After much delay, I have finished my character sheet. Let me know if I went overboard with the backstory, I tend to build edgy/backstory heavy characters, but I won't try to steal the spotlight in any way.
Background: Kalyum was born the sole heir to the Regnazzar family of mages. In years past, the Regnazzar family had been at the forefront of magical research, but as years passed their heirs began to show low magical proficiency, and before long the Regnazzar family stood at the brink of collapse. In an attempt to redeem their family, Arevan Regnazzar, patriarch of the family, began to dive into new magical research involving parallel planes, namely the Astral Plane. He and his wife, Nalissa, dove headlong into this research together. After years of failures and deadends, Regnazzar finally began to see results. The method worked infrequently, but the power was there, and Regnazzar began to study the power day and night, even working in his own mansion.
Kalyum was only 8 years old when it happened. Though he remembers little of the incident, he could recall a flash of bright light and a strange sort of melting sensation coming from his arms and legs. Beside him lay his mother, unmoving, gazing at him with a cold stare. Above him was his father, tears streaming from his eyes as he gathered various reagents, muttering strange unknown words under his breath. Kalyum tried to raise his arm, but instead what he saw was a dark shadowy mass falling apart on himself.
Kalyum's body had become what his father called an Astral Mass. A body of pure magical energy. Uncontrolled, it would eventually pull itself apart and return to the Astral Plane, almost certainly killing him in the process. Arevan had managed to create a talisman that would help control the process, but his body was no longer his own. Even with the aid of the talisman, his body was not that of a human's. His legs could not even be called legs, rather, they were gelatinous pools of pure darkness. Not knowing what else to do, Arevan did his best to teach his son to control the power. First he learned to form a human hand, and then imitate human skin. It would be 3 years before Kalyum would be allowed to return outside again, but he wasn't done yet.
Kalyum wanted more than to appear human, he wanted to cure himself. Initially, Kalyum desperately tried to learn traditional magic from his father, but his body rejected the arcane arts. Instead, his father taught him what little he had developed in the realm of the Astral Plane, and together they forged a pair of swords not unlike Kalyum himself. Infused with energy originating from the Astral Plane, the blades were as formless as Kalyum was, and like him, he could change their shape at will. Christening the blades Nocturne and Requiem, Kalyum left home to travel the world, searching for a way to cure himself of his affliction. After many years, he came across the Red Dragon Bone Guild...

Question: Do you have any guidelines as to how "magic" functions in the setting? Asking about the setting, not game mechanics, I already understand that much.
Hey guys, I'm interested in joining the game. I know I'm new to the forum, but I'm very used to Tabletop Roleplay and am known for my love of theatrics, over the top characters, and use of flair among my friends. If you'll have me, I'd love to participate in this one. I can sit out until the next mission starts, but I'll make sure to make myself known on the OOC so you know I'm still here.
As for my character, I'm thinking of using a Flanker with the power set of Darkplane Evoker. The idea is that my character would be able to materialize objects such as shields, walls, and chains to use in combat, as well as summon a set of armor to enhance his own abilities. I like to consider the possibility of him also being able to utilize illusions, but if that's going too far I can easily cut it out. What do you think?
EDIT: And I just realized that you guys are talking about the GM being away. Hooray for not paying enough attention.
