having immigrated from Europe or elsewhere.
In the Marina, one of the coastal industrial sections of the city, the Murphy firm resides - an Irish-American family who have held claim to the Marina for several generations, fighting off many other rival gangs for ownership of the region. Most significantly, they still held the Marina in the 30s when the Gerbino's were at their strongest. Now, the Murphy firm sets it's sights on expanding. In this time of conflict, they are as strong as any other family, and John Murphy, the 74 year old boss of the firm, wishes to see the city become his own.
---------------------
Basic concept is a family-based crime drama set in the 60s surrounding the Murphy family. Characters will range from the boss of the firm, to it's workers, consisting of loyal members of many years and actual blood of the boss, all the way to the family and friends of the firm who are not necessarily criminals, but fall under the firm's protection and therefore get thrown in to the action when it comes around.

Hi guys. Just wanted to run an idea past you all. I was considering an idea for a RP set around a crime family in the 1960s living in a fictional city that is populated by several secretive gangs that are in a perpetual tug-of-war for control of the city's industry and all that. I was thinking of having the focus on the characters and their relationships. How the high-stake situations affect them. Friendships made, and friendships broken. Rivalry, romance, violence, etc. I think this could be an interesting scenario to develop characters and have different interesting plot arcs.
The first 'cast' so to speak would probably all come from the same family. Being a criminal is not necessary, in fact I think having some characters staying away from that could create some interesting dynamics, as women and children would be involved in this family. Perhaps later on characters from other gangs could be involved.
Port Rush, New Jersey.
Founded in the late 1700s, resting south-east of the state capital Trenton on the east coast, the city quickly became one of the United State's most important coastal locations. Not only was it a communal ground of trade and travel, but also a hub of industry, meaning despite it not holding the title of 'state capital', it quickly became the biggest and most populous city in the state. Throughout the centuries since it's conception, Port Rush has continued to grow, becoming a multi-cultural mixing pot, having a large population of European, Puerto Rican and African-American citizens. However, the city, now, in this modern era, does not have the most healthy of reputations. Despite the fact that petty crime is fairly well controlled, it is no secret that the city has major underground gang warfare issues, though the rumors do not even match the severity of the issue. In reality, everything in the city, from the industry to the police force has been infected by these dominating gangs. Port Rush is in the hands of gangs, and the everyday people don't even know it.
So yeah, this is all very work in progress. Drop a comment if you are interested. Constructive criticism is welcome.
