See above for the OOC post. Let me know if any of the links or images aren’t loading properly and I’ll look into it.

Thanks!

Of be down if you’ll have me!

There’s no cap on the number of people or parties that we’re accepting. Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to Lost Realms of Arann: Northmarch.

So this is based on a role playing forum, the Lost Realms of Arann, that I was engaged with over ten years ago. It was a great experience, primarily because it was a free-flowing open world that we added to and explored as we went. I’d love to recapture that magic here.

I’ve created this rough-looking map to give a sense of where we begin this adventure. This is the northernmost region of the continent of Adea, a frontier beyond the control of the civilized world with only pockets of civilization to be found here and there. We start our adventure in the only city in the region, the ancient city of Teres. I’ll start the game with an introduction that explains what Teres is, a bit about its history and where it fits into the world, an example of how to incorporate dice rolls into your posts, and so on.

From there, the rest is really up to you. The crux of a West Marches campaign is that there aren’t any railroads or anything of that sort. I have ideas about what you can find in Weyeshire or in Quaye, for example, and you guys are welcome to explore and stumble upon those, and keep in mind that I have ideas for plenty of locations and things that aren’t indicated on the map. Where you actually go is up to you.

West Marches campaigns can also accommodate a large number of people, with different groups going on different places at their leisure. At the present, there are five people or so interested, which is sufficient to create a party, but there is no cap, really.

So, what kind of characters are you playing?

This is D&D 5E, as I mentioned in the interest check, and we’re going to be limiting the classes, races, options, etc. to those available in the Player’s Handbook. So, core rules only. This is really just for the sake of convenience. Let’s not overcomplicate the game in its earliest stages.

I’m very flexible with character sheets. Submit the sheet through whichever medium is most convenient for you, so long as it contains all of the information you would find on a Fifth Edition Character Sheet. Whether that’s Mythweavers, a custom Word document, whatever, it’s all fine so long as I’m able to access it independently.

I look forward to seeing your character submissions, which you can place in the character tab.

Finally, I’ve created a Discord Channel for my creative content on here at RPG. Feel free to join up—I’ve created a channel there we can use to discuss the game in real time.

Perfect, this looks like a great group! I’m putting together the OOC now, should be up tonight.
Great, I'll get to work on the real thing.
The RP has begun, and due to its nature as a free flowing, West Marches-style sandbox game, we're always looking for new people to join the adventure. Come by and join!

Hi, I’m interested in running a West Marches campaign I’ve developed based on this map I've made up. It is a map of a lightly settled northern hinterland, ripe for adventure.

Assuming this gets off the ground, you will be playing newly minted adventurers fresh off the boat in the Old City of Teres. Your past is behind you—whether you came from the noble kingdoms of Adea, the desert trading hubs of Shayar, the far-eastern lands of Yvenlond, the dwarven Underkingdom, the elven realms, or elsewhere—and your future is entirely yours.

This is intended to be an open world environment, where you can compose any party you want with your fellow players and go out in search of adventure. Maybe you’ll investigate goblin raids on the nearby farming hamlets, or travel further abroad to check out the merpeople of Lac Myr. Maybe you’ll venture as far as Icefloe Cross, and see if you can map those northernmost uncharted territories of the world, or catalogue its exotic creatures and people.

All in all, I expect that some sort of persistent adventure will find its way into the story, but the big thing I want to make happen here is to put finding those adventures in the players’ hands.

As the title suggests we’ll be playing Dungeons & Dragons 5E. This is my first time playing on these boards, and I think I’d like to limit us to the core rulebook for the sake of convenience. I’m open to expanding that up down the line if it comes to it, but let’s not put the cart before the horse, the horse being active interest in doing this.

Let me know if you’d be interested in signing on to this adventure.
Updated with setting and introductory, in-character text.

The Mendicant Light dropped out of hyperspace some ten kilometers from the target. March worked the controls, and the Gozanti-class cruiser’s engines fired up. Directional thrusters oriented the ship in the void and brought the target vessel into view through the fore viewport. March turned on the comms, and the distress signal echoed through the bridge.

“This is Gareda-class transport All Possible Worlds, requesting immediate assistance from any available ships. 22111. This is Gareda-class transport All Possible Worlds, requesting immediate assistance from any available ships. 22112. This is Gareda-class transport All Possible Worlds, requesting immediate assistance from any available ships. 22113. This is Gareda-class transport All Possible Worlds . . ."

“March, how long has that signal been transmitting?” Decker asked as he stepped through the door to join his pilot on the bridge.

“Ah, so it seems like it’s looping, Captain. That number on the end, right? I think that’s the number of times the signal’s been transmitted. It goes up by one every time it comes through.”

“. . . requesting immediate assistance from any available ships. 22116. This is Gareda-class transport . . .”

“Twenty-two thousand?”

“Yeah, so the message is about thirteen seconds in length, right? The message lasts about seven, and then there’s a six second pause before the signal transmits again. So we’re looking at,” March said, pausing mid-sentence to do some mental arithmetic, “yeah, about three days. Maybe three and a half.”

“That’s a long time to be drifting out here.”

“Yeah, not a lot of traffic in these parts. Could be we’re the only ones on this route.”

“Can’t imagine why,” Decker said, looking out into the void. They were in the middle of nowhere. Deadspace. No star, rock, moon, station, anything. Just the void, and the Gareda-class transport some eight kilometers out. The emptiness was unsettling. “The hell is a Gareda, anyway?”

“Local design, maybe? Never heard of it,” March answered. “It’s got universal docking, though. Pretty much all we need to know.”

“Let’s hail them, then.” Decker pressed a button on the command console. “All Possible Worlds, this is Mendicant Light. We are responding to your distress call, please advise on your situation.” He removed his finger from the button and waited. March looked at him. After a minute had passed, and the Gareda-class grew larger in the viewport, he pressed the button again. “All Possible Worlds, this is Mendicant Light, responding to your distress call, come in.”

“No one home, Captain?” March asked.

“Could be.” Decker pursed his lips as he thought. He took a closer look at the readout on the ship. “See if you can scan for life forms. They have life support online.” He pressed the button again. “All Possible Worlds, we are coming aboard to investigate.” Decker pressed another button, this one to address the crew of the Mendicant Light over the intercom. “This is your captain speaking, prepare to board.”

I’m interested in testing out a tabletop game in the play-by-post format here, using Final Fantasy Games’s Star Wars: Edge of the Empire system. My idea is to run a short one-shot that would serve as a prequel for a follow-up campaign if this goes smoothly enough to warrant a sequel. Like a proof of concept.

The game would use only the core rule book for Edge of the Empire. The players will play a boarding party from the Mendicant Light, investigating a mysterious distress call on a derelict vessel in the depths of space.

Let me know if you're interested. I've also a Discord server for this, feel free to join the #allpossibleworlds channel there to discuss further.
