Kanbaru Otoko

Kanbaru had found that, even in the short time she had them, she liked her abilities. One was broad with nigh infinite potential, and the other was clear cut in its utility. They came to her as easy as one would curl their fingers, but just as any limb, they had certain limitations. Limitations like being unable to redirect herse mid-dash when the Mysterious Figure she had moved to engage exploded, a wave of force and water striking her like the back hand of an angry god to send her pinwheeling back from whence she came.

Her back settled amidst mud and grass, the later tickling her neck as she glimpsed the sky above while her ears rang incessantly from the force of impact. Alive, she certainly was. Stunned, even more so.

Yet even such she could still react with spine chilling terror as a black hole opened above them, swallowing her view of the starry sky with an inky oblivion that went beyond description. It pulled, and her body responded, fist-fulls of mud falling fruitlessly through her clenched hands as she was unable to anchor herself. With nothing to affix herself to she was yanked into the event horizon swift as could be.

The other side of a black hole turned out to be a tavern. Kanbaru's first thought upon realizing there was hardwood beneath her boots was that physists would be hanging themselves by their neck ties if they saw this. Then again, they'd probably be doing that just from all the magic breaking the laws of matter on a constant basis, but that was just getting off topic.

"Well...that was a thing. Still deciding if we picked the right door or not, but if this isn't the afterlife I can't complain." The bluenette sighed, resting her arms on the bar while she stretched her back out like a feline, a contented gasp parting her lips as a kink worked itself out with a pop of vertebra. Meanwhile her gaze turned to Umi, who seemed to have gotten a card somehow and was attempting to use it as Kanbaru had earlier.

Only, this card didn't open a door. It brought out a very familiar face. One that would be swallowed up in buxom as Kanbaru flung herself at a diminutive girl with wild green hair and a near constant aura of murderous intent that rebounded off Kanbaru without effect. "Touka! Oh I'm so happy to see you, jesus it's been ages and we've got this whole Tower adventure thing that would be so much smoother if we had the club together. Oh, you smell of strawberries. Must be a new shampoo, I like it. Maybe I'll borrow it sometime-"

She rambled on rather excessively, Umi's Serei being assaulted verbally and physically as Kanbaru lifted Touka upwards to rub her cheek to the girl's like an affectionate feline would a kitten.

What she'd taken for teleportation or some form of extreme speed was in reality a doppleganger as solid and menacing as the original. Intangibility along with copies? Now that was just unfair, but this Tower never did promise them an easy road forward...well, aside from their Benefactor, but Kanbaru was as liable to trust him as she was to join shield boys harem.

A prospect made only slightly less laughable as he came through the closing door to plant his shield between the other ranged girls and a freaking meteor falling from the starry sky. Glancing over her shoulder as she willed her water to swell upwards violently, she was impressed to see Tokuda endure the falling ball of rock and fire without so much as a step taken backwards. Kanbaru thought it only fair to spare him the latter half of the attack and willed her geyser to rise before him, splashing his shield and smothering the flames that could find little purchase on land turning to mud and marsh around them.

"Hey guys, has anyone noticed if their entire bodies are intangible or only certain parts? Cause if its the former then I think we can take them so long as we take a few hits ourselves. Just need to live...recklessly." The bluenette questioned aloud, uncaring if the speechless figures reacted to her words. Her attention turned fully to the one acting like a surrogate mage as they brought another card up to bombard them once more.

Tokuda could probably take those hits for them, but all the figure needed to do was target the more distant fighters and problems would mount like cord wood. The swampy plain bubbled beneath the caster's feat before rising in a plume of boiling water, both man and card vanishing in the plume. Holding every doubt that such an attack would actually hurt him but hoping the seperation between man and floating card would ensure the meteor was averted, she Quick Dashed towards him as the water fell and laid into the dopple caster with a wild flurry of bludgeoning blows. If for nothing else then to lock down one more enemy while the others fought on.

The land beyond the door was simple, almost serene if she wasn't bracing herself for confrontation. The grass crunched beneath her boots, the level expense stretching onwards beneath a gloriously starry sky. If there wasn't a spot of darkness deeper then the expense up above she'd have had reason to take her eyes off the hooded figure walking towards her with an alarming surety of step. Then without so much as a flicker of movement, the distance evaporated and body screamed in pain.

Being under the Mysterious Figure's full attention for but a few seconds was like going through a blender, but there was shockingly little blood or injury. The bluenette's key rose to block, the tool weighty enough to take the card blades but unable to match the ambidestrous assault fully. Her teeth gnashed hard as what few cuts where physical piled up, the clang of struck metal rattling in her ear as she was pinned on the defensive right from the start.

It was a relief to find that once more, she fought with allies at her side. Umi dashed in, throwing dirt and trying to grapple while even the shifty girl Akiko tried to draw attention to herself. Rose's actions had Kanbaru interposing her weapon between herself and the airborne dagger on reflex, but rather then deflecting a poorly timed bout of treachery it exploded into...flower petals. A rush of vitality hit her, the cuts along her arm and chest closing up as the roses scattered and faded away completely.

