Al gave a grin as the lord decided not to send him to the gallows, and the rest of the group made nervous small talk. It would seem that his bluff had worked, and he'd secured them a multitude of supplies. Truly, there he had become skilled at negotiating. Also smashing and slashing. He wasn't a bad drinker either, in his opinion.

"Hm?" he hummed as the doors opened behind them. Briefly he wondered if negotiations had failed after all, only to see it was a very young girl accompanied by a very old man.
"Oh... Oh man that's her grandpa!" he said aloud, smiling. This new arrival was the key, the final piece to the puzzle. Al knew what the treasure was now: the elixir of youth. Why else would such an old man have his grandchild escort him to this wild land?

With a treasure like what was up ahead, the swordsman was one step closer to achieving his dream.
"I'll have you know that these swords break a lot, thank you very much." Al interjected, thrusting his hand aside.
"A lot." he repeated, his face growing serious.

"Also, they're bigger than throwing knives. Also, they're cool. Why would you have one cool thing when you could have three? Answer me that, mister man. And for the record, we don't need you-" this sentence was cut off by a loud grumbling. "We need your charity. I'll check out the weird stuff for you for free food. Deal?"
"Lord Cross?!" Al gasped, following after the group.
"You don't mean the Lord Cross? The guy who... who..." he looked downwards at his feet, crossing over from snow covered dirt to snow covered cobblestone.
"I don't know who Lord Cross is. I don't think I've ever been here before, actually." he scratched the back of his head. It struck him as odd for the lord of a town to demand an audience with what appeared to be mostly vagrants, woodsmen, and, if the blonde man was any indicator, very fashionable jesters. Well, he supposed the last one would make sense.

That still left only vague ideas what might befall the wanderers.
"...This isn't gonna get weird, is it?"

Normal is a stretch. Yes, this shows it is possible, and I might let you use a utility knife instead of a shield seeing that video, but I see no reason from the evidence presented too allow it to do more damage.
Also, high fantasy just means a lot of magic. A lot of different varieties of DnD worlds exist, some low-fantasy with gritty realism and rare spell casting with long rests needed alongside painstakingly crafted and gathered materials to produce simple effects, others with high fantasy magic sword shops. Regardless of this, unless you want to use a warp physics spell, the rules for dual wielding will be removed.

Not only is it possible, that very video displays some of the advantages to be had from using a parrying dagger of some kind. In Japan, you also have Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the country's most famous martial artist, and he's known for developing a two sword style.

Also, all spells warp physics by their very definition.

Apologies again for the misconception. Please see the last post, specifically number 4.
Thank you for the evidence though!

Actually dual wielding also existed. It wasn't common, but it happened. In Europe, it was normal to use a sword accompanied by a parrying dagger, for example.
Also literally everything I said about wizards still stands. Dual wielding happened in real life; you can't complain about that being unrealistic and keep wizards.
And furthermore, D&D is as vanilla high fantasy as it gets. It's perfectly normal for fighters to use outlandish weapons and exotic fighting techniques.

Here are a pair of HEMA experts talking about historical dual wielding in Europe.

"Two-handed weapons are unrealistic"

Hang on there. This is wrong on so many levels, historically, mechanically, etc. and I am going to go over as much as I can without stopping.

Let's start with something simple to grasp: the fact that two-handed weapons historically existed and were used. From claymores and greatswords in the west, to halberds, pikes, the Japanese katana and various long spears, literally every form of bow, these were all used. The longsword is HEMA's big time weapon to train with and it's primarily used with two hands. Long spears require two hands. Two-handed weapons were at least as common as one-handed arms historically, if not more, especially once heavier armor comes into play.

And in terms of a high fantasy game, banning two-handed weapons for being unrealistic (which they're not) is such a ridiculous notion I can't even start. You have wizards throwing fireballs and druids shapeshifting into animals. You're going to look at someone with a straight face and tell them that's fine, but tell someone else that their fighter can't use a claymore?
And furthermore, banning two-handed weapons takes out a good chunk of a martial class's repertoire. He can't use halberds now; he can't use roughly half the swords that exist, nor can he use most other polearms, certain exotic weapons, etc.
And what about bows? Bows are two-handed. Are you going to look at the ranger and say that he can't use fucking bows now?

In conclusion, here's some videos of martial artists sparring using two-handed weapons.

