The deeper into the forest they went the higher Barth’s vigilance rose. After the conversation they had had with the Elder Goblin he was well aware that the direction they were heading would lead them to the home of giant spiders. Stumbling into one of their webs would spell death for at least one of them. So it was these little threads that he was on the search for. It didn’t take long for the first ones to begin appearing along his peripheral, though he would have easily missed them if it were not for the sun making them shimmer.
After walking a little further along he noticed the webs becoming thicker, easier to see even without the aid of the sun. It wasn’t too much longer after this that he caught sight of the spider. He had known that it was going to be massive, but the fact that it was equal in size to him and Nyma gave him momentary pause. This was actually fortunate, if he had walked a few more steps he would have been captured within the beast’s web.
Taking a deep breath he stared directly into the spider’s eyes, feeling adrenaline coursing through him. He knew that he couldn’t risk any sudden movements and he believed that it would be futile to try and close the distance enough to engage it in melee. Which logically meant he had once course of action, even if it was a horrible idea. Slowly he adjusted his grip on his spear to hold it in one hand. Bringing it back he took aim at the spider, trying to line up the tip of the spear to an imaginary dot just above the spiders head so that the drop would hopefully lead to a solid hit. Barth understood that there was a good chance this wouldn’t work, but even if it didn’t it would force the spider’s attention onto him and Nyma would have an opening to kill it. Preferably before it killed him.
He took one more steadying breath before launching his spear, hoping that his aim would prove to be true.