"T-Thanks." Kanbaru shouted back, whincing as the petals seemed to do nothing to dim the phantom pain of the less material card strikes and it showed in the lapse in her voice. Rather then dogpiling on the man she used her Quick Dash to launch herself to Rose's side, exposing her back to the figure while she slammed her key down into the grass and concentrated. The soil dampened and churned under the force of water surging down and out, worsening footing while she expanded her reach for a geyser of boiler water.

"Get ready, this guy is going to break off and hit whoever's easiest. Don't expect to keep him pinned for long."

A part of her expected the arrayed people to clamor for the door to what appeared to be Miso City at a glance and that she'd have to split off to explore the Door to Night on her own, but it seemed that the others shared more then just powers in common. Plastering on a cheery smile once the majority of the waking people made their desires known twirled her wand before settling it towards the Door to Night.

"Alright then, it sounds like we have a party ready to explore, so let's get a move on and see what creepy crawlies this tower has waiting for us!" The bluenette said, marching ahead to be the first through the breach and welcome the mysteries of the Tower. Better to set aside the peculiarity of the Benefactor's speech till later, and not question how a duplicate of someone could be here if the original was still missing from reality...assuming, the world they knew was real and the Tower was the oddity. One could question if the inverse was true, but that way led to madness. And circular logic puzzles.

Kanbaru would much rather confront an issue she could smack witha key and drown in boiling water, thank you very much!

"Oh hey, is that a mysterious benefactor granting us amazing powers for unknown reasons~? I think it is!" A twinkle of girlish glee beamed from Kanbaru's eyes with an intensity to match a certain geriatric British wizard with a penchant keeping secrets till later books. There was even an overwhelming level of snark and sarcasm wafting from his cloaked visage, his ambivalence breath taking to behold as her went through them one by one. The feeling was downright nostalgic and she couldn't contain a dopey smile as she saw right through to her heart.

"That's Sea Salt-Chan to you, and don't you forget it" Kanbaru said with a wink to the retreating figure. Her hand then shot out on reflex and caught the card which bore no visage, a blank slate that eyed curiously until Umi spoke up from beside her. The girl was rather straight forward and Kanbaru saw no issue with her, finding her rendition of dream curious. It confirmed that it was rather individually tailored as a dive into one's own heart should be.

Umi had ran off in a hurry to try and catch their benefactor with curious questions about a missing person. Her excitement gave way to a cold gleam for only a moment before she pushed out the cheer once more. A girl who went disappearing a month ago. There certainly wasn't a Tower that she had scene...but that could mean it had been there all along, picking people up for who knew how long? This place was a mystery to say the least, but the prospect of it got her heart pumping with a desire to let loose just as she watched Rose and Akilo demonstrate their own skills.

"Nice knives, Rose. It looks like I'm the resident Water Mage here. I even have a really big wand to show for it!" The bluenette said, twirling the overly large key before pressing it to the ground and setting her elbow upon the hilt, propping herself up with the weapon. In the other hand she turned the blank card over, making a show of looking it over before sweeping her gaze across the relative strangers around her. "What say we use this card to find ourselves some monsters to fight? Ooh, or go straight to a treasure room!"
"You're a remarkably selfish person."

The words struck her as funny, and she made no secret of her amusement. The shapeless mass of darkness stood in stark contrast to the glass tablou she stood upon. Just looking down at her feet made her want to snort at the monument to vanity her dream had conjured. Or was a monument to introspection? Kanbaru didn't know, and it didn't matter whose visage they stood on.

"You say you're ready to move on, but your heart...your heart aches for it. Such self delusion could only be called selfish."

"Hmm, perhaps your right." The bluenette conceded with a nod, an undercurrent of energy tingling from her curled toes to her crown of her head as she stepped closer to the mass of concentrated malice. Her doubts made manifest, the lingering will of a Dark Mahou Shoujo who feasted on negativity for many happy monthes. If she squinted she'd see the coat billowing in a breeze that wasn't there and a mask pushing out puffs of chilled breath that never was. "Or maybe, I know my heart all to well."

Her hand thrust forward, uncaring of the feeling of wrongness creeping along her skin as it breeched the darkness.

"This changes nothing!"

The darkness seethed, roiling with anger and creeping along her arm to swallow her in its bitterness. Only for Kanbaru's hand to clench upon a solid shaft, and with it came a blinding light. Without sight she wrenched her arm back, the darkness evaporating into the air as a peculiar rod was held before her. A peculiar...wand.

"No, I guess it doesn't."

Kanbaru awoke from a nostalgic dream, and found herself upright before a monolithic hall. Her body shifted and she realized she was garbed in elaborate fabrics and armor, her hand curled fiercely around the handle of the biggest key she'd ever seen, yet instinctively she knew what it was and what it could do.

Or rather, what she could do. This was her Heart made manifest, after all. Finding a warmth suffusing her chest as magic was once more a part of her life, she lifted her gaze to those around her and let her disappointment show. They weren't her friends. Heck, they weren't even her enemies from before. They were one and all, strangers in a strange land.