Al's coat fluttered in the winter breeze as he trudged forward, adjusting the sling on his back. The crunch of snow under boots was accompanied by the metallic clink of several blades knocking together in time with his footsteps.

"Note to self: Buy gloves." he said aloud, raising his hands to breathe hot air onto them. Rubbing them together, he peered ahead. A gray fortress seemed to rise up from the cold. Though it didn't seem particularly cozy, the last town informed Al this would be his last stop into civilization before entering the wilds. He briefly went over the essentials: he'd need extra rations, a spare fire starter, and warmer clothing if he could afford it. He'd also need a pot to heat food. Fortunately, snow could be melted for fresh water; this would save on carrying weight.

Al stopped thinking about his shopping list as he came closer to the front gates. A varied bunch had assembled outside, stopped by a guard. It struck the swordsman as odd to make this of all places a checkpoint. Then again, Al himself had an armory slung across his back, so maybe it wasn't entirely unjustified.
"Is this the welcoming committee?" he called from behind a cheek-splitting grin.
"You know, when it's this cold, people are usually greeted with hot cider.... dammit, now I want cider."
Excellent. I'll post soon.
Name: Al Valkanos
Age: 21
Gender: Male

Appearance: Al's taller than average, with decent muscle tone, but his long body makes him look leaner. His hair is a messy, unkempt mop of muddy brown hair, and his facial features are surprisingly soft. Albeit, he's usually got a bruise or bandage marring them.
His dress style is pretty comfy; he mostly wears loose fitting traveler pants and tightly belted boots, with a wool sweater and dingy hooded longcoat up top. His right hand and lower arm is wrapped in bandages for better wrist support and also so he doesn't lose his grip. On his back he typically keeps one to four large greatswords, of varied make, kept in a sling. He made a necklace out of a a beast's fang, and wears it as a lucky charm.

Weapons/Belongings: Al's weapon of choice is the greatsword, and he's currently carrying four of them. If one breaks or gets tossed, he has a handy backup. These particular ones are made of steel, but he's not picky when it comes to replacements.
Additionally, he has a wallet containing a small amount of money and a hunting knife on his belt, and a rucksack containing rations, a flint, a bottle of extraordinarily strong liquor, a torch, and a length of rope tied to a rock.

Magic PHYSICAL SKILLS: Al is strong - much stronger than his frame would even suggest; he spent his youth wrestling animals for fun, when he wasn't toiling away with hard labor. He's durable to boot, and has a frighteningly high pain tolerance. One can only wonder how many concussions he's received.
Naturally, his self-taught fighting style takes advantage of this, and focuses on Al throwing his momentum around to deliver maximum impact haymakers. Drop kicks are common, as are wild punches, suplexes, and throwing whatever's handy, up to and including the enemy. Additionally, Al carries around several greatswords, since he finds their length and mass are good for slinging around. Also he thinks they're cool.

Personality: Al is by all means a kind, well-meaning person, with an understanding of the importance of friendship. He just happens to have a wild streak, and that streak just happens to be rather good at hitting stuff really hard.
He's not so much caught up in a balance between right and wrong as he is between right and fun. This poor impulse control, combined with a poor danger sense, inevitably means he's often the first to dive into a dangerous area or do something stupid for fun. It's great in a dangerous line of work, though.

Short History: It's not precise to say Al's forgotten his past due to amnesia. It is, however, accurate to say he's forgotten where it is. However, when growing up, he was always considered a strong boy, even in a rural community where the pastime was wrestling wild animals. Al, however, couldn't be content living a life of mostly farming and whiling away the hours on the porch. He was the sort of child who liked to wander. One day, the year he became a man, he wandered a bit too far, and ever since then has gotten increasingly lost. Determined not to let that get him down, the then fifteen year old began a new life, the life of an adventurer, sellsword, and treasure hunter.
As of late, Al's heard rumor of some strange happenings going on in the north. In his line of work, that's a business opportunity. Not one to scorn the idea of magic, he'd rather see it as a potential job offer. Even if nobody payed him to go there, they might be interested in any loot he brought back. And so, the swordsman trekked into the harsh tundra, ready to meet with any challenge the unknown might throw his way.
Oh man I'm late. I noticed there's a lot of mages and agile guys, so I'm dropping someone in with a focus on melee combat.
