8th Republican Sovereignty Army
Siege of Kiefeng - Third Week

The sounds of gunfire still echoed in the night air. The sky was bright with orange flashes from distance explosions. The smell of cordite filled General Chang Tian's nostrils as he strolled behind the lines at the edge of Kaifeng's western district.

"These night sorties have been effective enough lately." Colonel Xieufeng said. "Fewer plane losses this week than last, at the very least." The colonel said, pacing alongside his boss.

"For us, our dear allies have been having some trouble however." Brigadier General Tian said, stepping over the corpse of a fallen Royalist. "Half of Kaifeng is ours, mostly in tact as well. If we stay the course we can seize the rest as well." He said, no doubt thinking of the latest staff general staff meeting. The Pilots of the 27th had advised General Hao Lin to allow for indiscriminate bombing in the city center. Along with that worthless maniac Ma Auriot. Fortunately for the citizens of Kaifeng, and for the cities industry Lieutenant General Hao had turned them down in no uncertain terms.

"The Black pigs can't sustain these kinds of losses for long, sir." The Colonel said of the royalists, almost ignoring his commanding officer's comment. The Colonel had finished the estimates only a few hours before and delivered them personally. The 8th Army had suffered light casualties in all of it's engaged units. Zhan Tou's 17th Division took the brunt of the losses being at the front of the attack, and suffered nearly three-hundred men killed, wounded or captured. Included five Medium-Tank's from the 12th's Armoured's medium tank Battalion. But for every one Republican killed, a score of Royalists fell.

"Hm." Chang grunted. Preoccupied with the knowledge that the fallen royalists which scatter the rear of the now Republican lines, and the horde of captured defenders come from the untrained, and levied portions of the Royalist force. "The foreign dogs, and the real Royalist Army still lay ahead of us." The colonel nodded, true enough it was that the Royalists would let their poor, untrained, and ill-equipped citizens be the first line of defense against the two Republican Armies.

"Soon we'll find ourselves pushing into the city center, the Royalists will either toughen up or break then. I don't know about you colonel.." He paused as he jumped a top one of Mo Tao's tanks, and extended his hand down to the colonel who joined him. "But I don't expect they will break that easily." The head of a tanker popped out of the turret, no doubt wondering what idiot would disturb his few hours of sleep at this hour. He groggily noted that the two men far outranked him and begrudgingly popped back into his tank without being able to chastise the men who woke him.

"The only easy day was yesterday." The Colonel added conclusively. A prophetic statement if ever there was one.

A few days earlier, near Kaifeng:

"General Zhou, news from Zang-Quin!" Shouted the orderly over the sound of the tank's roaring engines. Earlier this week Zhou had mobilized the 8th Armoured Division which had since been rushing to participate in the siege of Kaifeng. "You're going to want to read it, sir!"

"Hand it over, Soldier!" He grabbed the sheet of paper from the orderly and quickly read the newsprint words:

Zang-Quin Offensive!

Zhou Jin’s eye brows raised slightly, the news of the attack in the capital struck him as a surprise. Though, not an entirely welcome one. Zhou wished more than anyone for the foreign invaders to be removed from Zengravi soil, but the time was not right. His facial features twisted in a scowl as he finished reading the article.

“Rebellion in Zang-Quin.” He said finally, handing the paper over to another senior officer. “Some unknown elements seek to oust the Commonwealth forces from our fallen cities.” He sighed, brusquely. A goal that he surely could get behind, but the methods employed were less than savoury. “The Commonwealth will surely not like this new development.” He added. As much as he despised the Commonwealth invaders, and wanted nothing more than to see their corpses heaved into the sea after they seized the capital, he knew that until the Republic had defeated the Royalists, and established a firm hold of Zengrav, they stood no chance at removing the invader from their soil.

“General, will the Commonwealth retaliate?” A young officer on the Generals staff spoke over the engines of the idling tank.

“Of course, they will, they have to or they will appear weak. If not to show the attackers that they are the power here, they must show our neighbours as well. I expect that we shall receive news of their retaliatory efforts in the coming days.” The general shrugged as he said it. People would die, but it was not his attack that brought about their deaths. All who would read the news would know that the Commonwealth could not simply accept an attack that left their soldiers dead on foreign soil. All they simply needed to ask themselves is “Would Zengrav allow such an attack to go unpunished?” He shook his head at his own thought, “Of course not.” He whispered, though no one heard him.

