I’m intersected in joining, but @Shadrack Nor’s event currently appears to be in a massive battle at the moment. I would like to introduce my character out of combat, so should I wait a bit or join somewhere else?

Personally, I don't think you cheated, per se. I think it was unsporting to rely on something that Dawn couldn't, and I can see why she would consider it cheating. But in a situation like this, I don't really think that my opinion matters. What matters is what the two of you think.
