Burai Kasei

Burai laughed along with Kenshiro's easy quip, smiling in relief as the boy's chakra seemed to settle, at least somewhat. It appeared as though he had one less issue to worry about in this team. He had, of course, been worried that some small hostility may have surfaced upon close interaction, but so far his male teammate seemed entirely mellow.

Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said of the Hyuuga girl. Her insult may have stung, had this been his first year. As it was, his smile turned hard. "Blind, but not unseeing. Be sure not to forget it." Satisfying though the retort was, it didn't stop him from reeling internally at such a blunt confirmation of the Spiga's... dietary habits. Was it really such common knowledge?! Such was, he supposed, the cost of spending most of one's time in one's own company. He cast another assessing glance at Shiori as the girls parted, tuning out the conversation to a degree. It... certainly explained a few of the observations he'd made. A part of him had always dismissed that clan's reputation as malicious rumours.

He watched the other pair leave to find their teams, and took the opportunity to launch a blunt pencil at the Hyuuga's head. Distracted as he was, it didn't reach her. He turned back to face Shiori directly. His smile, pasted onto his face even now, seemed rather more forced than he would've liked.

"In this case, Shiori, Kenshiro, I should hope that we could make decisions as a team. Especially given that our Jounin Sensei will carry the authority." He paused. "And I'm afraid, Shiori-san, that I would make rather an unpleasant meal. I am both stringy and distinctly caustic." A laugh bubbled from his throat. "Rather like eating cement and gristle, I should think!" He kept laughing, despite his... mixed feelings. This, he realized, would be one of those days. Fortunately, it died off quickly, and he sighed.

"I think it would wonderful to acquaint ourselves over lunch." He turned, worriedly, towards Kenshiro. "If, of course, your parents will not mind? It's... all too clear to me that relations between our clans are... shall we say tense?"

Burai Kasei

As mild-mannered as he often was, Burai was nothing if not a prankster, and seing the Hyuuga girl's chakra writhe with hurt was entriely too satisfying for him to comfortably admit. 'Serves her right,' he thought, his face twisting into something between a smirk and a frown. The girl was entirely too big for her boots, and, frankly, he'd been meaning to knock her down a few pegs since she'd first looked down her nose at him. A twist of laughter made its way onto his face, and he cast his gaze to Shiori directly.

The girl was... far from what he had expected. Equal parts malign and puckish, he found himself drawn to her somehow. Perhaps it was curiosity? Or perhaps simply caution... Either way, he gave her a firm nod, returning her handshake warmly.

"In that case, Shiori-san, let us hope that day comes sooner rather than later." A moment later, he addressed the Hyuuga girl, although his head never moved. "I'm afraid the same does not extend to you, Hyuuga. Perhaps, one should think twice before casting judgements, hm?" Against his better instinvt, he smirked. Let no one say that Burai Kasei was a wimp!

He would deny, until his dying breath, that he had jumped when Kenshiro announced himself.

He would vehemently deny having forgotten to tag the boy.

He wheeled around, (most assuredly not) startled, and choked out a sputtering laugh.

"Ah! Kenshiro-san! I didn't see you there!" Sensing an opportunity to gather his dignity, he coughed, pointing to his headband, and mustered a chuckle. "For obvious reasons, of course! Myself and Shiori-san were just discussing you" He held out his hand, smiling. "It's a pleasure to work with you!

Nina is a lively, if somewhat shy individual whose focus from day to day is simply to make it through with a smile on her face. In conversation she is chipper and positive, although she finds herself marred by a nervous stammer and occasional bouts of forgetfulness. She tries to maintain a level of optimism no matter the situation, believing wholeheartedly that even the darkest clouds are lined with silver.

Given her apparent tendency to talk to herself coupled with her abnormal size and premature development, she has found it difficult to form a proper social circle, and this shows both in her slightly off-kilter sense of humour and reluctance in approaching strangers. That said, she believes firmly in holding the line, and would gladly jump in front of an attack if it would save others. In her more introspective moments, Nina would consider herself the strong, silent type, although in reality-

(That's crap! Nina's got a raging downer going on herself, it pisses me off! I'm Len Niwa, her better half, and I don't stand for that dishonest bull! Misa Niwa, Chuunin, had been expecting twins from her first pregnancy. Instead, she found herself giving birth to an abnormally large little girl, with no sign of her sibling. Naturally, this disturbed the woman, but she and her husband found themselves so overjoyed by parenthood that the discrepancy was swiftly forgotten; that is, until Nina began talking to herself. The behaviour worried her parents from day one, although at first they simply believed she had an imaginary friend. Soon, however, she became so enthralled by this presence that it couldn't be ignored. They asked her who she'd been talking to. "My Brother!" Was far from the answer they'd expected.