He waved his hand forward in a gesture to advance, and gave the order over the Company radio for the division to continue its advance to Kaifeng. The dust clouds of the armoured vehicles, and their Armoured Infantry cohorts stretched for miles. They would link up with the rest of the 8th Army within the week, and set to finishing the siege of Kaifeng. He pushed away a pang of worry over what the Commonwealth’s next course of action may be, as for the time being Zhou and his men had more pressing concerns.

Siege of Kiefeng - Second Week

One Week Earlier:

"General, things are proceeding smoothly. Our troops have extended the siege lines to the west, and the Tao-The Younger, will be here within a week." Lieutenant General Hao Lin smiled as he spoke into the receiver. He actually enjoyed speaking to his commanding officer, even if through daily reports to Headquarters.

"Very well, Hao, I expect Kaifeng will fall within the next few weeks, yes?" General Zhou's voice came through the receiver deeper, and slightly crackly.

"Yes sir, we are on schedule. Truth be told, the Zengravi Democratic Front seems to be capable." He paused for a moment, "Apart from that unreliable, opportunistic, ruthless thug Ma Auriot. His men are hardly more than a rabble." He finished, making his displeasure at working with the freelance warlord of the 10th Volunteer Division known to his commander.

"Of course. I do not envy you friend, though I trust you will do your duty." The General said, and any further discussion of the matter was ended right there. Such a statement from the General was as much an order as an off-handed remark. Lieutenant General Hao Lin would do his duty, his men would do theirs, and if there is anything holy in the world Ma Auriot and his 'division' would do theirs.

"Of course, sir." Hao replied simply. "As for the upcoming days, men and supplies are expected to arrive, along with the 12th's tanks. We will put them to good use, you can rest assured of that sir. Was there anything else that needed to be discussed?" The Lieutenant General inquired professionally.

"Nothing major. I will allow you to return to your preparations. Contact me once the city has fallen, I will wish to make an inspection before we continue on the campaign. Carry on General" Zhou Jin said, hanging up the phone without a reply. Lin was not offended, this was simply how the General was, and as his second in command he could expect nothing other than for the general to be himself.

He did the same and replaced the receiver back into it's handle on the radio. Then he did as he had done all morning. He set about studying the maps of Kaifeng, and reading reports from regimental, and brigade commanders.

Earlier this week:

Bang, Bang, Bang.

Nearby pistol shots echoed through the regimental headquarters of the 4th Infantry Regiment, of the 24th Infantry Brigade. Troopers ran from cover to cover, firing off rifles, submachine guns, and shoulder mounted rocket launchers at their attackers.

"We've got Mechs attacking regimental HQ too, Major! But we're not giving an inch, and I expect you to hold your position too!" Colonel Yuan Xieufeng shouted into his radio receiver. The sounds of shoulder mounted rocket launches being fired could be heard nearby. More of the Duke-Mother's guards were assaulting his men nearby.

"Relax, Colonel, it is good for the men to be blooded before the assault." Brigadier General Chang Tian said, sauntering toward the Regimental commander. His standard issue pistol in hand. "Casualty report?" He asked casually, placing the pistol on the wooden table between the two officers.

"Yes sir, we've taken a couple dozen dead, hundred or so wounded. The real pain comes in the form of our lost vehicles. Replaceable losses, so far sir." The colonel replied, steadying himself under the eyes of his youthful commander. Brigadier General Tian was no more than 23 years old, and had already risen to prominence in the 8th RSA due to his courageous, calm, and bold actions under fire. The Colonel was nearly twice as old, but held the young man in high regard none-the-less.

"Very well, your men have things mostly under control here. I'd say we've hit them nearly as hard as they've hit us. Get word out to your company officers to reform the lines, and double watches from now on after sundown. The 17th is in position and with the support of the 27th Bomber Wing they managed to push the defenders off the outer-walls. I expect we shall do the same in the coming days once our lines are firmly established." He paused, thinking of the moments before the attack began. The roar of the mechs, the sound of rockets, and machine guns. It had all occurred at once.

"Sir?" The Colonel interrupted, noticing the thoughtful, almost detached look on his commanding officer's face. "Are you unwell?" He asked.

"No, no of course not. I was just thinking of earlier. The Duke-Mother's guards attacked using mechs." He paused for a moment as the Colonel took in the information before nodding. "But we didn't hear them." The General finished, and immediately the gears turned in the Colonel's head.

"They didn't advance out from the city!" The Colonel all but shouted, "That many mechs, we'd have heard them miles out! Well where did they come from, then?" He asked, not expecting a sure answer, as there is no way the General would be able to know that.