"Nice to see we're all friendly here. Howdy there, Umi." The bluenette waved to the shy girl who introduced herself, strolling over towards the others as she got a feel for the new clothes. They were far less billowy and menacing then what she was used to, but the lack of drag was at least good for not getting snagged in a scuffle. "I'm Kanbaru. I take it everyone else had an interesting dream too? Don't suppose you know any cats with televisions for heads in them, did y'all?"

Agatha Smith | Herakles| F | 14 | Unaligned

Personal Dossier

Physical Description
Standing at 5’6”, Agatha has sharp features and a smile that could cut an NC to ribbons. Hair once flaxen has long since gone gray, which is pulled into a loose bun. Deep set green eyes and a pointed nose. Some people have told her she has the face of a 1st grade Math teacher who takes joy in assigning homework over the weekend. While not a weightlifter, she has a solid frame from years of hard work on the surface. Tends to wear a faded burgundy vest over an oil stained grey jumpsuit.

Personal History
Born and raised on the surface, Agatha always knew she was a special snowflake. At the bizarrely typical age of 14, she was found compatible to pilot an NC. Like so many before her she was drawn into piloting a bipedal weapon of mass destruction and had many mercantile adventures as an independent NC operator that aren’t worth recollection. The kinds of adventures that blur together but can often be summed up as, ‘Go to exotic locations, meet interesting people, and kill them’.

Throughout her ventures she had a loyal mechanic who would have followed her to hell and back by the name of Albert Smith. He wasn’t particularly handsome or clever, but he was loyal, sweet, and won over her affections through his perseverance. At 27 Agatha was married, by 28 she had a daughter and another on the way. Finding their means of employment too dangerous to foster a family, they decided it was prudent for Agatha to set aside the adventuring for a more sedentary lifestyle. Investing their considerable saving towards setting up shop in a scrapyard, Agatha began a new life as a mother and family woman.

For years, that was good enough. All the effort she had put forth piloting her NC was directed towards running the scrapyard and raising her kids. There wasn’t the same rush that came with piloting a multi-ton automaton, but she was satisfied for a time.

Then the children grew up, and left the nest to find out their own destinies. To be the special snowflakes that have fantastical opportunities all lined up for the taking if they only go out and claim them. Her husband of 29 years had grown ill and passed peacefully in his sleep.

That left Agatha, with a job she didn’t care for and no one relying upon her. Most would have considered this time to retire, settle down and indulge herself before the inevitable end, but she couldn’t. Even with the best years of her life in the past, she knew she had more to give. Firing up the old NC, which had been used as a makeshift crane for the scrapyard, she went out to recapture her lost glory, but found there wasn’t any demand for someone so long out of the game. The only ones as desperate as she was where the good folks down at New Anchorage, and they just so happened to be looking for any pilot that would come their way.

Tactical Preferences and Skills
Spatial Awareness: Between years of combat and decades of navigating shifting heaps of torn metal and forgotten scrap, Agatha has an excellent sense for the environment around her and any shifts within her proximity. Her youngest child joked she had a had a sixth sense for falling debris, but Agatha insisted she was just more willing to listen to all her sense then most.

Confrontational: There's no horsing around when the call to action arises. Up front and to the point, she'll tackle a problem head on even if it's not the most tactful or polite. It caused her no ends of trouble but she'd argue it's saved her life just as often.

Strong Constitution: Retirement didn't dull Agatha's drive to stay in top shape as much as she could. Finding healthy food wasn't the easiest thing away from the cities, but she maintained a routine workout regiment and abstained from the typical vices of alcohol and tobacco. Chocolate was a rarity saved for her daughter's birthdays, and the only coffee she drank was decaf. A commitment made all the more trying by the other member's of her family having no such compunctions, but it is a trial she has endured with good cheer and will power.

NC Description
A medium sized mech balancing armor and speed, differentiated from most bipedal NCs by it's emphasis on hands-free integrated weaponry and a reliance on laser weaponry. A lack of an expansive radiator system keeps the use of its laser weapons to short instances with longer cooldowns between engagements, prompting a reliance on close quarters combat and use of auxiliary missile launchers.

Weapons and Armaments
Dual Oscillating Laser Armatures: Each of Herakles' arms features two light laser batteries, firing in a three ray burst before alternating barrels to fire from, mitigating the heat build up somewhat while keeping the fire rate low enough there can be some semblance of accuracy. Due to the NC's arms being designed around the weapon's integration, it's firing angle in no way inhibits the free articulation of Herakles' hands.

Chassis Mounted Medium Laser: A heavier laser then the arm integrated variants effective at medium range, meant to hammer targets at a safer distance. Has greater penetrating power at the expense of being wildly inaccurate while moving unless at extreme close range, as well as limited rate of fire.

Four Quintuple Missile Arrays: Fitted to the shoulders with deployable armored canopy for added protection. Payload constitutes 10 airburst flechette missiles programmed to arch upwards and detonate at a designated range above ground for maximum dispersal. The remaining 10 missiles are willy pete obscure visuals and thermals on top of their intended purpose.

Reinforced Fists: Self evident in their purpose, but sporting added armor along the finger exteriors in order to improve striking power and protection from impact. Precludes the use of any delicate small arms by NC scales, though heavier armaments are feasible.