The family tried as best they could to cope with this seeming hallucination, taking her to multiple professionals, but it quickly became clear that this was no mere delusion. The brother, whom she had dubbed Len, was far too real a person to be a product of psychological distress. With no other options, the Niwas decided to simply accept Len's existence until such a time as Nina could better explain what he was.

And so things were for her formative years. Nina would live each day with the gradual realisation that she and Len weren't normal. She was growing faster than she should; by the time she was seven, she stood at an easy four feet tall, and had been slowly pushed away from her peers by her constant muttering and conversations with mid-air. In fact, it wouldn't be until her first chakra exercises at the Academy that the twins and their parents would realise the truth. While attempting to access their chakra, they discovered that they possessed two separate wells of power.

Suddenly, things made sense! Their parents finally sat Nina down and told her that she had been a twin in the womb. That Len must have parasitized her, and in a stroke of fortune, been accepted by her soul and body. They were, in effect, two separate individuals in a single suit of flesh. It was then that the pair decided: They would work together to prove each other's existences, and would take the ninja world by storm!

Burai Kasei

Burai frowned. He didn't know what he'd been expecting from his teammate, but such open malice... wasn't it, somehow. He had... heard of the Spiga, of course, but he really wasn't the kind to believe rumours. Now, however, he began to wonder just how many of them were true. Still, she hadn't been openly hostile yet, and if he was to work with her for the next several years of his career, it wouldn't do to make too awful a first impression. As such, he thought for a moment, never diverting his attention from Shiori, before saying his piece.

"The Hyuuga are bloated, over-traditional, and have an unfortunate propensity for crippling arrogance. In particular, their attitude towards my clan is... vexing, to say the least." He turned his attention to the Hyuuga girl at the table. "Your friend, meanwhile, I find abrasive, self-centred and overconfident in her station and ability. She rides the social wave with her beauty," his face contorted somewhat, "but what I see is a bland, conceited child who will never make it past chuunin. Her chakra is as plain as dust." He turned back to Shiori, a smile returning to his face. Then, almost as an afterthought, he added "As for Kenshiro-san, I find him a skilled, agreeable individual. He has never approached me with hostility, and his chakra is inoffensive. He will be a good teammate, I think."

He nodded firmly, and took another step towards the desk, thickening his chakra shield as he went.

"As for myself, Shiori-san, I will endeavour to be the best teammate - and, hopefully, friend - I can be, regardless of any stumbling blocks that may fall beneath my feet. They are only obstacles for me to overcome." He extended his hand, once again, to shake, still smiling firmly. "Anyway, in these situations, I believe it is customary to shake hands with one's comrade." He held his pose for a number of moments, before an idea came to him. With his free hand, he pulled up one side of his headband, briefly exposing a single blackened, shrunken eye to the girl's gaze, before dropping it again. "I do not appreciate being referred to as 'it', Shiori-san." And, against his better judgement, a silent laugh bubbled from his throat, forcing a rather more genuine smile onto his lips.

'Right', he thought to himself, 'let's see how she reacts to that!'

Burai Kasei

Smiling softly to himself at his prank, Burai placed a hand on top of his files to stop its spinning and opened it eagerly. Reserved as he often seemed, he was just as excited to meet his team as anyone else. He'd wanted to be a Ninja for most of his life - had dedicated uncountable hours to training and furthering his style, and for the first time in his (admittedly short) life, he felt ready. As he brushed his fingers over each page, searching for his assignment, he cast his mind over his classmates, wondering, idly, which of them he'd be spending the next few years of his life with. He was drawn first to the Karata boy. Their bloodlines were somewhat similar, after all, and his chakra was fascinating to watch; it would swirl around his eyes in strange, pulsating eddies, bleeding into every vessel of his network. There was something calming about it, somehow, despite its more agitated undercurrents.