"No idea, but you're going to find out. Send your scouts forward to search for how they sallied that many mechs and men out of the city without going through their walls. Report to me when you find out, understood?" The general said matter-of-factly. He was all business now.

"Yes sir!" The Colonel said, giving the general a sharp salute.

The General returned his pistol to it's holster. Tian returned the salute before departing to inspect his own headquarters.

### Two Weeks ago, aboard the FNS Voorbode, off the coast of the Naarden Peninsula "The Guard Regiments are in place, sir. We are prepared to make the landing." Spoke Commodore William Wright on the Bridge, addressing the senior officer of the joint Dereham Republic/NFRU Task Force, Admiral Daan Jaansen. The Admiral was chosen by the Joint Senior Military Command of the Dereham Republic Armed Forces, and the Federal Military Command of the NFRU to lead Task Force Liberty on it's training mission. He was a man of just over sixty years. He was a figure of pure authority aboard his vessel, his uniform, a solid grey coat, bore many medals decorating his left breast. "Give the order, Heer Wright. If the Sappers are not prepared than they are to be replaced immediately. Begin the operation." replied the decorated naval officer, as he fingered down a hair of his greying mustache. "Aye aye, Admiral." replied Commodore Wright picking up the inter-fleet telephone. "All units, this is the Voorbode, Operation Tidal Wave is a go." After giving the order, the Commodore lifted a notepad from a nearby console and scribbled "0302 Tidal Wave launched," before placing it back down at the console. The Admiral and Commodore walked together to the view port of the Voorbode's Bridge as they watched the Amphibious Landing Vehicles make way for land. The first wave of the training operation consisted of the 1st Guard Regiment, and the 1st Battalion of The Sapper Regiment. The plan for the assault was simple, first wave under the command of Colonel Edward Loren of the Dereham Republic Army. It's objective was to secure a beach-head and hold until the second wave arrived carrying the 2nd Guard Regiment, and the remaining two sapper battalions from The Sapper Regiment. From there, Colonel Loren would leave a single Guard Company to keep the beach-head open, and secure for the third and final wave. With the rest of his force, he would move inland 10 miles in-land eradicating any enemy resistance. The third wave of the assault would bring Light Armored Transport vehicles for the landing forces, as well as any extra necessary equipment. If any stiff resistance was encountered the joint Dereham Republic-NFRU naval task force was to remain on station to provide support. The task force consisted of twelve ships, and submarines. Three Emancipator Class Cruiser, two Type-48 "Draak" Onderzeeboot, three Type-42 "Dagvlieg" Onderzeeboot, two Amner Hall Class Transport ships, and one Revolution Class Aircraft Carrier and the Flagship, a refitted battle-cruiser of Naarden design. The task force was the first incarnation of an amphibious strike group, an idea that came from a mid-level officer in the Dereham Republic Navy. ### Three hours later, Nine and a half miles north of the tip of the Naarden Peninsula "Voorbode, this is Ground Element Headquarters, do you read?" Colonel Loren's radioman spoke into his telephone. It was not long before a reply in the affirmative came from a radio operator aboard the Voorbode. "Voorbode, standby for HQ." The young man spoke as he adjusted his helmet and handed the telephone to Loren. "Voorbode, this is HQ, Time: 0638 Local, all objectives completed. Standing by for further orders." Loren spoke the words calmly, and carefully, while surveying the defensive perimeter he and his men established. Confident that no imaginary enemy would be able to penetrate the position whilst he awaited instructions from the Voorbode. "Ground Headquarters, Voorbode." A new voice spoke into the radio, that of Admiral Daan Jaansen "All units are to egress South to primary ex-filtration point, and rendezvous with the Fleet. Voorbode Out." With everything proceeding exactly according to plan, Colonel Loren waved his hand, and in a moment's notice Officers and Non-commissioned officers began shouting orders. He returned the telephone to the radio operator, who repeated the orders to the other units of the Ground Combat Element. It was back to the Task Force, and then back home. ### Present Day, Joint Special Tactics Training School, Joint Senior Military Command meeting with the Federal Military Command Admiral Daan Jaansen and Commodore William Wright enter a large boardroom, in the center sits a large table seating all bar three members of the Senior Command of the Dereham Republic and all members of the Federal Military Command. After the final reports for Operation Tidal Wave were finished, and sent up their respective chain of commands, the presence of the two highest ranking officers involved was requested to make a personal report to the high command themselves. "Good morning, Admiral. Commodore." spoke an gentleman of 60 years seated at the end of the table. Both the Admiral and Commodore knew that this was Supreme General Morrison of the Dereham Republic Army, however he introduced himself all the same. "I am General Colin Morrison, Commander of the Dereham Republic Army. Please seat yourselves." Both of the men quietly seated themselves adjacent to the General at the far side of the table. "Reports indicate that Operation Tidal Wave was a success, and that together our capabilities to establish, maintain, and exploit an amphibious assault are otherwise far beyond what we had originally thought. This meeting has been sanctioned as I have a single question for you gentlemen." The two naval officers exchanged a glance from across the table before the General continued, "Is it practicable to do in a war zone?" The Commodore and Admiral both exchanged a final glance before answering, "Yes, sir."
The Nation Sheet
