Is there a term for "weird" fantasy?

I really want to read more about a type of fantasy where the main characteristic is that it’s “weird” the creatures are all unique and strange, nothing taken from mythos and stuff like that.

The landscape is illogical and surreal, is there anything like that? Is this a real genre? Or there is no such thing?

We were instructed to come up with backstories for our characters which could lead to some quests and side quests. Here is what I worked up after rolling a 5'1" elf strong in Charisma and Dexterity.
My character Val is from a family of wood elves which for generations has run a boarding school of sorts for dragon wyrmlings while their parents are off hunting treasures, righting wrongs, or are just too preoccupied.

Wouldn't you know it, her father lost a wyrmling(!) which has led to all kinds of problems including her family being treated as outcasts and feared retribution to both her family and from mama dragon when she returns.

Impatient with the elven clan's elderly ruling council's endless debates on what action to take Val and her sister Lilitha leave to go find this wrymling before bad things come of it.

How difficult could it be to find a baby dragon in an area dominated by humanoid settlements?

Well working a lead on the docks of Helmskeep Val and Lilitha got separated and the only evidence of Lilitha left was enough elven blood to indicate Lilitha was probably dead.

Before she could secure passage out of town Val herself was kidnapped by a party of human males with matching red "A" tattoos (League of Arian Nationalists, a "Human Purity" cult). Some terrible experiences there left her with quite the distaste for human males in particular. She only escaped by disgustingly enough charming one of them.

Shortly there after she bumped into the rest of the adventurers.

So while not entirely original, I was watching my own newborn and Sons of Anarchy at the time, it has provided the DM with some entertainment.

What do you all have that has worked well and hasn't?

I am confused by the concept of coexistent planes. For example, about the Plane of Shadow in the Manual of Planes we read: If a wizard travels onto the Plane of Shadow from a forest, she first sees an equivalent shadow forest. If she starts underwater, she appears within a shadowy sea that behaves like a Material Plane ocean.
So the wizard arrived in the Plane of Shadows see something similar what he saw in the Material Plane, but still it is obviously another places; this brings the egg-chicken problem, what influences what? What would happen if somebody burns down the forest in one of the two planes?

I'd like to imagine some kind of symbiotic relation between the planes, but I am not sure. How do you imagine this stuff in your games?

So, I had an idea for faster combat in D&D. I think combat takes way too long in the game myself, so consider this; all monsters and players have only 1 hp, and all weapons deal 1 damage (no damage roll, just a flat 1 damage.) I would probably adjust the AC of certain monaters given this system. What do you think?

I was going to post this in my "pregenerated characters" thread but thought this deserved its own topic.

In short, my group of two years started a new game with pregenerated characters and I gave it a try, and it went very poorly.

One of the most hurtful things that was said before I left the group was that I shouldn't be allowed to play a female character because I "do so really badly."

This shocked me, and ever since it happened I have been wracking my brain trying to understand what was meant by it. I could just ask the person who said it, but I am A: embarrassed to have that conversation and B: know that if I reach out to open talks with the group I am going to get sucked back into the game rather than making a clean break.
So, in short:

How does one play a female character badly? What are some common pitfalls associated with cross-gender roleplaying?

Now, if anyone wants to know a little bit more about my personal situation:

I have been playing with this group for a little over two years and played the same character the whole time. I felt very comfortable in the RP, but apparently I was doing something that was cringe-worthy or offensive the whole time without me realizing it or anyone else pointing it out to me. Now keep in mind, this is the ONLY character that this person has ever seen me play.

I am the "specialist" type of gamer who likes to play similar characters in every game. In the past 20 years of RPing 9/10 of my characters have been female, and I am personally a lot more comfortable playing a female character than a male one, and I always thought I was fairly in tune with my female side. When I was in college I had creative writing professors tell me I was good at a female voice, software that analyzes the gender of an author usually pegs my writing as the work of a female, my parents are always mad at me for not acting "manly" enough, and in high school when I asked my friends for dating advice they always told me that my problem was that I approached relationships like a girl and needed to learn to see things from a man's point of view.

So, this has kind of shaken my confidence in my ability to RP, and I am now wondering just how bad I am at not only playing a woman but as playing any character at all.