He thought next of the handful of Hyuuga he shared a classroom with, and couldn't help but frown. Burai had nothing against the Hyuuga, per se, but most that he had met had treated him with severe disdain, the Hokage and some of his classmates notwithstanding, and his clan were never afraid to mouth off the users of the Byakugan. His uncle Jou would often tell him stories about the branch Hyuuga that he'd shared his first team with. They had hated each other with a passion, and Jou insisted that the girl had tried to kill him more than once; undoubtedly, she had many similar stories of him. That said the Hyuuga Burai knew personally were mostly decent. Perhaps it was down to the fact that he could feel safe in the knowledge that they were perfectly aware of when he was staring at them. One Hyuuga Kiyoshi, in particular, was someone he wouldn't mind working with. The boy had a tranquil air about him, his chakra flowing in controlled waves, and the swollen vessels around his eyes far less jagged than most.

There was also, of course, the unforgettable Jin. Burai liked the boy, in all honesty. There was an undeniable energy about him that was worryingly infectious. However, perhaps having him as a teammate would be a step too far...

These thoughts soon came to an abrupt, unpleasant halt. One of his teammates' information hadn't been properly stamped, (he wouldn't mention it to sensei; much as he enjoyed pulling her leg, he was too fond of the woman to draw attention to it), and he struggled to read it with any kind of haste. The other, however, was clear as day.

"Shiori Spiga..." he muttered, attention scanning across the room in search of her chakra. "Of all possible students, why must it be her?"

Burai would readily admit that he judged the girl unfairly. He always had, and was well aware of it. Frankly, they'd almost never spoken, and the few spars they'd had were fast-paced and enjoyable. However, there was... something about the girl - about her chakra - that unsettled him on a level he found difficult to explain. Her entire aura seemed to writhe, a strange undercurrent of malice just peeking out from under a thick blanket of normality. Perhaps he was being paranoid, but her chakra network was so distracting that he had learned early on in his time at the academy to tune it out, lest he spend all day staring in her general direction. (There were others who had had the same effect on him, of course, but hers was a particularly unique case). Now, by contrast, he was actively seeking her out, his awareness flitting about the room even as his head remained motionless. Finally, he pinpointed her, sitting alongside an apparently, (he really hadn't the ability to make his own observation on the matter), beautiful Hyuuga with whom he'd sparred occasionally, and one of the more irritating girls in his year, (the type Jou would call a 'prissy little Herbert'). With a determined gulp, he stood, and strode towards the three with as much confidence as he could project, flaring a weak chakra shield as he went, a thin, pale purple aura stretching over him like a second skin. (It always payed to be cautious, after all).

Finally, he arrived, standing at a polite distance, and cleared his throat, making sure to fix his gaze firmly on her face.

"You are Shiori Spiga, yes?" he began, a nervous, but fixed smile on his face. He extended his hand. "I am called Kasei Burai, son of the Kasei third branch, and I am to be your teammate." He inclined his head in a firm nod. "I eagerly anticipate our working together!"

Takayuki Mekakushi

Takayuki Mekakushi, known across the continent as the Mirage, the fastest Jounin alive, was not having a good day; not in the slightest. He'd been out running a short courier mission to the other side of Fire Country, when, half way back to the village, he'd been attacked by a gang of Sand missing nin. He was lucky to have noticed them; a moment later and he'd have ploughed into the trap they'd set. Needless to say, crashing into a large earthen slab at speeds in excess of 150mph was not something he would willingly attempt any time soon. So now, he was in heated combat with a gang of skilled Shinobi, and running distinctly behind schedule.

He was broken from his thoughts by the sudden appearance of a brace of Kunai, careering towards him from the right. 'Damn you, Mekakushi, you distractible twit!' Quickly realizing he wouldn't be able to dodge, he planted his feet, flashing his hands into a momentary Snake seal and activated the Supreme Phase. Surge Chakra coursed from his tenketsu like waterfalls as his body began to vibrate, and there was a loud crack as two afterimages curled around each side of the volley, before snapping back together. Before the Chuunin responsible could realize what'd happened, Takayuki snagged one of the Kunai around his finger and hurled it back, nailing her right over the scratch in her headband and passing clean through.