Nation's Name Federal Republic of Dereham, more commonly referred to as The Dereham Republic, or Republic of Dereham.
Nation's History The Kingdom of Dereham - The Kingdom of Dereham established over five centuries ago was consisted of four independent kingdoms consolidated into a single kingdom, ruled by a single throne. The Kingdom of Dereham, The Kingdom of Klei, The Kingdom of Wael, and the Kingdom of Eire. The inclusion of these independent kingdoms came both by way of conquest, and by way of political maneuvering. Once established, the cultures of each kingdom, Aenglanders from Dereham, Kleimorans from Klei, Eirefolk from Eire, and Waelish from Wael, all became accepting of one another. For many years the Kingdom of Dereham traded with their many trade partners. The Kingdom of Dereham, however, did not remain entirely peaceful during this time, and was more than willing to go to war to protect it's interests. The Superiority War took place between the Kingdom of Dereham and the, now dissolved, Kingdom of Fervonia. This trade war resulted in the destruction of the Fervonian navy while it was moored at port in the nation's capital at the hands of Grand Admiral Sir Arthur Rooke. Centuries, and many kings later, the son of the beloved King William IV, John, ascended to the throne as King John I of Dereham. King John I, unlike his father, held traditional beliefs about society. He believed that all citizens in the nation lived only to serve the Kingdom. During his reign he showed little regard for the average citizen. The king created and enacted many policies that he believed would strengthen the kingdom, he did so with no regard for those who lived within his domain. Among these policies were the "Military Fortitude and Expansion" which drafted all able bodied males, not currently serving in the armed forces, ages 14 through 30 into the military, forcing them to leave their work, families, and lives. The Great Revolution - Following months of the King blatantly exploiting his citizens by raising taxes to pay for extravagant galas, drafting all able bodied men to bolster his military, taking large portions of the agricultural production for the nobility, allowing military units to billet in civilian houses at the cost of the home owner. Petitions and strikes to bring change to the Kingdom fell upon deaf ears, and dissent spread to all corners of the kingdom. The Great Revolution was sparked when a low ranking nobleman killed his wife. The nobleman was not brought exonerated of guilt by the King himself. The brother of the deceased woman, Jefferson Taylor, was distraught with the king's decision. Knowing that the government would not deliver justice, he took it into his own hands killing the nobleman. This act of defiance directly against the king inspired many people, including most of the garrison of the capital city of Amner to rise up and riot. Before long word of this spread to the far corners of the Kingdom, and the small riot had sparked into a full rebellion. The king began sending in units of the Dereham Army still loyal to him to kill the rebels. Among his loyal units remained the elite Royal Guard, the palace guards of Amner Hall. Their commander, Major Robert Glenshaw, was personally ordered by the king to enter the city and cleanse the streets of rebels. The Major planned the operation, however, rather than launching it, he deserted with the senior staff of the Royal Guard. With new military leaders arriving to the aid of the rebellion, it became much more organized. Major Glenshaw was chosen to lead the new military of the rebellion. With no shortage of volunteers, the military became a strong fighting force with units deserting from the Royalist military and bringing their equipment with them. Before long a military adviser from the Norther Federal Republic of Unions, and a representative of the Revolutionary Syndicalist International arrived. The adviser made regular reports to the NFRU's military high command, eventually securing large shipments of small arms, tanks, artillery, and aircraft for the newly named Republican Army. With the support of Syndintern, the revolution succeeded after just shy of a decade of fighting, with the royalist forces surrendering the fortress of Amner Hall. The revolution ended with a total of 4,326,000 dead, wounded, or missing on both sides, among the dead were the King of Dereham. The citizens of Dereham had no qualms with his children, or his Queen, and they were allowed to be released on the condition they leave the Republic's sovereign territory, and never return. Following the revolution, a new government was established and the Federal Republic of Dereham was formed.
Race Human.
