You're younger than I am, Lauder.

You don't know that...

*sends out teenage vibes*
<Snipped quote by Lauder>

I think you may have missed the post I just tagged you in.

Universal translators are allowed, just not fast ones that can translate automatically. The machine should take days or weeks to learn the new language, and can only translate it after it has been learned.

Damn you kids and your fast typing!
@Hael

I can agree with you on OP and such, but unrealistic is something I do happen to disagree with. While it may not be a perfect universal translator, with one language blueberries is a noun and the other may be a verb, I believe it could be developed in the end. Regardless, you are the GM and I must obey, though there will be some sort of translations system going through my empire to help communications between slaves and their X'Cor masters. Plus body language is a valid thing, little differences here and there, yet all mean just about the same things.

Back to the olden forms of communication to a foreign species I suppose, shoot the shit out of it until it dies

Are universal translators a thing, then?

If they are, and if the Namilee were invaded by the X'Cor, wouldn't that have exposed them to the concept? And then they might actually possess universal translators themselves.

Hael has not said anything, or noticed, it in my form so I assumed that it was fine.

It could have, but I believe the Namilee had more pressing issues to worry, such as the X'Cor military fleet going after them hardcore. However, your face did communicate, even uplifted, civilizations so it could very well be a thing for your people.

True, the respect part might have to suffice first. The Mabronnans would be understanding of a cultural difference regarding the symbolic gift. Communication barriers would be tricky though. Unless Haelamera is giving us all a common language, then we have to find a way to make the Mabronnans' first impression of the Namilee is not just "They smell delicious."

<Snipped quote by Mardox>

Noted, but the Namilee won't know about that at first. They won't understand they're expected to present a gift, and they'll have to breach the communication barriers between themselves and your species.

I so happen to have universal translators

It makes sense for my Empire since I have to communicate with the slaves on a day-to-day basis and some of them may not have the ability to speak like a X'Cor
Here I am, doing science on how gravity affects objects and the required mass of such to help me find a way to make artificial gravity possible, then I end up on an article about thermonuclear detonations on Mars.

<Snipped quote by Lauder>

In a way? They're both.

The WISE thing to do is to avoid them, and that IS Namilee standard procedure. However, the Namilee feel as if they have some duty to help the X'cor realize what it is they're doing, how ultimately self-destructive it is, etc. If they could, they'd enter negotiations with the X'cor and try to share ideas.

But I think we all know how that'd turn out.

Huh. As long as they find Oin, the explorer I put up in my character section, then the Namilee may have a chance at getting negotiations.
<Snipped quote by Mardox>

The Namilee have two basic methods of dealing with aliens:

1. Make friendly with them. Try to establish transmissions; try to learn about them and figure out what their situation is; try to be peaceful.

2. Avoid them. Aliens can be dangerous.

Obviously, the X'Cor are the 1st solution.

Well, all I can do for a map is a bunch of colorful blobs on Microsoft Paint, so I guess I'm asking if anyone can do literally anything better looking than that

I CAN PUT COLORFUL BLOBS... ON STARS!
<Snipped quote by Lauder>

You'll still be overwhelmed by anyone with a large enough population, however- the New Republic, the Xim (350 billion population, by the way), and so on. So don't get in over your head
