The food Lily took for herself disappeared as soon as she sat on her chosen table. Her tummy full, she found exhaustion catching up with her. With so little sleep, it wasn't really surprising. She stacked her empty plates on her food tray and pushed it forward on the table. With the kitchenware out of the way, she crossed her arms on the table and laid her chin on it, watching the other students eat together and converse with each other. The corner table that she had chosen was inconspicuous enough to let her watch what was happening in the other tables. She saw familiar faces intermixed with unfamiliar ones. A flash of aquamarine hair, a scarred boy, brown hair... Her sleep deprived mind recognized them as her team mates...or previous team mates. She, however, had no idea if they were gonna be put in the same team again. From where she sat, they looked chummy together sitting with the pretty girl named Emma and someone she didn't recognize, a boy with wavy dark hair. She didn't find a particular want or need to join them but she wondered in passing if any of them would welcome her if she got up and joined their table.
It didn't take long for her lids to slowly flutter close, her entire body relaxing into sleep. Never mind the chattering voices in the cafeteria, never mind the clattering of utensils on plates. She was tired and no amount of noise would prevent her from falling asleep.
It would have been nice to have a dreamless sleep for once but Lily's were always full of nightmares about nondescript, featureless and nameless people. Despite the weariness of her body, her mind threatened to pull her out of her impomptu nap, desperate to escape the curses, harsh words, hateful utterings and malicious glares that always came from the faceless people that haunted her.
But disturbing dreams weren't what woke her up. It was the barrel of a rifle poking her on the back followed by a male voice barking out an order.
"Wake up!"Lily sleepily opened her eyes and looked dully at the guard.
"Why?" she challenged, a little irritated that she was roused from her sleep.
The guard responded by pressing the barrel of the rifle a little more firmly against her back.
Lily sighed.
"Fine," she muttered and once again let herself be herded to who knows where.
Where turned out to be a security outpost near Ground Zero. The small blonde teenager reached out for a cookie and began nibbling on it as the rules of the game was explained. The idea of being a "golden snitch" perked Lily up and she soon found her depressive mood change into her manic one. Even the boring directive of staying hidden at all costs during the game didn't dampen her mood. She glanced towards the other "golden snitch' and grinned. It was Christmas, the boy she had drank blood from. Lily was glad that he looked well enough. From where she was standing, she waved her hand and half bitten cookie cheerily at him.
Lily bounced on the balls of her feet a little impatiently. But she didn't need to wait long. Soon, they were escorted into a large clearing. Lily shoved the rest of the cookie into her mouth, chewing like a hamster with its cheeks full as she looked around a little excitedly. She wrinkled her nose at the sight of the dead bodies. What sort of place was this? Why were the people at school bringing them to a place with dead bodies?
Dead bodies... She stared wide eyed at one of the unmoving bodies, its form melting into one from her fragmented memory. Dark hair. Blood pooling around. She waited for the dead person's head to lift up and curse at her.
But it didn't move. The still body didn't even have dark hair.
They moved on.
A little more along the way and she was separated from Christmas. She didn't even get a chance to say goodbye as they were led to different directions. She was deposited in a large, nonfunctioning, empty freezer in a run down restaurant and was reminded to stay hidden before she was left alone.
"Stay hidden at all costs or risk solitary confinement in a containment chamber," she repeated to herself. Being a "golden snitch" wasn't exciting after all.