"Hana!" came the cry of the group's Jounin, whose hands snapped into the seals for a common Earth Jutsu, snarling at the death of his comrade. It occurred to Takayuki that he could end it then and there. He was, however, annoyed. Instead he simply smiled, dodging air bullets and thrown weapons idly. 'Meh,' he thought, 'I think I can spare the chakra.' His hands blurred through a long sequence of hand seals, even as the other Jounin slammed his hand to the earth, grinning viciously. A crack of thunder sounded across the clearing, accompanied by a searing flash of blue light, as lightning cloaked the Mirage's form. In one motion, he slipped his goggles down over his eyes and blurred through a quintet of seals, (Tiger, Hare, Reverse Hare, Snake, Tiger, Release!). As a vicious spike of Earth came barreling out of the ground towards him, he vanished, a whirlwind of shredded leaves appearing in his wake. The enemy followed him around the battlefield with surprising tenacity, spires of rock erupting where he'd appeared a moment earlier, but the Surging Flicker was notorious for its overwhelming speed. The enemy stood no chance. Within seconds, he'd sent no fewer than twelve of his own spires careering towards himself, and a platform of rock carried him into the air; directly into the path of a Surging Flare, which Taka had swung around behind the man. It impacted the back of the Jounin's head, bursting into a blinding, green conflagration.

The smell of burning flesh snapped the remaining three Chuunin out of their stupors, and they charged, as one, towards Taka. He smiled, and punched the earth, fist wreathed in neon flame.

"Flash Fryer!" A wave of heat pulsed through the ground from the point of impact, blowing the assailants back and igniting their clothes. Unwilling to give them even a moment's reprieve, Taka blurred his hands through another group of seals, and opened his arms wide. "Plasma Wave."

A few minutes later, his bingo book was in his hand, the smouldering head of his main attacker in the other, at arm's length. "Ichigo Gurei, huh? Stupid sod." He sighed, tossing the head aside; the man's bounty was low enough that carrying the body home was more trouble than it was worth. "I need to get home." He reactivated the Godspeed Shroud, and set off towards Konoha at a sprint, trailing lightning in his wake.

"And that concludes my report, Hokage Sama." Takayuki grinned at the older man, patently ignoring both the distinct scent of ozone he'd left in the office, and the secretary he'd bowled over, who was currently glaring daggers at his back as she gathered the last of her papers. He gave the Hokage his best innocent face. "I do hope I'm not too late, I've been looking forward to meeting my team for days!"

"Niko is always happy happy! Let's do something fun!"
Niko has been described as nothing but id. Niko is a ball of chaotic energy, lacking almost any sort of empathy or maturity, while being obsessed with fighting and sealing, which Niko finds "Super Fun~!". She will kill someone mercilessly while smiling and asking them how much fun they're having. In a way, she doesn't understand what she's doing any more.

Niko's motivations were once to take revenge on the Ninja villages for the fall of Uzushio, and while this drive is long gone, it still expresses itself as a desire to fight. Although Niko can find enjoyment in almost everything, fighting powerful Ninja from hidden villages is her favourite pastime. In keeping with this, Niko tends not to be one to take sides, instead running with whomever she thinks will put her in the best position to have fun. Moreover, due to a complex seal of her own creation, Niko cannot feel any form of negative emotion - including boredom. For Niko, something is either fun, or it isn't, and she's fine with that. Anger, guilt, sadness and pain are foreign concepts to her. An injury is a pleasant tingling. The death of a friend is the enemy being a 'really fun opponent'. An opponent fighting unfairly means that she simply needs to up her own game. That said, if it's proven to her that she's misunderstood the 'rules' of a 'game' (read: motivations of a fight or surrounding situations), she will gladly change tack and fight alongside someone else.

This is exemplified by Konoha. To Niko's twisted perception, Konoha was playing a game, and betrayed Uzu by failing to assist them. As such, it's 'most fun' to fight Leaf nin. If it were properly explained to her in terms she understood, Niko could easily be swayed to help the Leaf, since the other villages had 'cheated'.

Niko views everyone as a friend; as someone she can play with. That said, people she trusts, or believes will always be on her side are her 'bestest friends!', and attempts to turn her against them aren't liable to go well.

Niko Uzumaki was once nothing more than a promising young student of the Whirlpool's sealing arts. Born to a small branch of the Uzumaki clan, Niko found himself gifted with a brilliant mind and an innate talent for seals. As such, as time went on, he found himself growing into an extremely competent Ninja, with a deep respect for his teachers and peers and a consuming love of his village. Indeed, by the time he had reached Chuunin rank, he had dedicated himself almost entirely to his art.

