Current Summer is awesome! And that's a big complement coming from a guy that hates hot weather.

Seriously though. It's different for everyone. Sometimes writers get tired of writing and need a break from it. But writing -something- tends to be the best way for me to get over writer's block. :3

YES! This is a tip straight from Mr. King himself. And a multitude of writing groups.

When you have writer's block, there are two things to do.

1. Don't think about it for a while. Do something else and come back to it. Take a walk, watch some show, etc.

2. Write whatever comes to mind! Doesn't matter if it makes sense, or if there's a purpose to it! Open up a blank word program and just write small random situations! Just whatever comes to mind!

Kinda like how you try to think of a song artist's name but can't and it's on the tip of your tongue. Best way to think of it is to think of other things!

@ELGainsborough
Well in most fantasy universes, there's a much smaller population per race, and the race tends to be far more unified than our world is. So usually that means a common language.

Yeah but I mean, most works of fiction have the main cities or areas of that race. Like for instance, if the main area for elves is a forested land called Aura, it would be more sensible to call their language "Aurish".

Like, when you create races most authors create like a "homeland" for their races. Even if it was centuries ago their language would still be officially called (homeland + ish) in my mind.

I would think it would be kinda a funny little thought for a character in a novel/story where an elf is confronted with like a common man, where they are like "sorry I don't speak elvish". But of course their language would have another name and they would have thoughts about the intelligence of the "lesser" races and such.

EDIT: Just noticed the quote in your sig, Poo. Love it ***thumbs up***
@Fabricant451 Why are you here and didnt I already say there was nothing to do here, Not even spam...

I am the Master of all, and I decree that this thread shall never die!

Did you know that there are very credible biologists that have brought forth information on the large rock formations in the world attributing them to giant silicon-based trees in the ancient days?

And I ask you, what cut them down?
In the great fantasies we have languages like Elven/Elfish, Dwarven/Dwarfish, Orcish and etc... But, is this correct?

Most languages are named for the country or region they are from. English from England, Egyptian from Egypt, Spanish from Spain and so forth.

Has anyone thought about this? Or used this in their writing?
Perfect way to introduce my theory.

In Game of Thrones, the Red Woman Melisandre said that the prophecy spoke of the chosen one that would pull a flaming sword from stone. What if that one dude that keeps being resurrected in the Brotherhood Without Banners that lights his sword on fire, what if he ends up killing the Mountain and the Hound pulls the sword out of his dead brother, making him the chosen one?
@forums

I made some changes please lemme know if it's okay now :P
@MasterOh also I dunno about the spear, I can't just give people what they want Suzie was OK cause it was one person, to many Heirloom is a bad thing for me.

That's fine. I was just throwing together a sorta story thing, but had no real idea about the world this is all set in. I was trying to have a reason for him to have the training (which in medieval era's normally only higher class or nobility had formal training and education). And a reason for him to become a beggar, the families cash crop destroyed along with his family so his wealth couldn't have been reclaimed.

Can I at least have a normal spear? Or are the weapons given to use at first and we have to earn the better ones?

Just in case you think the spear I was describing was magical, it wasn't. But I'm happy with a normal longspear, because spears are my favorite medieval weapon.

And is it okay for my character's father to have been a knight? Or should I make him just a older guard or something? I can have it as that Samson's father was killed defending the city, and it left me orphaned and the house was claimed by our rival house which set me on the streets or something?
@forums You know what... that's an interesting idea 0.o

Would you like Suzette moved to the character tab?

omg I didn't even notice the character tab. Was we supposed to post them there? lol I'm such a noob to this forum *sigh*
OMG YES!!!

My ancestry actually goes back to the baltic and nordic tribes of Norway, so I'm a nerd when it comes to this stuff! Also, the show "Vikings" is awesome-sauce, so I'm interested!

NAME: Samson "Iron-Spear" of house Rosslen - a.k.a the "Gutter-Knight"

AGE: 20

HEIGHT: 5'11''

WEIGHT: 160 lbs.

BACKGROUND:

Samson was born to Sir Sam Rosslen, a noble in service to His Grace the King. After years of service in the city guard, he was given a small land and servants. As a son born in this noble house, Samson was given the proper education and martial training that was expected of a future soldier in service to the King. The Rosslen's weren't the wealthiest family, not by a long shot, but they never had to worry about having to do without.

House Rosslen's land were the plains, and supplied most of the kingdom with wheat and barley. Although they did raise livestock and horses, grain was their cash crop.

Samson excelled in his combat training, being a quick study and having a seemingly endless supply of enthusiasm. In truth, he just liked being outside and moving around. With all the schooling inside and endless hours of sitting in front of a boring old maester, he worked extra hard with his combat and horse-riding training in hopes that they would let him train outside more. And it worked. His father took noticed of his progress, devoting more time to hone and improve his son's talents in battle. Although the more boring lessons continued, they became less and less frequent as he grew older.

On his eighteenth year, the dragons came. They burnt everything, all the crops and the livestock. Samson was one of the few survivors. His house, his wealth, and everything he knew was now gone.

He became a beggar in the streets of the kingdom, as far as he knew this was only place left in the realm still standing. This was how he had gotten the nickname "the Gutter-Knight"; an inside joke between those who knew his past.

One day he heard the criers shouting the King's call-to-arms. It was then that he set out to serve the King, as his father once had, with a sense of purpose and hope for the future.

PERSONALITY/WHY YOU JOINED:

Samson was a proud and confident youth before all that he had was burned away in a plume of dragon's fire. Two years of being a homeless beggar had drastically humbled him. Just like the many codes of honor and conduct his father had taught him, the poor also had it's own code. Titles meant nothing on the cobbles, your parents meant nothing to those with nothing. Deeds were remembered among the beggars, and who you were only mattered if you were good company to be around.

Samson had evolved to become a kind and selfless person over the last two years. He shares more than he should with his fellow poor, and jumps in to defend them when attacked by those more fortunate. Having great skill in fighting, he has saved many of his friends from unfounded beatings from the city guards.

Having a new perspective on the world and people, and having lost everything, Samson always does what he feels is the right thing. Always willing to jump in and defend the weak and innocent not caring about his life. He is always optimistic and seemingly happy, knowing that everything can always be worse. If you can see past the rags he wears, you will find a good-hearted and fun person.