Religion Free Universalism- This is the primary religion of the Federal Republic of Dereham with nearly 70% of the population adhering to it's beliefs that sentient beings are capable of free and responsible thought and research in their journey to find truth and spiritual growth, without the assistance of a church or other religious organization. Quddak - This is a minority religion in the Federal Republic of Dereham with less than 13% of the population following it's belief structure. It is characterized by the belief that the Prophet (PBUH) was the messenger of Al Quddus, and Al Quddus is the one and only God, also known as the Shahada, or the first pillar of faith. Alongside that teaching, Islam also believes in the four other pillars of faith, which include obligatory prayer, compulsory giving to the poor in the community, fasting in the month of Ramadan and the pilgrimage to Yathrib. The additional 17% belong to various animist religions, or are agnostic.
Form of Government The Federal Republic of Dereham is a Republic, with candidates elected from many separate political parties varying in size and objective. The Supreme Chancellor is an elected position, directly by the people. A Candidate is able to serve as the Supreme Chancellor for 10 year terms. A Candidate may run as many times as he likes, but may only be elected for 2 terms. Each party selects a candidate to run for this position. The de jure second on the line of succession is the Secretary of the People. He is chosen by the Supreme Chancellor and approved by the Council of Workers. This position is held a minimum of 1 full term. If the Supreme Chancellor is reelected he may nominate a new Secretary of the People. The holder of this position serves as the head of the military, but does not hold direct command of any forces in the field. The de jure third on the line of succession is the Chief Councilman. He is chosen from among the council of workers, by the other councilmen. He must secure a majority vote every 5 years to remain Chief Councilman. If he is not reelected to the council by the people, a new Chief Councilman is elected from the council. With a population of 135 million people, the government divided the country into 135 electoral districts, One district per 1,000,000 citizens. Each party may run a single candidate in each electoral district.
Current Leader(s) Supreme Chancellor Robert A. Glenshaw - Robert Alexander Glenshaw, a former officer in the Royal Army, loyally served King William IV as Royal Guardsman, eventually rising through the ranks of the guard to serve as it's commander, holding the rank of Major. After King John I ascended to the throne, as his policies became exceedingly unpopular, riots began to begin. The King ordered Major Glenshaw to suppress the rioters, arrest, and execute their leaders. Upon arriving at the home of Jefferson Taylor, the leader of the riot in Amner, the Major rather than arresting him, offered his services. Glenshaw began quickly turning the separate and unorganized riots into a full organized revolution. He made his departure from Amner following mass executions carried about by those loyal to the king. He established a new headquarters in the South, at the city of Caroal. He quickly reached out and organized the isolated riots, into an organized rebellion. His knowledge of the inner-workings of the Royal Army proved to be instrumental in the establishing of a Republican Army, and even more so in combating loyalist forces on the field. Secretary of the People Matthew W. Carver - Matthew William Carver, originally a young factory worker from Northern Dereham, Carver was pressed into military service as a result of King John's draft policies, assigned to the King's Royal Guard due to his high training scores, he served Major Glenshaw loyally. His father, one of the first rioters from his city, was arrested and executed by the Loyalist forces. This drew him further and further away from the loyalist, as her urged Major Glenshaw to do something. When the riots arrived in the capital city and the order came to execute the rioters, Major Glenshaw and Serjeant Carver declined the orders, and defected. Carver, as he was a poor factory worker, had a deep understanding of the people and their troubles. He quickly proved to all that he was willing to do what was necessary to win a better situation for the citizens of Dereham. His friendship with Glenshaw, and his deep love for the people of Dereham, made him an obvious choice for Secretary of the People. Chief Councilman Jefferson G. Taylor - Jefferson Garth Taylor, by most accounts the first real leader to step up during the riots at Amner. He was born to a relatively affluent family living in the capital city of Amner. His father worked as a solicitor for a large and prestigious firm, whilst his mother stayed at home to raise him and his sister. Following in his father's footsteps Jefferson studied law at one of the most elite universities in Dereham, and graduated among the top of his class. His sister was married to a landholder, a lower ranking member of the Dereham Nobility, and a staunch traditionalist who believed that wives were the property of their husbands. His sister was subject to beatings from her husband when he had been drinking, and with the laws that prevented her from defending herself, she was left little choice but to suffer through them without seeking help. It was not long until the beatings lead to her death. Distraught over the murder of his beloved sister, Jefferson tracked, and killed her former husband. However, knowing that this could happen elsewhere in the country, and in the world was too much for him, he vowed to bring a change to Dereham. It was not long before he had many followers in Amner who rioted over the violent treatment of women, and the poor not only in their city, but all over their country.