In this way, he found himself becoming a powerful and well-respected shinobi, enjoying an important position in the village hierarchy, and a close relationship with the Village's allies in the leaf. Indeed, many of his more mundane missions involved assisting the Leaf with matters of defense and sealwork. By the time he was twenty, he had an adoring fiancé, a glowing reputation, and was seriously under consideration as the next Uzukage. It was a shame, then, that the rest of the world decided it was a wonderful moment to go to war.

In the space of a day, Niko's life had collapsed around him. His betrothed had vanished in the flames, his comrades were being massacred around him, his life's work was at risk of burning before his eyes, and even as he scythed through enemy Ninja until his hands were soaked in blood, he found himself powerless to stop the slaughter. As the village burned, he scrambled to gather as many of its Sealing relics and scrolls as he could, before fleeing into the night.

He drifted for a time, mind empty, in the face of all that he had lost. He sought someone to blame, and, unable to blame himself, he turned to the Villages. Stone and Mist, who had attacked the Whirlpool without mercy. Sand, Rain and others, which had stood by and watched. But more importantly, their so-called allies in Konoha; the traitors who had failed to save his Fiancé, and doomed his beloved village to destruction.

Thus, he dedicated himself to the utter destruction of the Shinobi world, tearing across the continent in a blind rage. He became known, for a time, as a ghost of Uzu, renowned for his unyielding assault on foreign Ninja, and in particular his vicious hatred of Leaf nin. He was violent, brutal, and, perhaps most importantly, reckless. His fighting style began to take its toll on his body, and he resorted to sealing to keep himself alive; first with simple life-support arrays, and later, as his organs began to fail, a seal which stole parts or the whole of an injured opponent's body when the correct base seals had been applied.

It had to come to a head, eventually. How ironic that this came abut when, in a rage, he beheaded and stole the body of his old fiancee, who had joined the Leaf after escaping the Whirlpool. After years of fighting, the guilt, and pain, and anger had become too much for Niko to bear. In a fit of insanity, he crafted a roughshod seal designed to eliminate those emotions that were holding him back. It was intended to allow him to continue his crusade without inhibition. Unfortunately, his talent proved to be his downfall.

The seal was too effective. Instead of inhibiting guilt and anger's effects on his determination, applying it to his forehead effectively lobotomized him, removing any and all negative emotions, perceptions and sensations. Pain, anger, disappointment, sadness, guilt, even boredom were wiped from his consciousness; locked behind a tattoo of blood and ink. In that instant, Niko Uzumaki, avenger of the Whirlpool, died, and was replaced by an agent of chaos and self-gratification.

From then on, driven solely by desire, and almost impossible to reason with, they began a decades-long journey across the Elemental Nations, garnering a reputation as a dangerous and unpredictable renegade; an individual who would pop up at a food stall and make idle conversation with a Ninja before dueling them to the death, laughing all the while. Their form varied wildly, from male to female, short to tall, but Niko remained identifiable by her crop of bright red hair, the distinctive lattice of seal tattoos that adorned her skin, and the mishmash of different skin tones and body parts that made up her form.

One thing is certain: as long as Crazy Niko is in the area, no one is safe.

Owing to her immense talent in seals, many of Niko's techniques are classified as fuuinjutsu, either by means of sealing tags or tattoos, bending her own chakra through the sealing matrices to achieve any number of effects. Further, Niko utilizes a number of basic seals with simple elemental effects, which, at a higher chakra cost, can be used to create new effects on the fly. A large portion of Niko's seal tattoos are simply extensions of the emotion seal, which, as a by-product, has stored a compromised copy of the original Niko's mind. This allows the exertion of a dominant mind and personality, although it is continuously being diluted.

Niko's Special Swirly Brush!: A large, collapsible sealing brush equipped with small, hollow needles on its handle, which retract and extend with a pulse of chakra. These needles extract Niko's blood for mixing with her sealing ink, which is stored in a reinforced compartment on the brush. Its long bristles, when inked, can compress and harden into a short blade, transforming the brush into a kind of short polearm. In this way, Niko can make detailed sealing inscriptions on the body of an opponent on the fly. Overall, a highly specialised and uniquely versatile tool.

✖ ‖ F i g h t i n g S t y l e
Niko is a chaotic element on the battlefield, making what she perceives as fun banter with opponents while charging wildly and throwing seals and Jutsu out with alarming speed. She prefers to work alone.
